  1. It’s over 10 years now—a decade—since Mortal Online stormed our PCs to deliver one of the best MMOs of its generation. Driven by a growing desire among players to return to the challenging days of early MMOs, when exploring beyond the borders of your starting town felt like a dangerous and intrepid adventure, Mortal Online was a hardcore alternative to its relatively tame contemporaries. Now, Mortal Online developer Star Vault is deep into developing the sequel, and is offering online adventurers the chance to be among the first to explore the stunning world of Mortal Online 2. From 6 September (today!) until 12 September, you can register for the stress test via the Steam page. Just click the link, hit that ‘Request Access’ button, and you’ll be able to jump in as soon as the servers go live. The game is also hosting a contest, but more on that later... This is the last stress test before Mortal Online 2 enters Early Access, so will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect come launch. Of course the game’s journey from there to full release will be a long one yet, so expect the game to keep on evolving. True to the spirit of the original, Mortal Online 2 will be an open-world sandbox MMORPG with a focus on exploration, lucrative loot and intense PvP. If you prefer to explore the world (and it really is a beautiful one) and forge your own story, then the good news is that Mortal Online 2 will have a much stronger PvE focus than the original. There will be dungeons to plunder, regions to explore and titans to topple. The AI system sounds great too, with creatures relying on their senses of sight and sound to detect your presence. In the stress test, you’ll get to encounter tier 2 enemies for the first time, including trolls which - strong stupid lunks that they are - will introduce you to their unique ability to pick you up and smash you around like an unloved ragdoll. Beyond that, the latest stress test has new dungeons, new magic to master, and its intriguing directional combat system has received some polish too (you’ll find no auto-attacks or tab targeting here!). If you were part of the previous stress test, then you’re in for a treat with all the improvements that have been made. That’s not all! Developer Star Vault AB is running a screenshot competition during the stress test, with the best in-game photographers having a chance to win a copy of Mortal Online 2 as well as full access to the original Mortal Online. The contest will be based around the best in-game screenshots taken by players, so get snapping, and absorb the following information. The contest runs from Monday, September 6 to Friday, September 10, and there are two ways to enter: Follow Mortal Online on Twitter and post your screenshot, tagging @MortalOnline with the hashtag #MO2Screengrab Or post your screenshot as a comment on the pinned Facebook post Wait to see if you win! After all these years, the sequel to one of the best MMORPGs of the last decade is finally upon us, and based on what we’ve seen it makes all the improvements a sequel should - modernising key systems (and those graphics!) while holding onto the hardcore spirit that made its predecessor shine. Mortal Online 2 enters early access 26 October. Head over to the Steam page and wishlist it to become part of the journey.

  4. Chia miners are getting out of the cryptocurrency storage market and either selling their old, thrashed drives at a loss or repackaging them and reselling them as new (according to VNExpress). That's worrying news for would-be buyers, because an SSD used for Chia mining can be effectively at the end of its useful life in as little as six weeks, rather than the minimum five years most warranties cover you for. The reason for this exodus is due to Chia coin's falling pricing. The cryptocurrency peaked at just over $1,600 shortly after its launch back in May, but has since tumbled to as low as $200. At the time of writing, it sits at $288, although as is common with all cryptocurrencies it remains volatile. And mostly useless, obvs. In how it works, though, Chia is unlike most cryptocurrencies. It doesn't rely on your CPU or GPU to do the hard work, but rather plots out space on your SSD or hard drive instead. Mining Chia coins isn't as power-draining as other currencies, but it does require a lot of space to work efficiently. And certainly isn't a 'green' cryptocurrency. This need for space led to a brief spike in storage pricing back in May and fears of a storage shortage, although it was reserved to larger capacities, and mostly only affected China. Drive pricing has since returned to normal. We wouldn't recommend buying a pre-owned SSD at the best of times, but if such drives are being repackaged as new, then there's no way of telling at the time of purchase. You can always look at the drive's status once it's in your machine—download the drive monitoring software from the manufacturer's website (such as Samsung Magician) to check how much data has been written to it. But by that time you may not be able to do a whole lot about it. Be careful who you buy your SSDs and hard drives from going forward, basically. Alan has been writing about PC tech since before 3D graphics cards existed, and still vividly recalls having to fight with MS-DOS just to get games to load. He fondly remembers the killer combo of a Matrox Millenium and 3dfx Voodoo, and seeing Lara Croft in 3D for the first time. He's very glad hardware has advanced as much as it has though, and is particularly happy when putting the latest M.2 NVMe SSDs, AMD processors, and laptops through their paces. He has a long-lasting Magic: The Gathering obsession but limits this to MTG Arena these days.
