  3. Some Diablo 4 fans are unhappy with the current state of Blizzard's game, and have high expectations for the second season which arrives in just a few days. More than a decade after Diablo III, its sequel finally saw the light of day in June of this year on PC and consoles PS4, PS5, Xbox Series and Xbox One. It must be said that fans were particularly enthusiastic about the idea of returning to the infernal and merciless universe of this hack’n’slash from Blizzard. Proof of its immediate success, Diablo IV sold more than 10 million copies as of June, and grossed $666 million in just five days. At JV, it was rated 17/20, illustrating to what extent its staging, its deep characters, its atmosphere and its ease of access are the strength of this fourth opus. However, our test highlights the fact that this title is not revolutionary in the genre either, which is to be deplored coming from a sequel appearing more than 25 years after the debut of this cult license from Blizzard. Some players have said they feel like the North American company, behind many iconic franchises like World of Warcraft, is resting on its laurels after Diablo's early glory days. In this sense, it is not uncommon to currently see players stating that they expect a lot from Diablo 4 season two before knowing if they should stop investing in this title. Also read: 7 things to expect from BlizzCon 2023 including WoW Cataclysm and the next Diablo 4 expansion Blizzard releases a free video game straight out of WoW: Here's everything you need to know about Warcraft Rumble! A season 2 to raise the esteem of Diablo 4 players? A few months after the release of Diablo 4, a large number of players came to the conclusion: this title is disappointing. Although it is far from being catastrophic, with its neat universe and its great accessibility, some fans of this license are becoming more and more bored and are no longer able to experience pleasure while traveling through the infernal lands of this title. A very sad observation after such a long wait... Thus, it is not uncommon to read testimonials from players on the Internet, explaining their disappointment and their expectations with regard to Diablo 4. For example, this Internet user named OutrageousProfile388 has said he was waiting to see how good Season 2 was before making the decision to stop playing it. Blizzard has its work cut out for Season 2 I'm cautiously excited about the next season. However, if this season is a failure, I probably won't return until a month after the annual expansion releases. I'm pretty down on Blizzard, a company I once held in high regard. I don't think I'll send them money again until players tell me they really delivered great content. In short, the repetitive content of seasons, without any new general additions from Blizzard, seems to frustrate some players. As a reminder, season two is arriving in a few days, more precisely on October 17. What's more, it is likely that the North American company will make various announcements about this franchise during Blizzcon during the weekend of November 3, such as the following season and a first expansion. 9. Adata Legend 970 review: PCIe 5.0 speed and a fan-cooled heatsink This PCIe 5.0 SSD offers superlative performance and sports a hefty heatsink featuring its own fan! At a glance Pros Excellent PCIe 5 performance Massive heatsink with fan Good TBW rating and warranty Cons Pricey Our Verdict The Adata Legend 970 bumped the Crucial T700 off our top spot (barely) by virtue of superior real world performance. It’s also a hair cheaper. Adata’s Legend 970 is the company’s first PCIe 5.0 SSD and it’s an excellent overall performer — taking the top spot in our charts by a gnat’s eyebrow. It’s pricey of course, and requires a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, but it ships with an actual fan-cooled heatsink and was slightly less expensive than its performance rivals, the Crucial T700 and Seagate FireCuda 540 at the time of this writing. Further reading: See our roundup of the best SSDs to learn about competing products. What are the Adata Legend 970’s specs and price? Adata’s Legend 970 is a PCIe 5.0 x4 SSD that leverages a Phison PS5026 E26 controller, 1GB of DRAM per terabyte of storage, and 96-layer TLC NAND to provide top-tier everyday performance. It uses the standard 2280 (22mm wide, 80mm long) form factor, but also sports a massive heatsink to keep it cool. It’s not the only NVMe SSD out there sold with a gargantuan cooler, but as far as we know, it’s the only one with a fan. The Adata Legend 970 with the power connector for the cooler fan shown. As you can see above, the fan requires a separate power source, but the heatsink is so large you could likely pound on the SSD without the fan connected and still not experience thermal throttling. Given adequate cooling in your rig, that is. One One thing to consider when it comes to heatsinks in general, is the location and orientation of your M.2 slot. It may not accommodate one. Our testbed is a bit of an odd duck, but we have to remove heatsinks to test SSDs. It’s easy to remove the Legend 970’s heatsink (four tiny screws), but there’s little benefit to a heatsink if you don’t have the room, or already have one of your own. We didn’t spot the Legend 970 for sale without a heatsink, but that may be an option by the time your read this. Save a couple of bucks if you haven’t the need. Alas, as mentioned, at the time of this writing the Legend 970 was on the pricey side: $170 for 1TB and $300 for the 2TB flavor. That’s still slightly cheaper than the current 1TB Crucial T700 and Seagate FireCuda 540. But it’s also far pricier than good-performing host memory bus (HMB) SSDs such as the Lexar NM790. Note that DRAM speeds up random performance so HMB DRAM-less drives will not run your OS as quick as something like the Legend 970. That said, NVMe is so fast, you might not notice the difference. info
