Iran has temporarily released more than 54,000 prisoners in an effort to combat the spread of the new coronavirus disease in crowded jails. However, there is a learning curve with open source use and businesses need to not only be able to trust the open source software being used in their solutions, but they need to manage potential risks responsibly and get involved with the open source community. If not properly implemented or managed, open source software can introduce security vulnerabilities, compliance issues, copyright infringement and even create bad publicity for companies. “Even though companies’ technology depends heavily on open source, most organizations aren’t properly tracking it. They’re not properly monitoring their use of the open source and the third-party components,” Michael Lelchuk, manager of professional services at Flexera, said in a webinar. “It’s almost impossible to mitigate that risk…without knowing what’s in your code.” Because of this, Lelchuk explained open source software license compliance is more important than ever. In order to properly comply and create trust in the software supply chain, Lelchuk along with Mark Gisi, director of the open source program office at Wind River Systems, provided a number of recommendations on what to do and where to get started. Education: First and foremost, there needs to be an understanding about open source in general and the open source software used within a company, Lelchuk explained. Businesses need to educate employees as well as put processes and tools in place. Microsoft revealed its plans for Visual Studio through June 2020. The main focus will be on addressing top consumer feedback, improving UI Automation properties for better screen reader experiences, and improving performance. The developers behind Visual Studio laid out all of the planned adjustments that involve working with various languages and frameworks and added icons for features that are either in progress or completed. “Our goal is to clarify what’s coming so you can plan for upgrades and provide feedback on which features would make Visual Studio a more productive development environment for you and your team,” Microsoft wrote in a post that contains the roadmap in greater detail. On the roadmap, the focus is also on the ability to search and navigate within large or across multiple repositories, and improve support for networks using conditional access. Other completed adjustments include the added ability to group open documents by project in vertical tabs and the ability to minimize and maximize buttons on the Start window. “Our roadmap is driven largely by what we learn through ongoing customer research, as well as the feedback we get via our Developer Community portal. These features and time frames represent our current plans but may change based on what we learn,” Microsoft said, adding that additional features could be voted and commented on in the Developer Community Portal. The US has reported its first death from the coronavirus, in the north-west state of Washington. President Donald Trump said the patient was a "medically high-risk" woman in her late 50s. He said more cases were "likely" but that the US was prepared for any circumstance. Officials said they were expanding travel restrictions on Iran and urged Americans to avoid hard-hit parts of Italy and South Korea. More than 85,000 coronavirus cases have been reported around the world and almost 3,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization. The vast majority of infections and deaths are in China, where the virus emerged late last year. What is happening in the US? Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Mr Trump confirmed earlier reports that a person in Washington state had died from the coronavirus. Health officials have not identified the woman, but said the fatality occurred in the state's King County. They said the woman had not travelled to any high-risk areas. It comes after officials on the US West Coast reported three unexplained coronavirus cases - in California, Oregon and Washington - raising concerns the virus could be spreading within the community. A US citizen previously died in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus first appeared. Among the other 22 cases in the country, Mr Trump said four people were "very ill" with the virus. While acknowledging that more cases were expected, he also sought to quell fears over the outbreak. "Since the early stages of the foreign outbreak my administration has taken the most aggressive action in modern history to confront the spread of this disease," he said. "Our country is prepared for any circumstance. There is no reason to panic at all." He said healthy individuals "should be able to fully recover". Vice President Mike Pence announced that an existing ban on travel from Iran had been expanded to include any foreign national who has visited the country within the last 14 days. Iran has reported the most coronavirus deaths outside China. Americans were also urged not to visit hard-hit areas in global hot-spots Italy and South Korea. Mr Pence said the US was working with local officials to coordinate screening of travellers entering the US from those countries. What about France? France earlier announced that it had banned all indoor gatherings of more than 5,000 people, as part of efforts to contain the country's coronavirus outbreak. Measures announced after an emergency cabinet meeting also include the cancellation of the Paris half-marathon which was to be held on Sunday. In the worst-hit area, north of Paris, all public gatherings have been banned. The total number of cases of the new coronavirus in France rose to 100 on Saturday. Two patients have died.
