  8. An update coming to Microsoft Teams will help prevent unwanted chats from external users in an effort to boost security in its video conferencing suite. The entry’s(opens in new tab) title reads: “External access chat invitation flow for managed organizations” which suggests that, for now at least, this change is likely only coming to business users. As ever, the company keeps information regarding future products close to its chest. However, the description gives a little detail into what we can expect: “When receiving a new one-on-one chat from an external user, Teams users will now see an invitation to accept or block the external user. This also provides the ability to block external users at any point, which revokes access to presence and incoming messages.” Block external messages with Microsoft Teams The entry added that the feature is expected to go live with general availability due at some point in August 2022, extending to desktop, mobile and web platforms. With more and more businesses turning to online collaboration tools, this move is set to make presentations with external guests a lot more slick, helping users to eliminate unwanted messages and maintain focus, while boosting privacy. Also part of the company’s roadmap destined for an August arrival will be the ability to open pop-ou content in a new window, an update that will help users of dual-monitor setups to view the video call and shared documents, for example, in separate windows. With most video conferencing suites no offering some form of chat blocking, Microsoft hopes this new feature will give it the one-up it needs in terms of regulating external messages.
  9. According to user feedback on Reddit(opens in new tab), CyberPower’s CP1500PFCLCD and CP1350PFCLCD uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes) can potentially cause a fire hazard. Unverified analysis seems to point the finger at a specific adhesive that may eventually become conductive, can short out some components, and could cause a fire. The current concern about CyberPower’s units first arose in January on the Canadian RedFlagDeals(opens in new tab) forum. The thread starter cited a YouTube video(opens in new tab) from a year ago where computer engineer Mark Furneaux discovered that at least the first and second revisions of the CP1500PFCLCD and CP1350PFCLCD used the everyday yellow glue. The adhesive, which can come in other colors, is common among electronics as manufacturers typically employ it in their products to glue bulky components down to the PCB to prevent their movement. The usage of yellow glue in electronics dates back to the 1970s. The problem is that the adhesive seemingly grows corrosive and conductive over time. In addition, the lifespan of the glue varies and depends on the environment’s temperature. When the color turns from yellow to brown or black, it’s a sign that the adhesive has changed its properties. A couple of RedFlagDeals forum users reported that their units stopped working but didn’t provide any explanations on how the UPSes died. However, once the news made it to Reddit(opens in new tab) and Hacker News(opens in new tab), more user reports of the failure came to light. One Redditor (CP1000PFCLCD) provided a video(opens in new tab) of smoke coming out of his unit shortly after replacing its battery as per CyberPower’s recommendation. It appears the units catching fire isn't entirely uncommon among CyberPower UPSes. Multiple user comments on Amazon(opens in new tab) (some dating from 2017) claim that the CyberPower units are a fire risk. One owner reported seeing smoke from the unit and a burning plastic smell, while another spoke of hearing a bang before the UPS went bad. CyberPower Responds We reached out to CyberPower and a company representative told us that it cannot identify the problem from the Reddit video due to the lack of information. However, CyberPower recommends that the affected user or users send in their units to identify the root of the problem. Regarding the yellow glue, CyberPower ensured us that it has thoroughly tested the adhesive, and the results fall in line with industry and UL standards, deeming it safe for usage in the brand’s UPSes. The CP1500PFCLCD and CP1350PFCLCD have been around for a while, so they’re on the third revision now. Thus far, the user reports correspond to the first and second revisions; it’s uncertain if the latest revision utilizes the same yellow glue. At any rate, it’s not likely a widespread issue as there have been positive reports from other owners with CyberPower units, some with multiple years of operation under their belts. Nonetheless, CyberPower should investigate the claims, since obviously, the potential to start fires, is a serious matter. You can read CyberPower’s official statement in response to our questions below: We are aware of the video. We take all product inquiries regarding appropriate operation and safety seriously. All CyberPower products and components are UL listed and tested for safety. More broadly, it is our intent to bring safe, high-quality power protection products to our customers around the world. In the case of the video provided, it is not possible to exactly confirm the user’s claim as it does not offer full explanation of usage, analysis of failure, any testing results, or condition of the unit. Currently, we are unaware if this user has contacted us directly or opened a case with one of our technical agents and welcome them to do so as a complete analysis is the only means to validate root cause. Regarding comments about the adhesive, we have thoroughly tested the adhesives we use, and our results are aligned with industry and UL standards. We conducted a full laboratory study of the adhesive being used in our products and deem it safe for this application. We encourage all CyberPower customers with product troubleshooting, questions, or concerns to contact our Technical Support team at 1-877-297-6937. Our team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for product support and assistance. Sincerely, Cyber Power Systems (USA), Inc.

  15. Microsoft is quietly rolling back its decision to block Office macros by default, following an earlier announcement that it would indeed implement this on a security basis. The tech giant began blocking macros by default in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Visio in February 2022, claiming the move would make its apps “more secure” in an effort to “keep more users safe including home users and information workers in managed organizations. However the move has already been met with hostility by Windows users amid worries that it could actually raise security risks. Microsoft security reversal Among the first to report on this change were Microsoft customers, turning to online channels to express their dissatisfaction. Angela Robertson, an Office 365 Principal GPM for Identity and Security, has since responded: “Based on feedback received, a rollback has started. An update about the rollback is in progress. I apologize for any inconvenience of the rollback starting before the update about the change was made available.” Several customers have complained about the poor communication, not to mention the effect this could have on small-scale businesses: “Your standard SMB and even mid-sized businesses are going to implode if this gets fully implemented in it's current form,” says one customer. They continue: "You seem to be catering to enterprises now that have very large teams of people to manage your products, and that's simply not the case for most of the user base. It needs to be simplified before it's released, and moreso, it needs to be effectively communicated.” As yet, the company is yet to make an official announcement with regards to the retraction of the security feature it had only recently implemented. In a reply to the complaints, Microsoft said, “We appreciate the feedback we've received so far, and we're working to make improvements in this experience. We'll provide another update when we're ready to release again to Current Channel. Thank you.”
