Designing buildings with solar cleverly incorporated into the design has just become easier, thanks to software developed at RMIT University. Building-integrated photovoltaics, or BIPV, are building features such as roof tiles, cladding and windows that double as solar panels. Depending on the dwelling, BIPVs can cover a greater area of a building, generating solar energy from different angles. They also look smart and can be customized. Despite the potential of BIPVs, conventional roof-mounted panels continue to account for the lion's share of new installations in Australia due to the extra complexity in predicting performance and sourcing BIPV technology. Now a team at RMIT has created software to help architects and engineers incorporate, source and cost BIPV in a building's conceptual design phase. The software is the first of its kind to be designed using Australian data. Project lead Associate Professor Rebecca Yang from RMIT's Solar Energy Application Group said she hoped the tool, called BIPV Enabler, would help make buildings greener. "This is the perfect solution for building designers and developers looking to select the right solar option to suit their design," said Yang, who is the director of the Australian PV Institute and driving the BIPV Alliance. It turns out good guys can rescue Baldur's Gate 3's evil playthrough companion mod-free by turning her into a sheep and making the sheep stand trial Drow Paladin Minthara seems like a cool character, even if she placed dead last in PC Gamer's Baldur's gate 3 companion ranking. To recruit her, you have to betray most of act one's questgivers and friendly NPCs to help a bunch of stinky goblins instead, and this route also sees you waving goodbye to companions Karlach, Wyll, Halsin, and possibly Gale. There's already mods for recruiting Minthara without being heinous, but a Taiwanese gamer with the handle pao870111 figured out a way to do so in vanilla Baldur's Gate 3, subsequently shared in English to Reddit by ZookeepergameDeep360. Fair warning: it's a jank juggling act of epic proportions, and very much not what Larian intended. You start by attacking Minthara first in the Kill the Goblin Leaders quest for Halsin, which makes her only "Temporarily Hostile" in Baldur's Gate 3's game logic. Using nonlethal attacks to knock her unconscious isn't really recognized by the story, but it does mean that Minthara will show up at her old spot in the goblin camp after your next long rest and remain there indefinitely (though you can't talk to her). After finishing the Goblin Leaders quest in this way, it looks like you can progress through act one and into act two as normal, being sure to unlock the Moonrise Towers waypoint. Here's where it gets weird: you then return to Minthara at the goblin camp, use the Polymorph spell to turn her into a sheep, and then the Dominate Animal spell to temporarily add her to your party. Taking control of Sheepthara, you then have to teleport straight to the Moonrise Towers waypoint. What follows seems to be the most arduous part of the whole ordeal: Minthara has to reach Ketheric Thorm's throne room to trigger her normal trial scene from an evil playthrough, overriding the one with the goblins you get on a good playthrough. However, in her normal Drow form, Minthara will be hostile to Moonrise's guards and temporarily aggro'd on you whenever exiting sheep mode—she has a high likelihood of running off into the Shadow Cursed lands to instantly die during this long walk to hell. To ensure she reaches her date with destiny (and possibly you, if you pursue her romance subplot), you have to keep re-upping the Polymorph/Dominate Animal combo and carry her across the bridge and into the throne room by using a high-strength character to pick her up as an "improvised weapon," walk as far as they can, and then set her down gently, being careful to disengage from her when she turns back into a Drow and ensuring that she's not in immediate danger from Moonrise's guards. Once you convey Minthara to the throne room in sheep form, she'll be judged and sentenced to death by Ketheric just like when she survives in a playthrough where you attack the Grove with her, only she'll remain a sheep for the duration of the cutscene. Truly a high-flying trapeze act of RPG wonkiness, all to completely bork one of Baldur's Gate 3's main branching choices and save both Minthara and the Tiefling Refugees. ANIMALS What is 'kelping' and why are whales putting seaweed on their heads? A new study sheds light on the fascinating behavior of whales. But is it a form of play or the marine equivalent of a skincare routine? A humpback whale swims with her calf off the coast of Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. Humpback whales are among the whale species known to engage in kelping, or playing with seaweed they find floating in the ocean. Humpback whales are well known for their fascinating culture: these enigmatic animals migrate thousands of kilometers each year, sing enchanting songs, leap out of the water in a huge gap, and collaborate while hunting, creating webs of bubbles that trap their prey. Now, researchers have shed light on another aspect of whale behavior: playing with seaweed they find floating in the ocean, moving it between their fins, rolling with it and, most intriguingly, carrying it on their heads like a hat. This behavior, baptized in English as kelping (which could be translated as alguear), has been described in a new study as a "global phenomenon." The study documents cases of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) around the world interacting with seaweed, based on more than 100 social media posts, and shows that this playful behavior is much more common than previously thought. There's no doubt that seaweed looks like fun. But could it have another purpose? Olaf Meynecke, a researcher at Griffith University (Australia) and co-author of the