Johannesburg: Zimbabwe´s first lady Grace Mugabe was to appear in a South African court Tuesday after she allegedly used an extension cord to assault a model who was at a Johannesburg hotel with her two sons. The alleged attack threatened to spark a major diplomatic incident between the two neighbouring countries which have strong political and economic ties. Grace Mugabe, 52, is accused of beating Gabriella Engels, 20, on Sunday evening with an electrical extension cord, leaving her with injuries on her forehead and the back of her head. "She´s not under arrest because she cooperated and handed herself over to the police," South African Police Minister Fikile Mbalula told reporters. "In terms of foreign citizens, they must understand they have responsibilities, especially those who hold diplomatic passports." Pictures on social media appeared to show Engels with a bleeding head injury after the alleged incident at the Capital 20 West Hotel in the upmarket Johannesburg district of Sandton. According to local media, Mugabe was to appear at Randburg Magistrate´s Court at 2:00 pm (1200 GMT). She allegedly arrived at the hotel with bodyguards and accused Engels of partying with her sons Robert and Chatunga, both in their 20s, who live in the South African city. "We were chilling in a hotel room, and (the sons) were in the room next door. She came in and started hitting us," Engels was quoted as saying by the Times Live website on Monday. "The front of my forehead is busted open. I´m a model and I make my money based on my looks." Grace Mugabe, who is 41 years younger than her husband Robert, 93, has two sons and one daughter with the Zimbabwean president. Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, a provincial minister in South Africa´s Gauteng province, told Jacaranda FM radio that the case should be pursued fully through the courts. "We hope that it will send a strong message to all leaders who abuse their power and assault innocent people in our country," she said. Grace Mugabe regularly speaks at rallies in Zimbabwe and is seen as one potential candidate to take over from her increasingly frail husband. Last month she urged her husband to name his chosen successor, reviving speculation about the race to take over from the world´s oldest national leader. President Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from British colonial rule in 1980. The succession battle is widely expected to pit Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa against a group called "Generation 40" or "G40" because its members are generally younger, and which reportedly has Grace´s backing. Grace has previously denied harbouring ambitions to take over from her husband, but at other times has said she would be prepared to serve in any political position. She has taken on a larger public role in recent years, speaking regularly at meetings to drum up support for the president and also heading the women´s league of the ruling ZANU-PF party. In 2014, Grace led a bitter campaign to expel from the party former vice president Joice Mujuru, who had been seen as a favourite to succeed to Mugabe. In speeches this year the president has often slurred his words, mumbled and paused for lengthy periods. His reign has been marked by brutal repression of dissent, mass emigration, vote-rigging and a sharp economic decline since land reforms in 2000. The Zimbabwe government made no immediate comment on Grace Mugabe´s case.

LAHORE: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa in his message to the nation said that Pak forces will never disappoint. He kicked off the 70th Independence day celebrations by hoisting the largest national flag in the history of Pakistan at Wagah Border Lahore on the eve of Pakistan's 70th Independence anniversary. As per details, the flag was hoisted on a 400-feet pole, whereas the size of the flag is 120x80 feet. The flag has been made entirely in Pakistan, and is said to be the highest flag in South Asia and the 8th highest in the world. While addressing to the nation on the 70th Independence Day at Wagah Border, COAS felicitated the entire nation saying that Pak forces will never disappoint the nation and will stand resilient against enemies. He humbly thanked to Allah Almighty, adding that Pakistan came into existence on 27th of Ramazan, no one can harm the country which was gotten in the name of Allah and his messenger. COAS said that with the national resilience, abundance of resources and the huge reservoir of highly talented youth, the nation would overcome all the difficulties. Addressing the participants of flag hoisting ceremony held to mark Independence Day here at the Wagha border late on Sunday, he said Pakistan is getting progress and even though today, the challenges being faced by the nation are far greater and more complex than ever before. COAS said Pak forces will preserve and protect the ideology, solidarity, integrity and a bright future for Pakistan at any cost, adding that "we will leave no stone unturned to make the county as per ideology of its founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah and thinker Dr Allama Iqbal". He further said that every person of the nation is a soldier of Radd-ul-Fasaad, adding that "we are ready to sacrifice our lives for the sake of motherland and will protect it till the last drop of our blood".

JERUSALEM: Israel´s government approved Sunday emergency measures to end a "disruptive" months-long strike over pay by scientists working at the country´s top secret nuclear research centre. Scientists at the Dimona Nuclear Research Centre have been on a slowdown strike for the past three months after their demand for a wage increase was refused. Israel is believed to be the Middle East´s sole nuclear power but has long refused to confirm or deny that it has such weapons, and the Dimona plant officially focuses on research and energy provision. "The government unanimously approved the request of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission head to implement emergency regulations that would enable the issuing of back-to-work orders to employees of the Nuclear Research Centre," the prime minister´s office said. The slowdown was "disrupting activities essential to Israel" and the decision to issue the orders came in the wake of "an immediate risk" to production at the facility, the statement said. It said back-to-work orders would be issued for up to 50 scientists who must return to full duties within three months. The US-based Institute for Science and International Security estimated in 2015 that Israel had 115 nuclear warheads. At the same time, Israel strongly opposed alleged efforts by other regional powers, most notably its arch-foe Iran, to obtain nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear programme is strictly for civilian purposes.

