In an age of endless doom-scrolling and in-built wellness checks, we’ve somehow ended up at a point where we want our phones to do less. Well, maybe not less – we still need to take nice photos and stockpile music and cheat at pub quizzes with super fast 5G – but we just don’t want our devices to be clamouring for our attention every second of the day. That’s perhaps the most impressive aspect of the new Phone (2) from London-based tech brand Nothing: the fact that its standout features are geared towards you living a less phone-centric existence. The improved Glyph LED strips on the back can be programmed to signal messages, calls etc., meaning you can place the phone on its front throughout the day. The new monochrome OS is geared towards reducing distractions, from the ability to filter app icons through a greyscale and remove labels, to a widget-heavy (and highly adjustable) home screen that lessens the need to cycle through apps in the first place. The camera is a big upgrade on the brand’s previous model, with a 32 MP front camera and a dual rear camera system made up of two advanced 50 MP sensors, and the whole thing just looks and feels far more premium. It's available for purchase on 17 July, and pre-orders are open now. Nothing, starting at £579

How to get Windows 11 cheap (or even for free) Windows licenses are expensive—almost painfully so. Shelling out $139 for Windows 11 Home or $200 for Windows 11 Pro feels rough when Linux is free, since that much cash is easily a third of a budget PC build. But with less developer support for Linux, Windows is an inescapable necessity for most of us. What’s not a given is paying full retail. Yes, it’s possible to snag a discount on Windows 11. The amount you’ll save depends on how much hassle you can tolerate—as well as your circumstances. If you’re lucky, you could technically get it for free. Legitimately for free, since installing Windows without ever activating it doesn’t count as getting a full, sanctioned copy of Windows. Here’s how, in several different ways. Better yet, these often apply for Windows 10 licenses too, although that operating system will stop receiving updates in 2025. Simple upgrade: Trade up from Windows 10 to Windows 11 You can only trade up to the same kind of edition—so if you have a Windows 10 Home license, you’ll move up to Windows 11 Home. Likewise if you have a Pro license. Our Windows 11 upgrade checklist explains how to make a successful transition, but in a nutshell: First verify that your PC meets Windows 11’s requirements. Then either run the Windows 11 installation assistant or create Windows 11 installation media for a clean install. Before performing a clean install, make sure you have your Windows 10 license key written down somewhere, in case your hardware isn’t automatically recognized and you need to manually activate Windows. If you’re not sure what your key is, run a program like Magical Jelly Bean Product KeyFinder in Windows 10. (Our step-by-step guide explains how it works.) And when performing a clean install of Windows 11, remember to match your edition type (Home or Pro) to what you had in Windows 10. Curious what happened to the free upgrades from Windows 7 or 8/8.1 to Windows 10? Unfortunately, Microsoft finally shut that down in September 2023. Easiest discount: An OEM license Price: $110 (Windows 10 Home), $150 (Windows 10 Pro) Our next suggestion is a method that’s available to everyone and has the least amount of hassle: purchasing an OEM license. License types are different than operating system versions. They dictate what you can do with the software, while OS versions are distinguished by the features available. Multiple Windows license types exist, but the two commonly available to a home user are the retail and OEM varieties. When you walk into a store or pop over to Microsoft’s website, handing over that $139 for Windows 10 Home (or $200 for Windows 10 Pro) gets you the retail license. If you visit an online retailer like AmazonRemove non-product link or Newegg, you can find both retail and OEM licenses for sale. You can usually spot an OEM license by its price, which tends to run about $110 for a Windows 10 Home license and $150 to $200 for a Windows 10 Pro license. All the features of the operating system version are the same for both license types. The difference is that with a retail license, you can transfer the license key to a different PC later on. The process for activating a Windows 10 OEM license is the same as for a retail license. You can’t do that with an OEM license. In exchange for a lower price, you get to use the license key on only one PC, period. If you build a system but roll a new one four years later, you can’t transfer the license to the new machine. Also, if the hardware used to identify your system fails—namely, the motherboard—Microsoft’s registration servers won’t recognize your license as valid after you replace the dead part. Microsoft has historically been kind about such situations, however. You can usually call to reactivate