If your mouse is working but your cursor stops moving, then you may have software or hardware issues. It’s going to be more challenging to diagnose because you don’t immediately have a working mouse. Still, you should be able to quickly work through the troubleshooting steps and determine if you need a new mouse. Hi, I’m Aaron. I used computers in a time before mice, but am enamored with the ease of use such a simple device has brought to computing. In my opinion, a working mouse is a critical component of modern computing. Let’s dive into some of the reasons your mouse cursor may not work, when your mouse otherwise works. Table of Contents [show] Key Takeaways You should always start troubleshooting computer problems by restarting your computer. If that doesn’t fix the issue, then try reinstalling the mouse driver. You can also charge or change your mouse battery and/or change the USB port the mouse is plugged into. Cleaning the mouse sensors may solve your issue. If none of the above work, then something has failed and you will need to repair your mouse or replace it. Diagnosing Mouse Cursor Issues If you have an otherwise working mouse, but your mouse cursor is not working, you could have a software or a hardware issue. A mouse is just a set of buttons and sensors in a palm-sized package. Those sensors and buttons feed into a microcontroller that translates the signals to be sent via USB. The computer receives those signals and uses a software Driver to translate the signals into events that happen on the computer screen, like cursor movement when you move the mouse. Laser mice have a light sensor that looks for changes in either a laser or infrared LED. Those changes are translated into movement. Ball mice typically use two rotary encoders to detect up and down movement plus left and right movement when the ball is moved. Some combine the ball with a laser mouse receiver. With that background in mind, let’s start with software issues that could be plaguing your mouse. Before starting them, make sure your mouse is turned on if it has a switch. If it’s wireless, make sure your mouse dongle is plugged in. Once you’ve confirmed that, you should first… 1. Restart Your Computer This advice may seem cliche, but most computer problems are resolved by restarting your computer. Open programs may be causing conflicts, a process may have failed, your computer might be running low on resources, or other issues may be impacting your computing experience. Whatever the cause, restarting your computer terminates those programs and processes, resets them, and eliminates many different kinds of issues. If that helps, then you’ve likely solved your problem. If not, then you may have a… 2. Bad Driver Drivers are like any other software and can be plagued by similar problems, including unforeseen conflicts and corrupted installations. That may result in your mouse cursor not moving when you move the mouse. You can try reinstalling your mouse driver using Device Manager. This is going to be a lot easier if you have access to a second mouse. If not, I’ll also explain how you can use your keyboard to complete the steps. Step 1: Click Start or Press the Start button on your keyboard. Step 2: Type Control Panel and Click Control Panel or use the arrow keys to highlight it and press Enter. Step 3: Click Device Manager. Alternatively, use the arrow keys to highlight it and press Enter. Step 4: Click Mice and other pointing devices, click on your mouse, and then click the red uninstall button. Alternatively, you can press Tab on your keyboard to highlight the devices and use the arrow keys to navigate to your device. Once there, press Alt, use the arrow keys to highlight Action, press the down arrow, and navigate to Uninstall device and press Enter. Step 5: Click Scan for hardware changes. Reinstall the driver per the instructions that appear. On your Keyboard, repeat the steps outlined in Step 4 to access the action menu, go to Scan for hardware changes, and press Enter. If that doesn’t resolve your issue, then it might be… 3. Low Battery Wireless mice use batteries to power their internal components. If the device hasn’t been charged in a while, the battery voltage may be low enough for the mouse to cease functioning correctly. If that happens, charge or replace the batteries. If that doesn’t work or you have a wired mouse, then… 4. Change the USB Port If your mouse is working in every way except the cursor moving, the USB port is almost certainly not the issue. However, you can try changing the USB port the mouse or its receiver is plugged into. If that resolves your problem, great! If not then it could be… 5. Dirty Sensor If you’ve ruled out everything on the computer or between the mouse and the computer, then it’s the mouse. Your hardware issues may not be terminal for your mouse. You may just have dirty sensors. You can wet a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and scrub the light sensor gently. Alternatively, if you have a ball mouse, remove the ball and scrub the rotary encoders thoroughly. If that works, great! If not, then your problem may be a… 6. Terminal Hardware Issue If you can’t clean it, then the issue is likely with the sensor, the path from the sensor to the microcontroller, or the microcontroller itself. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can disassemble your mouse and try to diagnose and fix the issue. Alternatively, you can replace your mouse and will likely need to do so. Final Words Not having a working mouse can be so frustrating, especially since modern operating systems practically demand that as an interface. Sure, you can get by with just a keyboard, but it’s very difficult to do so. Getting your mouse cursor to work is critical to the modern computing experience. Have you had mouse issues similar to cursor movement issues? Let us know how you diagnosed them in the comments below!

