Londoner has just been awarded costs and damages of tens of thousands of pounds against a chartered surveyor who didn’t spot Japanese knotweed growing in their garden. In a case likely to have surveyors checking their botanical guide books, the owner sued not only for the cost of the removal of the invasive plant from their property but also of “making good” the garden and distress and inconvenience suffered. The judge also took into account the diminution of value of the property. The owner commissioned a full structural survey when purchasing a ground-floor flat in 2014. The survey made no mention of knotweed so the owner went ahead with the purchase. But the following year, their gardener found signs of the plant. Environet, a company specialising in knotweed removal, confirmed the plant was in three sites in the garden and had been there for at least three years. The owner paid the company to remove it, at a cost of more than £10,000. Japanese knotweed has long been feared by property owners, and London is a hotspot. Just about now, new shoots of the bamboo-like plant are emerging and will quickly reach a height of two metres, while the strong roots can rampage under fences, damage paths and patios and work their way inside the cavity walls of houses, even emerging two storeys up out of the chimney stack. Removing knotweed from the London Olympics site cost £70m. If you allow knotweed to escape from your garden into a neighbour’s you could be prosecuted, or given an Asbo for causing a nuisance. It gets even more problematic if you are moving house. If you have knotweed growing in your garden you must declare it if you sell and this is likely to reduce the value of your property. Mortgage lenders will want an insurance-backed guarantee that the knotweed has been eradicated before agreeing funds to a potential buyer. Nic Seal from Environet says: “Even when treated there’s still a risk valuers will say there is a residual diminution of the property of two to five per cent.” The costs for knotweed removal in an average London garden, he says, are around £2,500 plus VAT to treat with herbicide and £5,000 to £10,000 to dig it out. So what should you do if you find knotweed in your garden? If you have a major infestation or you plan to sell your home in the next five years, contact a specialist. Most mortgage companies want a firm associated with the trade body the Property Care Association, so check its website to find a member near you. However, if you have only a small clump and don’t plan on moving any time soon, you could aim to get rid of it yourself, says RHS chief horticultural adviser Guy Barter. “It’s evil stuff. It’s a lot of work and not feasible if there’s a vast infestation, but you can dig it out with a spade. “Because it’s classified as ‘controlled waste’, you can’t let any plant material leave the garden. So stack it up to dry on plastic or concrete and then burn it. Or put it in rubble bags and leave it to die for a few years to be sure.” Barter suggests combining digging up the plant with a herbicide such as Roundup. “But if you’re organic, just dig it up.” If knotweed is coming in from a neighbouring garden, he says to dig a deep trench on the boundary and line it with a strong root barrier. Bamboo makes a great urban privacy screen, rapidly growing to 6ft. But the roots of “running” varieties can travel 20ft, easily ducking under a fence or wall and popping up next door in the form of thick, spiky shoots. If you plant bamboo, make sure you choose one described as “clump-forming” so it doesn’t get out of control. If your neighbour’s bamboo is coming into your garden, talk to them about it first, suggests Barter. If they won’t remove it, you could offer to pay for a contractor to do it. And if this doesn’t work, dig a trench at least 20in deep and line it with a strong root barrier. In this case, a nice clump of bamboo leaves between you and them might be a welcome thing.

Intel's 10th generation Comet Lake CPUs are seemingly right around the corner. These processors are planned to take on AMD's Ryzen 3000 series chips. According to a YouTube video (which has been privatized), Dell has shown these processors are planned to be installed in the latest XPS Tower desktop computers. The exciting part is that Intel has not officially announced any 10th Generation Comet Lake CPU as of yet. Dell's 2020 XPS Tower PCs are set to feature Intel's 10th Generation desktop CPUs "Create without limits using the all-new XPS Tower. Featuring powerful performance, a minimalist design, and a highly expandable chassis," Dell writes in the video's description, this video has hence been privatized. While it usually is bizarre to see OEM manufacturers have unreleased processors, but with the close relationship that Intel and Dell have makes this fact less surprising. Intel has already released X-series chips, including the 10th Gen Core i9-10980XE with 18 cores; however, these CPUs are targetted at the HEDT platforms and not mainstream platforms like the LGA 1200 socket which will house the 10th Gen Comet Lake-S CPUs. The 10th generation of these chips is a crucial component in Intel's fight against AMD's third-generation Ryzen lineup, and this included the $499 flagship 12 core/ 24 thread Ryzen 9 3900X. Intel's Comet Lake processor lineup is still going to be using Intel's 14-nanometer process, which is a huge disadvantage compared to AMD's 7nm Ryzen CPUs. The XPS Tower is built around offering both good hardware at competitive pricing, and this tower is wrapped in an unassuming packaging. From what was shown in the video, the 2020 refresh of the XPS tower will modernize the design, while still allowing for easy upgradeability ( or as Dell's named it "infinite upgradeability"). The video also shows off the inclusion of GeForce RTX graphic card options with support for graphics cards that draw up to 225 watts of power. Sadly, this rules out the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and GeForce RTX 2080 Super, which both draw at a maximum of 250 watts, but the standard GeForce RTX 2080 is below the 225W mark by just 10 watts. The Comet Lake processors will scale up to Core i9 10 cores and 20 threads, this series of processors will also include a Core i7, Core i5 and a Core i3 option, all of these processors are announced to have hyperthreading.