  10. Intel's Xeon Cascade Lake CPUs Have Reached the End of the Road Some of the last members of the Cascade Lake family 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable Processor (Image credit: Intel) Intel has announced the discontinuance of the company's 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable (Cascade Lake) processors. Cascade Lake is two generations behind Intel's existing 4th Generation Xeon Scalable Sapphire Rapids processors, so it's remarkable that the former survived this long. Cascade Lake has been around since 2019, which was the year when Intel released it to replace the long-lasting Skylake microarchitecture. Poor Cascade Lake has gone through a lot. Due to the constant pressure by AMD's 7nm EPYC Rome chips, Intel was forced to discontinue some of its Cascade Lake Xeon SKUs precipitately while lowering the pricing on the surviving models. Shortly after, Cascade Lake went through a refresh, introducing the Xeon Cascade Lake Refresh parts with a pricing reduction of up to 60% per core. For those of you who know Intel, the chipmaker doesn't have a habit of slashing prices on its processors, much less launching a refresh in such a short time. Cascade Lake's extreme feature segmentation contributed to the microarchitecture's downfall. For example, not all Cascade Lake chips supported the same amount of memory or Optane DC Persistent Memory DIMMs. On the other hand, AMD's EPYC Rome lineup offered consumers the same feature set across all its SKUs. Intel terminated Cascade Lake-X (HEDT) and Cascade Lake-W (workstation) processors in July of this year. As expected, the Xeon chips are the next parts to get the chopping block. The product discontinuation applies to both tray and boxed Cascade Lake Xeon processors. Intel listed 68 Cascade Lake products in its PCN (Product Change Notification) document. The chipmaker's customers have until April 26, 2024, to submit the last orders to their local Intel representative. Intel has committed to ship the last Cascade Lake Xeon orders out by October 23, 2026; therefore, Cascade Lake won't completely disappear from the shelves for at least another couple of years. In another PCN document, Intel highlighted that there is no change for Intel embedded customers. Thus, Cascade Lake-embedded processors are the last 22 living members of the Cascade Lake lineage. Embedded products have a longer life span than their socket counterparts, so it's unsurprising that the Cascade Lake embedded SKUs will be around for a bit longer. Finally, Intel has transferred its Cascade Lake embedded chips over to the Intel Embedded Architecture for continued support, effective after October 23, 2026. info

  12. The GOP armed its bazooka caucus. What could go wrong? Analysis: Republicans now use powerful procedural weapons — impeachment, removal of the speaker and election certification — to thwart majority rule and disrupt democratic institutions. It was inevitable that giving Rep. Matt Gaetz the procedural bazooka he demanded would end in the political annihilation of newly former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. For Gaetz — a 2020 election denier, a defender of the Jan. 6 insurrection and the subject of an ethics investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use and more — rules seem to matter most when they benefit him. The animating tenet of his political ideology — a strain of the broader conservative bent against taxation and spending — is that the federal government works against the public interest because it is corrupt. Chaos feeds his narrative. McCarthy's substantive sins were avoiding a national default and a federal shutdown, which interfered with Gaetz's ability to demonstrate that the government is broken. So Gaetz, R-Fla., used his procedural weapon — the "motion to vacate" — to do the next best thing: He aligned with Democrats to throw the House into a state of anarchy. For one day, at least, Gaetz and his seven followers ruled the 433-member House. "To do this on the floor is embarrassing and does not give the American public much confidence in Republicans being able to govern," former Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., said in a text message. "This small group just voted WITH the Democrats while ousting the speaker because the Democrats voted WITH the speaker and the majority of Republicans to keep the government open." It "reminds me a lot about the Abbott and Costello routine 'who's on first?'" Westmoreland said. Comedy and comity aside, the Gaetz phenomenon is indicative of a much larger trend within the Republican Party and within the House: the use of emergency measures — the heaviest available political artillery — to thwart majority rule, disrupt democratic institutions and oust