Democrats wrestle with the Biden conundrum Analysis: Voters have concerns about President Joe Biden’s age. Biden’s team has been unwilling to answer those worries. Amid all of the news and issues on the top of political minds, there is one non-versation that continues to dominate: Can Joe Biden do this again? I call it a “non-versation” because the folks wringing their hands the most about whether Biden is up to the task of winning in 2024 are people who, in many cases, have already endorsed him for re-election. A few even work directly for him — and are still having the same uneasy feeling as they watch Donald Trump methodically consolidate Republican support while a right-wing information ecosystem turns the Biden brand into the Clinton brand circa 2016. Ultimately, Democrats in Washington — in both the executive and the legislative branches — share the same concern voters have been expressing for the last six months: They fear voters can’t be convinced Biden is up to the job, and they don’t have confidence the team around Biden fully appreciates the concern. The caveats before this non-versation are all very similar. “He’s really done a remarkable job, given the circumstances,” goes a common one. The handwringing after the various caveats are set aside all has the same sound to it, too, with answers hidden in questions like: “Do you think he looks too old?” Team Biden has tried to brush off the concern, pointing to the unpo[CENSORED]rity of the last two Democratic presidents at this same moment in their presidencies — before they went on to win re-election. At this time in 2011, Barack Obama was bruised by a protracted standoff with House Republicans over the debt ceiling and government spending levels. It was the low point of his re-election campaign. Bill Clinton’s first-term struggles and low point were a tad earlier, but in the spring of 1995, things were grim enough to spark talk of a Bill Bradley primary challenge. And then there’s the one Republican president Team Biden is fond of using for age-related comparisons: Ronald Reagan. Like Reagan, Biden battled a nasty inflation issue at the start of his term. Like Reagan, Biden was the oldest president ever elected. Reagan had a brief moment in 1984 when it appeared the age issue could become a problem, but he joked his way out of it and did enough campaigning to reassure the country he was up to it. Of course, given all we learned about Reagan’s health in his second term, perhaps there should have been more of a rigorous debate about his abilities, in hindsight. Still, all three examples — Obama, Clinton and Reagan — are reassuring historical points that offer potential Biden parallels. But one of the worst afflictions that can affect the political class and the Washington media class at times is “been there, done that disease.” Just because something happened a certain way the last time doesn’t mean things will turn out the same way this time. And yet, an overreliance on historical precedent can delude the normally intelligent mind. At the end of the day, it could turn out that negative feelings about Trump and anger at the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision on abortion are enough to secure Biden’s re-election. It’s probably the most likely formula, given what we are witnessing in just about every election held since the Dobbs decision. But while the power of the abortion issue might save Biden, it’s separate from the question of whether he owes the public a better picture of his ability to do the job. So far, Team Biden has decided not to accept the premise of the age question. It publicly chalks it up to the media, even going so far as to say the media should stop asking about it in polls. There’s a naive belief among some Biden partisans that if you don’t mention his age, it won’t be an issue. In the real world, concern about Biden’s age is an issue, and the voters are screaming it. Every reputable pollster who has asked has found more than 50% of registered Democrats want a primary campaign. The numbers stem from a simple fact: A number of Biden supporters were never enamored with him but saw him as the safest way to get rid of Trump. When you look at these numbers, it’s as if Democrats are ready to hand Biden a gold watch and thank him for beating Trump, making Congress slightly more functioning and expanding NATO — and call it a legacy. So what will it take to fire up Democrats for Biden? The best elixir for him could well be a primary challenge. The best way to disprove the age and ability issue is to run an active campaign, something Biden has yet to do. This advice may be easier to give than receive. For one thing, Team Biden will remind any skeptic like me that running a “Rose Garden”-style campaign from his Delaware home in 2020 worked, though there’s a counterclaim about whether he would have won by more — or had longer coattails — with a more robust campaign. Biden partisans also argue that his focus on democracy instead of inflation in the midterms was the right call, given his party’s overperformance against the GOP. Personally, I think history will remember the 2022 midterms more as the first evidence of the Dobbs fallout over abortion more than its being evidence of Trump’s unpo[CENSORED]rity in key swing states. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/democrats-wrestle-biden-conundrum-rcna119770