The Monterey auctions are effectively the last major sales of the year in the U.S. collector car market, setting the tone for Arizona in January and reconfirming trends that have been building in the market since the start of the year. Most of the major auction houses look to the Monterey auctions for signs of movement in the marketplace as collectors from all over the world descend upon the peninsula for a packed schedule of events. In 2016, the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction enjoyed $34.8 million in sales with a strong 88 percent sell-through rate, the auction house once again aiming for quality over quantity by offering just 115 vehicles. The 1931 Bugatti Type 51 Grand Prix was the top sale of the week for Bonhams, bringing $4 million on auction day, with a curiously recent model -- a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari -- following closely with a $3.685 million result. The 20th annual Bonhams Quail Lodge sale will feature plenty of concours and auction circuit frequent flyers, alongside plenty of relatively fresh machinery that is just starting to make moves in the marketplace. Here are seven cars (listed in no particular order) to keep an eye on: 1. 1990 Maserati Shamal A relatively rare Maserati model from the early 1990s, the Shamal is quite different from the unfortunate but similar-looking Biturbo lineup, packing a twin-turbocharged 3.2-liter V8 good for 326 hp. A production run of just 369 examples kept these out of sight in the U.S., though we should note most examples were not as babied as this 6,200-kilometer example finished in Dazing Black over Pella Nera. This car was sold new in Switzerland and has been in the same ownership since 1994 as part of a big collection. A treat for completists and fans of obscure Masers, Bonhams cites a wide-open estimate range of $125,000 to $175,000. There is an admittedly thin market for this model, but a strong result here could help send more to our shores. 2. 1990 Ferrari 348 TB A Ferrari model that may still seem very recent, the 348 TB is nearing 30 and starting to attract the attention of collectors who previously dismissed it as too new. These 3.4-liter V8-engined wedges were offered in coupe and spyder form, for a time making up a sizable chunk of Ferrari production in the early 1990s as the Testarossa served out its long life. The example that Bonhams will offer is described as a well-documented Medium Blue car that shows 11,200 miles from new, with Bonhams noting that paint meter readings show that the car is wearing "most of its original paint." The auction house estimates that this 348 TB will fetch between $100,000 and $120,000 on auction day, the high range for this model at the moment, though plenty of neglected examples with deferred maintenance can be found out there. Well-heeled millennials (yes, there are a few) are coming around to their dream cars from the 1990s, and a babied 348 TB qualifies. 3. 1986 Ford RS 2000 The Ford RS 200 is easily the most capable car with a blue oval badge never sold in the U.S., and it's nothing short of a rally terror designed to rule over the mayhem known as Group B. With a 1.8-liter turbocharged and intercooled inline four pumping out 250 hp and a five-speed manual transmission sending those horses to all four wheels, the RS 200 enjoyed a very tiny model run for homologation purposes with just 148 road-legal models built. These trade hands quite frequently at the top auctions in Europe, but until recently, they haven't seen made U.S. roads. Bonhams indicates this car was in the U.S. almost since new and currently shows just 8,300 miles. The auction house notes that this RS 200 has not been started at all for the past decade, but it has received some recommissioning work in the past. Bonhams estimates that this RS 200 will bring between $200,000 and $300,000 on auction day, offered solely on a bill of sale. That's a wide price range, and it still reflects the uncertainty over U.S. collectors' appetite for this model. 4. 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Jolly Club Continuation European rally legends from the 1970s and 1980s are starting to make more appearances at top U.S. auctions, and the Lancia Stratos is one such rally legend. Powered by a 2.4-liter Ferrari Dino V6 engine, the Stratos combined a very capable suspension with a short wheelbase and a compact, light body. This particular example was left unfinished when Stratos production ended, and it was one of the models completed by Autosport Jolly Club in Milan, spending its early years in Switzerland and later joining a Group B rally car collection (where these typically reside). Bonhams estimates that this Stratos will fetch between $400,000 and $550,000 on auction day, with the midpoint of that estimate being the current market value for this model. It probably won't see much mud when and if it finds a new owner, but if it ends up selling in the U.S., the ranks of Stratos models here will grow noticeably. 5. 2003 BMW Z8 Alpina The Z8 is a unique BMW design from the past decade, and it has aged remarkably well since its modest model run. Longtime BMW tuner Alpina lent its talents to a limited run of the roadster, with Alpina models using a 4.8-liter V8 tuned to 375 hp in addition to sporting a retuned suspension. The example Bonhams will offer in Monterey has covered just 16,800 miles in its one-owner history, living in California. The auction house estimates this Alpina Z8 will fetch between $200,000 and $250,000 on auction day, with the Z8 surging in value in recent years. The time to get in on these has arguably passed, but on paper, this sounds like the type of car that collectors covet. 