  1. At a glance Two women have been hospitalised after they were attacked by a dog in the Republic of Ireland They are being treated for serious injuries The dog is understood to be an American bully XL Last month the UK announced plans to ban the breed after several fatal attacks Two women have been hospitalised after they were attacked by an American bully XL-type dog in the Republic of Ireland, gardaí (Irish police) have said. The women, one aged in her 30s and the other a teenager, are being treated for serious injuries. The incident happened at a residential property in St John's Park, Waterford, at about 13:00 local time on Friday. The dog was seized by Waterford City & County Council's dog warden and investigations are ongoing. American bullies have been involved in several high-profile, fatal attacks. Last month, the UK's prime minister announced plans to outlaw the breed. Rishi Sunak said the dogs were "a danger to our communities" and would be banned by the end of the year. What is the American bully? American bullies are said to have originated in the US in the late 1980s, when American pit bull terriers and American Staffordshire terriers were crossed. There are four variations: standard, pocket, classic and XL. The XL can weigh more than nine stone (60kg) and is strong enough to overpower an adult. The American bully is regarded as a specific breed in the US. However, it is not recognised as such by the main British dog associations, such as the Kennel Club. Bully Watch, a group of London-based policy experts, told BBC News the breed first appeared in the UK "around 2014 or 2015", and that numbers grew rapidly during the pandemic. The United Kennel Club in the US says that an American bully "makes an excellent family dog". "Despite its powerful appearance their demeanour is gentle and friendly," it says, but also notes that "dog aggression is characteristic of this breed". Link
  2. Former US Vice President Mike Pence has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race, saying "this is not my time". He made the announcement at the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. "We always knew this would be an uphill battle, but I have no regrets," he wrote in a statement. Mr Pence is the first major Republican candidate to suspend his campaign in a race led by former President Donald Trump. Mr Pence had languished in recent polls and had struggled to gain the support of Republican voters. The former vice president's campaign had also racked up large amounts of debt, with Mr Pence ending September owing $621,000 (£512,038) and having only US$1.2m (£989,446) in the bank - significantly less than other Republican rivals. "I am leaving this campaign, but I will never leave the fight for conservative values," he wrote in a statement addressed to his supporters. The 64-year-old lost the support of many Republican voters when he publicly broke with Mr Trump over the 6 January Capitol riot in 2021, and when he presided over the certification of Joe Biden's 2020 election results in Congress. Mr Trump admonished Mr Pence for lacking "courage" when he refused to overturn the Democratic leader's election victory. Some rioters were heard chanting "hang Mike Pence" as they stormed the halls of Congress in 2021, and since then many Trump loyalists have viewed him as a traitor. The former vice-president said in March that Mr Trump's encouragement of the rioters had "endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day". Read more: Who are the Republican hopefuls not named Trump? In his resignation, Mr Pence did not endorse any other Republican candidates for the presidential election. But he called on Americans to choose a leader that "will 'appeal to the better angels of our nature' and not only lead us to victory but also lead our nation with civility and back to those time-honoured principles that have always made America strong, prosperous and free." Mr Pence's decision to withdraw from the Republican presidential campaign came shortly before the third presidential debate on 8 November. Link
  3. The 2024 Subaru BRZ tS is an even sportier variant of the 10Best-winning sports car. It has performance upgrades to the suspension and brakes. Along with new wheels and visual tweaks, the tS has Brembo brakes and STI-tuned dampers. The BRZ tS starts at $36,465, which makes it the most expensive model. UPDATE 10/26/23: Subaru has released pricing for the 2024 BRZ lineup, which adds the performance-focused tS trim. It starts at $36,465, which makes it $2650 more than the Limited ($33,815) and $5150 more than the Premium base model ($31,315). The performance-oriented tS trim level is returning to the Subaru BRZ lineup for the rear-wheel-drive sports coupe's second generation. Like before, the package includes upgrades for the brakes and suspension along with enhanced visuals and special badging. Subaru revealed the 2024 BRZ tS at the Subiefest event in California yesterday, and now we have all sorts of photos of the new model and details about its performance upgrades. The key