This surprising discovery turns everything we knew about turtles upside down. An unexpected observation about one of the rarest turtles on Earth reveals that cold-blooded reptiles may have more complex social bonds than we thought. Paddling a canoe down a murky Belizean river at dawn, Don McKnight and Jaren Serano heard the sound of the Central American river turtle, known locally as the hicatee. A hydrophone placed in the water detected the movements of the reptiles, which had sonic transmitters attached to their shells. The results surprised them: the turtles swam together through the river and, in some cases, they did not separate themselves even a meter from their peers. "It was like following a group of whales," says McKnight, an ecologist at LaTrobe University in Australia and the Turtle Ecology Laboratory in Belize. These social turtles could dramatically change how we think of supposedly solitary animals, he says. It was previously thought that turtles gathered together when searching for the same resource, such as a sunny rock, but they generally did not interact with each other. In the recent research, however, the turtles seemed to be looking for company. "It was very nice to see," says Serano, a master's student in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida (United States). What's more, the scientists' study, published this week in the journal Animal Behavior, may help conservationists protect this critically endangered species, which has declined throughout its range of Belize, Mexico and Guatemala. There are no solid po[CENSORED]tion estimates for this highly poached reptile, but its number could be as low as 10,000. Hicatees are often sold on the black market for their meat, considered a delicacy in Central America. "Belize remains the last bastion of the species, although if poaching continues for meat and eggs beyond domestic consumption, [it could become extinct] within the next 30 years," says Venetia S. Briggs-Gonzalez, an ecologist specializing in wildlife from the University of Florida that is not involved in the research. (Related: We thought we knew everything about turtles; until today) Random or social? McKnight and Serano were conducting other research on hicateos in the spring of 2020 when they discovered that the animals move in unison. "It's one of those random, silly ways that happens sometimes in science," McKnight says. To find out if the turtles were actually socializing, the team found a section of the river that did not have any of the known variables that could attract turtles, such as logs, rocks or vegetation. By placing sonic transmitters on the shells of 19 juveniles of both sexes, the team was also able to rule out mating behavior. The scientists then followed the tagged turtles daily from a canoe for a few months, going up and down the river and measuring groups of two or more turtles, which revealed the distances between individuals. It was not easy. One day, the couple came across a crocodile skirting the canoe. During a heavy downpour, they had to interrupt their work to bail water out of the boat. Once the data was obtained, McKnight, Serano and their colleagues ran simulations to determine whether the turtles' groupings and travel habits were random or evidenced sociality. The random model showed that the distances between the turtles were always greater than in nature. This means that real-life turtles did not move randomly, but rather flocked together on purpose, in groups of varying sizes. (Related: They discover a new species of turtle that is 205 million years old) An underappreciated social life "There are probably a lot more social behaviors than we've been able to document," says McKnight, who hopes his study will inspire more research on social reptiles, since these cold-blooded animals have been forgotten in favor of mammals and birds. "The results will surprise some, but not those of us who have studied the social behavior of turtles," says J. Sean Doody, associate professor of Conservation Biology at the University of South Florida (United States), in an email. . He adds that he has observed similar behavior in hognose turtles in tropical Australia, but has not yet documented it scientifically. Doody, who was not involved in the research, says it "dares to consider that turtles, ancient reptiles that predate humans by hundreds of millions of years, may have complex social lives outside of courtship and mating or fighting." . Briggs-Gonzales adds: "There is much more to social behavior in the animal kingdom than we can understand." (Related: This is Chonkosaurus, the most famous giant turtle on the internet) A boost for conservation? It's also unclear why turtles group together, although it may be to protect themselves from predatory crocodiles, McKnight says. And although crocodiles are less likely to attack a group of turtles, poachers prefer it. "The strategy they have developed for most predators, and which has worked very well, backfires when it comes to humans," says McKnight. "We've always heard reports of poachers catching dozens of turtles in one night, which we found very difficult to understand," McKnight says. According to Day Ligon, co-author of the study and professor of biology at Missouri State University (United States), this finding could also prompt the review of current laws in Belize, such as the prohibition of the use of gill nets, which can trap large groups of turtles at the same time. These efforts could prevent another tragic extinction, experts agree. "We don't want to lose this species like we lost others that are grouped together," says Doody, "for example the passenger pigeon, which became extinct more than 100 years ago." https://www.nationalgeographic.es/animales/2023/09/sorprendente-descubrimiento-pone-patas-arriba-conocimientos-tortugas

