  3. Windows 11 has a neat new privacy tool which is now in testing, and allows you to see what applications have recently accessed sensitive bits of hardware like your webcam. The Privacy Auditing feature was shown off on Twitter, by Microsoft’s VP for Enterprise and OS Security, David Weston, and it’s present in a new preview build of Windows 11 (being tested in the Dev Channel, where the earliest preview versions of the OS are put through their paces). The feature nestles under Settings (in Privacy & security > App permissions), where you can view a list of recent activity to see, for example, which apps have accessed your microphone in the past week, or maybe your camera, another obvious point of call for checking up on any potentially suspicious activity. It also keeps tabs on applications which have accessed your contacts, or details relating to your location, phone calls and more. In each instance, the user is also told the exact time and date of the access made to the hardware or function in question. Analysis: A useful way to keep an eye on your applications It’s good to see that the coverage provided here is pretty wide-ranging in terms of keeping tabs on various sensitive bits and bobs, from the obvious cameras and mics, through to contacts and other such details. This is great info to have in terms of transparency relating to what the software on your system is getting up to. Periodically checking through the privacy audits present in Settings could potentially yield some interesting findings, flagging up apps that you wouldn’t have otherwise known had got their claws into some more sensitive aspects of your system (or highlighting something malicious that has flown under the radar, even). Microsoft has long had a troubled reputation for privacy when it comes to Windows, particularly since Windows 10 came along, so it’s also good to see the software giant taking a positive step forward on this front – one that should help Windows 11 users maintain a better level of vigilance and overall security when it comes to their PC. Assuming the feature makes it past the testing stage, of course...
  4. Is it that time already? Every three weeks we get an insight into European graphic card pricing trends and insight from 3DCenter. The latest survey data, which considers a host of prices across Germany and Austria, marks a milestone this time around as the average AMD graphics card is now 5% cheaper than MSRP. Nvidia's cards have kept a tentative grip on MSRP+ pricing, with the green team's average graphics card at 2% above MSRP. The last time we reported on the 3DCenter data, three weeks ago, we noted that graphics cards were slowly descending to their MSRPs. The averages were helped by some big price cuts to premium products, but some 'core offerings' remained stubbornly overpriced, by as much as 30%. In the latest survey there is still imbalance in pricing. These prices are focused on European countries, but they give us a general insight into which direction they are going. Probably the worst place to be as a GPU buyer in late June 2022 is one looking for the traditional sweet spots for good value performance gaming from the best GPUs. Those pondering buying an AMD GPU will see that the most 'overpriced' examples are centered around the Radeon RX 6600 (~20% over MSRP). Nvidia fans will find the most 'overpriced' GPUs are the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (17%), RTX 3060 (11%), and RTX 3050 (13%). Of course these prices are the result of supply and demand, which indicates people are still willing to pay more for this level of performance, or shortages persist across these mainstream products. If it is indeed shortages keeping the mainstream gaming cards over MSRP, by the time of the next survey there could be some more dramatic movements. The Tom's Hardware graphics editor Jarred Walton is of the firm opinion that the GPU deluge has begun. The phenomena we are observing now is largely due to the collapse of cryptocurrencies as speculative capital takes flight to less risky assets. This follows typical investor / speculator behavior when faced with a recession. If you are interested, please check out our article with logic and reasoning backing up our assertion that things are starting to go south rapidly in the GPU market. Our article on the GPU deluge includes consideration of both new and used graphics card prices (data from June 15). For extra fuel on the GPU pricing bonfire, please also consider that the next gen GPUs from AMD and Nvidia are expected to launch within the next four months. Traditionally, tech markets go cool ahead of a refresh, causing retailers and used sellers to cut prices deeper.