Previous methods of identity verification aren’t as efficient today when there is so much more data in circulation. Augmented intelligence has entered the arena to provide much more accurate solutions for ID verification. Previous methods just required basic information of where someone lives and the applications would then just check a database. One company called Jumio utilizes pictures of government-issued IDs to verify whether this is in fact the correct person, who then has to take a selfie that matches the original ID. AI can adjust and see the different security features that are particular to passports from certain areas to see if it’s legitimate, whether that’s a watermark or a photo, or the ID number. Where AI falls down is where AI can’t read the security feature, whether that’s due to fluorescent lighting or glare found in the picture, said Dean Nicolls, the vice president of global marketing at Jumio. “When AI sees an ID and there’s a lot of glare or a lot of blur on it, the first thing it’s going to say is I can’t read it,” Nicolls said. “Solutions that are 100% automated that rely on AI completely are going to essentially say, sorry, I can’t read the image and I’m going to return a nonrenewable.” “So that leads to a really bad customer experience,” Nicolls continued. “And for our business customers, like in this case, the bank, now they’re put in a very bad position because now they’re being told that 30% of the transactions are unreadable.” Jumio’s solution employs actual human agents who are trained to find out where the AI fell short and to then render a decision. The AI additionally tells the agent specifically where its capabilities fell short. For example, it says there was glare on the face due to the overhead lighting. So now the agent only needs to look at the image on the face, rather than the whole ID. “The augmented technology helps our agents, guides them and tells them where to look and what to review to ultimately render a yes or no verification decision,” Nicolls said. Another way in which humans help train the AI is by looking at the models created for learning to help determine where AI fell short, creating a real-time feedback loop built into the process, Nicolls explained. “Essentially the way AI works is you throw a bunch of data at it and then you let the data determine the algorithms. Not only do our agents decide by giving a yes or no decision, but they are letting us know where the AI fell short. And the fact that we have human agents that are looking at a portion of those that are instructing us where the algorithms fell short, that’s also speeding up the learning process,” Nicolls said. Nicolls said that the goal is to eventually take AI algorithms from 20% of cases that are currently unreadable down to only 5% or 10%. However, the role of verification experts is still important in making that AI iteratively better over time. Augmented intelligence can prove useful in areas where the data isn’t perfect. For example, in radiology there are perfect chest scans that augmented intelligence works off of and in that case it could almost replace the radiologist, according to a Stanford study. However, with things like ID verification a lot of the times the data isn’t perfect. “People think of AI as being a panacea and they think that AI can solve all the world’s problems, right? And in many cases it can solve a lot of problems when you have a lot of perfect data,” Nicolls said. “Most of the situations where I see AI applied, data isn’t perfect and you deal with some uncleanliness and this is where augmented intelligence really, really helps.”

A cruise ship carrying 3,500 people is waiting off the coast of California while tests for coronavirus are carried out on dozens of them. One passenger died and at least four others became infected on a previous voyage by the ship, the Grand Princess. Test kits were delivered by military helicopter on Thursday as the vessel sat off San Francisco. The US has now recorded about 200 cases and 12 deaths as the global struggle with the virus continues. More than 92,000 cases have been recorded worldwide, with 80,552 in China, where the virus originated. China also accounts for the vast majority of deaths - 3,042 to date. Earlier, it was revealed by the folks over at NotebookCheck that NVIDIA was working on SUPER variants for the mobility Turing lineup too. The same is true for the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, which is another 50% performance uplift over the RTX 2070 SUPER / RTX 2080 mobility GPUs. And not surprisingly, the leaked slide also mentions Intel's 10th Generation Comet Lake-H CPU as a part of the test configuration which makes sense since these new GeForce RTX SUPER GPUs will be featured in laptops featuring Intel's latest processors. NVIDIA's CEO already showcased how their current GeForce RTX mobility lineup is faster than even the next-generation console lineup which puts the refreshed SUPER series in a league of its own. It would be the ultimate combo for users who want powerful performance on-the-go and it looks like this is the niche where Intel and NVIDIA would continue to dominate for a while until AIBs start using RTX 2080 SUPER GPUs in AMD's Ryzen 4000 'Renoir' based notebooks.

