  1. Windows 11 has a new preview build, this time in the Release Preview channel, which introduces a whole bunch of changes – both good and bad. Most of this stuff has already been seen in earlier test builds (Canary, Dev, or Beta channels), and Windows 11 build 22621.1926 (KB5027303) represents all these features progressing towards release. Now that they’re in Release Preview, this is the final step before these various features turn up in the full version of Windows 11 at some point in the near(ish) future. So, let’s get the bad news out of the way first, namely that Microsoft has announced in the blog post for this preview build that adverts (which the company calls ‘badging’ – we’ll come back to that) on the Start menu are moving towards a broader rollout. Microsoft explains: “This update expands the roll out of notification badging for Microsoft accounts on the Start menu. A Microsoft account is what connects Windows to your Microsoft apps. The account backs up all your data and helps you to manage your subscriptions.” The company adds: “This feature gives you quick access to important account-related notifications.” With that out of the way, the better news that caught our eye for gamers is that improved mouse performance is on the way. Microsoft tells us that when using a mouse with a high polling rate – so any of the contenders for best gaming mouse in other words, designed for accurate and precise mousing – you’ll now get better performance. This is thanks to any stuttering being reduced for these kinds of mice, so that’s a big thumbs-up there. Another interesting point to note with this preview build is a broad assertion that: “This update affects the reliability of Windows. It improves after you update the OS.” Anything that ushers in better stability must be a good thing too, naturally. Analysis: an ominous sign It’s great to see the improvement for high polling rate gaming mice, which will help not just for shooters – where you might typically think accuracy is crucial, and of course, it is – but also for, say, real-time strategy games. The ability to smoothly mouse around and quickly and precisely select units, for example, can’t be underestimated. Whatever game you play, smoother and more accurate mouse movement is a major plus point. What’s bugging us here is the continued push with badging in the Start menu. Badging is a term Microsoft employs which basically translates to light-touch advertising. Yes, the company might argue these are simply nudges to help you sort out various elements of your computing life related to Windows, but really, they’re thinly veiled ads to use Microsoft products and services. In this case, the cajoling is to push you towards signing up for a Microsoft Account, with Windows 11 telling you about the security (and other) benefits of doing so in these notifications which appear in the Start menu. The expanded rollout of this badging previously happened in the Dev channel, but the fact that it has carried forward to the final preview stage before the release version of Windows 11 is rather ominous. This further progression of the rollout in testing suggests that this is something Microsoft is determined to forge ahead with. If that does indeed play out, we can only hope that Microsoft gives users an option to disable this kind of ‘help’ feature (but we aren’t holding our breath on that score).
  2. Intel today announced it has agreed to sell an approximately 20% stake in IMS Nanofabrication to Bain Capital, a private equity firm, valuing IMS at approximately $4.3 billion. Intel first invested in IMS in 2019 and acquired the Vienna, Austria-based business in 2015. IMS makes important chip-making tools, and works specifically on multi-beam mask writing, which has been helpful for leading-edge semiconductor nodes using extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV). IMS will continue to be led by chief executive officer Dr. Elmar Platzgummer and will operate as a standalone subsidiary. "The advancement of lithography is critical to driving continued progress in the semiconductor industry, and mask writing plays a central role in the industry’s transition to new patterning technologies, such as high-NA EUV," said Matt Poirier, senior vice president of corporate development at Intel in a press release. "Bain Capital’s investment and partnership will provide IMS with increased independence and bring strategic perspective to help accelerate the next phase of lithography technology innovation, ultimately benefitting the ecosystem as a whole." Intel suggests that the "increased independence" will help fast-track more innovation in lithography and that it will ultimately help the "ecosystem as a whole" by fostering collaboration across the industry. Intel's sale of the minority stake is expected to close in the third quarter of 2023. This year, IMS is expected to launch MBMW-301, a fourth-generation multi-beam mask writer. Later today, Intel is expected to provide updates on its internal foundry plans. It's unclear if this announcement was dropped because it will have an effect on this news. Intel's stock was down slightly in morning trading.

