  5. Honor 60 series has been scheduled to launch on December 1 in China, as per a teaser shared by the company. The upcoming smartphone series is said to comprise three models — Honor 60, Honor 60 Pro, and Honor 60 SE. Honor has also shared the design of the vanilla Honor 60 smartphone through a promotional poster — only showing the rear panel — and a video which shows the smartphone in its entirety. The specifications of the Honor 60 series are still unknown. Through a post on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, Honor shared that the upcoming Hono 60 series will break cover on December 1 at 7:30pm CST (5pm IST). As mentioned earlier, it is being speculated the upcoming smartphone series will comprise of Honor 60, Honor 60 Pro, and Honor 60 SE — similar to the Honor 50 lineup. Earlier this week, Honor shared the promotional poster of Honor 60 on Weibo. The poster has Chinese actor Gong Jun holding the smartphone. The poster also confirms that the model will have Honor 60 5G as its marketing moniker. Furthermore, Honor 60 is seen with its rear cameras housed in a twin-pod module, similar to its predecessor. The upcoming smartphone is also shown with a gradient Blue finish with starry sky elements. Furthermore, another promotional video on Weibo shows the complete design of the Honor 60 5G smartphone. As mentioned earlier, Honor 60 is shown with a twin-pod module for its rear cameras. There appears to be a small sensor placed between the two pods in the camera module, with the LED flash placed outside. The front is said to get a curved display and the smartphone is shown with rounded edges on all four corners. Apart from this, nothing else about the upcoming smartphone series is known at the moment.
  6. Microsoft has quietly rolled out a new mode for its web browser Edge that offers users an even greater level of security, in exchange for some loss of functionality. First teased in the summer, Super Duper Secure Mode is now available to anyone running the latest stable Microsoft Edge build (v. 96.0.1054.29). There are two separate configurations - Balanced and Strict - which determine the level of additional protection the user receives. The largest difference is that Balanced mode learns which sites the user frequents and loosens restrictions on these domains, whereas Strict mode applies restrictions across all websites, which may mean some elements no longer work as intended. Users can also create exceptions manually for websites they would like to be exempt from the extra security measures. Microsoft Edge security The main way in which Super Duper Secure Mode shields users from attack is by disabling a browser technology known as the Just in Time Engine (JIT), the role of which is to accelerate JavaScript tasks. According to Johnathan Norman, Microsoft Edge Vulnerability Research Lead, almost half of all security issues that affect the V8 JavaScript engine are caused by JIT. So by disabling JIT, Microsoft is able to reduce the level of threat dramatically, in one fell swoop. When active, Super Duper Secure Mode also enables control-flow enforcement technology (CET), a hardware-based exploit mitigation from Intel, and arbitrary code guard (ACG). Both security features were previously set to off by default, for performance-related reasons. “Performance and complexity often come at a cost, and often we bear this cost in the form of security bugs and subsequent patches,” wrote Norman when the new mode was first announced. “This reduction in attack surface kills half of the bugs we see in exploits and every remaining bug becomes more difficult to exploit. To put it another way, we lower costs for users but increase costs for attackers.” Super Duper Secure Mode can be switched on at the foot of the Privacy tab in the Edge settings menu. 7. A recently disclosed Microsoft Windows Installer zero-day vulnerability is now being explored by malware creators. Publicly disclosed by security researcher Abdelhamid Naceri on a Github post last Sunday, the vulnerability allows for local privilege escalation from user-level privileges up to SYSTEM level - the highest security clearance possible. According to the security researcher, this exploit works in all supporting versions of Windows - including fully-patched Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 installations. Before posting the exploit on GitHub, Naceri first disclosed it to Microsoft and worked with the company to analyze the vulnerability. Microsoft introduced a mitigation for the CVE-2021-41379 zero-day exploit in November 2021's Patch Tuesday - but apparently failed to remediate the issue completely. Naceri then took to his GitHub post to provide a proof-of-concept exploit of the vulnerability that works even after Microsoft's mitigations were applied. For the more technically-minded, Naceri's exploit leverages the discretionary access control list (DACL) for Microsoft Edge Elevation Service - this allows an attacker to replace any executable file on the system with an MSI file - and to run code as an administrator. BleepingComputer has tested Naceri's exploit and was able to open a command prompt with SYSTEM permissions from an account with low-level 'Standard' privileges. Cybersecurity company Cisco Talos has provided a statement about the exploit, reporting that they've already seen instances of malware in the wild that are currently attempting to exploit the flaws. As Cisco Talos' Head of