Here is a breakdown of upcoming changes: JEP 305: Pattern Matching for instanceof (Preview): Pattern matching allows common logic to be expressed “concisely and safely.” According to OpenJDK documentation, the motivation for introducing this feature is that there are currently only ad-hoc solutions for pattern matching and they felt it was “time for Java to embrace pattern matching.” JEP 343: Packaging Tool (Incubator): This tool can be used to package self-contained Java applications. JEP 345: NUMA-Aware Memory Allocation for G1: This will improve G1 performance on large machines. JEP 349: JFR Event Streaming: This allows for continuous monitoring of JDK Flight Recorder data. JEP 352: Non-Volatile Mapped Byte Buffers: This release adds new file mapping modes that allow the FileChannel API to be used to create MappedByteBuffer instances that refer to non-volatile memory. JEP 358: Helpful NullPointerExceptions: Now NullPointerExceptions generated by the JVM will describe which variable was null. JEP 359: Records (Preview): Records provide a syntax for declaring classes that act as transparent holders for immutable data. Fashion retailer Boohoo has been praised for an advertising campaign in which a model’s stretch marks are proudly on display. The image, posted to the shop’s website this week, shows a woman modelling a £9 white bodysuit with unedited stretch marks on her thighs. Several shoppers have taken to Twitter to applaud Boohoo’s decision not to edit the marks out. One shopper tweeted: “Well done @boohoo for not feeling that this gorgeous girl’s stretch marks had to be airbrushed out. Glad to see some normality favoured over the usually idealised image. While another wrote: “They have weight on their hips, they have bums, they have stretch marks! Thank you for promoting positive body image. “What a game changer. The rest of the fashion industry should learn from this.” This isn’t the first time the fashion brand has featured models with stretchmarks, which are often airbrushed out in fashion shoots by many brands. As for what to expect, NVIDIA's Graphics Technology Conference or GTC is primarily targetted at the HPC/AI/DNN segments. There have been rare cases when we saw a gaming or a consumer-grade product being announced at the event. This year, all eyes are on NVIDIA as they release the next-generation GPU architecture, codenamed Ampere. We have already spotted two next-generation GPUs, featuring insane core counts and up to 40% faster than existing GPUs despite lower clock speeds. This falls in line with previous rumors that had stated that the next-generation GPUs from NVIDIA would be up to 50% faster than the existing generation and offer twice as much efficiency. A recent statement by Indiana University, who is working on the new Big Red 200 supercomputer, reveals that the next-generation Tesla GPUs replacing the Volta V100 are up to 70-75% faster which is just insane amounts of performance and makes sense if the specifications listed above are true. What all of these reports go off to show us is that the next-generation NVIDIA lineup, whether it be for consumers or HPC, is going to be literally insane and that is one reason why NVIDIA has kept the crown in the GPU segment for so long, with a market share split of 75-25 (NVIDIA/AMD). The Apache Software Foundation has announced the release of Apache Brooklyn 1.0. Apache Brooklyn is an open-source framework for modeling, monitoring, and managing applications. “I am excited to see the 1.0 release of Apache Brooklyn,” said Geoff Macartney, vice president of Apache Brooklyn. “This reflects the maturity and stability that Brooklyn has reached after nearly five years as a Top-Level Apache project.” The tool provides a REST API and GUI for managing provisioning and deployment, monitoring application health, understanding the dependencies between components, and applying policies for managing applications. According to the team, highlights of Apache Brooklyn 1.0 include support for public and private clouds, a user-friendly UI, REST API and CLI tools, a stable blueprint language and API, and “batteries included” entities and policies that cover clusters, auto-scaling, replacing unhealthy components, and more. “Apache Brooklyn has been in use for some time in production environments,” said Richard Downer, Apache Brooklyn 1.0 release manager. “I’m delighted we can now announce our 1.0 release.