OVERVIEW WHAT IS IT? It’s the artist formerly known as the Vauxhall Corsa-e, now going by Vauxhall Corsa Electric. In case you hadn’t guessed yet, it’s the fully electric version of one of Britain's best-selling cars, and it's about as straightforward an electric car as you’re likely to get. Only, we need to talk about the looks, because the Corsa has recently been treated to a not-so-subtle facelift. Yep, it becomes the final model in Vauxhall’s passenger car range to adopt the brand’s new design language, most notably that 'Vizor' front end, and it looks all the better for it, we reckon. Additional exterior changes include the Corsa lettering spelled out across the rear bootlid, LED headlights, and redesigned alloy wheels, while the cabin has also undergone a (disappointingly) minor refresh – more on that below. Underneath it gets an additional bigger motor/battery pairing, as per the Peugeot e-208. GO ON THEN, WHAT ARE THE POWERTRAIN OPTIONS? Well, the previous 134bhp electric motor and 50kW battery pairing remains, but it’s been joined by a new 154bhp motor and 51kWh battery combo. The former offers a range of 222 miles, the latter 246 miles. This is where the Corsa Electric jumps starkly ahead of its more vivaciously designed rivals. Its range blitzes the Fiat 500, Mini Electric and Honda e, and there are lots of thoughtful touches to make sure this is an EV you buy to own, not to make a statement. Things like an 11kW on-board charger as standard, allowing for a full charge from empty in five hours and 15 minutes, or seven and a half hours using a 7kW home wallbox. A typical 10-80 per cent on a 100kW rapid charger takes 30 minutes. SO WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? There are surely few easier introductions to electric cars than this, primarily because it’s so similar to the ICE variant. Simply press the start button, pop it into D (or B, for extra regen) and you’re good to go. It really is as easy as that. It’s all very conventional to drive too, with its nicely weighted steering, smooth acceleration/braking, and generally pleasing road manners. Even if it does occasionally get slightly unsettled. Click through to the Driving tab for the full lowdown. The biggest letdown is arguably the cabin itself, which just doesn’t live up to the exterior’s makeover. OK, it gets a slightly redesigned steering wheel, a new toggle-style gear selector and suchlike, but overall it's still bland. https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/vauxhall/corsa-electric

Pizza, pie and spanakopita: three vegetarian Greek recipes to bake A trio of savoury meat-free recipes, where bright spring greens take centre stage Μπατζίνα Batzina (Zucchini pie) This is a delicious crustless savoury pie that originated in Thessaly, near central Greece. As it’s pastry free, it’s lovely and light. It is also very versatile: substitute the zucchini for everything from grated pumpkin or sweet potato to any cheese, or just use zucchini without the eggs and cheese. Enjoy it hot or cold, as a main or as part of a meze platter. Serves 6 4 zucchinis, grated 1 tsp salt 4 tbsp Greek‑style yoghurt 3 eggs 2 spring onions, chopped 20g chopped mint (1 cup) 60g chopped dill (1 cup) 30g chopped flat‑leaf parsley (1 cup) 90g plain flour 1 tbsp baking powder 200g Greek feta, crumbled 4 tsp extra‑virgin olive oil 100g breadcrumbs Place the grated zucchini in a colander, cover with salt and set aside to drain for two hours. Once drained, use your hands to squeeze out any remaining juice. Preheat the oven to 180C. Combine drained zucchini and all the remaining ingredients (except for the oil and breadcrumbs) in a bowl, stirring gently with a wooden spoon to create a thick batter. Season with salt and pepper. Grease a 30cm round cake tin with two teaspoons of olive oil and sprinkle two tablespoons of breadcrumbs over the base of the tin (this will help prevent sticking). Pour mixture into the tin and top with remaining breadcrumbs and olive oil. Bake for 40 minutes, or until golden. Σπανακόπιτα Spanakopita (Spinach and feta pie) Spanakopita is one of the most beloved dishes in Greek cooking and its origins date back more than 400 years. You will find this dish everywhere in Greece, from cafes and restaurants to bakeries and delis, but the region of Epirus in the north-west is where the most renowned iterations of spanakopita come from. The traditional way is to make your own phyllo pastry – this is a work of love, as it takes time and care but creates a texture and taste that store-bought phyllo just cannot replicate. However, you can definitely use store-bought pastry if you prefer. You will need to begin this recipe two hours ahead to prove the dough and prepare the filling. Serves 8 For the dough 1.6 kg special white flour, farina flour or 00 plain flour, plus extra for dusting 2 tbsp extra‑virgin olive oil, plus extra for greasing 750ml lukewarm water (3 cups) 1 tbsp sugar ¼ tsp vinegar ½ tsp salt 50g melted butter, for greasing For the filling 250g spinach, roughly chopped 