  5. Musician Name: Mariah Carey Birthday / Location: Mariah Carey March 27, 1969 (age 53) Huntington; New York american new york Main instrument: R&B · hip hop · pop · soul Musician Picture: Musician Awards & Nominations:- Best Performance: - Other Information: Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1969) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. Renowned for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style and unique use of the whistle register, she is referred to as the "Supreme Bird" and "Queen of Christmas". Throughout her career, Carey has been considered one of the greatest and most influential vocalists in recorded music history. She is credited with influencing the vocal construction of many artists from different musical genres and as one of the first artists to po[CENSORED]rize hip hop and the practice of remixing in po[CENSORED]r music. Under the guidance of her ex-husband, executive Tommy Mottola, Carey rose to fame in the early 1990s after signing to Sony Music and releasing her eponymous debut album, which topped the Billboard 200 for eleven consecutive weeks. The work made her the only artist in history to have her first five songs from work reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, from "Vision of Love" to "Emotions". The artist's po[CENSORED]rity continued to grow with her subsequent albums Emotions (1991), Music Box (1993) and Merry Christmas (1994), the latter being the most purchased Christmas album of all time. In addition to producing several other number one hits, including "Dreamlover", "Hero", "Without You" and "All I Want for Christmas Is You". With Daydream (1995), Carey made history when her second single, "One Sweet Day", a duet with Boyz II Men, scored sixteen consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, a record held for 23 years. After parting ways with Mottola, she adopted a new image and incorporated more hip hop elements into her works, which was evident with the release of Butterfly (1997) and Rainbow (1999). After eleven consecutive years of charting number one singles in the US, she left Sony in 2000 and signed a $100 million record deal with Virgin Records. However, after having a highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown, as well as the critical and commercial failure of her film Glitter (2001) and its corresponding soundtrack, Virgin terminated her contract for 50 million and she signed with Island the following year. . After a relatively unsuccessful period, her follow-up albums The Emancipation of Mimi (2005) and E=MC² (2008) brought her back to the top of the charts and had the songs "We Belong Together" and "Touch My Body" at the top of the charts. Billboard Hot 100. However, since Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), she has again experienced relative success with her releases. His work has earned him three Book of Records entries, five Grammys, 21 American Music Awards, 21 World Music Awards, and several others, in addition to the titles of "Icon of the Industry" and "Artist of the 1990s" and 19 #1 singles. place in the United States — more than any other female artist of the Billboard Hot 100 era. Carey became the first artist to debut three songs at the top of that chart, the most of any other musician. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the most certified woman in the United States, based on her 68.5 million units accounted for. Worldwide it has distributed 200 million recordings, which makes it a record holder in sales. VH1 ranked her second on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music, while music magazine Rolling Stone recognized her as one of the 100 Greatest Vocalists of All Time. In 2019, Billboard magazine named her the fifth best-performing musician of all time on its charts. Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York, on March 27, 1969. She is the third child of Patricia Hickey, an opera singer and vocal coach of Irish descent, and Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer, the son of an African-American mother. American with a Venezuelan immigrant. Her first name was derived from the song "They Call the Wind Maria", originally the theme of the 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon, while her surname was adopted by her Venezuelan grandfather Francisco Núñez after he emigrated to New York. Patricia's family disowned her for marrying a black man. As a multi-racial family, racial tensions prevented the Careys from integrating into the community. While living in Huntington, neighbors poisoned the family dog and set their car on fire. After her parents divorced, Carey had little contact with Alfred, and her mother had to work multiple jobs to support her and her siblings. At the age of five, Carey was already correcting her mother when she sang wrong notes. Patricia then realized that her daughter had an absolute musical ear, something rare for a child of that age. Spent a lot of time at home alone, Carey would listen to music to pass the time and always imitate the high notes she heard from her mother. She began writing poetry and lyrics while attending Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, from which she graduated in 1987. Although she introduced her daughter to classical opera, Patricia never pressured her to pursue a career in it; Carey noted that Patricia "has never been a pushy mother. She never said, 'Give [her singing] more of an operatic feel." I have a lot of respect for opera, but it never influenced me." While on Long Island she had the opportunity to work with musicians like Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies, with whom she co-wrote material for her demo tape. Willing to pursue a recording contract , Carey moved to New York City, where she lived with two other friends in a small rented apartment. During this period, she worked as a waitress and assistant at a beauty salon. After auditioning, she joined as a backing vocalist for singer Brenda K. Starr.

