  1. Windows 11 was finally announced during Microsoft's big event on June 24after months of speculation, with confirmation that the new operating system will be available from October 5. Anyone who currently uses Windows 10 will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11, providing your laptop or PC meets the strict minimum system requirements that Microsoft has put into place in the name of future security. If you're lucky enough to jump straight into Microsoft's latest OS though, there are plenty of benefits to updating from Windows 10 to 11. Showcasing the Fluent design language and more, the new upgrade can also be tried out on the Insider channels, ready to download and use on machines that meet the minimum requirements. There is also a huge redesign of the Microsoft Store, allowing Android apps from the Amazon App Store to be used, so you can download TikTok and other apps if you wish.Plenty of discoveries are still being made with the updated Insider build and from what Microsoft are confirming with other vendors and users, but we're making sure that we're updating this page with everything that's been confirmed so far. There's still some confusion as to the system requirements of what Windows 11 needs for your PC thanks to a component called TPM (Trusted Platform Module), but it looks like Microsoft isn't going to budge on its requirement that your device is equipped with a TPM 2.0 in order to run a fully supported version of the new OS. While we wait for the full release to drop on October 5, here's everything we know about the release date, the new features, and more for Windows 11.Windows 11 release date Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 is launching on October 5 as a free upgrade, with eligible devices being notified from them on. Messages in previous press shots were stating how Windows was "turning it up to 11 in October!" Intel also recently made reference to Windows 11 being the 'October 2021' update, which now only reinforces the October 5 date. There's already laptops that are going to be launching with Windows 11, with vendors such as Huawei agreeing a deal with Microsoft to launch new laptops with the latest upgrade of Windows. The company also confirmed that its PC Health Check tool will be updated closer to the launch of Windows 11, so you can see whether your own device is eligible to upgrade. There is also going to be a yearly update of the new operating system, similar to Apple's efforts with macOS. While Microsoft released a tool that allowed you to see if your desktop PC or laptop will be able to run Windows 11, it was confirmed to be buggy, giving erroneous results for machines that would have no problem in running the update. However, another tool has been released which gives you much clearer detail for how eligible for PC is.
  2. Memory leaks aren't a new thing for Windows users. Programs pop up from time to time using more RAM than they're meant to, but for those thinking of switching over to Windows 11 tomorrow there's something to bear in mind, in that you could be faced with memory leak issues caused by the OS's own File Explorer. If you aren't aware of memory leaks as a concept, they're essentially what happens when a certain process that's been running on your PC refuses to release the cache memory space it's been assigned. Sometimes the RAM doesn't free up even long after the program's window has been closed, and that horded memory can cause all sorts of problems by slowing down your machine, and in extreme instances causing it to become unresponsive. The Windows 11 File Explorer memory leak bug, which surfaced a couple of months ago thanks to the keen eyes of one Windows 11 Insider preview user, is outlined in a post by user gyrohan269 on the Windows 11 subreddit. They note that with each instance of Windows File Explorer opened, the RAM usage stacks and doesn't disperse upon exiting. The post was met with thousands of upvotes from those with a similar issue, and plenty of comments from users who were able to replicate the issue. We're currently running version 22000.194 (which we believe is the release version) on our test bench, and I was able to reliably replicate the bug several times. And, no, the RAM usage still hadn't freed up even after about half an hour of waiting. If you want to check if this is a problem for your own Windows 11 version, open Task Manager now and sort your processes by highest memory usage, then spam Win+E. You'll notice Explorer rise up the list pretty fast, and once you've closed them all keep an eye out to see if the memory frees up. Of course you can always restart the Windows File Explorer process manually to free up the cache from within the Task Manager, or prepare for trouble with one of the best RAM kits. But those who aren't aware of the problem could end up with a pretty clogged cache on upgrading to Windows 11. Users sporting minimal RAM sizes, and those who don't often restart their PCs, could be faced with major issues if the problems surrounding File Explorer's RAM usage aren't rectified.
