  3. Polestar, Volvo Car Group’s performance offshoot, just unveiled its future as a stand-alone EV performance brand, confirming plans for its first three models as well as a new purpose-built production facility in Chengdu, China. First up is the Polestar 1, a hybrid coupe looking like a cross between a two-door S90 and the Concept Coupe Volvo showed in Frankfurt. The 1 is set to roll off the line in mid-2019. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath says the coupe has “amazing technology packed into it,” and calls it “a great start for our new Polestar brand.” A 34-kWh battery pack feeds two electric motors combining with a 2.0-liter four. There’s 218 hp from the motors and 382 hp from the 2.0-liter, so we’re looking at 600 hp and a whopping 737 lb-ft. Volvo says the car should have a 90-mile range on electric power alone but didn’t give 0-60 times or top speed. The coupe rides on Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), also underpinning the XC90, XC60, and S- and V90s. Volvo says about half of SPA is unique to the new car, including the new Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension (CESi). What’s that? According to Polestar, it works like this: Each shock has an electronic valve, constantly monitoring driver inputs and road conditions, and reacting in two milliseconds as needed, though the driver can make adjustments to fine-tune it. The coupe also has a 12-inch shorter wheelbase than other SPA-based cars. The body is carbon fiber, cutting weight and according to Volvo improving torsional stiffness 45 percent. The car also uses a double electric rear axle, enabling torque vectoring. Polestar plans to build 500 coupes a year. Next up is Polestar 2, a pure EV starting production later in 2019. The midsize sedan, more of a volume player, is set to compete with likes of the Tesla Model 3. The inevitable SUV, called Polestar 3, comes after that. Polestar also said it is moving away from a traditional ownership model (hello, Tesla). Cars are ordered online only on a two- or three-year subscription basis. The zero-deposit, all-inclusive subscription includes a pickup and delivery service. Customers can also rent other Volvos and/or Polestars, all in one monthly payment. The idea, the company says, is as hassle-free customer experience as possible. Polestar is also going to have stand-alone showrooms for you tire kickers. The Polestar 1’s order books opened today (Oct. 17, 2017). Operators are standing by.
  4. LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency has taken three people into custody for playing Blue Whale game in Lahore. The suspects have also confessed to kidnapping a young boy in connection with the game. The FIA took action on the directives of Interior Ministry after the government of Pakistan received a letter from Interpol in which it had shared information in this regard. The accused told the officials that they played the Blue Whale game and kidnapped a person in accordance with it. They also confessed to releasing a video on social media after tying kidnapped youth’s hands and feet. The agency is also in search of their two other accomplices. Blue Whale game became notoriously famous for its absurd and dangerous contents. Game entices people to commit suicide after fulfillment of few unusual and risky tasks.