political opponents. The most obvious example of the trend, of course, is the Gaetz-supported effort by then-President Donald Trump to stop his 2020 defeat from being certified. Most House Republicans — 139 of them — objected to the certification after the Capitol was stormed. So did eight Senate Republicans. Impeachment, once a power as solemn as it was seldom-used, has become en vogue. In the first 209 years of the republic, the House voted on whether to impeach a president — Andrew Johnson — once. In the last quarter of a century, the House has voted to impeach the president three times: Bill Clinton once and Trump twice. President Joe Biden currently faces an impeachment inquiry. None of that includes dead-end efforts by lawmakers to impeach President George W. Bush or less formal calls for the impeachment of President Barack Obama. House Republicans launched an impeachment investigation into Biden this year without seeking the approval of the full House — because there weren't enough votes to support it. There are other ways Congress can rebuke a president, including through censure. Even witnesses called by the House GOP to testify have said there is not currently evidence that Biden committed high crimes or misdemeanors. But the motion to vacate the speaker's chair may have undergone the most peculiar perversion of intent in terms of a small minority taking control. The power originates in President Thomas Jefferson's manual, which was adopted as the base House rulebook in 1837. With little other guidance, it allowed for a majority of representatives to vote to remove the speaker. But aside from the time Speaker Joe Cannon initiated and defeated a motion to remove himself — to show he still had power in the wake of a 1910 rebellion — it lay dormant. The rules around a vacancy in the speakership began to change after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist assault on the U.S. because lawmakers feared that another attack could leave the House inoperable in a time of crisis or even leave the position second in line to the presidency open. One new feature was the list of successors a speaker delivers to the clerk of the House — McCarthy named Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., the new interim speaker — in the event of a vacancy. Rather than seeing the vacancy rule as a necessary security measure, ultraconservative House Republicans began to view it as a tool for applying pressure to the speaker to bow to their demands. For a period of time, a motion to vacate the speakership required a majority of the House majority caucus. Then-Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., who would go on to become one of Trump's White House chiefs of staff and who is under indictment for his role in the effort to overturn the 2020 election, helped push then-Speaker John Boehner of Ohio from office in 2015 by threatening to vacate the chair. In a major concession to the Gaetz faction, McCarthy, R-Calif., had agreed at the beginning of this Congress to force a vote to vacate whenever a single member called for one. As the vote Tuesday demonstrated, the vast majority of Republicans wanted to keep McCarthy in power. And while it technically required a majority of the House, it's hard to imagine a time when the minority party would not gleefully stand with a rebel faction to oust the majority party's speaker. There are, after all, limits to a minority party's willingness to provide political aid to the majority. Many Republicans would now like to put the weapon away. But as the impeachment and motion-to-vacate examples show, it's hard to stop using a bazooka once it has been fired. This trend is obvious to both Democrats and Republicans. "Impeachment may have become the new censure," Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich., said. "And apparently MTV is the new way to re-litigate a speaker's election," he added, using the abbreviation for motion to vacate. Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., traced the roots back almost 30 years, to the time when Republicans took control of the House for the first time in four decades. "Since the moment Newt Gingrich ascended to the speakership three decades ago, we have seen one of the two major parties completely abandon any commitment to the norms," Boyle said. "After the 2010 Tea Party wave, that rejection of the norms accelerated. Then, from Trump on, the rejection has gone on steroids," he said. "Government shutdowns, debt default crises, rash impeachments, once-in-a-century multi-round speaker's votes and now [Tuesday], a historic first ever — all are part and parcel of this." Rep. Dan Goldman, of New York, who was the lead counsel in the Democratic-led impeachment of Trump over his withholding of funds for Ukraine, drew distinctions between the Trump impeachments and the GOP inquiry into Biden. The Trump cases were based on evidence of actions — such as Trump's phone call with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy and his efforts to stop the certification of electors — while there is no evidence to date of similar actions by Biden, Goldman said. "What we have now is an effort, fomented by Donald Trump, to get retribution against President Biden and to avenge his two impeachments," Goldman said, noting that McCarthy launched the inquiry without a vote of the full House after saying he would not do so. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/gop-armed-bazooka-caucus-go-wrong-rcna118654
