  1. On Saturday, Chinese computer manufacturer PowerLeader launched a 'new' processor and compact desktop PC. During the press conference, PowerLeader talked about its first generation Powerstar P3-01105 CPU, featuring the "storm core" architecture, described as "extremely high performance," x86 compatible, and offering great support for Windows. And so it should, as it looks very much like a rebranded Intel Core i3-10105(F) Comet Lake CPU with 4C / 8T. In Chinese tech news media coverage, such as at ITHome, there was no hint given about a partnership with Intel on this rebrand. Instead, we have a quote from a PowerLeader execs talking about how the first gen Powerstar chips were "specially designed for daily desktop users, and are suitable for government, education, energy, industry, finance, medical care, games, and retail, etc." As well as the CPU, a new compact tower PC dubbed the PC PT620P, featuring the Powerstar P3-01105 CPU, was unveiled. A statement about this PC's capabilities provided a small hint that the Powerstar P3-01105 wasn't entirely domestic. According to the machine translation of a PowerLeader exec's statement, the new CPU "has extremely high performance, which is several times higher than that of the domestic CPU." There, it was admitted that this isn't a domestic CPU. One of the last official blurb worth reporting is that PowerLeader says the CPU will be launched shortly, targeting annual CPU sales of 1.5 million units. It's an Intel Chip, Sherlock In response to harukaze5719's Tweet about this Powerstar P3-01105 CPU, another Twitterer pointed out that what we are looking at is almost certainly an Intel Core i3-10105(F) Comet Lake CPU. The following clues convincingly point to this: Physical lugged heatspreader design, and other physical characteristics Physical substrate design is identical, as far as we can see Silk screen print format on the IHS is the same The PowerLeader processor name slightly jumbles Intel's: compare "10105" and "01105" They are both marked as capable of a "3.70GHZ" base clock Last but not least, the QR code on the upper right of the Powerstar P3-01105 PCB is said to match Intel's. There seems to be a weight of evidence pointing to a rebrand, but we await further announcements and third-party tests to ensure it. So please stay tuned for when the truth comes out. So, why would PowerLeader rebrand an Intel Core i3-10105? All we can find about the underlying reason for this sleight-of-hand with branding is that Chinese tech firms can benefit from attractive subsidies by developing and launching "domestic products." If that is true, it also explains how Innosilicon touted its Fantasy graphics cards as "domestic desktop GPUs," but later, we saw UK-based ImgTec confirm that they used the PowerVR architecture.

  4. A former employee of OpenSea, the world's largest marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), used inside knowledge of which assets would be featured on its homepage to make "free money," a prosecutor said on Monday as an insider trading trial wound to a close. The charges against Nathaniel Chastain, a former OpenSea product manager, were the first in a series of high-profile cases related to digital assets launched by the US Attorney's office in Manhattan last year. Prosecutors have called it the first criminal insider trading case involving such assets. Prosecutor Thomas Burnett said in his closing argument that Chastain chose which NFTs to feature, and then profited illegally by selling his tokens shortly thereafter. He made upwards of $50,000 (nearly Rs. 40 lakh) off such trades before getting caught in September 2021, Burnett said. "He was using OpenSea's information like his own piggy bank," Burnett told the jury. "It was as good as free money." Chastain's lawyers were expected to give their closing argument later on Monday. They have said that his actions were not insider trading, and that the information he accessed was not OpenSea's property and had no inherent value to the company. Chastain's lawyers have also said OpenSea did not start banning employees from buying or selling featured collections or creators until Chastain's last day, in September 2021. The company did not treat such information as confidential while Chastain worked there, his lawyer David Miller has argued. Chastain faces one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering. His trial before US District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan began last week. The case could have broader implications for assets that do not fit into existing regulations preventing investment advisers, brokers and others from trading on material nonpublic information, legal experts have said.