  8. OnePlus has yet to officially start teasing fans about its upcoming Nord series smartphone, but a new post on its community forum seems to have inadvertently released some information about the same. The OnePlus Nord 3 is expected to be the successor to the OnePlus Nord 2T 5G, which was launched in India last year as a mid-range smartphone. While there have been unofficial reports about the phone arriving in India in July, there's now an official post confirming the launch. OnePlus recently put out a post for its “The Lab” campaign that basically lets tech enthusiasts review its handsets ahead of an official launch. The post finally confirms that the phone will be called the OnePlus Nord 3. It also explains that those who join the program will need to submit reviews of the shared handsets by July, which is when the reviews will go live. OnePlus did not give out a specific date. As a part of its Lab program OnePlus will only be hand-picking six users to review its upcoming Nord product. The OnePlus Nord 3, as per a previous report was expected to be released in June. The report also contained leaked images of what was said to be the OnePlus Nord 3 along with its packaging. According to a more recent report, the OnePlus Nord 3 was spotted with a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC on a Geekbench website, that also suggested other key specifications like the presence of a variant with 16GB of RAM. The phone managed a score of 1,153 points and 3,180 points in Geekbench's single and multi-core tests respectively in a test conducted on June 8. The phone could be a rebadged version of the OnePlus Ace 2V, which was launched in China earlier this year. The smartphone has a 6.74-inch 2.5D AMOLED display with a full-HD+ resolution. It gets three rear cameras including a 64-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. A 16-megapixel camera is in charge of selfies. The phone offers up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. There's a 5,000mAh battery that supports up to 80W wired charging.
  9. Meta – the tech titan formerly known as Facebook – desperately wants to take pole position at the forefront of AI research, but things aren’t exactly going to plan. As reported by Gizmochina, Meta lost a third of its AI research staff in 2022, many of whom cited burnout or lack of faith in the company’s leadership as their reasons for departing. An internal survey from earlier this year showed that just 26% of employees expressed confidence in Meta’s direction as a business. CEO Mark Zuckerberg hired French computer scientist and roboticist Yann LeCun to lead Meta’s AI efforts back in 2013, but in more recent times Meta has visibly struggled to keep up with the rapid pace of AI expansion demonstrated by competing platforms like ChatGPT and Google Bard. LeCun was notably not among the invitees to the White House’s recent Companies at the Frontier of Artificial Intelligence Innovation summit. That’s not to say that Meta is failing completely in the AI sphere; recent reveals like a powerful AI music creator and a speech-generation tool too dangerous to release to the public show that the Facebook owner isn’t exactly sitting on its hands when it comes to AI development. So why is it still lagging behind? Change of direction The clue’s in the name: remember back in 2021, when the then-ubiquitous Facebook underwent a total rebrand to become ‘Meta’? At the time, it was supposed to herald a new era of technology, led by our reptilian overlord Zuckerberg. Enter the metaverse, he said, where your wildest dreams can come true. Two years down the line, it’s become pretty clear that his Ready Player Zuck fantasies aren’t going to materialize; at least, not for quite a while. AI, on the other hand, really is the new technology frontier – but Meta’s previous obsession with the metaverse has left it on the back foot in the AI gold rush. Even though Meta has now shifted to AI as its prime area of investment and has maintained an AI research department for years, it’s fair to say that the Facebook owner failed to capitalize on the AI boom late last year. According to Gizmochina, employees have been urging management to shift focus back towards generative AI, which fell by the wayside in favor of the company’s metaverse push. Meta commentary Perhaps Meta is simply spread too thin. Back in February, Zuckerberg described 2023 as the company’s “year of efficiency” – a thin cover for Meta’s mass layoffs and project closures back in November 2022, which have seen internal morale fall to an all-time low. Meta is still trying to push ahead in the VR market with products like the Meta Quest Pro, and recently announced it would be releasing a Twitter rival, supposedly called ‘Threads’. In any case, it seems that Meta might have simply missed the boat. ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing AI are already making huge waves in the wider public sphere, along with the best AI art generators such as Midjourney. It’s hard to see where Meta’s AI projects will fit in the current lineup; perhaps Zuckerberg should just stick to social media instead. Or maybe we'll see Meta pull another hasty name-change to become 'MetAI' or something equally ridiculous. The possibilities are endless!