  13. This is the first hybrid of dog and fox, a unique genetic rarity When first found, the animal was a mystery, as it displayed traits common to both dogs and foxes. In 2021, you will be invited to travel to another place and find a place to receive food. Here they are, the principio pensaron that has been in a perro, then they die in a cuenta de que su comportamiento parecía mas el de un zorro. Laser genetics confirms what's going on that Dogxim era un híbrido de ambientes. In 2021, a dog-like animal was taken to an animal rehabilitation center in southern Brazil after being hit by a car. Shortly after, veterinarians observed unusual behavior. The animal looked and barked like a dog (although it featured long, pointed, fox-like ears), but it also climbed bushes, a behavior more typical of the local Pampas fox, and refused common dog food, preferring to eat rats. The keepers began to wonder if it might not be a hybrid, a mix of a domestic dog and some wild canid from the area, so they contacted Thales geneticist Renato Ochotorena de Freitas and Rafael Kretschmer, from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, who last month published a study confirming that the animal was the first documented dog-fox in the world. The discovery excited and intrigued animal genetics experts. "What a strange hybrid beast!" wrote Roland Kays, a biologist at North Carolina State University and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (United States), on X (formerly Twitter), along with a photo of the creature and a link to the study. He added that, although hybridization between species is well known among more related animals, such as dogs and wolves, the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) and the Pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocerus) belong to "two genera separated by 6.7 million of years". "This would be expected to be seen in trees, but not in vertebrates," says Loren Reiseberg, a geneticist at the University of British Columbia (Canada). "It's as if humans produced a viable hybrid with chimpanzees!" Some animal hybrids are well known, such as the mule (a mix of a mare and a donkey), the hinny (a mix of a donkey and a horse) or the liger, a mix of a lion and a tiger, but the case of Brazil was somewhat different. The creature, a female, was named "Dogxim," a cross between "dog" and graxaim do campo, the Portuguese name for the Pampas fox. And although it is the first, it may not be the last of its kind. Environmental changes could lead to more dog-fox hybrids in the future, a possibility that could have problematic consequences. (Related: Thrushes, ligers, grolar bears and other oddities: How are animal hybrids produced?) Discovering a hybrid The first step to confirm the possibility that Dogxim was a hybrid was to determine the number of chromosomes in its cells. It had 76 in total, a clue that scientists could use to determine its species, since the same species usually has a fixed number of chromosomes. The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the only canid in the region with 76 chromosomes, but its appearance and behavior ruled it out as a possible progenitor. Scientists then reasoned that since a domestic dog has 39 chromosomes and a Pampas fox has 37, the resulting 76 chromosomes found in Dogxim could indicate "the first evidence of hybridization," Kretschmer says. Geneticists next examined Dogxim's mitochondrial DNA (chromosomes inherited exclusively from his mother) and determined that they came from a Pampas fox. They then examined the nuclear DNA, which contains chromosomal information from both parents, and found a mix of dog and Pampas fox. The genetic tests were carried out over six months, during which Dogxim healed from her injuries from the accident and was transferred to an animal reserve. Although foxes belong to the same biological family as wolves and dogs (Canidae), they do not belong to the same smaller group, the genus Canis. Instead, more than six million years ago, foxes diverged and became sufficiently differentiated to be considered the genus Vulpes or, in the case of the Pampas fox native to South America, the genus Lycalopex. "In general, in mammals, species reproduce with their own species," explains Kays. "Sometimes, if they have not been separated for such a long evolutionary period, it can happen that different species reproduce. We occasionally see this with coyotes and wolves, but it usually happens when one of the animals is very common in a region and the other is very rare". Pampas foxes are not rare, but are widespread throughout their range in South America. How has this unprecedented hybridization occurred and what implications does it have for the possible fox-dogs of the future? (Related: The challenge of saving the rarest wolf in the world) Dogxim died in March of this year and the cause of his death is unknown. In general, animal hybrids of this type can present genetic anomalies that endanger their survival. How a fox met a dog According to Kretschmer, it is likely that environmental disturbances contributed to the creation of Dogxim. The grassy plains of southern Brazil where Fampas foxes live are suffering from widespread