  5. Almost a decade ago Turing Prize winner and now former Google employee Dr. Geoffrey Hinton was known to enthusiastically exclaim among his AI students, "I understand how the brain works now!" Now, however, the "Godfather of AI" has walked away from Google -- and he's more apt to be heard desperately ringing AI alarm bells. In an exit interview with The New York Times(opens in new tab), Hinton expressed deep concerns about the rapid expansion of AI, saying "it is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things.” A direct line connects Hinton's decades-long pioneering work in neural networks to the chatbots (ChatGPT, Google Bard, Bing AI) of today. His breakthroughs more than a decade ago led Google to bring him on board to develop next-gen deep-learning systems that could help computers interpret images, text, and speech in much the way humans do. Speaking to Wired in 2014(opens in new tab), Hinton's enthusiasm was clear: "I get very excited when we discover a way of making neural networks better -- and when that’s closely related to how the brain works." A very different Hinton spoke to The New York Times(opens in new tab) this week, to outline all the ways AI could run humanity right off the rails. Here are the key takeaways: Rush to compete means guardrails fly off While companies like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI often profess that they're taking a slow and cautious approach to AI development and chatbot deployment, Dr. Hinton told The New York Times that he's worried the reality is that increased competition is resulting in a less cautious approach. And he's clearly right: Earlier this year we witnessed Google rushing out a not-ready-for-primetime Bard to meet the surprise appearance of Microsoft's ChatGPT-powered Bing AI. Can these companies balance a market imperative to stay ahead of the competition (Google staying Number 1 in search, for example) with the greater good? Dr. Hinton is now unconvinced. Loss of truth Dr. Hinton worries about the proliferation of AI leading to a flood of fake online content. Of course, that's less a future concern than a real-time one as people are now regularly fooled by AI music that fakes the vocal gifts of the masters (including dead ones), AI news images(opens in new tab) being treated as real, and generative images winning photography competitions(opens in new tab). With the power and pervasiveness of deep fakes, few videos we watch today can be taken at face value. Still, Dr. Hinton may be right that this is just the beginning. Unless Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and others do something about it, we won't be able to trust anything we see or even hear. A ruined job market Dr. Hinton warned The Times that AI is set to take on more than just tasks we don't want to do. Many of us have taken ChatBots like Bard and ChatGPT for a spin at writing presentations, proposals, and even programming. Most of the output is not ready for primetime, but some of it is or is at least passable. There are right now dozens of AI-generated novels for sale on Amazon, and the screenwriters union (Writers Guild of America) in the US has expressed concern that if they do not agree on a new contract, studios might outsource their jobs to AI. And while there haven't been widespread layoffs linked directly to AI, the growth of these powerful tools is leading some to rethink their workforces. Unexpected and unwanted behavior One of the hallmarks of neural nets and deep learning AI is that it can use vast swaths of data to teach itself. One of the unintended consequences of this human-brain-like power is that AI can learn lessons you never anticipated. A self-determining AI might AI on those lessons. Dr. Hinton said an AI that can not only program but then run its own programming is especially concerning, especially as it relates to unintended outcomes. AI will be smarter than us Current AI often appears smarter than humans, but with its propensity for hallucinations and manufactured facts, it's far from matching our greatest minds. Dr. Hinton believes the day when AI does outsmart us is fast approaching, and certainly faster than he originally anticipated. AI may be able to fake empathy – see its recent trial as a source for medical advice(opens in new tab) – but that's not the same as true human empathy. Super-smart systems that can figure everything out but without consideration of how their choices might impact humans are deeply concerning. While Dr. Hinton's warnings are in stark contrast to his original enthusiasm for the tech sector he all but invented, something he told Wired about the work on human-brain-mimicking AI systems back in 2014 now sounds oddly prescient: "We ceased to be the lunatic fringe. We’re now the lunatic core."
  6. Graphics Card modder and YouTuber Paul Gomes, recently published a video where he converted an RTX 3060 8GB, one of the best GPUs, into its faster and higher capacity RTX 3060 12GB sibling. The mod involved adding two more memory ICs to the PCB and adjusting a few capacitors to enable the necessary memory channels. In the end, the GPU saw a notable performance increase with the 12GB configuration. Last year, Nvidia quietly released a second iteration of the RTX 3060 to the desktop market known as the RTX 3060 8GB. This model downgraded the memory configuration from 12GB operating on a 192-bit wide bus, to 8GB operating on a 128-bit bus, presumably in an effort to reduce cost. But despite this, current GPU prices for the 8GB version aren't, in general, any cheaper than the 12GB. That's despite the fact that the 8GB is noticeably slower than the 12GB version due to its reduced memory bandwidth. Aside from the mod adding two more memory ICs to the RTX 3060 8GB's PCB, a few transistors need to be mani[CENSORED]ted and the BIOS needs to be replaced so the new modules can be recognized. Gomes first adds two more ICs by preparing two of the four blank slots on the PCB, then installs the ICs by pressurizing the contact points between the chip and PCB, and heating them up. Next Gomes melts some of the resistors, controlling the card's memory system, so the GPU can detect the new memory modules. Then he installs a new BIOS on the RTX 3060 that supports the new modules. Presumably, Gomes is utilizing a BIOS from the RTX 3060 12GB version of the card. Performance was noticeably better with the additional memory ICs, even in situations where the additional 4GB of VRAM was not being utilized. Gomes tested the newly modified GPU in Unigine's Superposition, and The Last of Us Part 1, where performance went up by 22% and 12% respectively. The Last of Us Part 1 in particular, saw VRAM usage jump from 7.6GB on the original 8GB configuration to 10.29GB with the modified 12GB configuration. Modifying an RTX 3060 8GB with 12GB of VRAM is probably not the best way to get RTX 3060 12GB performance, especially when both cards cost the same (at least in the United States). But the mod is definitely cool to see and shows how customizable Nvidia's GPUs really are if you have the right equipment and the right GPU model (with different BIOSes featuring more than one supported memory configuration) to play with.