  10. TOKYO: Meet Lulu Hashimoto, a "living doll" and the latest trend in Tokyo's fashion modeling scene. Lulu - a full-body doll suit consisting of a wig, a mask and stockings patterned with doll-like joints - was born from one woman's desire to become cute. "I have always really liked dolls and for me, the epitome of cuteness is dolls," said the 23-year-old fashion designer Hitomi Komaki, who created Lulu. Dressing up as a mascot, called "kigurumi" in Japanese, is a po[CENSORED]r art form in Japan. Komaki has taken it to a new level by creating a body suit that looks like a doll and lets you move like a human. "Many people call my project a fetish, but for me it's not a fetish but fashion," she said. "It's like wearing nice clothes or putting on false eyelashes to become cuter." There is only one Lulu body suit, Komaki said, but dancers, designers and models are among those who have worn the costume. The identity of exactly who is inside is secret, she added. The stockings worn by Lulu were created by fellow fashion designer Koh Ueno, who airbrushes doll-like joints onto the material. "I want to see women wear these stockings and transform," said 29-year-old Ueno. "I want them to experience the extraordinary - to become otherworldly, artificial, or like a doll," he said. While po[CENSORED]r among fans of Japanese subculture, Lulu is now turning heads at the annual Miss iD beauty pageant where she is among the 134 semi-finalists chosen from around 4,000 entrants. The pageant, which includes "non-human" characters generated by artificial intelligence and three-dimensional computer graphics for the first time, will announce a winner in November. Lulu's ability to blur the line between reality and fiction has mesmerized fans on social media, where the Lulu Twitter and Instagram accounts have drawn tens of thousands of followers. "I find it miraculous that dolls and humans - two things that exist in different planes - are standing in the same space," said Erika Kato, 24, who met Lulu for the first time at a recent fan event. The possibility of wearing a suit and becoming Lulu also appealed to fans like 22-year-old Miu Shimoda. "I'd like to be a beautiful girl like Lulu at least once in my life," she said.
  11. ANKARA: Turkish EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik on Wednesday accused German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel of copying the "far right and racists" in his statements on a festering diplomatic crisis with Turkey. "Gabriel is not making original statements. He speaks by ´copying´ from the far right and racists," Celik wrote on Twitter in a tirade of 29 tweets criticising Gabriel and his Austrian counterpart Sebastian Kurz. "It can be seen that the German foreign minister has reached the same level as the refugee enemy and symbol of racist politics: the Austrian foreign minister," Celik said in another tweet. Austria, like Germany, has previously been locked in a bitter spat with Turkey. Last month, Vienna blocked Turkish Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci from entering the country to attend a rally marking the anniversary of last year´s failed coup attempt. Celik said attacks by "racists, fascists and enemies of Islam" against Turkey or President Recep Tayyip Erdogan meant "nothing" to Ankara. He accused Gabriel of trying to "sabotage" Turkey-EU relations and "giving racists a message of ´you´re right´". Gabriel on Tuesday said Erdogan´s strident style "had apparently led some to feel motivated to try to threaten and harass my wife". - Worsening relations - The dispute between Ankara and Berlin is showing no signs of easing as both sides make tit-for-tat remarks against each other following comments made by the Turkish head of state. Erdogan last week urged ethnic Turks in Germany to vote against German Chancellor Angela Merkel´s conservatives and two other parties in September 24 elections, labelling them "enemies of Turkey". Gabriel said at the time that Erdogan wanted to incite people in Germany against each other in "an unprecedented act of interference in the sovereignty of our country". Kurz on Sunday condemned "the constant interference by Erdogan in the internal affairs of other states," and suggested Germany was not the only country where Turkey interfered. Turkey repeatedly claims that Germany, home to three million ethnic Turks, is sheltering Kurdish militants and wanted coup plotters. Erdogan himself hit back at Gabriel personally at the weekend, telling him: "Know your limits." Relations between the NATO allies deteriorated sharply after last year´s failed coup following the widespread crackdown in Turkey on the public sector and journalists. Berlin says there are 10 Germans, including dual nationals, in custody in Turkey including Turkish-German journalist Deniz Yucel, Istanbul correspondent of the Die Welt daily. German ambassador Martin Erdmann visited Yucel in prison on Tuesday as well as Berlin-based activist Peter Steudtner, who was arrested in a July raid, the German foreign ministry said in a statement. "They are as well as can be expected under the given circumstances," the ministry said, adding Erdmann met each for over an hour, holding "intense" talks.