  11. Discord is adding a new tool for moderators to prevent harmful messages from appearing on its platform, and is expanding its Premium Membership subscription. The harmful language tool is called AutoMod and it was revealed in a Power Rangers chicken parody on YouTube(opens in new tab). Despite the announcement video’s silliness, AutoMod(opens in new tab) is a rather important upgrade that’ll help take the load off the platform's moderators, especially if they have to run a massive server. Auto-protect As briefly mentioned, AutoMod prevents trolls from spamming a chat with hateful language. The way the tool works is moderators first select the words or phrases to ban from the server. Moderators can add the words themselves or grab them off the Commonly Flagged Words(opens in new tab) list which is split into three categories: Insults and Slurs, Sexual Content, and Severe Profanity. Once the words are added, moderators can select from three different responses. They can either prevent the message with the harmful word from being posted, send an alert to moderators, or block the user. Discord also took into account bad actors trying to sneak in words and bypass AutoMod with the Wildcard feature. Say, for example, a troll is trying to sneak in a swear word by attaching it as the suffix of another. Moderators can use Wildcard by placing asterisks before, after, or around a word to ensure AutoMod picks it up if someone is trying to hide harmful language. Exemptions can be added for moderators, admins, other users, or for entire channels through AutoMod. When all of this is set up, AutoMod will - true to its name - automatically block and manage the harmful language, taking the load off of moderators. The tool is currently in beta and can be found under Content Moderation in Server Settings, according to Discord(opens in new tab). You try out AutoMod on the Discord browser app, mobile, Windows, macOS, and Linux. Also, the Commonly Flagged Words list is available in English only. We asked Discord if the beta is in the US only and when they will add support for other languages, but didn't get a response. Growing Premium As for Premium Membership, the company is expanding it to other servers later this summer, but only in the US. Not to be confused with Discord Nitro(opens in new tab) which adds new features to an account, Premium Memberships are for individual servers. It allows for certain parts of a server to be behind a pay-wall. Memberships also allow admins to decide the price point of different tiers and what perks people get. In the new update, there is a revamped analytics dashboard that displays more information on revenue, support for custom emojis, and the ability to give free membership trials to community members. Discord concludes its big update by opening a new Community page to teach moderators how to manage servers. If you’re interested in learning more about Discord, TechRadar has a guide for beginners. Update June 16, 2022: Shortly after we published this story, Discord got back to us on AutoMod’s availability. The representative confirmed AutoMod is available worldwide and you’ll need to enable Community features in the Server Settings menu. As for Commonly Flagged Words, AutoMod can detect other languages, emojis, links, symbols, and punctuation. You will have to add them yourself into Custom Keyword Rules, however. The Flagged Words will stay in English for now as Discord plans on adding new features to AutoMod.
  12. Intel has published a page of system requirements for its newly released Arc desktop graphics cards as part of a quick start guide. The guide features a list of supported hardware configurations, but the paucity of confirmed system support is eyebrow raising – only 10th, 11th, and 12th Gen Intel Core processors are given a wholehearted thumbs up for Arc GPU support, and there is no mention of AMD processor based system support at all. Is Resizable BAR Essential? Yes, No, Maybe. According to the support document, before you start using your Intel Arc GPU you should make sure Resizable BAR is enabled. Resizable BAR is a GPU memory access feature also known as ReBAR for short (or Smart Access Memory on AMD CPU-based systems). In the motherboard section of the document Intel Support indicates that ReBAR is a requirement. Elsewhere, the company lists it only as a requirement for "optimal performance." A step-by-step guide to turning on ReBAR is provided, and ReBAR is discussed in four out of the six FAQs. It is not made clear at all whether ReBAR is an essential option that would be system-breakingly bad to ignore, or whether those who don't enable it will see some performance hits in certain apps/games. Other GPU vendors don't make such a big fuss about ReBAR, so we aren't sure why it would be critical for Intel Arc users. A glimmer of hope regarding some clarity about ReBAR requirements is provided when the support document says the Intel Driver and Support Assistant (IDSA) can be used to "quickly automatically detect if your system is ready for Intel Arc discrete graphics." So we downloaded it, ran it, and its menus seemed to simply open various support web pages. Later in the Intel Support document about Arc, it is indicated that you run IDSA after you have installed an Arc GPU to see if ReBAR is enabled. That isn’t as helpful as we hoped. Intel's overtly supported hardware configurations start with the 10th Gen Core processors, but even this is more complicated than that statement indicates. In a FAQ section, Intel admits that "support for resizable BAR on 10th Gen platforms will vary." The guide is a bit confusing, and Intel should clear it up. Potential buyers should only jump-in if they have one of the newest Intel CPU based systems for now and should wait for third party reviews. A better description of the system requirements and tests with and without ReBAR across various platforms ciykd b egekofykm tii, In case you missed it, Intel and its partners released the first flurry of Arc A380 graphics cards on Wednesday, with initial availability limited to China. When we get our hands on the new cards, we'll test them for considerations for our list of the best graphics cards.