mechanical changes include Brembo brakes front and rear, different 18-inch wheels, and an "STI-tuned" suspension setup with Hitachi dampers. These brakes are the same larger rotors and upgraded pads found in the Toyota GR86's new Performance package for 2024. The setup has 12.8-inch rotors in front and 12.4-inch rotors in the rear, larger by 1.2 and 1.0 inch compared with the stock GR86 and BRZ. The Subaru's Hitachi dampers are different from the Toyota's Sachs units, though, so there will surely be differences in tuning between the two. Visually, the most obvious difference for the BRZ tS is the badge visible on the grille and the trunklid. The brake calipers are painted gold and the dark gray 18-inch wheels are slightly different than the standard car's. Inside, the tS gets blue stitching and a blue leather accent on the seats, plus STI logos for the start button and gauge cluster. There are no changes to the standard BRZ's 228-hp 2.4-liter flat-four engine, but the tS does come only with the six-speed manual transmission. The tS will be available in all of the 2024 BRZ's exterior color options. It will also have Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance features, which are a new addition to all 2024 BRZs equipped with manual transmissions. The BRZ tS will go on sale later this year and will likely start in the mid-$30,000 price range. Link
  4. de Bellingham scored an incredible equaliser and a 92nd-minute winner to help Real Madrid come from behind to beat rivals Barcelona on his first El Clasico appearance. Ilkay Gundogan's first Barca goal had put the hosts ahead after six minutes. But Bellingham smashed a sensational leveller in the 68th minute, finding the top corner from 30 yards out. The England midfielder then netted an injury-time volley to continue his fairytale start to his Real career. Bellingham, 20, now has 14 goals in 16 matches for club and country this season. Los Blancos' win meant they moved above Girona on goal difference at the top of La Liga, and four points clear of third-placed Barcelona. Bellingham proving his worth yet again Once again, Bellingham was Real Madrid's talisman and goal hero. The former Birmingham City midfielder arrived from Borussia Dortmund for 103m euros (£88.5m) this summer - and has proved his worth with crucial contributions. Bellingham has scored 13 goals in 13 appearances for the club with three assists, only failing to find the net in three matches. But Real and Bellingham had started slowly, as a lapse in concentration saw Gundogan pick up a loose ball in the box before sliding a calm finish for the opener. Barcelona almost grabbed a second straight after the restart when defender Inigo Martinez headed against the post and Real Madrid keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga kept out Ronald Araujo's effort from the rebound. Fermin Lopez also fired against the post as Xavi's side posed the greater attacking threat. But Real survived and equalised against the run of play when Bellingham collected the ball and drove an effort beyond Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. And in the closing stages the visitors were a level above in pursuit of the winner. It came when Dani Carvajal swung in a hopeful cross that was flicked on by Luka Modric and met by the onrushing Bellingham, who hooked in to decide a thrilling encounter. Link
  5. When Karen Garcia awoke suddenly at 4 a.m. last week, the room was spinning. Garcia, a mother of three who lives in Los Banos, Calif., was 35 weeks pregnant, and throughout her pregnancy, she has had vertigo. “The further along I get, the more I experience it,” said Garcia, 33, noting that she is on medication to help her symptoms — which usually works well. On the morning of Oct. 19, though, it did not. “Everything was turning. It was terrible,” she recalled. “It was a very strong vertigo episode that I hadn’t experienced in a long time.” Her husband, who commutes roughly three hours each way daily to the San Francisco area, had already left for his construction job. Garcia was home alone with her three children, ages 11, 9 and 8 — all of whom were asleep. Although she took her vertigo medication, she said, she couldn’t keep it down and was vomiting for several hours. “It was nonstop,” she said. By the time her children woke up around 7 a.m., “I had no strength in my body left,” Garcia said. “I was on my bathroom floor.” Her three children sprang to action. Garcia called 911, and — since she had no energy to talk — her children gave the dispatcher the details. “They were so amazing,” she said. “I could hear them frantically trying to help me.” Before long, a crew of emergency responders arrived at the scene, including Brian Thompson, a captain with the Los Banos Fire Department. Thompson and his colleagues quickly saw that Garcia was in medical distress. They called an ambulance, which took her to the Memorial Hospital Los Banos Emergency Department. Then, they turned their attention to the children, who were scared and upset. “They were definitely worried about