the license after replacing a fried mobo. But it is an extra hassle. For further savings through a retailer, you’ll have to wait for the rare sale or Black Friday, when you can get an OEM license in the neighborhood of $85 (Windows Home) to $120 (Windows Pro). Otherwise, you can pick up a cheaper license through PCWorld’s very own software store. (Yes, that’s really us.) We’re currently selling Windows 11 Home licenses for $59.99, and Windows 11 Pro licenses for $79.99, with Windows 10 options also available. Sometimes we even put them on sale! Deepest savings: The education discount Price: $0 to $15 (Windows 10 Education) Not all student discounts are reserved for the under-24 set. Your local community college might be a source for a free or extremely discounted copy of Windows—and nearly the equivalent of Windows Enterprise, to boot. You’ll just have to put in some legwork (perhaps literally) to get it. As mentioned above, license types determine what you can do with Windows—and who can use it, as well. Through the Academic Volume Licensing agreements, schools can purchase access to Windows 10 or 11 Education for their students, faculty, and staff. Some make it available only on campus machines. Others will grant a license for use on a home machine. In that latter camp are a number of community colleges, and they often make the Windows license free or supremely affordable (usually $15). The catch: You have to sign up for at least one course to qualify for campus discounts. The site your college uses to administer Windows licenses will vary. Many state schools use OnTheHub, which has a tool to look up your school. To get access to the software, you’ll typically need to register for your class first, then find and register separately at whatever online store your campus uses for software purchases. (Many community colleges use OnTheHub as their distributor, so you can use their lookup tool to begin research about your school’s options.) The storefront will require verification of your student status before you can “buy” Windows. A one-unit class usually counts though, and depending on your state, it can cost as little as $76 including administrative fees. Typical options are usually of the physical education or dance variety (swim, ballet, jazz, boot camp workouts, etc.), but you can also find the occasional class on topics like Beginning Drawing, Intro to HTML & CSS, and Video for the Web. If you were already planning on taking a class in one of these subjects, you’re getting an amazing deal. The Education edition of Windows, which is similar to the Enterprise edition, includes po[CENSORED]r Windows Pro features like Bitlocker encryption and the Sandbox feature. You’re essentially getting Windows Pro (and then some) for as much as 60 percent off and you get to learn something new. Windows 10 Pro’s Bitlocker feature makes encrypting a drive a very easy process. Even if you aren’t interested in the classes, you’re still paying considerably less than what you would for even a Windows Pro OEM license. We don’t encourage truancy, but there’s nothing saying you have to show up for class, so long as you’re comfortable with a failing grade on your record. Obviously, if your local community college doesn’t have an agreement with Microsoft in place, this strategy won’t work. Also, if the total cost of the class, administrative fees, and license fee adds up to more than the retail cost of a Windows Pro license, and you wouldn’t have otherwise taken the class, that negates this deal, too. In those cases, your main options are the OEM license (outlined above) or buying through a reseller (detailed below). Note: If you use this method, also keep an eye out for other software deals through your school. For example, your school might offer a free Microsoft 365 account, or a heavily discounted Adobe Creative Cloud account (usually $20 per month, but we’ve seen it for as little as $80 per year). Low prices with a big caveat: Resellers Price: Under $30 (Windows 10 Home and Pro) Scoring Windows 10 at an 85-percent discount (or more) is possible, and it’s not even difficult. But this approach comes with a salt mine of caution. Platforms like eBay and Kinguin allow buyers to purchase product keys from third-party sellers. Some sites, like Kinguin, specialize in digital software sales—to buy Windows, you’ll find the listings for Windows 10 or 11 Home (or Windows 10 or 11 Pro), pick a seller from the list, then add their product to your cart and check out. What makes the license keys so cheap is that they’re gray market at best. In other words, the keys aren’t illegal, but they’re likely extras from a volume licensing agreement and not meant to be sold individually to home users. So they come with risk. Critics of this method rightly point out that you can buy keys that don’t work, or eventually lose their activation status because of their unknown origins. And that has happened to some people. Customer service is often poor for these kinds of sites, too, leaving you high and dry. Fans of