6. 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL While there's no shortage of rare BMW models from the past half century to discover -- the whole 502/503 range, for instance -- a decade ago, collectors turned their attention to the 3.0 CSL "Batmobiles" of the 1970s. These Neue Klasse coupes were among the first true performance cars from Munich with 3.0-liter inline-six engines churning out 185 hp while dropping 300 pounds compared to more common versions of this body style. Bonhams will offer a Colorado Orange example that spent its early years in Italy but accumulated just 46,000 miles throughout its life. Bonhams estimates this 3.0 CSL will fetch between $290,000 and $330,000, reported to be an original example that has seen only sparing use. Yes, this is currently the price range for the better examples of this model, and they're showing no signs of coming down from the tree. 7. 1995 McLaren F1 Seemingly "affordable" not that long ago, McLaren F1 values have not just blasted into orbit but are halfway to Mars, with the top examples trading in the $14 million to $15 million range. Bonhams will be one of the auction houses exploring interstellar space in the coming months, with its catalog cover car being the first fully federalized and U.S. road-legal F1; a one-owner example that shows 9,600 miles, half of which is said to have been accumulated on a shakedown cruise through Europe undertaken by the first owner straight from the factory. This F1 was then shipped to the U.S. where it was converted, without irreversible changes, to U.S. specs. The car has since been converted back to its as-delivered specs. Needless to say, the car has been maintained by BMW's main U.S. workshop during its 22-year residence in the country, as part of an East Coast collection. Bonhams offers no published estimate for this example -- even among road-going F1s cars, it's a bit of a rarity, having been federalized and then returned to original condition in the States. Early F1s are currently sailing into the import eligibility window without painfully depressing Show and Display red tape, so the F1's story in the States is just now beginning. Its entry into import eligibility coincides with some truly amazing auction prices for this model as the market realizes it's never truly been surpassed by any other car in the decades since, either in ability or historical stature.

KATHMANDU: Floods and landslides caused by torrential monsoon rains have killed at least 25 people in the last two days across Nepal, officials said Saturday. Heavy rains have hit more than a dozen districts in the country´s far eastern region as well as some areas in the west since Friday morning, the home ministry said. Flooding has occurred across the densely po[CENSORED]ted lowlands that border India, while some remote districts in the hilly areas of the far east have been hit by landslides triggered by the monsoon rains. "We are still collecting the details of the loss. According to the preliminary reports to the ministry over 25 people are feared dead," Home Ministry spokesman Deepak Kafle told AFP. The Prime Minister´s office issued a statement putting the death toll at more than two dozen since Friday. Thirteen people died in eastern districts and at least four others are missing, the head of the region´s police Ramesh Bhattarai said. Telephone and electricity lines have also been affected by the heavy downpour making it difficult to confirm the full extent of the damage in remote areas, the police chief added. Roads across the southern plains have been blocked by the rains and three highway bridges collapsed in western Banke district, Home Minister Janardan Sharma said at a press conference. Images on social media showed the runway at Biratnagar airport in eastern Morang district submerged in a metre (three feet) of water with an empty plane stranded on the tarmac. Chief of Morang district police Arun BC said that airport had been shut due to the flooding. The most recent deaths bring the total death toll from this year´s monsoon to over 90, according to government figures. Nearly 100 people died last year in Nepal during the rainy season, which typically begins in late June and lasts until the end of August. Last weekend in the central lowlands, four girls from the same family drowned when they fell into a flooded roadside ditch. Another girl died and one was injured when they fell in open drains that had been submerged by monsoon flooding in the Kathmandu Valley last month. Footage shot by a bystander shows one of the girls tentatively navigating a flooded road, before suddenly disappearing into the brown muddy water. A few seconds later she appears out of another drain about 10 metres away. The video went viral on social media in Nepal, sparking outrage over the condition of the roads in the capital. Nepal´s weather department issued an alert Saturday warning that heavy rains were expected to continue for another day, and advised districts to close schools and residents to stay indoors.

