The team at Z80 Kits has unveiled a new VGA breakout kit that uses our favorite microcontroller, the Raspberry Pi Pico. According to the details provided by Z80 Kits, the RC2014 Pi Pico VGA Terminal is a custom PCB designed to provide VGA output for any RC2014 model board. The Pico is used to generate VGA output which should work with most standard VGA monitors. In addition to the VGA support, it also accepts keyboard input via USB. Many USB keyboards will work with the Pi Pico VGA Terminal, but the Z80 Kit team reported compatibility issues with some—your mileage may vary. The Pi Pico VGA Terminal is designed to operate using Port A or Port B on boards using the enhanced bus. The Pico is programmed to convert the RC2014 serial out to the VGA port, and to convert USB keyboard input to serial. The firmware update process is straightforward as it’s mostly a drag and drop process. The Pi Pico VGA Terminal needs to be loaded on a PC in bootloader mode. Moto E30 has been launched as the latest budget phone from Motorola. The new handset is quite similar to the Moto E40 that the Lenovo-owned company launched in markets including India and Europe last month. This means that you are getting a hole-punch display design, triple rear cameras, and a massive 5,000mAh battery. However, on the distinction front, Moto E30 is based on Google's streamlined Android Go platform, whereas Moto E40 offers a full-fledged Android experience. Moto E30 price, availability Moto E30 price has been set at COP 529,900 (roughly Rs. 10,200) for the lone 2GB + 32GB storage variant. The phone is available for purchase in some South American regions including Colombia and Slovakia in Blue and Urban Grey colour options. Details about the global availability of Moto E30 are yet to be revealed. Last month, Moto E40 was launched at Rs. 9,499 for the 4GB + 64GB storage model. The K-series SKUs, such as the Core i9-12900K and Core i5-12600K lead Intel's 12th Generation Alder Lake army to the battle. Although the non-K series are slated for a later release, Canadian retailer DirectDial (courtesy of momomo_us) has given us a first look at the pricing for the more budget-friendly chips. The Core i7-12700F is the 65W variant of the Core i7-12700K. From the model name alone, we can confirm that the Core i7-12700F comes with a locked multiplier and withou integrated graphics. Due to the strict TDP limit, the Core i7-12700F runs with lower clock speeds as opposed to the Core i7-12700K. The fine details are unknown at this point, but the rumor is that the Core i7-12700F could have a 4.8 GHz P-core boost clock, only 100 MHz less than the K counterpart. DirectDial listed the Core i7-12700F with a $365 price tag so it'll be a strong competitor for AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X that now retails for $386.66. For reference, the Core i7-12700K is faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X so it'll be interesting to see if the Core i7-12700F can still maintain the lead with a lower TDP. Alder Lake Non-K Series Specifications and Pricing* The Core i5-12400F and Core i5-12400 may debut under the $250 mark. The Canadian store had the two chips up for $200 and $230, respectively. Regardless of the model, the 65W Alder Lake processor reportedly wields six Golden Cove cores and will not employ any Gracemont cores. Gamers who plan to pair the hexa-core chip with a discrete graphics card will probably pick the Core i5-12400F and potentially save up to $30, which appears to be the value for the integrated graphics. Early Core i5-12400F benchmarks have revealed that the Alder Lake processor trades blows with the Ryzen 5 5600X, which currently sells for $309. We'll need to see more benchmarks to declare a winner. If DirectDial's pricing is accurate, the Core i5-12400F may be the Ryzen 5 5600X killer after all. For this generation, AMD hasn't launched any quad-core Ryzen 5000 processors, leaving the Core i3-12100F in a strange place. The Ryzen 3 5300G could be a rival for the Core i3-12100F, but the Zen 3 APU is exclusive to OEMs. Furthermore, the Ryzen 3 5300G comes with integrated Vega graphics, making it more comparable to the Core i3-12300 or Core i3-12100. Being an OEM chip, you'll only find the Ryzen 3 5300G inside prebuilt PCs or on e-commerce platforms, such as eBay. During the Alder Lake announcement, Intel stated that the chip´maker has started shipping up to 28 different Alder Lake SKUs to its OEM partners. These Alder Lake-powered systems are scheduled to come out in early 2022, lending some credence to the rumors that Alder Lake non-K parts might debut in January.