mom,” Thompson said. “They were distraught.” Garcia and her family moved last year to Los Banos from Gilroy, Calif., which is about 48 miles away, and all of her relatives still live there. Garcia’s brother immediately headed over to the house to look after the children — but it would take him at least an hour to get there. In the meantime, Thompsons’s crew — which included two other firefighters — decided to wait with the three kids. They were on the phone with Garcia’s husband, who was “very concerned,” Thompson said, “and I reassured him we will be here until somebody gets here; we’ll treat them like they’re ours.” “I would hope that somebody would do that for my children and for my wife,” said Thompson, 54, a father of six. “It really does take a village. We all have to look out for one another.” Thompson decided his best option was to distract the children. “I asked the kids what their morning ritual was,” Thompson said. He started by serving them orange juice. After that, it was on to breakfast. “I got them involved to take out the toaster, the sugar and the cinnamon,” he said. “They helped me make them cinnamon sugar toast.” In a matter of minutes, the kids’ moods shifted, he said. “They were all over the house playing and showing us their toys and artwork,” Thompson said. “They were excited that the firemen were there making them breakfast.” “It took their mom off their minds,” he added. As the oldest member of the fire department, Thompson said, he tries to set an example for younger crew members. “I’m really trying to instill this belief that you should always be compassionate when doing your job,” he said. Once the children finished eating breakfast, the firefighters checked that their backpacks were packed and ready for school. About 30 minutes into being there, the firefighters got an emergency call, and a Los Banos Police Department officer arrived to continue looking after the children until their uncle came a short time later to take them to school. The officer watched cartoons with the kids. Garcia, who was released from the hospital around 6 p.m. that day, has recovered from the episode. “You can’t ask for anything more when you’re going through something like that than for someone to step in and distract your kids from what’s going on,” she said. “It was really a team effort on their part.” She said she is now feeling fine and the baby is healthy. But she’s going to be sure this doesn’t happen again. “We have a plan in place,” she said. “My family is not leaving me alone.” A family member now stays with her at all times in the event she has another severe vertigo episode. When Garcia was reunited with her children that evening, they were as chatty as ever. “They were so excited to tell me about their morning,” she said. “They had totally forgotten that I was sick.” She credits the emergency personnel for making that possible. The Los Banos Fire Department later shared a Facebook post with a photo of Thompson making the children breakfast, and praise poured in. The story was first reported by Eyewitness News 3. Although the ordeal was traumatic, Garcia said, she feels fortunate that her children were in good hands while she was not there. “I couldn’t have asked for a better crew to show up,” she said. “I’m so grateful." 7. A sheep spotted at the foot of steep cliffs on the shores of a Scottish firth has been dubbed Britain's loneliest sheep. Jill Turner, from Brora, said she first came across the ewe while kayaking along the Moray Firth's east Highland coast. She believes she has seen the same sheep again, with a very overgrown fleece, on a recent trip this year. Ms Turner told the Northern Times it bleated out to her and fellow kayakers. National newspapers have since picked up the story, leading to the ewe being nicknamed Britain's loneliest sheep. Animal welfare charity, the Scottish SPCA, said it was aware the sheep was stuck, but added that it had plenty of available food Ms Turner said she has tried contacting a number of organisations about helping the animal back up the cliffs. She hopes it might still be possible to get it to safety. It is not known who owns the sheep, but it is understood a farmer has looked at how it could be retrieved from the sea shore. However, any rescue would require specialist equipment due to the difficult terrain. Ms Turner was on a kayaking trip between Balintore and Nigg and was about to paddle from the Moray Firth into the Cromarty Firth when she first spotted the sheep in 2021. It was felt at the time the sheep would be able to find its own way to fields above the cliffs. But the same animal is believed to be still there - it looks similar and its fleece has overgrown due to not being sheared for two years. Scottish SPCA chief superintendent Mike Flynn said the charity was aware of the sheep being stranded at the bottom of a cliff. He said: "The sheep has ample grazing in the area but we have not been able to ascertain who the sheep belongs to. "We will continue to have further checks when the weather allows and it is safe to do so." Link .