  13. Musician Name: Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero Birthday / Location: April 15, 1978 (44 years old)San Juan Puerto Rico Main instrument: Reggaeton Pop latino Musician Picture: Musician Awards & Nominations:- Best Performance: - Other Information: Fonsi was born on April 15, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the eldest son of Alfonso Rodríguez and Delia "Tata" López-Cepero. He has two younger brothers: Jean Rodriguez, who is also a singer, and Tatiana Rodríguez. Growing up, Fonsi showed signs that music would direct his life—as a child, he imitated the stars of the po[CENSORED]r group Menudo, and joined the San Juan Children's Choir. After living in the United States for a month, Fonsi learned to speak English without an accent. He participated in Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida and participated in a group called "Big Guys". They sang at school and local parties. One of the group's members, Joey Fatone, later joined *NSYNC. In 1995, Fonsi enrolled at Florida State University to study music. He also joined the school choir and sang with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Because music was such an important part of his life, Fonsi attended Florida State University of Florida on a full scholarship, [with a major in Vocal Performance. He also joined the university's choir, which let him travel and play all over the world, and recorded demo tapes in Miami. Soon after, he was offered a recording contract by Universal Music Latin. In 1998, Fonsi recorded his debut album, Comenzaré (I will begin). The record reached number 11 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums and contained the singles "If You Wanted", "Perdoe Me", "Tell Me Like" and "I'll Go". In the same year, he debuted his album in English "Fight The Feeling" trying to cross with the first single "Secret" with Joey Fatone in the video. In 2003, Luis Fonsi sang for thousands of viewers around the world at Miss Universe 2003 in China. His fifth CD, Abrazar la Vida, sold very well, which opened up new markets in Europe. "¿Quién Te Dijo Eso?" reached number one on the Billboard Latin charts. Her sixth CD, Paso a Paso, debuted at number one and launched it internationally. . "Nada Es Para Siempre" also reached number one on the music charts, and was a Latin Grammy nominee. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot chart. Latin Tracks, one of their biggest hits so far. "No Me Doy por Vencido" became Billboard's "Latin Pop Song of the Decade" and spent 21 weeks at number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart. In November 2009, Luis Fonsi was awarded a Latin Grammy for "Song of the Year" for the composition "Aquí Estoy Yo". On December 11, 2009, Fonsi performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, the event's chairman, President Barack Obama. In 2011, Fonsi released the album Tierra Firme and toured to promote it throughout Latin America. On July 9, 2011, Billboard named Fonsi "Leader of the New Generation of Latin Music". In 2014, Fonsi released his album 8, a reference to his eighth career album. He then did a tour called "Somos Uno" in 2014-15. He also mentioned that acting would be on his career path and that he wouldn't mind acting with Mexican actors and actors. In January 2017, "Despacito" featuring Daddy Yankee was released and publicized. On October 14, 2017, the music video reached four billion views on YouTube, with the song becoming number one on nearly every Latin Billboard chart and the most viewed video in the world. In April 2017, the song received an English remix featuring Canadian singer Justin Bieber. The remix featuring Bieber reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending May 27, 2017, becoming Fonsi and Yankee's first on the chart and Bieber's fifth. Bieber promoted the remix at one of his shows in Puerto Rico, inviting Fonsi on stage to sing the duet with him. The song remained at number one for 16 consecutive weeks, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's