  5. The Witcher: Ronin is an upcoming manga that sets the famed monster hunter Geralt off in pursuit of the Lady of Snow, Yuki Onna, across a new realm inspired by feudal Japan. The grim Eastern European fantasy is a natural fit for this kind of translation: "In a world such as this, the role of a professional monster slayer is just as essential, as dangerous Yokai and Oni (Japanese spirits and demons) are constantly on the prowl," CD Projekt said. What makes a little less sense is that the studio is now raising funds to support a "hard copy collector's edition" on Kickstarter. "The main story arc of The Witcher: Ronin contains 4 chapters—around 100 full-color pages—following Geralt as he searches for clues, fights deadly monsters, and is faced with difficult moral choices," the Kickstarter campaign states. "In addition to this main story, we have also written 3 short stories of roughly 15 pages each. These standalone tales deepen the context of this mysterious Ronin world, while also featuring fan-favorite characters such as Vesemir and Yennefer—each translated into this manga’s style." "Furthermore, as well as these atmospheric narratives we have also produced a making-of section with creator commentary, early draft sketches, and insight into the mythological background that has influenced the manga itself."This particular edition of The Witcher: Ronin will only be available through Kickstarter, at a cost of €35 for the basic package—the book and a postcard—or €50 for the "Deluxe Wanderer," which includes a postcard and poster with variant cover art. (Limited-availability tiers at €150 and €1050 are already sold out.) Shipping is extra, and of course there are a few bonus add-ons up for grabs, like pins, a tote bag, and a little Geralt miniature, if you want to throw more money at it. The campaign is already hugely successful, taking just over two hours to blow past its €90,000 ($107,000) goal and is now well over triple that amount. As Kickstarter ideas go, this is clearly a good one. But I have to question why it was needed at all. CD Projekt reported a profit of roughly $303 million for 2020 despite a very rough launch for Cyberpunk 2077, and it also became the most valuable videogame company in Europe, surpassing even Ubisoft, with a market value of more than $8.1 billion. I think it's fair to say that money isn't an obstacle. When Kickstarter first came to prominence in the game business, it was pretty much exclusively an avenue of funding for people who wouldn't otherwise be able to get their work published: small indie developers, boutique board game makers, Tim Schafer. And while it's no longer the exotic, exclusive club it used to be—and crowdfunding as a whole has spread across numerous different platforms—there's still something baffling and even a little uncomfortable about a multi-billion-dollar game publisher using it to churn cash for a project that, let's be honest, is as can't-miss as they come. An FAQ addresses other common Kickstarter questions, such as how to select your language preference (it's in the "Pledge Manager"), whether it will be available for purchase through regular retail channels (yes, but only the standard edition), and whether you'll be able to tack on any extras after the campaign is over (also yes). There's nothing about the rationale for using Kickstarter in the first place, though, so I've emailed CD Projekt to ask and will update if I receive a reply. The Witcher: Ronin Kickstarter runs until September 27.Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80. 6. Microsoft is now advertising that Outlook.com can be designated as the default email client in what could be great news for workplace users looking for a smoother user experience. The change, which would make Outlook.com as your default mail client for mailto: links, is being advertised to users with a new banner displayed above user's inboxes. The setting only appears to work in certain browsers, with MSPowerUser noting that it is applicable in Chrome, and possibly in Edge as well.Outlook switch "Your browser supports setting Outlook.com as the default email handler" the banner reads, offering users the chance to try it now, ask again later, or to not show the alert again. The feature makes use of the “URL protocol handler registration for PWAs” functionality introduced in Chrome 92 that allows for a smoother user experience when switching or installing web apps. Only some users will be able to make the change to begin with, with Microsoft likely testing the waters before rolling out the feature to a wider user base. The news is the latest update or change to Outlook as Microsoft looks to make its email service a more appealing choice to anyone currently using Gmail or other competing offerings. Recently, the company revealed that it is hard at work on a redesigned Gmail experience for its upcoming Windows 11 mega release. Set to launch within the next few weeks, Windows 11 is Microsoft's biggest release in years, and its email service, dubbed ‘Project Monarch’, is seen as a reboot of what came before, with a new user interface and smooth, clean design.Microsoft is also releasing a new feature for Outlook on the web that can scan what you've written and offer rewritten suggestions that can improve the tone of your emails. The new "Tone Detection" tool will give users real-time advice on how to better word your communications, as well as punctuation conventions, sensitive geopolitical references and general formality.Mike Moore is News & Features Editor across both TechRadar Pro and ITProPortal. 7. It took a little bit, but genuine sale prices on AMD's finest silicon—its Zen 3 processors—have actually started to pop up on occasion. One of the biggest discounts yet applies to the Ryzen 7 5800X, a great chip chip for both work and play. It's discounted to $349.99 on eBay via Antonline. That's $100 below its MSRP. It is also the cheapest it has ever been, and even undercuts pricing at Micro Center ($369.99), a retailer that often sells CPUs for the lowest price, with the caveat that it has to be picked up in-store. It's also worth noting that Antonline is an authorized AMD dealer, so in the rare case a warranty claim is needed, there shouldn't be any hassle. The Ryzen 7 5800X is based on AMD's latest generation architecture and is one of the best CPUs for gaming. It is an 8-core/16-thread chip with a 3.8GHz base clock, 4.7GHz max boost clock, and 32MB of L3 cache. It also supports PCI Express 4.0, so if paired with a compatible motherboard (X570 or B550 mostly), you can take full advantage of the fastest PCIe 4.0 SSDs on the market. This chip's biggest fault has always been its pricing. It has the cores, threads, clock speeds, and architecture to handle a variety of workloads with aplomb, but wasn't necessarily a super-compelling value against the previous generation or what Intel has to offer. But now that it's available for $100 below its launch price, even without a bundled cooler, the Ryzen 7 5800X is well worth added consideration.Paul Lilly Paul has been playing PC games and raking his knuckles on computer hardware since the Commodore 64. He does not have any tattoos, but thinks it would be cool to get one that reads LOAD"*",8,1. In his off time, he rides motorcycles and wrestles alligators (only one of those is true).