this method say many people never run into issues, and in fact urge you to find the keys as cheap as possible (usually through eBay) to minimize problems. You can also buy with a credit card for some added protection. If you go this route, you should only get Windows Pro keys. The cost difference is often negligible from Home and you get better features like Bitlocker encryption and other Pro features. But what we actually recommend is to buy through reputable sources of cheaper keys instead. For example, some professional organizations are able to negotiate deals for their members—we suggest starting there. You can also check to see if your favorite media sites have special pricing for readers. PCWorld’s own software store is a good place to investigate—it offers Windows Home and Pro keys at sizable discounts (often it’s regularly as low as $60 for Home and $80 for Pro), and the keys are guaranteed to work. Windows 11's Latest Cumulative Update Breaks AMD Adrenalin Control Panel Users can uninstall the problematic update if they get issues According to a community post on the AMD forums, Microsoft's latest cumulative preview update KB5030310 can break AMD's Adrenalin graphics control panel and can cause custom settings to be reset inside the control panel every time the system reboots. Thankfully, Microsoft's latest update does not break graphics driver functionality, but it will be irritating for users that use the Adrenalin control panel a lot. According to responses on the AMD forum, several AMD users have experienced this Adreanlin resetting problem with the latest Windows update. The issue isn't super serious, AMD's graphics drivers still work fine, and the Adrenalin control panel is functional, save for the part where custom user settings get reset at every reboot. So if you are a regular graphics card user and leave everything at their default settings, you shouldn't have any issues. But if you are an enthusiast and love to tinker with all of AMD's fancy features like Hyper RX, Anti-Lag, Radeon Boost, or RSR, this problem could be very frustrating to deal with. Microsoft's latest cumulative preview update isn't huge, but it ironically provides a plethora of bug fixes for Windows 11. Some of these fixes include a fixes surrounding Excel, the Korean touch keyboard, the search box tooltip, the search button, sleep mode, iCloud Calendar, and Contacts. For full details check out Microsoft's patch notes. If you own a Radeon GPU, it would probably be best to wait on this update. Apparently, the problem can also be fixed by uninstalling the update if you have already installed it. Though this issue has only been confirmed from the AMD community forum post we mentioned above, so there's a chance some Radeon users won't be affected. Click here to find out more information

Domestic cat, thousands of years of coexistence The first domestic cats, these animals have accompanied us in our daily lives for millennia, the first signs speak of Ancient Egypt, but we are still discovering many of their secrets. The bumps on cats' tongues are actually tiny barbs called papillae, and understanding how they work could help us invent brushes that make cats less allergenic and better clean human hair. Domestic cats, whatever their breed, are all members of the same species, Felis silvestris catus, which has had a relationship with humans for a long time. The ancient Egyptians would have been the first to domesticate cats, 4,000 years ago, but there are archaeological records that place cats (or their ancestors) coexisting with humans in the Middle East and Europe thousands of years before. Feral cats were probably attracted to human communities by the abundance of rodents there, and their ability to hunt them endeared them to their inhabitants. The first Egyptians worshiped a goddess in the shape of a cat and even mummified their favorite pets to accompany them on their journey to the other world...accompanied by also mummified mice! Later, civilizations around the world adopted cats as companion animals. Domestic cat behavior Like their wild relatives, domestic cats are natural hunters, able to stalk their prey and pounce on them with their claws and teeth. They are particularly effective at night, when their reflective eyes give them much clearer vision than their victims. They also have very keen hearing. Like all felines, they are agile and fast and their long tails help them have an extraordinary sense of balance. (Related: The legend of the "demonic cat" roaming the US Capitol) Related gallery: Stray cats of the world Cats communicate by marking trees, posts or furniture with their paws or urine. Leaving their trail is their way of informing others of the extent of their territory. Their vocal repertoire ranges from purring to screeching. The diet of domestic cats has remained predominantly carnivorous throughout evolution, which is why they have developed a simple stomach, suitable for digesting raw meat. They have also maintained a rough tongue that helps them extract every last