Microsoft is expanding is spreadsheet software with the addition of a new API which will allow developers to create their own custom data types in Excel. Countless solutions have been built in Excel using just text and numbers but over the course of its multi-year journey, the software giant has expanded the types of data users can work with natively in its software. This began with the introduction of Microsoft's Stocks and Geography “data types” back in 2018 and these linked data types allow for a single cell in a spreadsheet to contain a live, connected and rich set of information about objects like stocks, currencies, cities and countries. Last year though, Microsoft expanded on this vision by allowing customers to work with their own data as a data type. As a result, it became possible to automatically connect data from its Power BI business intelligence tool with Excel and this integration made published Power BI data discoverable in Excel as a structured data type. Now Microsoft is taking linked data types to a whole new level yet again with the introduction of a new JavaScript API in Excel. Custom data types With its new JavaScript API in Excel which will be available in preview later this month, Microsoft is making it possible for developers to create their own custom data types. These new custom data types can contain images, entities, arrays and formatted number values all backed by their own custom data sources. These new Excel data types can also be used as both inputs and outputs. Now developers will able to organize complex data as objects and present this data to users in more natural ways while still providing easy access to the full information users require for analysis or reporting according to a new blog post from Microsoft. Excel users can also create their own add-ins or extend previously existing ones to utilize the power of data types. Custom data types can even be shared across an entire organization and add-ins or other solutions can be created that are capable of connecting data types to a company's own service or data. Microsoft's new Javascript API will be available in public preview when the next version of the Office.JS Preview APIs are deployed near the end of this month. However, to create custom data types, users will need the Office.JS Preview API along with an Insiders Beta build of Excel for Windows or Mac. We've also highlighted the best spreadsheet software and the best business intelligence tools

According to a new driver release, Intel may be prepping as many as 32 Arc Alchemist discrete GPU models for desktops and laptops. The number may indicate that Intel will offer a rather broad family of standalone GPU offerings aimed at various applications. Intel's graphics drivers v30.0.101.1002 for integrated and standalone GPUs indicate that Intel has reserved as many as 32 PCI IDs for its DG2 family of discrete graphics processing units set to be marketed under the Arc Alchemist brand, LaptopVideo2Go revealed (via VideoCardz). A PCI ID typically represents a separate product or a SKU (stock keeping unit). Intel's official artwork for its Arc Alchemist family of discrete GPU only depicts two processors. This could mean Intel plans to release two graphics chips (a big and a small one) and offer them in different configurations (or it may mean Intel's designers decided to show two chips without any meaning). Making 32 distinct products using two graphics processors may not be common, but it's possible. Intel's official documents leaked earlier this year reveal that the company was working on GPUs with five configurations featuring 96 EUs, 128 EUs, 256 EUs, 384 EUs and 512 EUs based on the Xe-HPG architecture. However, this week it transpired that Intel was looking at an Arc GPU model with 448 EUs. At this point, it is unclear which GPU models are aimed solely at notebooks and which can be used both for desktops and laptops. Mobile GPUs tend to be available with different TGPs, so a GPU with 256 EUs can be offered with three different clocks and TGP settings and therefore be identified with three different PCI IDs. Furthermore, Intel intends to position its Xe-HPG-based GPUs for client PCs, workstations, and even servers, so the number of discrete GPU products it plans to offer with its DG2 GPU family will indeed be significant. Whether Intel will indeed offer 32 different standalone GPU SKUs next year is something that remains to be seen. To put the number of DG2 models into context, right now, the company only offers three discrete Xe-LP-based GPUs: the Iris Xe Max with 96 execution units (EUs) for notebooks, the Iris Xe discrete GPU with 80 EUs for desktops, and the Server GPU with 96 EUs for servers (primarily used for streaming Android games). Zoom has revealed its plan to roll out ads to free users of its video conferencing software in an effort to support investment and to continue providing free access to its platform. When employees around the world made the transition to working from home last year, the video conferencing service experienced exponential growth as its user base expanded from primarily being made up of