  3. The existence of the GTA Trilogy remaster was more-or-less confirmed by the Korean ratings board last week, but the rumours have been gathering pace for a while: not least because Rockstar parent company Take-Two has been getting very heavy-handed with modders of the original games on PC. Dozens of mods have been disappearing thanks to DMCA notices this year, while a month ago GTA Underground shut down after six years of work. Certain modders, somewhat in the spirit of Grand Theft Auto, have tried to keep going: the 'reverse-engineering' projects re3 and reVC—spruced-up versions of GTA3 and GTA: Vice City respectively—were hit with the DMCA notice in February. The mods were removed from Github per the notice: however, the modding team counter-claimed with an argument about fair use. Re3 and reVC project lead 'aap' told Eurogamer: "We went the normal route: one of our team members filed a counterclaim with GitHub and after a waiting period of about 14 days the repo got reinstated." That is, Take-Two's lawyers did not respond to the counter-claim, so Github restored the project. It's perhaps worth picking the bones out of this. The modders thought they could be cute by using the mechanisms of DMCAs to reinstate their project, perhaps not realising that Take-Two were prepared to bring out the big guns. Take-Two clearly could have responded to the modders' counterclaim if it had so wished: instead it allowed the mods to reappear on Github. So yes, the modders could have perhaps been wiser. But it really feels like Take-Two saw this as an opportunity to set an example.Take-Two's lawyers have now circled back to re3 and reVC, and sent a notice to Github that it has launched an infringement lawsuit in the state of California. This lawsuit identifies several individuals involved in the mods' creation and reads in part: "Defendants are well aware that they do not possess the right to copy, adapt, or distribute derivative GTA source code, or the audiovisual elements of the Games, and that doing so constitutes copyright infringement. Defendant [aap] even stated publicly that he was "very much worried" about TakeTwo’s discovery of the re3 and reVC projects. And, when Take-Two attempted to remove Defendants’ infringing source code from the Internet, at least three Defendants (acting in at least one instance with other Defendants’ participation and direction) knowingly filed bad faith counter notifications that materially misrepresented the legality of their content, apparently claiming that because they allegedly 'reverse engineered' the Games’ source code, they somehow cannot be liable for copyright infringement." The lawsuit even goes on to cite aap's comment to Eurogamer about the goal being to create an "open source GTA."Github has, unsurprisingly, removed the mods and all their forks. If you go to their former page on Github you'll find the site's standard notice of a DMCA takedown, alongside a link to the various correspondence around the mods. Take-Two's lawsuit is serious business: it is coming after the individuals concerned for damages, assembles a bunch of material and quotes supporting its case and, most worryingly, seeks to make a great deal out of the fact that the mod creators tried to get around the initial requests for removal. This is not good: no-one wants to see modders getting sued, or the distasteful David-and-Goliath spectacle of individuals up against a corporate legal team. Unfortunately, however, Take-Two is clearly not messing around when it comes to Grand Theft Auto. By any metric it is one of the biggest and most important entertainment brands in the world, and an almost inconceivably profitable part of Take-Two's business. Whatever is happening with those remasters the publisher is staking out its position around mods, and it's not playing.