  8. Asa Hutchinson’s presidential campaign manager is leaving the campaign next week due to differences over direction and whether the former Arkansas governor still has a path to the 2024 Republican nomination, according to two sources. Campaign manager Rob Burgess’ last day with the campaign will be October 31, according to one of the sources, who is close to the campaign. “Ultimately, the governor wanted to continue campaigning and Burgess didn’t share the Governor’s view of a potential pathway to the GOP nomination,” that source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to discuss the campaign’s personnel matters, said. “So, he is stepping aside so that Governor Hutchinson can find someone who shares his vision to continue the campaign,” the source said. The second source added that “Rob was a great leader, but as the Governor continues on, Rob, like many of us disagrees with the direction of the campaign.” CNN reached out to Burgess for comment. Ad Feedback Burgess has managed the campaign since Hutchinson launched his bid in April and helped him meet the donor threshold to appear on the first GOP presidential primary debate stage in Milwaukee. After his first debate appearance, Hutchinson failed to make the second debate and is in danger of missing the third debate next month. After not qualifying for the second debate, Hutchinson set a goal to improve his polling by Thanksgiving, after which he would assess his campaign. It’s the first major departure for the Hutchinson campaign, which had already been operating with fewer than five staffers. A number of Republican candidates have already suspended their bids. Most recently, conservative talk radio host Larry Elder announcing this week that he would no longer seek the 2024 GOP nomination. Elder, who threw his support behind front-runner and former President Donald Trump, joined former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, Michigan businessman Perry Johnson and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who have previously ended their bids. Link
  9. Donald Trump and three of his children will soon take the stand in a New York business fraud case. A judge ruled on Friday that Mr Trump's daughter, Ivanka, must testify in the case against her brothers and father. She was dismissed as a defendant in the case earlier this year - but her brothers Eric and Donald Jr were not. The New York Attorney General's Office said the former president will testify on 6 November and his three children will take the stand before him. Their testimony is expected over three days from Wednesday next week, starting with Donald Trump Jr. Judge Arthur Engoron has already ruled that Mr Trump inflated the value of his properties to secure favourable loans. The trial focuses on six other claims made in the lawsuit, including falsification of business records, insurance fraud and conspiracy. Mr Trump has previously said he would take the stand at the earliest opportunity. He and the other defendants have denied the allegations. His daughter Ivanka had previously sought not to take the stand, arguing that she had moved out of the city to Florida and had stepped away from the Trump Organization in 2017. But Judge Engoron said she still maintains ties to Trump businesses and real estate in New York. Prosecutors have argued that Ms Trump has important information to share about the events being examined in the case. In his ruling on Friday about Ivanka testifying, Judge Engoron sided with the prosecutors, writing: "Ms Trump has clearly availed herself of the privilege of doing business in New York." He cited documents showing that she still had ownership or management ties to some businesses in New York, and that she still owns Manhattan apartments. The civil fraud case was brought against the former president by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is a Democrat. Ms James is seeking $250m (£205m) in penalties and severe restrictions for Mr Trump's businesses. Mr Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination in the 2024 election, has dismissed the case as politically motivated and a "sham". Link