habitat loss and development. Much of it is being converted to cattle pasture and human residences. Although pampas fox po[CENSORED]tions have remained stable, their habitat increasingly overlaps with that of domestic dogs, giving both more opportunities to mate. Another factor, according to Bruna Szunwelski, co-author of Kretschmer's study, could be abandoned dogs. "The practice of abandoning dogs is a crime in Brazil, but it still happens frequently," she says. "Pets and hunting dogs are often abandoned in natural areas by their owners, contributing to the increased presence of dogs in natural habitats, including protected areas." Although a hybrid between species is usually an anomaly, with little chance of reproducing and giving rise to a new po[CENSORED]tion, it is increasingly difficult to predict how species may evolve as they are forced to adapt more quickly to the effects of climate change. and other environmental disturbances. "The data suggest that hybridization has been much more common during the evolution of plants and animals than previously suspected, even among deeply divergent lineages," says Reiseberg. Kay, however, thinks it unlikely that we will see more dog-foxes, partly because only one example has been found in all the years that dogs and foxes have lived in proximity, and because it is genetically risky. "There are more likely to be genes that don't work together" in a completely new creature like Dogxim, she says, than in a species that has evolved over millions of years through gradual mutations that have proven advantageous to its survival. Creatures created through hybridization often have health problems or other characteristics that make them less likely to survive. Dogxim's black fur, for example, contrasts with the typically paler tones of a Pampas fox, which are better camouflaged in the grasslands of its habitat. Although he was reported to be healthy when he was transferred to the Mantenedouro São Braz state animal center in November 2021, Dogxim died in March 2023. The cause of his death is still unknown. Kretchmer and others did not learn of his death until August, when they called to request photos before the publication of their study. According to a statement from SEMA, Brazil's Ministry of Environment and Infrastructure, the animal's death is being investigated by the State. (Related: Was hybridization with Homo sapiens that caused the extinction of the Neanderthals?) Dogxim's legacy Regardless of whether Dogxim's existence was coincidental, its discovery raises important questions. "Hybridization between species with different evolutionary trajectories can be a serious threat to the conservation of wild fauna," explain Kretcschmer and other authors in their study. Although pampas foxes are not currently threatened in their native range, that could change. And hybrids like Dogxim could impact the native fox po[CENSORED]tion, potentially introducing new diseases and genetic weaknesses, hampering their prospects for survival. The complexities and mysteries surrounding the discovery of Dogxim deserve further exploration, Kretschmer and his colleagues note in their article: studying the "consequences of hybridization on the genetics, ecology and behavior of wild po[CENSORED]tions will be essential to improve the conservation of this species." species". https://www.nationalgeographic.es/animales/2023/09/primer-hibrido-perro-zorro-rareza-genetica-unica-doxim-brasil
  14. Finding the best performance car of 2023: Top Gear's Speed Week is here Everything you need to know about Top Gear magazine's annual festival of fast… including how we went green(er) in 2023 Speed Week is Top Gear magazine's annual performance car of the year test. A gathering of the greatest fast cars launched within the last 12 months, brought together in one place (this year it’s the Gotlandring track in Sweden, but it could be anywhere in the world) for a week of road and track testing, photography and video production and very little sleep. The goal is to separate the great from the merely good and, eventually, pick an overall winner. Whereas other publications might be laser focused on lap times and performance figures, our judging process is more… organic. We’re looking for all-round ability of course, hence the road and track elements, but the criteria is simple – the winner is the one that brings us the most joy, which is what allows a £300k supercar to compete on a level playing field with a £30k hot hatch. This year we posed ourselves an additional question: “Could we make Speed Week a low-carbon event, without compromising on the, y’know, speed?” What followed was a crash course - from a team within the BBC that knows about these things - in sustainability, or more specifically how to avoid the many and varied pitfalls of claiming to be green, when you're anything but. You see, finding high-quality carbon offsets can be a bit of a minefield and simply getting the event rubber stamped by a third party isn’t the way to go. Far better to scrutinise our own plans, to take a long hard look at the event and make efforts to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible, within the real-world constraints of time, budget and technology. We purchased CO2 offsets from the airline for 16 return flights from London to Visby… before learning that in line with strict