  12. Google Pixel Fold is expected to launch soon in the market. It is being speculated that the company may unveil the Pixel Fold at the upcoming Google I/O, scheduled for May 2023. However, Google is yet to confirm any detail officially. However, despite no official announcement, there has been a number of rumours about the purported smartphone. A recent leak by a po[CENSORED]r tipster, displaying the design renders of the Pixel Fold, has provided new insights into the smartphone's cover design. The images shared by tipster Evan Blass (Twitter @evleaks) on a personal Twitter account, via 9to5Google, appear to be taken from a press render that the company could use for marketing. The leaked image shows the Pixel Fold's outer display with a centrally aligned punch hole, the Pixel Launcher home screen with themed icons, Google's stock apps, and a blurred At a Glance widget. Additionally, the smartphone appears to have a wider aspect ratio and a thinner hinge. In the shared images, the Pixel Fold seems to be a lighter black colour variant. Previously, the US pricing and full specifications of the Google Pixel Fold were leaked via a YouTube video. The phone is tipped to cost $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,47,000) for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant and $1,919 (roughly Rs. 1,57,500) for the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage option. The handset is said to be available for pre-orders from May 10 via Google Store. Google Pixel Fold specifications (expected) The Pixel Fold will reportedly sport a 7.6-inch inner display with a 1,840 x 2,208 pixels resolution, a 6:5 aspect ratio, and a 120Hz refresh rate. 13. Windows 11 just got a new preview build in the Beta channel that brings in some important changes for widgets, including making the widgets panel a sizeable chunk bigger. Preview build 22624.1680 introduces what Microsoft is calling an ‘evolved widgets board’, and the main move here is to give the widgets board an extra column of real-estate. Instead of being two columns wide, it now sprawls over three columns, as long as the device running Windows 11 has a display that can support the additional column. On top of that, there are ‘zones’ to separate the widgets themselves – on the left – and content from the user’s tailored feed (on the right). Not every tester will see this change to begin with, mind, as it’s rolling out in stages. On top of this, the preview build also treats folks to animated icons for widgets on the taskbar. These are only working for weather and finance icons right now, and in the former case for example, when rain clouds are displayed, you get a brief animation of the rain falling. Those are the main changes in this beta release, along with some important fine-tuning of how app defaults work in Windows 11. Specifically, this brings in a new system Microsoft has previously blogged about that employs a Settings deep link URI (uniform resource identifier). This allows software devs to take users straight to the right place in Settings whenever an app wants to be made the default for any given file format (we discuss this further here – note that app pinning hasn’t arrived yet, though). The full list of work contained in build 22624 is available in Microsoft’s blog post(opens in new tab) introducing the preview build, as ever, so check that out if you want to see all the nitty gritty details. Analysis: Microsoft is proceeding cautiously with this one The larger widgets board was seen in testing last month (in the Canary channel), so it seems that Microsoft is signalling its intention to move forward with the bigger three-column panel, given it has now progressed to the Beta channel. Clearly, you get more space for content here which is, on the face of it, a welcome move for those who use widgets in Windows 11. Sadly, the widgets themselves take up one column, and the feed content takes up the two columns on the right, so the expansion is putting more emphasis on the news feed side of the equation. As Microsoft puts it, you might want a “high-value break with your personalized feed”, but rather, you may prefer to see more widgets. Maybe Microsoft will tweak the balance of these different zones, as it calls them, going forward. This is a change Microsoft is clearly a bit tentative about, because as noted above, the rollout is only happening for a limited number of testers in the Beta channel to begin with. The idea is to keep an eye on feedback and “see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone”, which is Microsoft’s standard approach when it’s not so sure on a feature, or whether it might rub some people up the wrong way. As well as this bigger panel and animated icons for widgets – those look pretty nifty, we reckon – Microsoft could have another major change in the pipeline, too. Rumor has it that Windows 11 could eventually see the ability to drag widgets onto the desktop, should you wish to do so.