  6. Open-source database fans were given reason to celebrate this week with the release of PostgreSQL 14, an iteration of the RDBMS featuring performance improvements for heavy and distributed workloads. The seasonal autumn release was posted yesterday, and though PostgreSQL 14 may not include a set of big wow new features, more than 220 updates add up to performance improvements for high-end systems, said Umair Shahid, head of PostgreSQL at open-source technology consultancy Percona. "The sheer number of additional features is significantly larger, but no single feature carries the entire release. The release focuses on the performance of the database: not just the database internals performing better, but also the SQL queries running faster and a focus on parallelism," Shahid said. While PostgreSQL was designed as a vertically scaling database, the open-source community has been focused on trying to implement features that help with horizontal scalability, which makes it much easier to scale applications and improve database performance, he said.Foreign data wrappers – which have supported federated workloads across PostgreSQL for some time – can now perform parallel table scans allowing developers to create foreign tables in horizontally scaling or distributed databases to run queries in parallel, making performance “significantly faster,” Shahid said. Then there's the "bulk data insert" implemented for the foreign data wrapper which also improves performance on distributed workloads. "I would say that these two major features focusing on distributed workloads help with horizontal scaling," he added. There are options if you're looking for a distributed relational database though. Just a few weeks ago, The Register reported on news from Yugabyte, a distributed system inspired by Google's Spanner and compatible with PostgreSQL on the top half, for example. While there are other systems on the market distributed by design, they target specific use cases, Shahid said. PostgreSQL – with OSI-approved PostgreSQL Licence – is an ACID-compliant general-purpose database designed for a very broad range of use cases, he said.PostgreSQL 14 is also designed to improve throughput with tweaks to the management of B-tree indexes — a self-balancing tree data structure — by reducing index bloat on tables with frequently updated indexes. Bruce Momjian, veep and PostgreSQL evangelist at support firm and contributor EDB, said: "Once we split a B-tree page in the index, we can't join it again, because of the pathology of B-tree indexes, so there's some code that improves that." Improvements to parallelism and indexing were among the updates which target performance at the top end of PostgreSQL implementations, he said. "It's sort of a focus on some of the limitations we've had at the top end. I admit that has always been a challenge for us," said Momjian, who is also a core member of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group. "We've always started at the low end and worked our way up. That top end, where you would see Oracle mostly, has sort of been the one little piece that we haven't really done [which is] the big takeaway for this. "We see reports in Russia, Europe, US and Japan where people are pushing the upper limits of PostgreSQL and, fortunately, we have the developers to push up that ceiling up a little bit."
  7. Amazon Netherlands (via Dellchannel21) has revealed the pricing for three of Intel's 12th Generation Alder Lake processors. The prices include value-added tax (VAT) and could be placeholders before Intel officially announce Alder Lake. For now, we recommend you take pricing with a bit of salt. The retailer listed the Core i9-12900K, Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K for $982, $744 and $375, respectively. The standard VAT rate in the Netherlands is 21%. If we subtract it from the pricing, the Core i9-12900K, Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K could sell for $812, $615 and $310, respectively. Even without VAT, the pricing for the three Alder Lake K-series chips still look out of place. Then again, computer hardware is usually more expensive outside the U.S. market. Provantage, a veteran U.S. retailer, had put up the Core i9-12900K, Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K for $605, $422 and $289, respectively. Another U.S. store had previously listed the same processors for $705, $495 and $343, respectively. The 12th Generation chips will be an interesting launch for many reasons. Alder Lake is Intel's first hybrid processor on a desktop platform. More importantly, the processors will be the first mainstream chips to embrace the next-generation DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 interface. Intel will be holding its Intel Innovation event on October 27 to 28 so we may hear more about Alder Lake then. Hopefully, the chipmaker will finally give us a launch date.
  8. Ethereum is the blockchain behind the cryptocurrency Ether and also NFTs. It was created by a programmer named Vitalik Buterin who was inspired by realizing "what horrors centralized services can bring". And what set off that Damascene moment of insight? It was World of Warcraft's 2010 warlock nerf. "I happily played World of Warcraft during 2007-2010," Buterin writes in his bio, "but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved warlock's Siphon Life spell. I cried myself to sleep, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring. I soon decided to quit." From there, Buterin got into Bitcoin, "started writing for a blog called Bitcoin Weekly initially at a meek wage of $1.5 per hour, and soon with Mihai Alisie cofounded Bitcoin Magazine." He dropped out of university to focus on crypto, coming up with the idea for Ethereum in 2013 and therefore being responsible for NFTs, the digital certificates of authenticity that, like everything powered by crypto's proof-of-work security systems, are wildly energy-inefficient.Many of us have been affected by a strategy we rely on being deemed OP and hit by a nerf. Very few of us subsequently cry ourselves to sleep, quit the game, and then dedicate the rest of our lives to a pyramid scheme for dorks that contributes to an environmental crisis, graphics card shortages, art theft, and ends up being banned in China.