iPhone 13 screen replacement through a third-party repair shop would completely disable the Face ID functionality, a new investigation by iFixit reveals. This is said to be a deliberate move by Apple in an attempt to stop iPhone users from going for third-party repairs. By bringing in this barrier of screen replacement, iFixit says that Apple could shatter the iPhone repair industry completely, calling it a ‘dark day for fixers, both DIY and professional'. Third-party iPhone repair has become difficult because of a small microcontroller chip that pairs the screen to the phone. This chip is tucked into the bottom of the screen. iFixit has detailed how the new iPhone 13 completely disables its flagship Face ID functionality when you replace its screen. It has a small microcontroller that needs to be paired with the newly replaced chip, and this, apparently, can only be done using secret software that just authorised Apple repair guys have access to. This means regular third-party repair workers will not be able to fix the iPhone screen without having to sacrifice major functionality. iFixit notes that this could have huge implications for the professional repair industry, for which Apple is the dominant brand to service. Small shops could be shuttered, forced to choose between spending thousands on new equipment or losing a major source of income. For repair guys that want to survive, they will either need to join Apple's authorised repair network or physically move the soldered chip from the original screen onto the replacement. iFixit says this will require new equipment like a microscope or high-resolution webcam, a hot air rework station, a fine-tip soldering iron, and the necessary BGA stencils, flux, and other supplies. Many repair guys, iFixit reports, are also looking for another line of work. iFixit reports that the Face ID error shows up even after replacing the display on an iPhone 13 Pro Max with another original iPhone 13 Pro Max display. This was tested while the phone was running on iOS 15.1. Apple's monopolistic behaviour is not new, iFixit says, it has been locking down repair for years. But by locking down the most common repair for their devices, Apple has put many repair workers source of income at risk. “If we want repair shops to exist in our local communities, we have no choice but to pass right to repair legislation to protect them from this predatory, monopolistic behaviour,” iFixit says.

If you’ve been wishing for Microsoft to fix the Start menu in Windows 11, Stardock has come to the rescue with Start11, an application that can not only bring back a Windows 10-style Start menu, but a Windows 7 variant too. The Start menu in Windows 11 has had its share of feedback – both positive and negative – since it was showcased in June. It’s now placed in the middle of the taskbar, and the layout of apps and recently-used documents are more confusing to manage for some users. While we spoke in our Windows 11 review of the Start menu tweaks being mostly fine, it felt as though it was made more for users with touchscreens, rather than a mouse. However, Start11 looks to solve some of these grievances for Windows 11’s Start menu, before Microsoft has taken the feedback on board in a future update. But wait, there’s more features Stardock’s app doesn’t just give you back control of the Start menu, it also gives you personalization options. From deciding what the power button icon does, to whether all programs should show in a list, to just bringing back the style of Windows 10, the options are almost endless. The Start menu is something that users can be very protective of. If it changes in a major way, there’s going to be a discussion on whether it’s a justified update. For now, the jury is out on Windows 11’s Start menu, as Microsoft will inevitably refine and improve it over the coming years. But if you want to make some changes now, Stardock’s Start11 is a great way of doing just that. Analysis: Back to the Future In our review of Windows 11, and trying out the upgrade since its announcement in June, we found the Start menu to be a fine update overall. But with Microsoft’s focus on updating Windows in a series of seasonal updates, like they have for Windows 10, we didn’t think the Start menu was something to complain about too much. Granted, not being able to clear your recently viewed items is a strange omission, and again, we still feel that the design is focused more for touchscreens instead of mouse users. However, Windows 11 is a solid upgrade overall, and while Start11 will be able to alleviate some of the complaints that users have with the new Start menu, it’s only a matter of time before we see some updates from Microsoft on how it will be refined over time. Chinese manufacturer Hystou has decided to attempt a revival of sorts for Intel's Hades Canyon platform with a mini PC twist. The brainchild of one of the most surprising (and short-lived) collaborations between tech companies in recent years, the Kaby Lake-G APU inside Hystou's F9 packs Intel's 8th Gen Core technology alongside AMD's Radeon Vega M graphics. There's even a headphone-toting skull design on top of the case for that extra step into Hades Canyon's uncanny valley - with blue LED lighting to boot. The Hystou F9 manifests in a 9 x 5.8 x 2-inch rectangular package. Built out of an aluminum alloy casing with plastic inserts, the Hystou F9 offers an interesting array of I/O connections: 2x HDMI ports, 2x Mini DisplayPorts, 2x Gigabit Ethernet connections, 4x USB 3.0 Type-A ports, 4x USB 2.0 Type-A, a single USB 3.1 Type-C port, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. Internal storage expansion options include 2x M.2 2280 for NVMe drives (PCIe 3.0) and 1x 2.5 inch SATA drive (either SSD or mechanical). The Hystou F9 is available with four Kaby Lake-G CPU options. The chips