  14. What's better than a fast graphics card? One that's fast and power efficient at the same time. Even if you own one of the best graphics cards, you might not always need its full firepower. An independent developer, simonmacer, has created the Nvidia Power Management(opens in new tab) (NVPMM) software, a third-party utility for advanced users to manage their GeForce graphics card's power. It's not an official tool from Nvidia, so users should proceed cautiously. The NVPMM taps into Nvidia's System Management Interface (SMI), a command line tool that allows users to manage and monitor GeForce, Quadro, Tesla, and GRID products. Therefore, NVPMM provides a GUI for consumers not into the command-line interface. The GeForce control panel already offers a primitive power management mode and options to limit frame rates on the Nvidia graphics cards. Even Windows 11 has a few options to limit the power draw of graphics cards. However, NVPMM delivers more options at a granular level. NVPMM's feature set includes creating individual power profiles, defining power limits per application, and adaptive control of the graphics card's memory. The utility also comes with a basic performance state monitor. Obviously, the software cannot unlock power limits on GeForce graphics cards. Instead, it sticks to the maximum and minimum range enabled on the graphics card. However, the developer states that the GeForce RTX 4090 has more range than the other Ada Lovelace-based SKUs. The software also features what the developer calls the Power Group Limit Management (PGLM) feature. It allows users to set power limits for three groups (A, B, and C) and place applications into different groups for the effects to take place. For instance, you can establish a power limit of 320W for Group A and put the Cyberpunk 2077 executable in that group. Then, once the NVPMM detects Cyberpunk 2077 is running, it'll limit the graphics card to 320W. Exiting the game will cause the settings to revert to stock. Users can freely play with power limits on GeForce graphics cards. However, since the settings are saved on the software level, they reset after a system restart. It's the same behavior with manual overclocks where software such as MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X1 must apply the settings after each restart. It's identical to NVPMM. The application must be installed and executed for it to apply the user's power limit profile when the system boots into the operating system. Some users on the Guru3D forums(opens in new tab) have reported that Norton and Windows Defender have flagged NVPMM as a trojan. However, they could be false positives due to the nature of what the software does. Version 2.5 passed the Eset Antivirus test, but three vendors from Virus Total(opens in new tab) flagged the executable as malicious.

  22. Microsoft is testing a way of encouraging its users to buy more space in its cloud storage app, OneDrive, in Windows 11 when they're about to shut down their PC. It could potentially be the final straw for some users. As we get closer and closer to Black Friday 2022, many of us are starting to see deals and adverts that are on our televisions, smartphones, and more, and you may be considering an upgrade to your PC, Mac, or tablet. On one hand, seeing Microsoft and Apple's latest product lineup is a tempting prospect, but OneDrive is nowhere near as exciting. It's blunders like this that can harm a brand and tempt users to move to a different, less ad-laden operating system, such as macOS. However, OneDrive isn't the only ad that has been sighted, with prompts to make a Microsoft Account also appearing for some users, and it could be a bad precedent for Microsoft and Windows 11 in the future. We've been here before with Microsoft - it was caught testing ads in File Explorer before clarifying that this was an experiment that accidentally rolled out to more users than was intended. Yet here we are again with another ad popping up in Windows 11. Granted, advertisements help to fund countless companies in their growth, and when done well, they can inform and educate users. But seeing prompts as you're about to shut down your PC gives the impression that you're at the 'are you sure you want to unsubscribe?' stage. It feels like the company is trying one last-ditch attempt to convince you to buy the product. Yes, Apple has also been faltering lately with baffling gambling ads in its App Store, but Microsoft's attempt feels more direct, in a place you'll find yourself frequently visiting if you routinely shut down your Windows device. No doubt Microsoft will remove this experiment again as before, but it's looking likely that we're going to be seeing a Windows version in the near future where ads will be across the operating system, and that will not only hinder Microsoft's prized platform but also its brand - even for users who have stayed with Windows for decades.