  10. The goals of China's 'Made in China 2025' program cannot be achieved, according to a report by DigiTimes that cites Wei Shaojun, a professor at Tsinghua University and Deputy Chairman of the China Semiconductor Industry Association. Not only will Chinese chipmakers not be able to satisfy 70% of the local IC demand in 2025, but their profitability, capitalization, and ability to invest in development are greatly behind those of their rivals. In a recent address at the China Nansha International IC Industry Forum, Wei Shaojun pointed out that despite a rise in the value share of domestically produced chips from 13% in 2013 to 41.4% in 2022, the ambitious goal of reaching a 70% self-reliance rate for semiconductors, a key objective of the "Made in China 2025" initiative, seems nearly unattainable. That's due to the current global shifts that made both U.S. and Europe fund their semiconductor sectors from the governments' pocket. Wei highlighted an imbalance between supply and demand in China's IC design sector, pointing out that while the monthly demand of the country is about 1.5 million 300mm wafer starts per month (WSPM), domestically owned Chinese semiconductor producers can only provide a monthly output of 440,000 WSPMs. The professor from Tsinghua University, an organization that has been particularly instrumental in the development of the local IC sector, underscored a critical misapprehension regarding the advancement of China's chip fabrication sector over the last ten years. The accelerated growth of China's semiconductor production industry was largely due to foreign companies operating within the country. From 2016 onward, Chinese investor-owned semiconductor companies have experienced an average compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.7%. Yet, non-Chinese wafer fabrication enterprises from Taiwan, South Korea, and elsewhere, have seen a higher CAGR of 30%. This not only doubles the expansion pace of Chinese-owned businesses but also underlines the continued reliance on external assistance in China's semiconductor manufacturing industry. The highly ranked executive of the China Semiconductor Industry Association also noted that the Chinese publicly traded semiconductor companies are currently underperforming, marked by the IC design sector's low gross profit margins. Amid the AI boom that skyrocketed Nvidia's market value to over $1 trillion, Wei Shaojun pointed out that 135 Chinese semiconductor firms on China's STAR and ChiNext markets have a combined value of less than half of Nvidia's. Moreover, these firms' average gross profit margin of 39.1% in 2022, particularly 34.2% for the STAR-listed IC design companies, is significantly lower than the over 60% enjoyed by U.S. chip developers indicating that Chinese companies are still operating at lower profitability levels. Judging by what we've seen from China's domestic CPU and GPU efforts, there's a lot of work remaining before it will close the gap.

  18. Microsoft’s Bing chatbot is now more readily accessible for iOS users thanks to a new widget, plus the AI has been bolstered to perform more responsively when using voice input on an iPhone. Windows Central spotted that Microsoft has implemented a Bing Chat widget that can be added to the Home screen, allowing you to initiate a session with the chatbot with a simple tap. That’s a handy ability indeed for regular users of Bing AI on iOS devices. For instructions on how to add a widget to the iPhone Home screen, check here. In the Bing blog post announcing this new feature for iOS, Microsoft also tells us that it has made progress on another front for iPhone owners – namely better performance for the voice input button on the Bing mobile app (for iOS, and Android as well). When you tap the button it should now indicate that it’s listening instantly. Analysis: Catching up with Android The widget is a very useful touch in terms of convenience for regular users on the iPhone, and it brings the Bing Chat experience up to parity with the Android version (which already had this feature). Overall, Microsoft’s setting a pretty fast pace of development with its Bing AI, as considerable progress is being made on a weekly basis, with both the mobile and desktop incarnations of the chatbot. Regarding the latter, we’ve just seen that Microsoft has brought voice input to desktop PCs (previously this had been a mobile-only feature). The idea is to make for a more natural chatting experience with the Bing chatbot, allowing you to speak to the AI, and have it reply via spoken words, too.
  19. Applied Materials has filed a lawsuit against Chinese competitor Mattson, alleging a systematic theft of confidential trade secrets over a period of 14 months, reports DigiTimes. Applied asserts that Mattson, which was acquired by Beijing E-Town Dragon Semiconductor Industry Investment Center in 2016, undertook a coordinated campaign to poach 17 of its top engineers, a move which allegedly led to the illegal transfer of semiconductor designs. "Applied Materials vigorously safeguards its intellectual property from theft or unlawful use," a spokesperson for Applied Materials told Tom's Hardware. "We are taking legal action to ensure our intellectual property rights are protected. We cannot comment further on pending legal actions." According to the lawsuit, the engineers — including a senior department manager — hired away by Mattson had access to classified information including fab production technologies as well as Applied Material's roadmap. The lawsuit was launched in 2022, with the last departure said to have provided definitive proof of industrial espionage. Applied Materials contends that this theft could provide Mattson with a significant competitive edge in technological development. In response to the allegations, Mattson has maintained its innocence, insisting that the claims are baseless and will ultimately be disproven. Meanwhile, Canfeng Lai, a director at Mattson, admitted to sending documents from his work email to a personal account, but claims this was to keep a record of his achievements. Lai denies using any of the confidential information in his new role at Mattson or disclosing it to any third parties. The lawsuit details a number of suspicious activities surrounding the exodus of key employees, including that most wiped their company-issued devices and were evasive or dishonest about their new employer. Specific emphasis was placed on Lai's attempts to download sensitive information following his acceptance of a job offer from Mattson. Despite his assertions that his new role at Mattson is unrelated to the stolen technology, Applied Materials remains firm in its allegations of a carefully planned and executed act of industrial espionage.