bit of meat from animals' bones (and also groom themselves). Their diets, however, have varied with the treats offered by men, although they can complete it with their own hunting trophies. (Related: Domestic cats killed all 232 animals in this photo in just one year) Left or right handed? In 2018, a team of scientists discovered in a study published in Animal Behavior that many domestic cats show a preference for the right or left front paw when walking down stairs, stepping on an object, or reaching for food. These preferences also vary by sex: males typically prefer to use their left paw, while females are more likely to be right-handed. "We think this difference is linked to sex hormones," lead author Deborah Wells, a psychologist at Queen's University Belfast, says in this National Geographic article, although she says researchers don't know how or why it happens. https://www.nationalgeographic.es/animales/gato-domestico

N.Y. judge orders Trump to delete 'disparaging' post about his law clerk and threatens sanctions The judge said he was issuing a partial gag order after Trump posted the clerk's name and picture, suggesting she had a relationship with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The judge presiding over Donald Trump's $250 million civil fraud trial in New York issued a partial gag order Tuesday after the former president trashed his law clerk on social media. "Personal attacks on members of my court staff are unacceptable, inappropriate and I won’t tolerate it," an angry Judge Arthur Engoron said following Trump's post and comments about his law clerk. "Consider this a gag order on all parties with respect to posting or publicly speaking about any member of my staff," Engoron said, warning that violations would be met with swift and meaningful sanctions. Trump blasted Engoron’s law clerk on social media earlier Tuesday and then amplified the attack in brief remarks to reporters during the lunch break. Trump had posted on Truth Social a different user’s Instagram post showing Engoron’s law clerk at an event where she posed with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. In his post, Trump insinuated that she had a personal relationship with Schumer. He then referred to it to reporters during the lunch break, saying: “You saw what was just put out about Schumer and the principal clerk? That is disgraceful.” The trial was supposed to resume at 2:15 p.m., but it was delayed for about 45 minutes. During that time period, Trump's lawyer Chris Kise and Eric Trump were seen approaching Engoron's chambers, and the Truth Social post was removed from Trump's feed. Engoron, who has not reacted publicly to Trump's numerous attacks calling him biased and a "Trump-hating judge," made it clear his staff is out of bounds. He said that the comments on the post about his clerk were "disparaging" and "untrue" and that they included personally identifying information, and he said he had ordered the post to be deleted. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/judge-orders-trump-delete-disparaging-post-law-clerk-threatens-sanctio-rcna118667

What is regen braking and is it actually useful? Electric motors in hybrids and EVs have brought regen braking to mainstream cars. So, what on earth is it? Regenerative braking. This clumsy phrase has slowly crept into car-person lexicon as electric and hybrid vehicles have become more of A Thing. So if you’ve been reading TopGear.com’s reviews and group tests for years - and of course, that is the kind of behaviour we absolutely condone - you’ll already be well aware of what regen braking is and how it works. But if you’re encountering regenerative braking for the first time, or if the tech has never been properly explained to you, this article is for you. Actually, even if you think you know how it all works, read it anyway. There are a lot of dodgy explanations out there and there’s every chance you’ve been handed the wrong end of the stick. What is regenerative braking? Regenerative braking - or regen braking - is what happens when you begin to slow down in an electric or hybrid car: if it’s got an electric motor, it’ll likely be capable of regen braking. You see, when you lift off the accelerator an electric motor will produce an electromagnetic force that acts against the forward motion of the wheels. So instead of coasting you’ll begin to scrub off speed, in a similar way to engine braking on a petrol car. Great, but… why do I want that? Efficiency, friend. Unlike normal brake discs, which simply convert kinetic energy into heat that’s lost forever, regen braking allows electricity to be harvested from the motor and then recycled back into the battery to be used again as you drive. In an electric car or plug-in hybrid vehicle, this means you’ll get a little bit of range back every time you slow down. And the same is true of less capable hybrids, some of which can manage a mile or two on electric power alone at town speeds by re-using the energy you stored by regeneration. Gotcha. Exactly how