Outreach Nick Biasini told BleepingComputer, these exploitation attempts seem to be focused on testing and tweaking the exploits as preparation for larger-scale attacks. Naceri explained that "the proof of concept is extremely reliable and doesn't require anything, so it works in every attempt." When it comes to mitigations, however, the researcher passes the ball to Microsoft: "The best workaround available at the time of writing this is to wait [for] Microsoft to release a security patch, due to the complexity of this vulnerability," explained Naceri. The researcher also mentioned that his work in circumventing Microsoft's CVE-2021-41379 patch attempts resulted in him finding two possible exploits: the disclosed one which we're reporting on here, and a second one that also triggers a unique behavior in the Windows Installer Service and allows for the same sort of privilege escalation technique. Naceri did say that he'll be waiting for Microsoft to completely patch the CVE-2021-41379 vulnerability before releasing the second exploit method. On the issue, a Microsoft spokesperson told BleepingComputer that "We are aware of the disclosure and will do what is necessary to keep our customers safe and protected. An attacker using the methods described must already have access and the ability to run code on a target victim's machine." And while Microsoft initially classified this vulnerability as medium-severity (with a base CVSS score of 5.5, and a temporal score of 4.8), the fact that functional proof-of-concept code is already out in the wild and being actively exploited by malware developers should bolster the severity of the vulnerability and prompt a faster, more decisive fix from Microsoft.

  13. OnePlus RT India launch could happen very soon. Ahead of the official announcement, Amazon's OnePlus RT advertisement has surfaced on Google search results, as per a tipster. Recently, the upcoming OnePlus phone has been spotted on both the Google Supported Devices List and Google Play Listing website hinting at an imminent launch. OnePlus 9RT, which went live in China in October is expected to arrive in India with the OnePlus RT moniker. The handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC and features a triple camera setup, headlined by a 50-megapixel main sensor. Amazon's advertisement of OnePlus RT in the Google search results was first spotted by known tipster Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings). However, OnePlus RT is not listed on the e-commerce website. Based on this, it's safe to speculate that the company is likely to introduce the OnePlus 9RT as OnePlus RT in the Indian market. However, the brand hasn't confirmed anything regarding OnePlus RT's India launch. To recall, OnePlus 9RT was launched in China in October with a price tag of CNY 3,299 (roughly Rs. 38,600) for the base 8GB + 128GB storage variant and CNY 3,499 (roughly Rs. 40,900) for the 8GB + 256GB model. Specifications of OnePlus 9RT include a 6.62-inch full-HD+ (1,080x2,400 pixels) Samsung E4 AMOLED display with 20:9 aspect ratio and up to 120Hz refresh rate. The handset packs a 4,500mAh dual-cell battery which supports Warp Charge 65T fast charging.
  14. Russian modder and repair specialist VIK-on is known for modifying an RTX 2070 and RTX 3070 to 16GB of VRAM. This time he worked his magic at doubling the VRAM capacity of an RTX 2060. His timing is impeccable, as Nvidia is rumored to release a real RTX 2060 12GB SKU very soon. With the 12GB mod, VIK-on has provided us with a tiny sneak peek into what the RTX 2060 12GB's extra memory could offer. VIK-on chose to mod an Asus RTX 2060 Turbo that was repaired with a new phase on its power delivery system. For memory, he decided on Samsung K4ZAF325BM-HC14 ICs, which are 2GB in capacity. The standard card already features 1GB ICs, so it's just a matter of replacing the 1GB ICs with the Samsung 2GB ICs. Remember that memory IC swaps like this won't work with every memory chip on the market. This is because each GPU only has a select number of supported memory chips it can use, and those specifications are rarely ever shown to the public. That explains why memory conversions like this are very rare. After re-assembling the card, VIK-on ran both Superposition and an Ethereum miner to see if there were any performance benefits over the 6GB model, of which there were none. Both the Superposition test and mining tests revealed the same performance as the 6GB model. However, the additional 6GB of memory is just a capacity upgrade and shouldn't increase performance when GPU memory stays below the 6GB mark. But for applications that take advantage of more than 6GB of VRAM, you should see a performance benefit. Even for gaming, the extra 6GB of VRAM could come in handy depending on what games you play. We already see 2021 AAA titles, such as Battlefield 2042, bringing the current 6GB 2060 to its knees if you crank up the graphics settings too high. So a boost in VRAM capacity would solve the issue. This could be the very reason why Nvidia is rumored to be re-releasing the RTX 2060 with a new 12GB model, but it's just a guess on our end. For more details on this GPU, check out our coverage here. We believe the card could be coming in January of 2022 and serve as an alternative replacement for the RTX 3050/3050 Ti in the entry-level GPU market, thanks to TSMC's relatively unused 12nm process making the RTX 2060 cards relatively cheap to build.