  8. Fortnite is entering the final week of Season 7, and you'll need to place warning signs this week in order to complete one of the last Legendary Quests of the season. There are a few places where you can do this, and we'll show you each of them so you can decide which route makes the most sense for you. This challenge will go live on Wednesday, September 8 at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET. Fortnite: Where To Place Warning Signs There are three towns in which you can place warning signs, and each town offers multiple spots for you to perform the task. Given that you need to place four warning signs in total, you could complete this challenge by only visiting one location if you're really efficient. We'll still show you all the spots though, just in case it takes multiple tries or you have to book it out of one region simply to survive the round. Let's start in Misty Meadows. There are three signs with which you can interact in this location. You can find them: Just off the northern road by the coffee shop In front of the deli at the end of the same road Outside the covered picnic area beside the clock tower If your travels take you instead to Dirty Docks, you can find four signs there too. Look for warning signs: Outside the central brick building with the jagged roof Outside on the northeast corner of the silver warehouse Outside on the southwest (opposite) corner of the same silver warehouse On the sidewalk near the tall orange cranes If neither locale suits you, you can find three more signs within Pleasant Park. Place warning signs: On the sidewalk beside the northeastern white house On the sidewalk between the central gazebo and the eastern brown house On the sidewalk opposite the western white house In narrative terms, you'll be placing these signs to warn the people of Apollo that something big is happening, and they may just be caught in the crash zone. Slone's final plan, Operation: Sky Fire, is set to deliver a final explosive sendoff to the alien invaders, and locations like Misty Meadows, Dirty Docks, and Pleasant Park may be made anew in Fortnite Season 8. Don't forget to finish off the complete list of Week 14 challenges before the operation is underway this weekend. It'll be your last chance to earn Season 7 XP.

  15. vThe second-generation BMW M2 will have even stronger performance and more versatility than the well-received current model when it reaches UK showrooms by the end of 2022, according to insiders. The new version of M division’s smallest model is based on the upcoming third-generation 2 Series Coupé, which has been comprehensively re-engineered with a revised line-up of longitudinally mounted engines, a new eight-speed automatic gearbox, an updated platform, a significantly stiffer body structure and more advanced electronic architecture. The changes provide the new, G87-generation M2 with much closer engineering ties to other M models than today’s M2 has. M division insiders say this will enable the new M2 to offer a further step up in performance while helping it to retain a reputation for dynamic excellence through the sharing of key components. An internal source told Autocar: “It’s more powerful, with greater torque, but sharper, too. It’s still puristic, a driver’s car, but with a broader spread of characteristics, a greater divide between comfort and sport, than what we’ve seen up to now.” Central to the model-specific changes for the upcoming Porsche Cayman GTS rival is the arrival of BMW M’s S58 engine. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit was introduced on the X3 M and X4 M, and more recently deployed in the new M3 and M4. It will replace the existing M2’s long-running N55 unit, introduced in 2009, as well as the S55 engine used by the more potent M2 Competition and M2 CS. Key elements of the S58 engine include a newly designed crankcase, a longer stroke, a reworked cylinder head and a more efficient induction system, which uses two mono-scroll turbochargers in place of the single turbocharger in the engine it replaces. As with the older S55 engine, it also gets a petrol particulate filter. Autocar understands the new inline powerplant, which will be updated to meet Euro 7 emission regulations during the M2’s planned seven-year life cycle, will be offered in two states of tune in a move mirroring that of the new M3 and M4 – both with a 7200rpm redline – although only the higher-output Competition car is likely to be available in the UK.Details remain under wraps more than a year before its planned introduction but standard M2 models are expected to receive up to 410bhp, with the successor to today’s M2 Competition set to offer up to 430bhp, just 50bhp short of the standard M3 and M4. The rise in power is claimed to be accompanied by a moderate lift in torque. Again, nothing is official but BMW M sources have revealed to Autocar that the new M2 could have as much as 428lb ft – 22lb ft more than the existing M2 Competition and M2 CS.BMW will offer the new M2 with the choice of either a standard six-speed manual or a new eight-speed torque-converter automatic with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. The