With the imminent arrival of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4080 on November 16, some of Nvidia’s AIB partners have already begun releasing released product pages of its GeForce RTX 4080 models, including Asus, Gigabyte, and Galax. Unfortunately, not all of the AIB partner listings are here, but the few we have should give us a good insight into the GeForce RTX 4080’s form factor. Also, expect the GeForce 4080 to appear in our list of best graphics cards once the Ada Lovelace graphics card launches. It’s worth mentioning that we are discussing the GeForce RTX 4080 16GB variant when we mean GeForce RTX 4080. With Nvidia’s dismissal of the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB for good, the other 16GB terminology is no longer required. Though, some AIB partners appear to be still using that badging anyway to save on e-waste so they can keep using the GeForce RTX 4080 16GB boxes they created before the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB got axed. The GeForce RTX 4080 is the runner-up to the GeForce RTX 4090, featuring 9,728 CUDA cores and a max boost clock of 2.51 GHz. Memory specs include 16GB of GDDR6X memory operating on a 256-bit wide bus. The GPU’s reference power rating is 320W, which comes from a 16-pin power connector. Asus Asus has two RTX 4080 versions, including the RTX 4080 ROG Strix(opens in new tab) and the RTX 4080 TUF Gaming.(opens in new tab) Both models are identical to their RTX 4090 counterparts, including the cooler's design language and the card's physical size. The ROG model retains the same red, black and blue theme and features a matte black GPU shroud and silver text. The TUF does the same, with a grey finish and an RGB light bar to the top right. It appears Asus re-used the RTX 4090 coolers on its RTX 4080s. For future RTX 4080 Asus owners, this will be great for overclocking since the cooler keeps the GPU core and memory exceptionally cool. The only downside is the card's size, which will make case compatibility an issue. But hopefully, we should get lower-end Asus RTX 4080 versions - such as the Dual series, that will address the 'compact' PC market. Gigabyte Gigabyte's listings are more attractive, with six different variants, including Eagle, Aero, and a full-blown water block version lacking from the RTX 4090 variants. The five SKUs include the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 Eagle, Eagle OC, RTX 4080 Aero OC, RTX 4080 Gaming OC, Aorus RTX 4080 Xtreme Waterforce (AIO version), and the RTX 4080 Xtreme Waterforce WB. The RTX 4080 Eagle variants represent Gigabyte's budget RTX 4080 graphics cards and feature a newly re-design aesthetic. Gone is the jagged-edged cooler shroud, replaced by a standard rectangular shroud design featuring a grey color scheme accompanied by blue and white colored accents. Sadly, the card is not that small, measuring in at just under four PCIe slots in thickness, with a length of 342mm. On the other hand, the height is quite large, at 40mm in size - well above that of the PCIe slots, so that that case compatibility will be problematic on smaller ATX, microATX, and Mini-ITX chassis. The RTX 4080 Aero shares characteristics similar to the Eagle, taking on the same general form factor and triple-fan cooler design. But identical to previous Aero cards, the color scheme has been changed to white and silver. In addition, the card shroud features a matte white finish and two silver accents in between the three fans in the middle. Like the Asus models, Gigabyte's RTX 4080 Gaming and Gaming OC video cards share the exact cooler dimensions as their RTX 4090 counterparts. The GPUs also share the same cooler design, with a matte grey finish on the shroud and RGB ring lights inside the triple fan cooler layout. Again, it almost seems like Gigabyte is putting RTX 4090 coolers on the 4080 versions in this case, but the 4080 gaming OC is different - about slightly. The width is 0.2mm shorter (yes, that is what the spec sheet says), but the 4080 Gaming OC is 2mm longer for some reason. There's nothing to note about the water block versions other than that you can get the RTX 4080 in both a water block version and an AIO variant. Differences between the 4090 versions are minimal at best. Galax Galax's RTX 4080s feature an ST and SG model, with the SG versions representing a factory model. The Galax RTX 4080 ST/SG features a black color scheme with a heavy focus on RGB lighting. The shroud sports matte and glossy black finishes, making the RGB lighting on the card stand out. The illumination is everywhere on the card; it's between the triple fan cooler design, on the edges and the sides. In addition, it features design queues from a bolt of lightning. Compared to the RTX 4090 models, the RTX 4080 versions are identical aesthetically (like the Asus models), but there are notable size differences. The 4090 models are 74mm thick, while the 4080 models are 66mm thick. As a result, they are making the 4080s slightly slimmer. So it seems from these three brands that the GeForce RTX 4080 overall will not be much smaller than the RTX 4090, despite its drastically different power consumption rating. It should improve the GPU's overclocking prowess, but these cards will still share the same case compatibility problems as the RTX 4090.