  15. Amazon’s cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has put out a preview of its custom Amazon Linux distro (AL2022), while committing to refreshing the distro every two years. Amazon Linux is po[CENSORED]r with AWS users for its tight integration with AWS tools, and no license costs. The service also ensures that its new features work as advertised with the distro. The distro has had two major releases till now; the first in 2010, and the second in 2017. However, with the third AL2022 release the service is committing to a two year release cycle, with each release supported for a period of five years. “Today, we are announcing the public preview of Amazon Linux 2022 (AL2022), Amazon's new general purpose Linux for AWS that is designed to provide a secure, stable, and high-performance execution environment to develop and run your cloud applications,” shared AWS. Based on Fedora According to the announcement, AL2022 is based on the po[CENSORED]r Fedora distro, and ships with the Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) kernel security module enabled and enforced by default. AWS argues that the two year major release cycle, with updates shipped quarterly via minor releases, will help keep the software current, while the five year support commitment for each major release will give customers the stability they need to manage long project lifecycles. “AL2022 combines the benefits of our current Amazon Linux products with a predictable, two year release cycle, so customers can plan for operating system upgrades as part of their product lifecycles,” reasons AWS. AL2022 is now available in preview in all commercial regions and is provided at no additional charge. Interested in learning Linux? 22. Microsoft is set to roll out an update for collaboration platform Teams that will add a layer of friction to using third-party app integrations, but for good reason. According to a new entry in the company’s product roadmap, Microsoft Teams users will soon have to manage permissions manually for each third-party app they want to use via the web client. “In order to better secure Microsoft Teams third-party applications that request native device permissions - such as camera, microphone or location access - we will be requiring users to manually opt-in for these permissions per app in the Microsoft Teams web browser experience,” wrote Microsoft. This is already the case across the Microsoft Teams desktop and mobile clients, the roadmap entry goes on to explain. The new web client permissions system is still under development, but should take effect for all users by February next year. Microsoft Teams apps Since the start of the pandemic, collaboration software vendors like Microsoft, Zoom and Slack have worked hard to expand upon in-built functionality (video conferencing, VoIP, messaging, file-sharing etc.) with third-party integrations. In Microsoft’s case, the company is aiming to turn Teams into a central hub for work, by building as wide a range of functionality into the platform as possible, from cloud storage and CRM to project management, calendering and more. Only last week, Microsoft revealed it is developing a new-look app store that should make it easier to identify the most useful third-party integrations on a per user basis. As the number of Teams applications grows, however, the likelihood one might be abused for cybercriminal purposes rises too. To nip any potential issues in the bud, Microsoft will soon require users to manually specify app permissions across all Teams clients (desktop, mobile and now browser). Of course, the measure won’t stop users from giving malicious apps access to their webcam and audio feed, but at the very least it will force people to think twice about which apps they engage with. 23. If you're looking to upgrade your PC with a new graphics card, your best plan of attack may be GPU shucking. It might go by other names, but the idea is to buy a complete pre-built PC that includes the graphics card you want, then strip out the GPU and sell off the rest of the system. And unlike hard drive shucking, the main PC would still be perfectly serviceable and should help recover some of the graphics card cost. Basically, find a PC that includes one of the best graphics cards, or really anything from the upper half of our GPU benchmarks hierarchy, buy the PC, remove the graphics card, and sell what remains as a PC with integrated graphics — or give it to a family member that doesn’t play games. Here are some things you'll want to consider before taking this approach to acquiring a graphics card. First, set your expectations appropriately. Put bluntly, pretty much no one will give you a good deal on a current generation graphics card during this holiday season. Demand for GPUs, from gamers as well as cryptocurrency miners, remains extremely high. Our GPU price index shows how much the various cards cost (on average) from eBay, and that's the price you'll want to beat. How Much Do You Save By Shucking? Here's a recent example. Dell had a deal for an XPS desktop with an RTX 3060 for $999, $370 