One Sweet Day as the longest reigning lead song in the chart's history. In November 2017, he released the song "Échame la Culpa" with Demi Lovato, which debuted at #3 on the Hot Latin chart. In May 2018, "Despacito II" was released by DespacitoTV as a response to anticipation about Fonsi and his hit. The song is a remix of the original Despacito, with Undertale, Charlie Puth, and Soulja Boy overlaid to match the rhythm of the original song. As of July 2018, the music video has garnered over one million views on YouTube. The video description lists Fonsi as the author and composer, however this has yet to be confirmed by Fonsi himself. The description also lists Thanos, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and The Trump Organization as part of the key clearance personnel, however this has yet to be confirmed by either Fonsi or the corresponding parties. However, given the song's immense po[CENSORED]rity, it received validity for being listed as a track on YouTube Music. In June 2018, Fonsi released the single "Calypso" featuring Stefflon Don. On June 29, Luis Fonsi sang with Aitana the song Échame la culpa at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The sixteen participants of Operation Triumph also met there, and the concert was attended by 60,000 people. Raphael, David Bustamante, Rosa López, Pastora Soler and Zahara were the other guests. 18. The browser wars(opens in new tab) could soon heat up again following a bold declaration from Firefox(opens in new tab). The Mozilla-owned platform has declared itself to be the most private and secure browser(opens in new tab) available across Windows and Mac following the rollout of an upgraded privacy tool that provides its "strongest privacy protection to date." The company's Total Cookie Protection tool, which locks cookies only to the site where they were created rather than following a user around the web, will now be available as a default for Firefox users. Total Cookie Protection "Whether it’s applying for a student loan, seeking treatment or advice through a health site, or browsing an online dating app, massive amounts of your personal information is online — and this data is leaking all over the web," the company wrote in a blog post(opens in new tab) announcing the news. "It’s an alarming reality — the possibility that your every move online is being watched, tracked and shared — and one that’s antithetical to the open web we at Mozilla have strived to build. That’s why we developed Total Cookie Protection to help keep you safe online." Total Cookie Protection had been introduced back in 2021(opens in new tab), but users had to toggle it on - although it was activated whenever a user switched on Firefox privacy mode. Mozilla went on to outline how the system works - essentially by creating a separate “cookie jar” for each website you visit, which stays in the jar. This should mean that website trackers are no longer able to link up your behavior on multiple sites, instead just seeing behavior on individual sites. "No other websites can reach into the cookie jars that don’t belong to them and find out what the other websites’ cookies know about you — giving you freedom from invasive ads and reducing the amount of information companies gather about you." Mozilla says this approach allows third-party cookies to fulfill some of their less invasive use cases (e.g. to provide accurate analytics) but also eliminating the worst privacy properties - namely, tracking users around the web. "With Total Cookie Protection in Firefox, people can enjoy better privacy and have the great browsing experience they’ve come to expect," the company said. Mozilla will hope that the addition helps boost its share of the global browser market, which has struggled in recent months. Recent Statcounter data showed Firefox in fourth place with a 3.41% market share, behind fierce rival Microsoft Edge (4.05%) and far away from long-time leaders Google Chrome (64.34%) and Apple’s Safari (19.16%).