carbon accounting these weren’t submissible, so the flights couldn’t be deducted from our tCO2e (a unit that takes into account all greenhouse gases emitted and their global warming potential, and puts it into one easy unit) total. Damn. We sent 12 of the 15 contenders to Sweden on a pair of Scania transporter trucks capable of running on HVO (Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil). We ran all the combustion engine cars on Sustain Classic Super 80 biofuel, supplied to us by Coryton. All the energy used to charge the EV contenders came from entirely renewable sources, specifically the energy produced on-site at the Gotland Ring by seven wind turbines. In the spirit of using locally-sourced ingredients we procured electric CAKE bikes and plug-in Volvos as our photography support vehicles… and self-catered, with mixed results. You can pore over the calculations in full in the latest issue of the magazine, but the take-home was this: it’s not an exact science, many lessons were learned for how to reduce our footprint in the future, but we proved it’s possible to still enjoy the cars we all love, while treading a little lighter on our planet. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/speed-week-2023/finding-best-performance-car-2023-top-gears-speed-week-here
  15. Tata Martino's crude statement: "Our playoff chances are disappearing" The Inter Miami coach was honest after losing by a landslide against Chicago Fire. In addition, he told how Lionel Messi is, who did not play last night. nter Miami fell 4-1 against Chicago Fire, on Matchday 36 of Major League Soccer (MLS). With this result, those led by Gerardo Martino begin to say goodbye to the dream of qualifying for the playoffs and this is also seen by Tata, who in a press conference assured that "the chances are disappearing" and that the team missed Lionel Messi. Tata Martino's crude statement after the defeat suffered by Inter Miami "The chances in which the situation depended on us ended tonight. Now the chances minimally exist, but we no longer depend totally on us," Martino said at the postgame press conference at Soldier Field. Las Garzas have three games left to play and are five points behind New York FC, the last one with the possibility of entering the playoffs through the playoffs. "I leave with the sadness that our chances are disappearing. We no longer depend on ourselves. There may be opportunities if other results help us. But today the problem does not lie in what the rivals do, it is also that we have to win three games and It is the moment in which we have the worst performance of the team," he added. Tata Martino referred to how Lionel Messi is and when he could play again Messi did not travel to Chicago while waiting to complete his recovery process due to a muscle problem suffered on September 20. They had already been out in the final of the US Open Cup, lost against the Houston Dynamo, and with this fall Inter Miami dropped to the penultimate place in the East of the MLS, with 33 points, five from the playoff spots and three days left to go. "Messi is closer to playing again. As we said, we will evaluate tomorrow and Friday to see if he is fit," Martino said. And he added: "The most important thing is that he is leaving the injury behind, little by little he is finding his best form, he has been training very well with the medical department. Then we will see what is most convenient." Despite everything, when reflecting on this season, Martino considered that the club's growth has been notable: "I always thought that these six months were going to be a matter of shaping the team, of getting to know the club to have an excellent 2024. We were able win a title, we lost a final and now we still have options to enter the playoffs, something that three months ago was impossible to think about," he concluded. https://www.tycsports.com/estados-unidos/mls/tata-martino-y-una-cruda-afirmacion-tras-caer-por-goleada-ante-chicago-fire-id539475.html
  16. Jardin du Luxembourg. Photograph: Katerina Knyazeva/Shutterstock Paris holidays Where best to enjoy autumn in Paris Forget Paris in the spring … autumn is the best time of year to enjoy the city’s parks, gardens and forests. A local garden expert picks her favourites in the fall Amy Kupec-Larue Thu 5 Oct 2023 07.00 BST Jardin du Luxembourg Coming from New England, which is famous for its fall colours, I was disillusioned by the sheer multitude of brown, crumpled horse-chestnut leaves on display in Paris in autumn. So I began my quest for hints of gold, amber, russet and scarlet and have been richly rewarded. The majority of gardens in Paris have two planting periods; the Luxembourg garden in the sixth arrondissement has three, giving it year-round interest. The cascading urns and autumn chrysanthemum displays would certainly have pleased Marie de’ Medici, who created this garden in the early 17th century. While its proportions have changed over the years, it remains a fabulous oasis in the centre of town. More than 600 espaliered fruit trees grow in the southern corner, next to the oldest beekeeping school in Paris. Two of my favourite spots to read or have a picnic are next to the ornate Medici fountain, or on a bench along the shaded, curving pathways which skirt the garden. I also love the golden ginkgo tree which illuminates the Boulevard