off the "normal" price. The specs on most of the PC were underwhelming, but the deal still sold out. That's because the RTX 3060 on its own currently goes for around $725 on eBay or $900 on Amazon, over double the normal price. It includes a previous-gen Core i5-11400, 8GB RAM, a 1TB hard drive (and no SSD!), plus the case, power supply, Windows 10, and an optical drive (how quaint). Add all of those up and you're looking at about $450 in total cost. If you could sell the rest of the PC for $450, you'd effectively pay just $550 for the RTX 3060. Yeah, that's still a lot more than the official $329 MSRP, but MSRPs are basically a fever dream right now. Every desirable GPU, from budget cards like the GTX 1650 Super and RX 5500 XT up through high-end options like the RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT, costs about twice the official launch price. We don't expect that status quo to change any time soon, as shortages and supply chain shipping issues are likely to last throughout 2022. Dell has had a couple of other desktop deals go by, like the XPS Special Edition for $1,469 with an RTX 3060 Ti. That was supposedly $630 off, though no one should pay full retail pricing on a Dell. Looking at the components, that's basically an $850 PC, plus the graphics card, which means you could get the RTX 3060 Ti for about $620 — it goes for about $950 on eBay right now. Meanwhile, the Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition was on sale for $1,322 (down $387 from normal), with a comparable PC cost of about $750 — around $572 for the included RTX 3060 12GB, then. What Kind of Graphics Card Will You Shuck? There are other caveats, of course. First, you need to find a buyer for the rest of the PC, and that could take a few weeks after you get the system. Your newly acquired graphics card will come with no real warranty, other than a one-year warranty through the OEM (which might be void if you remove the GPU from the original PC). Finally, you're likely to get a generic graphics card if you purchase from a big OEM, which will generally be at the bottom end of the ladder when looking at specs and features — don't expect an Asus ROG Strix, MSI Gaming X, EVGA FTW3, etc. or RGB lighting, in other words. This is actually more of a problem than you might think. Our GPU benchmarks use reference model cards from AMD and Nvidia where possible, or third-party cards from major AIB (add-in board) partners for GPUs where there isn't a reference design. Usually, the reference cards show the lowest possible level of performance you can expect from a particular GPU, but that doesn't include OEM-specific designs. Buy a pre-built PC from a major OEM, and you're basically asking Monty Hall which GPU is behind door number 3. It could — and probably will — have a noticeably inferior cooler, lowered clocks, a reduced TDP, and a custom VBIOS to make the card work in a limited airflow custom PC case. None of those are good things. You can mostly avoid these problems if you buy a pre-built system from a custom PC system integrator, but as you might expect, prices on such PCs tend to be higher. So at that point, you might as well just go out and pay the massively inflated GPU prices on eBay or Amazon and save yourself the hassle. To Shuck or Not to Shuck? Of course, there's nothing saying that you need to shuck the rest of the PC. Maybe you're still running an older rig with a 4-core CPU. Technically, that's still sufficient for most games, but if you could upgrade your graphics card along with the rest of the PC, maybe selling off your old system would be a better approach. Or donate it to a family member or friend — can I be your friend? (Actually, I'm the last person to need more PC parts...) But seriously, a full PC upgrade might not be a bad idea, and our best gaming PC deals can help find something worth buying. Just remember that if you do pull out the GPU, you'll have better luck selling off an Intel system that includes integrated graphics; most Ryzen CPUs (non-G processors) will need a graphics card to function as a standalone PC. Whether you elect to keep the system or shuck it for the GPU, you should be careful to price out exactly what you get. While a system with a single 8GB DIMM might technically be okay, it gives up performance by not having a dual-channel memory configuration. That will be even more noticeable if you use the integrated graphics, but even with a dedicated GPU, single-channel RAM can cost you 10-15% of the potential performance. The problem is that as soon as you start doing "small" upgrades, the price can ramp up quickly. Based on what we've seen on current PC desktop deals, the typical price for a modern RTX 30-series or RX 6000-series graphics card when purchased with a pre-built PC tends to be about 50% higher than the AMD and Nvidia "fake" MSRPs. eBay prices can sometimes match that if you get lucky on an auction, but the going rates on eBay are closer to a 100% markup on most cards, and prices are currently trending up. If you really want a new high-end graphics card, be prepared to pay a premium for it.