enterprise users to include a large volume of individual users. Now though with organizations implementing hybrid work policies, more employees are returning to the office and relying on video calls less often throughout the day. While the age of Zoom may not be over yet, the company is changing its tactics when it comes to free users. It's also worth noting that there is still a 40-minute limit on the length of group calls for free Zoom users which could entice some people to upgrade to its paid plans. Pilot advertising program In a new blog post, chief marketing officer at Zoom, Janine Pelosi explained that the company is rolling out a pilot advertising program targeting its free Basic users. As part of the new program, ads will be rolled out for free users running Zoom's video conferencing software in a browser once they end their meeting. Only free users in certain countries will see these ads if they join meetings hosted by other Basic users but the company did not specify which countries will be part of its pilot advertising program. Going forward, free users will see a banner add on Zoom's website after ending a meeting with a link above the ad recommending they “Upgrade to Remove Ads”. Pelosi also pointed out that the company will not use meeting, webinar or messaging content including audio, video files and messages for any marketing, promotions or third-party advertising purposes. While Zoom is bringing ads to its platform for free users of its service, the company is doing so in a way that isn't obtrusive and likely won't interfere with the quality of their meetings.

A research team with Denmark's University of Copenhagen has designed the world's first quantum computing system that allows for simultaneous operation of all its qubits without threatening quantum coherence. The research is being hailed as a breakthrough, clearing one of the remaining key obstacles for quantum scaling and its eventual mainstream deployment. As quantum computing is still in its nascent stages, there are a number of technologies — and qubit types — concurrently being explored. The Danish team achieved its breakthrough in one particular type of qubit, spin qubits. You may remember these from our recent article on quantum benchmarks, where a company that is also employing the spin qubit approach, IonQ, achieved remarkable results compared to other systems. "To get more powerful quantum processors, we have to not only increase the number of qubits, but also the number of simultaneous operations, which is exactly what we did," states Professor Kuemmeth, who directed the research. As it stands, two important elements on the road to quantum computing are scaling, as in, adding more and more qubits (think computer cores) so that the system's processing capabilities increase; and coherence, as in, how stable the system is during workload processing, and how accurate its results are. With quantum scaling well on its way already, this research focuses on the coherence part of the equation. The scaling part of the problem has already seen incredible progress, but the same hasn't been true about the coherence part of the equation — until now. "Now that we have some pretty good qubits, the name of the game is connecting them in circuits which can operate numerous qubits, while also being complex enough to be able to correct quantum calculation errors," says Anasua Chatterjee, a member of the research team. "Thus far, research in spin qubits has gotten to the point where circuits contain arrays of 2x2 or 3x3 qubits. The problem is that their qubits are only dealt with one at a time." Think of it this way: you can't read the content of a letter until you actually mani[CENSORED]te the envelope they're in, opening it to scan what's inside. However, much in the same way that you change the state of the envelope in reaching the letter proper, qubits are changed when you try to read them. With quantum physics, mani[CENSORED]ting a single qubit has up to now resulted in (essentially) catastrophic decoherence of the surrounding system. Basically, the results stop being accurate. This research now proves there is a way to operate and measure the entire qubit subsystem without that fall to chaos. Chaterjee states, "The new and truly significant thing about our chip is that we can simultaneously operate and measure all qubits. This has never been demonstrated before with spin qubits — nor with many other types of qubits." Of course, the breakthrough won't be able to stand on its own; research work is never done. As such, the researchers have identified the most pressing limitations on their approach. While the control mechanism employed by the scientists has been proven to maintain quantum coherence, its current design requires sustained, manual tuning of the 48 control electrodes that actually make the system work. The team is now looking to AI control systems that could automatically keep the system tuned with no human intervention. Perhaps this breakthrough will bring renewed focus on spin qubits as the fastest way to achieve a scalable, coherent, and efficient quantum computer. Time will tell.