study, believes so, especially considering that whales can spend between 30 and 40 minutes with this behavior. "That's a long time to spend with a little piece of seaweed," he says. "It seemed like there had to be something more." Meynecke believes that the way they can move the algae smoothly and precisely with all parts of their body could indicate mobility training: whales need dexterity and coordination to feed. Kelping was first observed in 2007, and it's not just humpback whales that do it. Other baleen species have also been observed interacting with seaweed such as gray whales and northern and southern right whales. After watching videos of seaweed and reading a 2012 study on the phenomenon, Meynecke became intrigued. After watching three unrelated drone videos of kelping algae, he wondered how much more there was behind those images. To gather more data on this strange behavior, he searched social media for keywords like "kelping," "humpback whale," "whale," and "algae," and found hundreds of posts, which the team thoroughly analyzed. Meynecke says it became clear that this behavior is not accidental: "Having something touch your body in the water is quite difficult because it doesn't really want to stick, it floats away," he says. ‘I slept in ditches and dreamed of marauding raiders’: a wild walk on the Hadrian’s Wall path The vandalism at Sycamore Gap may have hogged the headlines, but walking the length of the national trail puts these borderlands into thrilling historical context adrian’s Wall has perhaps the most single-minded personality of all the National Trails, tracing as it does the 84 miles from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, which represented the north-west frontier of the Roman empire for nearly 300 years. It was built by the Roman army (the soldiers dug the ditches, quarried the stones and laid them) on the orders of the emperor Hadrian after his visit to Britain in AD 122. The Hadrian’s Wall path celebrates its 20th birthday this year. I’ve now walked all 17 National Trails, including the Coast to Coast path and King Charles III England coast path (officially opening in 2024 and 2025 respectively). I’m not sure why it took me so long to get round to walking the Hadrian’s Wall trail; perhaps it was a perception that it was too busy or that there was too much road walking. All my concerns proved unfounded. I undertook the walk in the same style as my 6,800-mile walk around the coast of Britain, The Perimeter: carrying 15kg of camera and camping gear, primarily wild camping (pitching late, leaving early and staying out of sight) with a few nights in a hostel or B&B to clean and charge up. Throughout the route, there’s such a wealth of archaeological remains that it’s impossible to ignore the Roman influence, even away from the central section where the wall is most impressive and intact. The trail starts in the expansive landscape by the Solway Firth near Anthorn Radio Station, a matrix of antennae and cables that crisscross the sky like a line drawing, used to communicate with submerged submarines and to transmit the UK’s time reference signal. It seems this landscape is destined to be marked by structures of control. At Bowness-on-Solway, the system of ditches and wall met coastal forts that stretched along the Cumbrian coast and prevented the wall from being outflanked by sea. Although the Ordnance Survey map evocatively states “Hadrian’s Wall (Course of)” and “Vallum (Course of)”, I found it hard to make out anything on the ground. At this point, the Scottish border is only a few miles away; it’s historically an ambiguous and lawless land – home of the Reivers, the band of raiders who marauded along the frontier from the 13th to 17th centuries, conceivably set in motion by the Romans. As a result, many farmhouses here are fortified – more castle than home. After leaving the expanse of sea and sky, the path follows the River Eden to Carlisle past the imposing Norman keep. The first castle was built in around 1100 on the site of a wooden Roman fort built 1,000 years earlier. As a border stronghold between two kingdoms, the castle has been besieged 10 times – more than any other place in Britain. This shows in its ruthless, architecture with a definite “Come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough” vibe where barely a stone has been placed for any purpose but to kill or defend. As the trail starts climbing on to higher ground, 23 miles along at Old Wall, the earthworks of the wall are very clear, and there’s a panoramic view back to Blencathra and Skiddaw on the Lake District fells. I’d become so fixated on the wall, I was momentarily surprised and delighted to be reminded of somewhere else. Despite the ditch being evident, there’s still no visible wall as the stones were “borrowed” to build Lanercost Priory and other nearby buildings over the following centuries. A few hours later, with views across to the northern extent of the Pennines, I pitch my tent. Hiding behind the trunk of a wind-blown tree, I imagine myself avoiding reivers and legionaries that once roamed these lands. Approaching Birdoswald, the foundations of the wall become thrillingly intact. A soon-to-be familiar pattern also becomes evident here: the remains of a milecastle with two turrets in between. Fourteen large forts like the one at Birdoswald were also distributed along the length of the wall, all with their granaries, hospitals, barracks, headquarters and commandants’ houses. The wall was as much a linear city as barrier. Walking past Gilsland, where the trail leaves Cumbria and enters Northumberland, the wall is now more than a metre tall with perfectly cut facing stones as it emerges on the north-facing scarp of the Whin Sill. These are the images of the imagination, where a sinuous wall winds through a rugged moorland landscape. It feels inconceivable that these stones could have survived up here for 1,900 years.