  14. Mozilla is making it easier to access your saved passwords from its browser as part of a new update rolling out soon for Firefox on Android. To commemorate this year's Cybersecurity Awareness month, the company has added several new features to Firefox for Android designed to help keep its user's passwords safe online. Users of Mozilla's browser will be able to seamlessly access any of the passwords saved in Firefox's password manager. This means that they'll be able to log into any of their online accounts using their Firefox saved passwords without even having to open a webpage. At the same time, users can also leverage biometric security, such as your face or fingerprint, to unlock the app and safely access the credentials for their online accounts.Firefox saved passwords In addition to making it easier to access your saved passwords, now when you create an account for any app on your Android smartphone, you can also create and add a new password which will be saved directly in Firefox. From here, you can use this new password on both mobile and desktop when signing into the online account associated with it. Mozilla is also bringing the ability to autofill passwords on Android and users will be able to use any password saved in Firefox to log into their online accounts. However, if you have a Firefox account, then you'll be able to sync all of your passwords across both desktop and mobile devices. Access to Firefox's password manager on Android can be further secured by using your fingerprint or face so that no one else using your smartphone can use your saved passwords to login to your online accounts. While these new password features can help protect your online accounts, you can secure your device further by signing up for Mozilla VPN and using the company's VPN service to encrypt data sent from your smartphone.
  15. Back in July, Google's parent company Alphabet was fined €4.3bn and slapped with an antitrust order by the European Union after it was accused of allegedly using strong-arming tactics meant to push out any competing search engine and monopolize market share. Google, meanwhile, claims its search engine's dominance was simply due to it being very po[CENSORED]r. Lawyers for Google appeared in court Thursday and argued to EU judges that the fine should be overturned; they also argued to strike down a 2018 antitrust order because Google's success is due to consumer preference. Customers prefer Google so much, the lawyers claim, that the most po[CENSORED]r search term on Bing is, in fact, "Google." “We have submitted evidence showing that the most common search query on Bing is by far Google,” said Alfonso Lamadrid, a lawyer for Alphabet Inc., as reported by Bloomberg. “People use Google because they choose to, not because they are forced to,” Lamadrid continued. “Google’s market share in general search is consistent with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google to rival search engines.” The basis for the antitrust order, according to lawyers for the European Commission, was that the giant tech firm acted illegally by doing the following: 1. Forcing phone and tablet manufacturers to pre-install Chome on its phones by refusing to license the Google Play Store otherwise, which is where most Android users search and download apps. 2. Making payments to mobile network providers and manufacturers to exclusively pre-install the Google Search app on their devices. 3. Prevented manufacturers from selling any smart device with alternative versions of Android that didn't go along with the scheme. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, argued against the allegations in a blog post following the July 2018 ruling, saying "Today’s decision rejects the business model that supports Android, which has created more choice for everyone, not less. We intend to appeal." One last interesting tidbit: the EU's Competition Commissioner says that between Google forcing its search browser onto phones or paying its way there, only 1% of users have downloaded a different search app on mobile devices in Europe.
  16. GeForce Now is a service that lets you stream games you own from various digital storefronts like Steam and the Epic Games Store onto different devices, assuming Nvidia has secured the rights to them. It's free, but a premium membership tier turns on features like ray tracing and longer gameplay sessions. Before this news, the only EA game available on GeForce Now was free-to-play shooter Apex Legends. While today's additions aren't exactly the newest games, this does open the door to more EA games on GFN in the future. Some more recent games like Star Wars Squadrons are notably absent, but at least Squadrons happens to be free in this month's Games With Prime. Here are this month's games added to the GeForce Now library: AWAY: The Survival Series (Steam) Lemnis Gate (Steam) The Eternal Cylinder (Epic Games Store) Hot Wheels Unleashed (Steam and Epic Games Store) INDUSTRIA (Steam and Epic Games Store) The Last Friend (Steam and Epic Games Store) Rogue Lords (Steam and Epic Games Store) Europa Universalis IV (Epic Games Store, September 30) Battlefield 1 Revolution (Steam and Origin) Dragon Age: Inquisition (Steam and Origin) Mirror's Edge Catalyst (Steam and Origin) Unravel Two (Steam and Origin) Rustler (Steam) Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist (Ubisoft Connect)With more than 10 million users, GeForce Now pulling in more support from a giant publisher like EA (even if it's a handful of games) is always a good sign. Nvidia said it's only a matter of time before more publishers join or, in some cases, rejoin the service.