does regen braking work? Right, let’s not overcomplicate this. An electric motor runs a current through a circuit, creating an electromagnetic force that causes it to spin. This spinning motion is what drives your EV’s wheels and propels it forwards (or backwards when the current is reversed). However, when you stop shoving electricity from the battery to the motor - i.e. when you ease off the accelerator - the momentum of the car through the wheels becomes the dominant force in the system. This sends that current in the opposite direction and hey presto; your electric motor has become a generator, with electricity flowing back into the battery. Most cars capable of regen braking will show you this in real time on the speedo, with a dial displaying how much power you’re using on the throttle and how much you’re generating when you slow down. Do I need to drive any differently? You don't have to. But a small change to your driving style can help you take full advantage. Most electric cars and PHEVs will allow you to choose how strong you want the regenerative braking force to be, often by way of flappy paddles behind the steering wheel. This means you can pick a braking strength that suits the kind of driving you’re doing. For example, if you’re cruising along on the motorway you’ll probably want weak regen so you can drive as smoothly as possible. But in traffic around town, high regen will be better suited to the stop-start nature of your journey. And for the avoidance of any doubt, you will still have a brake pedal that operates physical brake discs and calipers. Electric and hybrid cars will blend these and the regen automatically, with the best doing so seamlessly and the worst making it difficult for you to judge how far to press the pedal each time. Beware. Any tips? With these blended systems, practise using that dial next to the speedo so that you press the 'brake' (actually brake plus regen) pedal just far enough that the needle goes close to 100 per cent regeneration, but don't then press the pedal any harder. That way you won't be using the discs. Well, y'know, press harder if the alternative is a frontal smash. But what we're saying is, try to drive with anticipation and slow up gently. The bottom line is, regen braking doesn’t make the brake pedal redundant. Unless perhaps your EV has a single-pedal driving mode. Single-pedal driving? Yes, that’s the blanket term for stuff like Nissan’s e-Pedal. Single-pedal driving is where the regenerative braking force is set to maximum, and it also brings in the brakes at low speed where regen doesn't work so much. In pretty much every normal scenario aside from an emergency stop, you’ll be able to come to a complete halt without using the brake pedal at all. This takes some getting used to but can be a very intuitive way of driving when you’ve got the hang of it. It can also take the strain out of city driving with only your right ankle doing any work on the accelerator. And hands on the wheel of course. Any other benefits of regen braking? We’ve covered improved efficiency (and, ergo, lower CO2 emissions on hybrids) and boosted range, but there’s another perk of regenerative braking: brake wear will be significantly reduced because you’ll be much less reliant on the discs and calipers. That in turn means less brake dust in the air; normally a big contributor to harmful particulate matter, especially in cities. And breathe. Any drawbacks? Not really, although we should add that regen braking only makes your car more efficient in certain situations. Remember, braking when you don’t need to in a combustion-engined car will waste fuel as you’ll have to accelerate again, and this principle still stands for EVs and hybrids. This is because the round-trip conversion of kinetic energy back into electricity isn’t itself 100 per cent efficient, so 50 metres of braking won’t give you back the whole 50 metres of range. It doesn’t work like that. So how much range will regen braking actually give me? It’s hard to say, because it depends on how efficiently (that word is getting a proper work-out today, huh?) the system can recapture electricity and how much power that system can cope with in one hit. Imagine trying to drink from a hosepipe: a dribble from the nozzle won’t be a problem, but fully open the tap and you’ll be overwhelmed (and very wet) very quickly. Make sense? Some EVs have info screens that show energy consumption as a graph against time. If the graph goes negative, that's regen. In give-and-take driving the negative area might be 10-20 per cent of the positive area, meaning about 10-20 per cent extra range than you'd get if the car just used its discs to slow up. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/what-regen-braking-and-it-actually-useful