  16. [Editor’s Note: After publishing this story, an AMD representative contacted us via email, pointing out that the 5000 WX-series is actually unlocked for overclocking, contrary to the statements below. The company also provided a link to public documents about Threadripper 5000 WX that states, in part, " Select WRX80 motherboards from our ODM partners will support both memory and CPU overclocking for users looking to push the limits of their workstation even further.” The original story follows below.] Last month, master overclocker and YouTuber SkatterBencher put up a video showcasing an eye-watering 4.6 to 4.8GHz all-core overclock on a Zen 3 64-core engineering sample featuring an unlocked multiplier for overclocking. With overclocking officially disabled on AMD's production Ryzen Threadripper 5000WX Pro CPUs, this will be one of the only times we'll ever see what AMD's Zen 3 silicon can accomplish on the HEDT platform. SkatterBench's video is quite detailed, with a runtime of almost an hour to showcase five different ways to overclock this 64-core CPU, including a mix of PBO tuning, the use of AMD's Curve Optimizer, and manual overclocking. Cooling was achieved with a custom loop, so no exotic cooling was used like liquid nitrogen. To extract the eye-watering 4.8GHz overclock, SkatterBencher used a full manual overclock with per-CCX frequency tuning and tuned for specific benchmark applications only instead of targeting a completely stable CPU overclocking. With this in mind, the overclock was achieved in 3DMark, with CCD4 being the highest quality silicon in the chip and reaching an amazing 4.825GHz on those four cores in the CCD. The rest of the core clusters could not hit 4.8GHz, but they were able to get close with a combination of either 4.6GHz or 4.7GHz. The 3DMark scores reflect the incredibly high core clocks well, with a whopping 32,950 points on the CPU core alone. This puts the prototype chip miles ahead of the record-holding score on the 3DMark website, with a score of 27,202 points. It's a shame AMD did not unlock its production-ready Ryzen Threadripper 5000 Pro CPUs with overclocking support. Compared to the previous generation, Threadripper 5000 has a noticeable bump in frequency headroom. With Ryzen 3000 Threadripper, if you wanted to get close to 4.8GHz, you would need to use exotic cooling such as liquid nitrogen.

  22. Being left confused by a Microsoft Teams message in a foreign language may soon no longer be an issue thanks to a new update coming to the service. The video conferencing platform is working on introducing so-called "intelligent translation" for Microsoft Teams Mobile users. Coming to Android and iOS users soon, the feature will mean that users will be able to quickly translate messages in a foreign language, making sure there's never any delay or errors. Microsoft Teams Mobile translation In the Microsoft 365 roadmap entry(opens in new tab) for the new feature, the company notes that the tool will now, "prompt you to translate messages that are not in your language". There's no mention of what exact languages are covered by the new feature, but it's likely that a full range will be on offer. Microsoft notes that the feature should launch in August 2022, meaning it's just a few weeks away for Android and iOS(opens in new tab) users alike. The news is the latest step forward for Microsoft Teams and its translation tools as it looks to help users connect across the world. The company first announced plans to introduce real-time "Inline" translation for mobile Teams users back in May 2021 to help boost communication across the globe. Back in March 2022, the company adopted Z-Code, a new AI technology that significantly improves the quality of production translation models. Z-Code supports the creation of AI systems that are capable of speaking, seeing, hearing and understanding, and has already been rolled into the company's Microsoft Translator software and several other Azure AI services. Microsoft Teams was able to introduce another form of real-time translation functionality to desktop video meetings earlier this year with a new addition giving access to a large network of professional interpreters who dial into meetings on request. Once a session has begun, Microsoft Teams users can switch between the original audio feed and the interpreter’s translation via a drop-down menu.
  23. Last week AMD announced plans to start offering its Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX-series workstation-grade processors at retail later this year. And today the first pictures of their packages were published. The images may imply that AMD's latest workstation CPUs with up to 64 cores are coming to retail rather sooner than later. AMD's Threadripper Pro 5000WX-series will come in black boxes with a window, according to pictures of boxes published by @momomo_us, who tends to find information at various retailers using sophisticated searching methods and is usually very accurate with his findings. We do not know whether the images come direct from AMD or one of its retail partners. The most surprising part is perhaps the fact that the boxes no longer carry the Ryzen brand, but only the Ryzen logotype and the Threadripper Pro name. AMD is certainly not dropping the word Ryzen from the official name of the product — it is still called AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX, but the art on the box will focus on the Threadripper Pro brand. AMD's Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX-series family includes five processors with 64, 32, 24, 16, or 12 cores, as well as up to 256MB of L3 cache. These CPUs are based on AMD's Zen 3 microarchitecture and will support up to 1TB of DDR4-3200 memory using eight channels. The processors are compatible with motherboards featuring a WRX8 CPU socket. AMD's top-of-the-range 64-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX carries a recommended price of $6,499, whereas 32-core 5975WX and 24-core 5965WX CPUs cost $3,299 and $2,399, respectively.