  19. Intel and researchers from UT Austin, UIUC, and UW published papers today outlining the 'Hertzbleed' chip vulnerability that allows side-channel attacks that can steal secret AES cryptographic keys by observing the CPU's boost frequency/power mechanisms. According to external researchers, both Intel and AMD CPUs are impacted, but AMD hasn't issued an advisory yet. The vulnerability doesn't impact all cryptographic code, but some mitigation techniques for impacted systems come with as-yet-undefined performance penalties. Intel says it had found this vulnerability via internal security investigations, but external research teams later disclosed their findings to the company. Today's coordinated disclosure brings the issue into the public eye, but it is likely that CPUs from other vendors are also impacted. Like all side-channel attacks, a Hertzbleed-based attack steals data by observing or exploiting a secondary effect of an operation on a system. In this case, by observing the power signature of any given cryptographic workload. As with most workloads, the power signature of a cryptographic workload varies due to the CPU's dynamic boost clock frequency adjustments during the workload. An attacker can convert that power information to timing data, allowing them to steal cryptographic keys. Cryptographic implementations that are already hardened against power side-channel attacks aren't susceptible to the Hertzbleed vulnerability. The vulnerability impacts all Intel processors and AMD Zen 2 and Zen 3, but it isn't clear if it will impact the upcoming Zen 4 Ryzen 7000. Hertzbleed can be exploited remotely — it doesn't require physical access. It has only been proven on Intel and AMD silicon. However, it should theoretically apply to almost all modern CPUs because it works by observing the power algorithms behind the Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique, a staple of modern processors. As such, this isn't a microarchitecture-specific attack — any processor with dynamic power and thermal management is potentially impacted. Intel says this has prompted it to share its findings with other chipmakers so they can assess any potential impact. Intel says that it doesn't think this attack is practical outside of a lab environment, partially because it takes "hours to days" to steal a cryptographic key. Additionally, an exploit based on this attack would require sophisticated high-resolution power monitoring capabilities. Intel's mitigation includes software fixes for any code that is susceptible to enabling a power side-channel attack — the company is not deploying firmware fixes. AMD is also not issuing a microcode patch. However, as you can see in the table above, some of the mitigation techniques do have a 'high' impact on performance. This varies by technique and whether or not it can be accomplished in hardware or software, or a combination of both. Naturally, the most direct method of stopping the attack is to disable Turbo Boost (Intel) or Precision Boost (AMD) entirely, but that has a tremendous performance impact. We're working on getting a more precise definition of any performance impacts for the other techniques. Hertzbleed has been assigned the Intel-SA-00698 ID and CVE-2022-24436 ID for Intel, and CVE-2022-23823 for AMD. We're boiling down the Hertzbleed vulnerability to the essence of how it works, there are many more details to be found in both the original papers and Intel's guidance on the matter — head here for a deeper description. The Hertzbleed report comes amid a broader Intel release today that includes three security advisories that cover six vulnerabilities, all of which intel found through its own internal research. Intel has revamped its internal security investigation apparatus in the wake of the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities, bolstering its efforts to find vulnerabilities in its own chips before the security weaknesses are discovered in the wild. Today's advisory includes the MMIO Stale Data Advisory vulnerability that's listed as Intel-SA-00615. This vulnerability requires both firmware and operating system/hypervisor updates to fully rectify the hardware vulnerability. Intel has published a brief overview and a technical deep dive. Finally, the MMIO Undefined Access Advisory covers a hypervisor vulnerability (Intel-SA-00645). Intel has posted guidance for mitigating this vulnerability here.