  17. Miami: Everyone who plans to look skyward when the solar eclipse sweeps across the United States on Monday should have the proper protective eyewear, or risk lasting blind spots, experts warn. Regular sunglasses will not do, the US space agency says. Only eclipse glasses that have a certification with "ISO 12312-2 international standard" are safe for use, according to NASA. Other options are number 14 welder´s glass, or making a pinhole projector that allows a user to project the image of the Sun on paper or cardboard. But with the Great American Eclipse´s shadow set to envelop the entire nation, educating more than 300 million people in its path is a tall order. Already, the US Fire Administration is warning of scams, such as counterfeit glasses being promoted as suitable for an eclipse when they are not. And of the handful of US wholesalers that make legitimate eclipse glasses, some sold out well over a week ahead of the event. - Dangers are real - "The dangers of looking at the Sun are real and serious," said Vincent Jerome Giovinazzo, director of ophthalmology at Staten Island University Hospital, Northwell Health. "The damage can really be permanent and right smack in the center of their vision." Many may recall a childhood experiment of using a magnifying glass to focus sunlight on a leaf or a sheet of paper and set it on fire. "The same thing can happen to your eyes," said Giovinazzo. Jules Winokur, an ophthalmologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, has seen the damage in patients who stared at the Sun. "They get a kind of macular degeneration where they are burning into their retina and they can lose vision and it can be permanent," he told AFP. "You can be left with a scar from where you were staring at the Sun and that can be right in the center of your vision." Most people don´t want to look at the Sun because it hurt. But during an eclipse, the pain and discomfort are not there. "It is actually not as uncomfortable to stare at the Sun but the damaging effects are the same," Winokur explained. "And what you can do is you can burn your macula the same shape of whatever crescent the Sun is showing. You wouldn´t necessarily feel uncomfortable." There is one exception to the rule of not staring directly at an eclipse. Those in the path of totality, where the Sun is completely blocked by the Moon, can take off their protective eyewear for the short period of time when the sky is completely dark and no circles of sunlight are visible around the Moon. In the United States, this 70-mile (113-kilometer) wide path of totality will pass briefly through 14 states. - Other options - Other options are available for those unable to buy eclipse eyewear. According to NASA, more than 6,800 libraries across nationwide are distributing safety-certified glasses. The old-school way of watching via a pinhole projector is also inexpensive and easy to do. "With this method, sunlight streams through a small hole -- such as a pencil hole in a piece of paper, or even the space between your fingers -- onto a makeshift screen, such as a piece of paper or the ground," NASA said on its website. "It´s important to only watch the screen, not the Sun. Never look at the Sun through the pinhole -- it is not safe."
  18. RIYADH: A hotel in the Saudi Arabian holy city of Makkah, where two million Muslims will perform the annual hajj pilgrimage, was evacuated Monday after a fire broke out, the civil defence service said. Civil defence spokesman Nayef al-Sharif said no casualties were reported in the fire, which was sparked by a faulty air conditioning unit on the eighth floor of a hotel in the Azaziyah district of Makkah. All 600 residents, most of whom had come from Turkey and Yemen for the hajj pilgrimage, were evacuated and have since returned to the hotel, Sharif said. The hajj draws Muslims from around the world to the western Saudi Arabian holy city of Makkah, birthplace of the Prophet Hazrat Mohammed (PBUH) and the most revered site in Islam. The pilgrimage, a pillar of Islam that capable Muslims must perform at least once, will take place in the first week of September.

  22. Gemini:

You have a dual personality, always caught up in a web of yes and no, right and left, this or that and so forth. Despite that natural charm and sweetly talkative demeanor of yours, there is still that obnoxious and nervous side to you which mostly fills you with such insecurity and loads of self-doubt that your partner is usually forced to end things with you themselves.

  23. NEW DELHI: Ten people were killed and dozens injured when an express train derailed in north India on Saturday, an official said. Emergency workers were pulling people out of mangled, upended carriages and rushing the wounded to hospital after five coaches derailed early on Saturday evening. "Ten people have died and dozens have been injured. Most of the injured have been taken to the hospital," said P S Mishra, chief medical officer for the area, by phone. Police said the casualties were being rushed to hospital, but they were unable to give numbers. "There are certainly casualties but right now the focus is on evacuation," senior police officer Jitender Kumar told AFP by phone from the accident site. "We are shifting everyone to the hospital. We are trying to take out those trapped inside the coaches." Photographs from the scene in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh showed people climbing onto upended carriages to try to pull passengers out. The accident is the latest disaster to hit India´s most populous state. It comes just a week after dozens of children died at a hospital that had run out of oxygen there. India´s railway network is still the main form of long-distance travel in the vast country, but it is poorly funded and deadly accidents often occur. Less than a year ago 146 people died in a similar disaster in Uttar Pradesh. A 2012 government report said almost 15,000 people were killed every year on India´s railways and described the loss of life as an annual "massacre". Prime Minister Narendra Modi´s government has pledged to invest $137 billion over five years to modernise the crumbling railways, making them safer, faster and more efficient.