Marcos Rojo, with chances of starting in Boca against Palmeiras The central defender feels better about his discomfort in his left calf and could start in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinal. Almirón will wait for you until the last moment. he optimism of the Boca coaching staff increased enormously in the last hours after landing at the San Pablo airport. The team's captain, Marcos Rojo, had been absent from the Superclásico against River due to discomfort in his left calf, although his fleeting recovery allows him to have a chance of playing as a starter in the rematch against Palmeiras, for the semifinal of the Copa Libertadores. . The footballer's entourage assures that he feels much better about the physical ailment in his left leg and that he wants to start on the synthetic grass at the Allianz Parque. The truth is that the centre-back, in addition to having become a key man in the defense despite his recent poor performances, is a big fan of the club and does not want to miss the most important game of the year. The final decision will be Jorge Almirón's, but Rojo's hunger and experience can be fundamental factors when making a decision for this type of duel. In principle, the squad will train this Wednesday, from 9 in the morning, at the Corinthians facility and the coaching staff will take the opportunity to closely monitor the defender's development. His traditional defense partner, Jorge Nicolás Figal, is also in trouble hours before playing the second leg due to a blow to one of his knees. Zorro practiced this Tuesday in Ezeiza in a different way, like the player from La Plata, and his presence in the starting lineup is unknown. Both will be required at 100 percent to determine if they will be there from the beginning, but the former Estudiantes is the one with the best chance of being in the starting lineup. https://www.tycsports.com/boca-juniors/marcos-rojo-recuperacion-boca-vs-palmeiras-copa-libertadores-id539252.html

The moment I knew: ‘She called my mother back to say she’d changed her mind’ When Steve Roberts called Barbro to invite himself to Sweden, he felt he had something to offer. She said no. But just after midnight, she reconsidered n 1973 I was living in a share house in London, finishing my postgraduate studies in chemistry and riding around on a sputtering Finnish motorbike. One summer evening I arrived home, covered in oil spatters, to find a beautiful Swede named Barbro sitting in our kitchen. She had turned up out of the blue, a friend of one of the girls in the flat who had hit a rough patch. From the outset I found her to be a very interesting person to talk to and her progressive Scandinavian approach to life made her much better company than many of the British girls I knew at the time. For those reasons, and considering it was her first time in England, Barbro seemed the perfect person to invite on a day-long mission to purchase a secondhand refrigerator from my uncle in Guildford. A few hours driving through the countryside confirmed my suspicions: this was a woman of rare character, someone I wanted to get to know better, even just as a friend. I was already engaged to be married, and both my fiance and I became fast friends with Barbro. After she returned to Sweden, we kept in touch and even visited her there together. A year later things had changed. My fiance had broken it off with me and taken up with another bloke who she was much better suited with (and is still married to). By October I was a newly single PhD graduate, had bought my own house and was waiting for a new job to start. I felt I had something to offer, and Barbro was on my mind. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/oct/01/the-moment-i-knew-she-called-my-mother-back-to-say-shed-changed-her-mind

A small boat carrying 280 migrants has landed in Spain's Canary Islands. The vessel arrived on the remote island of El Hierro, some 380km (238 miles) off Africa's western coast, on Tuesday. Rescue workers said those onboard were of sub-Saharan African origin and it was the largest number of migrants ever to arrive in the archipelago in one go. The crossing to the Canary Islands is one of the most commonly used and dangerous routes to Europe for migrants from Africa. "I've never seen a boat with so many people on board," journalist and former migration adviser Txema Santana said on social media after the vessel arrived. Since the start of the year, 140 people have died or disappeared trying to make the crossing, according to the International Organization for Migration. Use of the route has increased in recent years as tighter controls have been put in place to stop people crossing the Mediterranean from Africa's northern coast. Between 1 January and 30 September this year, a total of 14,976 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, an increase of 19.8% on the same period in 2022, according to figures from Spain's interior ministry. On Monday, Senegal's navy said it had intercepted four boats over three days with more than 600 people on board. In August, at least 60 people are believed to have died on a boat that was eventually found off Cape Verde, an African island nation that sits on the migration route to the Canaries. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67002541