  20. Musician Name: Avril Ramona Lavigne Birthday / Location: September 27, 1984 (age 37)Belleville, Ontario, Canada Main instrument: Pop punk · pop rock · rock alternativo · post-grunge Musician Picture: Musician Awards & Nominations:- Best Performance: - Other Information: Avril Ramona Lavigne (born September 27, 1984) is a French-Canadian singer-songwriter, often referred to by music critics and publications as the "Queen of Pop-Punk" due to her achievement and impact on the music industry. She is considered one of the main names that contributed to the development of punk-influenced pop music that paved the way for the rise of women in this scenario. Coming from a very strict Christian family, Avril grew up in the country town of Napanee, where she performed in church choirs and talent contests. After participating in a performance by Shania Twain, he went through experiences in music until signing with Arista Records, which released his first debut album, Let Go, in 2002. Preceded by the hit single "Complicated", Let Go achieved great commercial success and worldwide: it was the second best-selling album that year. The albums Under My Skin (2004) and The Best Damn Thing (2007) continued their international success, the latter of which spawned the highest-selling digital song of 2007, "Girlfriend". Lavigne composed "Alice" as the theme for the film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland (2010). Her follow-up studio albums, Goodbye Lullaby (2011), Avril Lavigne (2013) and Head Above Water (2019), performed less notably compared to their predecessors. Her worldwide sales account for more than 40 million albums and 30 million singles, making her the fourth most successful Canadian female artist in this regard. Avril has already received eight Grammy nominations and won nine Juno Awards, in addition to being the first to reach 100 million views on YouTube, with the music video for "Girlfriend". Furthermore, she is noted for having great size and po[CENSORED]rity on the Asian continent, especially in Japan, where her first three studio albums each sold over a million copies. In addition to music, the artist has also been involved in the areas of fashion and perfumery. In 2008, she launched the clothing line Abbey Dawn, while, in 2009, she released the fragrance Black Star, which was followed by Forbidden Rose and Wild Rose. Her most notable works in cinematography were the voice of the character Heather in the animation Over the Hedge and her acting debut in Fast Food Nation - both in 2006. The singer was married twice: first to Deryck Whibley, frontman of Sum 41, and the second with Chad Kroeger, lead singer of Nickelback. Since she was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014, her charity The Avril Lavigne Foundation has also focused on issues related to the infection. Avril Ramona Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984 in Belleville, a Canadian city located in the province of Ontario. Coming from a strictly Christian middle-class family and linked to the Baptist Church, she is the middle daughter of Jean-Claude Lavigne, born in the department French Moselle, with Anglo-Canadian Judith-Rosanne "Judy" Loshaw. Her first name was chosen in reference to the month of April in French. She has two brothers: Matthew, the eldest, and Michelle, the youngest. Her father worked at a telephone company and her mother was a housewife. Her talent was discovered by her mother when she heard her singing the Christian hymn "Jesus Loves Me" at age 2 while walking home from church. Surprised by her daughter's performance, her mother Judy started to encourage her to sing and to call her "bird". Her brothers, however, mocked her vocal abilities and told her that her nostrils would flare up if she kept singing. "My brother used to bang on the wall because I would sing myself to sleep and he thought it was really boring." As a child, she moved with her family to Napanee, an inland city with about five thousand inhabitants. There she received support from her parents regarding the field of music. An amateur musician who played bass in a church band in Kingston, Jean-Claude nurtured his daughter's musical ambitions by converting the family's basement into a studio. In addition, he bought her a microphone, a drum kit, a keyboard and guitars. During this period, she participated in choirs at the town's church and later went on to sing songs by country artists such as Faith Hill and the Dixie Chicks at fairs, cattle shows and local talent contests. As a child, she attended Westdale Park Public School, but her mother transferred her to Cornerstone Christian Academy—a private school located near the family church, Evangel Temple—in fourth grade. About her school life, she reported: "In the beginning, everyone knew me in high school as the singing girl. Everyone was like, 'Ohh yeah, that's the singing girl'. I've been singing all my life. In my last school years, I started skating and hanging out with skaters and punks, they were my crew." In her early teens, she borrowed her father's guitar and taught herself to play it by practicing Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away." Later, she started writing her own songs. A pivotal point in her life came in 1998, the year she won a singing contest hosted by local radio that gave the winner the right to participate in a performance to be performed at the Corel Center by country singer Shania Twain. On the occasion, the two performed "What Made You Say That", a song by Twain, for an audience of approximately 20 thousand people. Increasingly passionate about music, when she turned 14 she was taken by her parents to karaoke sessions. On the other hand, her school performance was poor, as she did not feel motivated to study. Despite this, whenever possible she performed at venues in southern Ontario; until once, while playing at the Lennox Community Theatre, she was spotted by folk musician Stephen Medd, who runs a local music and arts festival. He invited her to contribute to a companion compilation, on which she performed the song "Touch the Sky", included on the 1999 album Quinte Spirit. She then recorded "Temple of Life" and "Two Rivers" for the album My Window. to You, from 2000.