  18. Nokia G300 5G is rumoured to be the next affordable smartphone from Nokia licensee HMD Global following the launch of the Nokia G50. A new leak claims to have revealed the images and key specifications of the Nokia G300 5G. The smartphone is said to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G processor. Some of the leaked details seem to match the Nokia G50 smartphone that also debuted with a Snapdragon 480 SoC. Nokia G300 5G is also said to have a triple rear camera with a 16-megapixel main camera along with a 4,470mAh battery. Nokia G300 specifications (leaked) Nokia G300's images and specifications were leaked by the website Nokiapoweruser. It claims that the Nokia smartphone will have a TFT display with a resolution of 720×1,600 pixels and a pixel density of 386 pixels per inch (ppi). The smartphone is said to run on Android 11 and feature a Snapdragon 480 5G processor, along with 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded via a microSD card to 1TB. As per the leak, the Nokia G300 will sport a triple rear camera setup with a 16-megapixel main camera, a 5-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies, the smartphone is tipped to get an 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front. The handset is said to have a 1080p video recording resolution at 30fps. The Nokia G300 is said to come with a Hearing Aid Compatible (HAC) rating of T3/M3 and offer connectivity features including GPS, Wi-Fi, 5G, LTE, and Bluetooth. Nokia G300 5G smartphone will reportedly pack a 4,470mAh lithium-ion battery. It is said to offer up to 14.4 hours of talktime and a standby time of 28 days and 11.5 hours. The smartphone is tipped to weigh 7.41 ounces (around 210 grams). Going by the leak, the Nokia G300 5G seems to share many of its specifications and design elements — including a circular rear camera module and a waterdrop-style display notch— with the Nokia G50 handset that was launched earlier this month. However, Nokia licensee HMD Global has not shared any information about the Nokia G300 5G yet.
  19. Microsoft is making every effort to dissuade you from running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, but if you don't meet the requirements for any reason, you can get the OS up and running anyway and still receive updates, despite the company's roadblocks. Some of which feel rather arbitrary, like not supporting the bulk of Intel's 7th gen Core processors, save for some Xeon chips and the Core i5 7640X, which happens to be found in Microsoft's Surface Studio 2. How...convenient. Whether your PC meets the full requirements or not, there's an easy way to check—just grab and run Microsoft's PC Health Check app. It's a simple tool that audits your PC to make sure it has enough RAM and storage, that it's running a compatible CPU, and that it meets Windows 11's security requirements. Namely, that both TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are supported and enabled. One of the reasons why your PC might fail is because TPM 2.0 is either not present or, more likely, that it hasn't been enabled in the BIOS. This was never an enforced requirement before now, and so motherboard makers by and large never bothered with enabling the feature by default in the BIOS.Supposing you fall short of Windows 11's requirements, what then? Well, the option to upgrade will never show up in Windows Update. Microsoft would prefer if you stayed on Windows 10, in that situation, but you can also go the clean install route. It comes with an ominous warning that "Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren't covered under the manufacturer warranty," but as long as you acknowledge and accept the terms, Windows 11 will begrudgingly install on your PC. The bigger caveat is that Microsoft reserves the right to withhold updates to your PC, if your system doesn't meet the requirements. Like maybe you're running a Core i7 7700K processor (not supported) instead of the Core i5 7640X (supported, go figure). Or TPM 2.0 is not enabled. Whatever the case, you're at risk of being denied security and/or feature updates. I have a hard time believing Microsoft will actually withhold security updates, because it's in everyone's best interest if all PCs are secured as best they can be, lest they be more susceptible to becoming part of a botnet. But feature updates are another story. I'm running a preview build of Windows 11 on my virtual machine, which doesn't support or emulate TPM 2.0, and the latest test build is unavailable to me. This is likely how the public release will play out. That is, unless you employ the aforementioned workaround. Over on GitHub, you can download a script (via WinFuture) that will fetch Windows 11 from Microsoft's servers, and allow you to install it while bypassing checks for compatible hardware, including TPM 2.0. It's part of the Universal MediaCreationTool wrapper. Veering off the official course and running a user uploaded script is inherently sketchy. However, this isn't some random corner of the web—it's an open source project, and it's grabbing Windows 11 from Microsoft. The bigger risk in this scenario is that even though this bypasses the initial compatibility checks, Microsoft could implement further measures in a future update, leaving you in the same situation. But that's a bridge you can cross later, if you're determined to run Windows 11 unfettered today (or next week, when it launches) on an unsupported PC.