Saint-Michel. There are many good reasons to venture north to the Batignolles district: the hip cafes and restaurants around Place du Dr Félix Lobligeois, the farmers’ market and the charming Square des Batignolles, where locals gather to play pétanque and feed the ducks. But the 17th arrondissement holds another surprise – the newly completed Martin Luther King park and the Paris Courthouse by Renzo Piano. Begun in 2004, this landmark composition was created on the site of a sprawling freight station. Its 10.8 hectares (27 acres) harmoniously incorporate the four seasons with water features and various sporting facilities. As the Japanese cherries don their fall colours, the extensive planting of billowy grasses and flaming ash and oak trees comes alive, alongside two community gardens and a large orchard. The graceful Albert Kahn garden in the western suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt once served as a backdrop for the promotion of world peace. Kahn’s childhood experience of war made him a fervent pacifist. The banker and philanthropist believed that the underlying cause of war was a lack of mutual understanding and appreciation of other cultures. He built up a vast photographic and cinematographic collection, the Archives de la Planète, which is now on display in the museum. In his landscaped garden, he realised his vision of global harmony with beautiful displays of plants from different countries planted alongside each other. Today narrow paths wind through forests, wildflower meadows, past a conservatory and through two Japanese gardens with traditional and contemporary features. The sculptural layering and transparency pruning of the maple and cherry trees may even transport you to Kyoto. I strongly encourage any visitor to walk the garden twice – without a map the first time, just observing and enjoying. Every second Tuesday of the month the gardens are illuminated and stay open until 10pm. 14 rue du Port, 92100. From October to March, the museum and garden are open from Tuesdays to Sundays 11am-6pm, €8 adult, free for under-26s. On the first Sunday of each month, entry is free. https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2023/oct/05/autumn-in-paris-parks-gardens-cemetaries
  17. The US has sent roughly 1.1 million bullets seized from Iran last year to Ukraine, its military has said. The US Central Command (Centcom), which oversees operations in the Middle East, says the rounds were confiscated from a ship bound for Yemen in December. Ukraine's Western allies recently warned that their production lines were struggling to keep up with the rate at which Ukraine was using ammunition. Centcom says the Iranian rounds were transferred to Ukraine on Monday. It added the ammunition was 7.62mm calibre used in Soviet-era rifles and light machine-guns. While the number is significant, it represents a small percentage of the hundreds of millions of rounds already shipped by allies to Ukraine. The US has already provided more than 200 million bullets and grenades. The Iranian munitions were originally seized by US naval forces from a stateless ship named MARWAN 1 on 9 December, it said. The US government gained ownership of them in July through a process known as civil forfeiture, by which an asset can be seized if its owner is thought to be involved in criminal activity. In this case, the claim was brought against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of the Iranian armed forces tasked with preserving the country's government. In a statement, Centcom said the US was "committed to working with our allies and partners to counter the flow of Iranian lethal aid in the region by all lawful means". Iran backs the Houthi rebels in Yemen's ongoing civil war, but arms transfers to the group are barred under a 2015 resolution by the UN Security Council. The civil war in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis took control of the capital Sanaa and removed the country's government. The ousted government remains the internationally recognised authority in Yemen and is backed by a Saudi-led coalition of countries in the region as well as the US and the UK. Since the second half of last year, Iran has also repeatedly been accused of supplying Russia with arms, most notably drones, for use in the war in Ukraine. Ukraine's allies say they are short of ammunition The global consequences of the crisis in Congress What tanks and other equipment are countries giving Ukraine He added that governments and arms manufacturers needed to "ramp up production in a much higher tempo". Oleksandr Vasiuk, a Ukrainian MP who co-chairs a committee on cooperation with the US, said the transfer "proves once again that the US is our strong ally". "These seized weapons and ammunition could have been simply disposed of, but Washington understands how important it is for us to get help," he said. The transfer to Ukraine comes amid rising concern among Western allies over their continued ability to arm Kyiv On Monday at the Warsaw Security Forum, Adm Rob Bauer, the chairman of Nato's military committee, said that the "bottom of the barrel is now visible". He said decades of underinvestment meant that, even at the start of the war, Nato countries' ammunition stocks had been half-full or even emptier. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67014218