auto replaces the current seven-speed dual-clutch item, which will no longer be available on the M2. Both the standard and Competition models will have rear-wheel drive with an electronically controlled M differential. Although four-wheel drive is now offered on the car’s M3 and M4 siblings, an xDrive M2 is not planned. The styling of the new M2 is closely related to that of the upcoming M240i xDrive. Distinguishing elements include a new-look front end with a lower and wider kidney grille than that seen on today’s M2 Competition. Set within a deep front bumper, it goes without traditional fixed vertical louvres, adopting electronically operated active elements that open and close to suit the cooling and heating demands of the new engine. The headlights, LED as standard, also adopt a more angular design and will be offered with optional laser projectors, with dynamic indicators housed within the front lenses. The bonnet adopts a prominent power dome and the wheel arches have been enlarged to accommodate wheels of up to 20in. A more pronounced shoulder line runs back to form wider haunches below the rear side windows. The windscreen and rear window are also more heavily raked than on the first-generation M2, giving it an altogether sleeker appearance. In keeping with more recent M models, the tail-lights have a heavily structured design with OLED graphics while the boot slopes down towards the rear and receives a larger lip spoiler than today’s model for added downforce. A wider diffuser is also integrated into the bottom of the rear bumper. An optional carbonfibre package will allow prospective customers to specify the new car with various carbonfibre elements, including the roof and door mirrors, although the M2 Competition is set to get a carbonfibre roof as standard. The new coupé has grown in size, albeit only moderately over today’s 4468mm-long, 1984mm-wide and 1410mm-tall M2 Competition. Along with the increase in dimensions, the wheelbase has been extended by 51mm, at 2744mm, and the tracks have been widened at the front and rear. Crucially, the new M2 will match the 50:50 weight distribution of the less powerful M240i.
  16. The US and EU are calling for an immediate investigation into the "shocking" claims of sexual harassment and rape of Afghan policewomen. It follows a BBC investigation which revealed female officers faced widespread abuse by their colleagues. A number of women told the BBC they were too scared to report the attacks, which were often by their superiors. The Afghan government says it is committed to change, but rights groups say perpetrators are rarely punished."Afghan women who choose to serve their country as police officers are courageous patriots," Ambassador Ross Wilson, the US Charge d'Affaires to Afghanistan, said in a statement. "They face formidable cultural, social, political and security barriers, and we and all Afghans should honour and support their service. These reports are shocking, and we urge their prompt investigation by Afghan authorities." The US also said the women who waived their anonymity to speak in the documentary must be given protection from further mistreatment. The EU said it had "a zero tolerance policy for such cases" and "strongly advocates" for cases to be fully investigated when they arise. The bloc had "intensified the work for a coherent reform of police anti-harassment policies", Nabila Massrali, spokeswoman for the EU's foreign affairs and security policy said. She added that the bloc would "take stronger measures should the situation not improve in the near future". The Afghan interior ministry told the BBC it was committed to "providing a safe work environment for women in the police force". It said it would pursue allegations of abuse and "prosecute those responsible as there is no tolerance about such cases" adding that it would "punish the perpetrators".The introduction of female police officers is a relatively new phenomenon in Afghanistan, and was seen as a sign of progress in the deeply conservative country. There are now 3,900 female officers in its force. However the BBC investigation found serious problems - from how women were treated, to how complaints were handled. In some cases, women have been sexually assaulted while trying to report attacks, or trying to get to safety shelters, the BBC investigation found. Momena Karbalayee said she was raped by a police chief after refusing an order to spend the night with officials. A court found the defendant not guilty. In March 2020, she covered herself in petrol, determined to set herself alight in the middle of a city square."If I burn myself, at least the government might do better for others," she said, moments before a crowd stopped Ms Karbalayee from igniting herself. She is still working as a police officer, and has changed departments. "Women need to see that a case has been handled successfully, and protection has been given to the victim after they have raised their voice," Hosna Jalil, former deputy interior minister, told the BBC. Ms Jalil believes she is no longer in the position because she had been "a loud voice" on the issue.