Intel has shared a new document that lists the DDR5 memory kits validated on the chipmaker's Alder Lake platform that will soon vie for a spot on our list of Best CPUs for gaming. This isn't something you see every day as Intel has never done so in the past, and typically only motherboard or memory vendors post QVLs. One common aspect among the different memory kits on Intel's QVL is that they are all dual-channel 32GB (2x16GB). There are 16GB (2x8GB) options out there, but it seems that the majority of memory manufacturers are starting right off the bat with the 32GB memory kits instead. Alder Lake supports DDR5-4800 by default; therefore, DDR5-4800 memory kits should work without any fanfare. One of DDR5's improvements includes a lower operating voltage (1.1V down from DDR4's 1.2V). However, only the DDR5-4800 and some of the DDR5-5200 memory kits run at 1.1V. As usual, not every DDR5-4800 memory kit is manufactured equal. Apparently, Corsair has the better binned DDR5-4800 memory kits out of all the vendors. The Dominator Platinum checks in with 34-35-35-69 timings, whereas Kingston's Fury Beast is rated for 38-38-38-70. The manufacturer offers memory kits from DDR5-6000 to DDR5-6666 from the Trident Z5 lineup. Regardless of the data rate, the memory kits have their timings configured to 40-40-40-76 and pull 1.35V. Those aren't even the fastest memory kits, though. G.Skill has already teased its DDR5-6800 memory kit, which will likely cost an arm and a leg. The official supported data rate on Alder Lake is DDR5-4800, so anything faster is considered overclocking. Although faster DDR5 memory kits are validated with Alder Lake, your processor's IMC (integrated memory controller) is still the deciding factor on whether you can run those DDR5-6000+ speeds. Alder Lake is uncharted territory, so no one really knows the capability of its IMC. Intel introduced gear ratios with the 11th Generation Rocket Lake family, which allowed the 14nm processors to accommodate memory up to DDR4-5333 -- well, the very extraordinary samples, at least. With memory brands already eyeing DDR5-10000, Alder Lake must be up to the task. The hybrid chips are available for preorder, with orders shipping out on November 4. Don't forget to check back for our thorough review of the new breed of desktop processors.

Microsoft plans to make its increasingly po[CENSORED]r online collaboration tool and video conferencing software a bit more fun by once again bringing Clippy back to Microsoft Teams. In a new post on its feedback portal, a company spokesperson revealed that “Clippy has agreed to come out of retirement” for a Retro Sticker Pack in Teams. If this sounds at all familiar, that's because a team of Microsoft employees created a similar sticker pack for Clippy over two years ago. However, at that time, the software giant quickly shut down the project with The Verge reporting that the company's “brand police” weren't happy that Clippy had resurfaced in Teams. Clippy first appeared as a virtual assistant back in Microsoft's office software with the release of Office 97. While Clippy was created to help users navigate the Office UI and provide tips to help them improve the quality of their writing, the animated paperclip's frequent interruptions were found to be annoying which is why Microsoft decided remove Clippy altogether in Office 2007 for Windows and Office 2008 for Mac. The company did this in a sly way though by claiming the latest version of Office was so simple to use that it had put Clippy out of a job. Teams sticker pack It now looks like Clippy's retirement has come to an end as Microsoft is planning to release a new retro sticker pack featuring the iconic Office character. Teams users will soon be able to reply to their coworkers in Teams chat using a variety of stickers featuring Clippy in a number of situations around the office. For instance, there are stickers showing Clippy with a cup of coffee, working on a laptop and covered in bandages after an office mishap. If a Clippy sticker pack isn't enough for your nostalgia, you can also download a Teams background featuring the iconic character and he has also replaced the standard paperclip emoji in Windows 11. It's great to see that Microsoft has changed its mind when it comes to bringing back Clippy and who knows, we may see more of everyone's favorite (or least favorite) paperclip going forward. We've also rounded up the best video conferencing software and best business webcams to make it easier to work from home Via The Verge