250g silverbeet, roughly chopped 2 tbsp salt 10g mint, finely chopped (½ cup) 15g flat‑leaf parsley, finely chopped (½ cup) 30g dill, finely chopped (½ cup) 2 tbsp extra‑virgin olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 1 leek, finely chopped 1 bunch spring onions, finely chopped 250g Greek feta 2 eggs, beaten For the glaze 1 egg yolk 1 tsp cold water To make the dough, place the flour into a large bowl and make a well. Add the olive oil, water, sugar, vinegar and salt. Mix together using your hands or a wooden spoon. Turn out the dough on to a lightly floured surface and knead for about five minutes until the dough is soft and it bounces back when you press into it with your fingers. Place dough in a large oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for two hours. While the dough is proving, prepare your filling. Combine the spinach, silverbeet, salt and herbs in a bowl and set aside for two hours (the salt will draw out the liquid from the greens). Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over a low heat and fry the onion for two minutes. Add the leek and fry for a further five minutes. Add the spring onion and cook for a further two minutes. After the spinach mixture has rested for two hours, squeeze the mixture well and discard the juices (do not wash). Place in a bowl, add the feta and egg and stir to combine. Add the cooked onion and leek mixture, stir to combine, season with pepper and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180C and grease a 30cm square baking tray with melted butter. Turn out the dough again on to a lightly floured surface and knead for a further one to two minutes until the dough is smooth. Divide into eight equal‑sized balls of dough. Using a rolling pin, roll out each dough ball to the size of a small pizza. Place the dough into two piles of four doughs each, stacked on top of each other like pancakes. Roll each stack of dough out into the widest and longest rectangular shape that you can to cover the baking tray, plus some overhang. You will need to use your fingers to pull the edges of the phyllo dough gently to stretch out its size and be careful not to tear it. Place one layer of phyllo into the base of the baking tray. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/oct/11/pizza-pie-and-spanakopita-easy-simple-vegetarian-greek-recipes-to-bake

There is no evidence that the diploma Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted to the country's electoral commission was forged, the BBC's Global Disinformation Team has found. Allegations that President Tinubu's certificates were faked went viral on social media following the release by Chicago State University (CSU) of his academic records last week. We have looked at some of the most widely circulated claims. The release of the president's academic documents is the culmination of a judicial case filed in August by one of his main rivals in February's presidential election, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mr Abubakar was hoping to have the victor disqualified after accusing him of falsifying the CSU diploma of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration awarded in 1979 that he submitted to the electoral authority (Inec). To obtain evidence for his case in Nigeria, Mr Abubakar approached a US court in August, requesting it to compel CSU to release Mr Tinubu's academic records through a process called discovery, where the parties exchange information including documents ahead of a trial. Mr Tinubu's lawyers opposed the discovery application, citing privacy concerns, but the US court decided it should proceed. The documents requested by Mr Abubakar were: A copy of any diploma issued by CSU in 1979 A copy of the diploma CSU gave to Mr Tinubu in 1979 Copies of diplomas with the same font, seal, signatures, and wording awarded to other students that are similar to what CSU awarded to Mr Tinubu in 1979 Documents from CSU that were certified by Jamar Orr, who was then a staff member of CSU, in the 12 months from 1 August 2022 In response to request one, CSU submitted seven diplomas covering different disciplines with the names of the students redacted. According to the university's registrar, these diplomas had not been collected by the students. In response to request two, CSU stated that it could not find the diploma they issued to Mr Tinubu in 1979, because they do not keep copies of diplomas already collected by students. In response to request three, CSU stated that it produced for Mr Tinubu a replacement diploma dated 27 June 1979. It also released diplomas awarded to other students that bore similar font, seal, signatures and wordings as Mr Tinubu's diplomas. In response to request four, CSU submitted other academic documents initially attested to and released by Mr Orr. In line with the judge's ruling, Mr Abubakar's lawyer Angela Liu last week questioned Caleb Westberg, CSU's current registrar, in a deposition. The BBC was given access to the deposition transcript by Mr Abubakar's spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu. Some social media users in Nigeria allege that the deposition and the diplomas released by CSU confirm that the diploma submitted to Inec by Mr Tinubu was forged. This claim was also repeated by one of Mr Abubakar's lawyers, Kalu Kalu, at a press conference last week. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-67067854