  20. Over the past year and a half, consumers have started shopping online more than ever before and many of their searches begin on Google which is why the search giant has announced that it's adding new ways to find shopping inspiration across its products. Since inspiration can strike at any time from an image you see online to a photo saved on your smartphone or even from something in the real world that catches your eye, the company is adding new features to Google Lens that make products users see instantly shoppable. Beginning soon, iOS users will see a new button in the Google app that makes all of the images on a page searchable through Google Lens. This will make finding a product you see online in a picture, just a tap away. Google is also making it easier to shop for products from photos on your computer by bringing Lens to Chrome on your desktop. Users will soon be able to select images, video and text content on a website with Lens to quickly see search results in the same tab without having to leave the page they're currently on.Window shopping and in-store inventory Beginning today, Google is making it easier to browse for clothing, shoes and accessories on mobile right from its search results. Now when a user searches for “jean jackets”, the company's search engine will show a visual feed of jackets in various colors and styles alongside other helpful information such as local shops, style guides and videos. Users will also be able to filter their search by style, department, brand and more and when they find something they like, they can check out ratings, reviews and even compare prices to get the best deal. This new experience is powered by Google's Shopping Graph which is a comprehensive, real-time dataset of products, inventory and merchants with more than 24bn listings. As shoppers are increasingly beginning their in-person shopping experiences online, Google is also adding a new feature that allows them to find local stores that carry the products they want right from Google Search. Beginning today, when users look for products online even from a specific brand, they can select the “in stock” filter to see only the nearby stores that have them on their shelves. This feature will likely benefit small businesses as it can help them attract new local customers.
  21. Left 4 Dead is back—Back 4 Blood, that is, the upcoming co-op zombie shooter from Turtle Rock Studios that is basically Left 4 Dead 3 in all but name. It's not the most original game concept ever, but if you've been hankering for a fresh round of that kind of zombie-slaughtering adventure, it could be exactly what you're looking for. First, though, you need to know if your PC has the beef to actually run the thing. The good news is that the answer to that question is, "Probably." The minimum requirement is pretty lightweight these days, and the recommended isn't all that much beyond it. Let us look:OS: Windows 10 64-bit CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 (2.8 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 7 1800X (3.6 GHz) RAM: 12GB GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 590 Storage: 40GB SDD DirectX12 The GTX 970 in the "recommended" spec is a bit unexpected because it's a relatively old card (the 1050 Ti isn't exactly new hotness either, but it recently enjoyed a bit of a comeback thanks to the shortage of newer technology). But, as a few people pointed out in replies on Twitter, the 970 was a top-notch card when it was new and remains a pretty decent unit to this day. More to the point, it means that even mid-range gaming PCs should be able to handle Back 4 Blood with relative ease. Back 4 Blood comes out on October 12 on Steam and the Epic Games Store, although you can get in a few days earlier—October 7—if you pre-purchase. If you're eager to get off on the right foot, we can help: We've got guides explaining how the card system works, how to play the Versus mode, and a rundown of all the game's characters.