are all quad-core parts running at different TDP and clockspeeds - the table below summarizes the available options. All of them feature a 4-core, 8-thread design; the differences lie in TDp, clockspeed, and the performance of the integrated AMD graphics subsystem. Vega GH packs in 24 CUs (offering performance similar to that of Nvidia's GTX 1060), while the Vega GL option cuts the CU amount to 20. Hystou F9 Configurations The Hystou F9 thus gives users some options - whether in pure CPU or GPU performance. In fact, Hystou is giving users access to silicon that Intel never made available through their Hades Canyon initiative. The Intel Core i7-8705G and Intel Core i7-8709G were never real options from Intel. The lower-tier hardware option thus brings the price down to $420 via Aliexpress. The Chinese e-tail giant only carries the Intel Core i5-8305G and i7-8705G options, though the other two configurations are only available through Hystou's website. The Mini PC can be acquired as a barebones package. This would allow you (or require you) to drop-in DDR4 RAM, storage, and an operating system, though options are available packing up to 64 GB of RAM (dual-stick) and a 512 GB SSD. However, support for Kaby Lake-G has been spotty at best, with Windows 10 - first abandoned by Intel, and finally by AMD, which cut off support for Kaby Lake-G from its mainstream driver releases in June 2020. Fortunately, a recent graphics driver update provided by AMD has brought Windows 11 support to Kaby Lake-G, expanding its lifetime in what is likely to be one last hurrah. Considering the historic platform and driver difficulties for Hades Canyon, choosing the Hystou F9 over a more modern option doesn't sound like the best option, unless you just like the idea of owning a piece of silicon designed by both AMD and Intel.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 has been spotted on Geekbench and Bluetooth SIG sites. The rumoured upcoming tablet is expected to come in Wi-Fi and LTE models. The Geekbench listing tips that the tablet may be powered by the Unisoc processor and run Android 11 software. Renders leaked in the past suggest the tablet will have significant bezels on all sides and a single rear camera setup. It is likely to pack a 7,040mAh battery and have an 8-megapixel rear camera. Geekbench has listed Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 in two models — Wi-Fi (SM-X200) and LTE (SM-X205). The tablet is listed to be powered by the Unisoc T6188 octa-core processor with a base clock speed of 2GHz. It is likely to pack 3GB RAM and run Android 11. The single-core score for the Wi-Fi model is 1,704 points and multi-core score is 5,256 points. The LTE model has a single-core score of 1,625 points and a multi-core score of 5,285 points. The SM-X205 model number was spotted on Bluetooth SIG as well. The listing offers no information on the specifications of the tablet, except for its Bluetooth v5 connectivity. The listings hint that a launch could be around the corner. Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 renders, specifications were earlier leaked by 91Mobiles. Cyber threat analysis firm Check point Research (CPR) has issued an alert regarding a recent phishing campaign mainly targeting Phantom and Metamask users. The threat makes use of Google Ads to bump fake websites in search results, meant to prompt users to provide their keys or make new wallets on behalf of bad actors. It's currently estimated that half a million dollars have been diverted from their legitimate users' wallets. Due to the nature of the attack being carried out during the (supposed) wallet creation process, new entrants to the crypto space are likely to be the most heavily affected. As with all high-coverage threats to cybersecurity, bad actors focus their efforts on platforms that are most po[CENSORED]r - as the number of potential victims increases, so does the potential return. Metamask and its 10.35 million peak users (as of August 2021) represents a sizable target for this phishing effort; the same is true for Phantom, which has already registered a million users since its introduction. The method seems to rely on the fact that these platforms make use of browser plugins as a facilitator. But beware: other DeFi apps like Sushiswap and Cakeswap are also po[CENSORED]r victims of this sort of malicious behavior for similar reasons. After erroneously clicking the top search result, users are then sent to a phishing website, which hides in plain sight by introducing a very minute change (such as phantonn instead of phantom) to the actual platform's web address. Users are then guided through a fake wallet creation process - which in reality, is just providing users with access to the attacker's wallet. After the "wallet setup" process has been completed, the phishing attack then redirects users towards the real website, where they're prompted to install the wallet extension. After introducing the pass phrase for the "generated" wallet address, users are actually connected to the bad actor's wallet. Any funds they transfer towards it can immediately be moved to another wallet that remains under the bad actor's control. While the Phantom phishing scheme is focused on new wallet creations, the Metamask phishing attack is different, in that it can actually steal the users' private key. Not only is the fake wallet generation possible, but victims are also prompted to import their existing Metamask wallet - which will immediately give access to all of their existing funds. More creative ways of stealing crypto funds have come and gone; however, and when it comes to this particular scam, an attentive user can look out for and easily skirt these attempts. Remember to always double-check the url you're clicking, and avoid landing in any crypto or banking-related page through an ad link.