San Francisco: Facebook´s interest in China has led it to discretely create a photo-sharing application released there without the social network´s brand being attached. "We have long said that we are interested in China, and are spending time understanding and learning more about the country in different ways," a Facebook representative said Friday in an email response to an AFP inquiry. "Our focus right now is on helping Chinese businesses and developers expand to new markets outside China by using our ad platform." A source close to the matter confirmed a New York Times report on Friday that Facebook took the unusual step of creating an app called Colorful Balloons and releasing it through a local company with no hint that the social network was involved. Colorful Balloons has features similar to Facebook´s Moments application. Facebook has long been keen to find a way into mainland China, where the social network has been banned since 2009. Google, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook are among Silicon Valley stars not allowed to operate on China´s tightly controlled internet. Facebook chief and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has made high-profile visits to China and met with political leaders there, and is even studying Mandarin. Colorful Balloons was released early this year through a separate Chinese company, according to the New York Times. It quoted someone close to the matter who did not want to be identified, citing the political sensitivity of the situation. Facebook is interested in learning how apps win fans in China, without having a prominent company name associated with it. This could help explain the quiet approach. Having a company in China distribute the application can be more efficient due to local business connections and familiarity with local rules.

WASHINGTON: A U.S. Navy destroyer carried out a "freedom of navigation operation" on Thursday, coming within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built up by China in the South China Sea, U.S. officials told Reuters. The operation came as President Donald Trump's administration seeks Chinese cooperation in dealing with North Korea's missile and nuclear programs and could complicate efforts to secure a common stance. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the USS John S. McCain traveled close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, among a string of islets, reefs and shoals. China has territorial disputes with its neighbors over the area. It was the third "freedom of navigation operation" or "fonop" conducted during Trump's presidency. Neither China's defense ministry nor its foreign ministry immediately responded to a request for comment. The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, and comes as Trump is seeking China's cooperation to rein in North Korea. Tensions have risen recently after North Korea carried out two nuclear tests last year and two ICBM tests last month, prompting a strong round of U.N. sanctions which angered Pyongyang who threatened to teach the United States a "severe lesson". Trump in turn responded by warning North Korea it would face "fire and fury" if it further threatened the United States. U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis issued a stark warning to North Korea on Wednesday, telling Pyongyang that it should stop any actions that would lead to the "end of its regime and the destruction of its people." The United States has criticized China's construction of islands and build-up of military facilities in the sea, and is concerned they could be used to restrict free nautical movement. The U.S. military has a long-standing position that its operations are carried out throughout the world, including in areas claimed by allies, and they are separate from political considerations. The Trump administration has vowed to conduct more robust South China Sea operations. In July, a U.S. warship sailed near a disputed island in the South China Sea claimed by China, Taiwan, Vietnam. Experts and officials have criticized President Barack Obama for potentially reinforcing China's claims by sticking to innocent passage, in which a warship effectively recognized a territorial sea by crossing it speedily without stopping. China's claims in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes each year are contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The McLaren 570GT cooks. It cooks with speed on the highway, the cabin cooks thanks to a full length panoramic sunroof above and the mid-mounted engine really cooks, enough to send heat wafting from the rear vents after only a short drive. The color, however? A cool turquoise shade named Pacific blue. Even in that color we can’t say the 570GT blends in, but compared to the 570S we drove last year, in arrest-me-red, it slips under the radar just a little bit, more so at night. So, the S and the GT aren’t very different cars, but there are some notable changes for the grand touring model, starting with the quieter exhaust system. It doesn’t rip, pop and snort as much as the S, which left this reviewer a little cold. The GT is 15 percent softer in the front and 10 percent in the rear. You’ll still be dodging the big potholes but nothing really makes you wince. The steering gets a slightly reduced ratio to smooth inputs, but is still both quick and easy. The car feels light all around with strong brakes and a still-touchy throttle. Of course, matting it from a stoplight makes both the S and GT feel light, especially when a factory fresh Mustang GT350 falls from your peripheral vision to your side mirrors, to your rearview. Other changes between the S and GT include more comfy, fully automatic seats, electric steering column, a nose lift, which we’ll get to later, more speakers, a little more storage with the clamshell rear hatch, quieter tires and that huge panomaric roof, cooking the car in Michigan’s summer heat. Just keep the AC on max and give yourself a few minutes before jumping in. And don’t touch the rear engine cover either. It’s hot. Execution It’s a McLaren, so you're going to have a good time no matter where you’re driving it. Like I said about the S, it's Porsche-911-Turbo money, but it gets way, way more looks than the squashed bug. I was cruising Woodward Avenue on a weeknight and the swarm of cars circling me got so annoying, I blasted back toward the expressway tunnels this car likes to call home. An orange MP4-12C also caught up, with a younger guy driving. He gave me a quick peace sign before taking off into the night. Even with a bit less sound from the pipes, it's still simply awesome to listen to. I took all my normal tunnel commutes and added a few others before I finally dropped the car off. It sounds almost like an F1 car at full tilt. It’s not a high-pitched scream -- more a bassy, middle C, just getting louder as the revs climb, with a little turbo whoosh for good measure. The 675LT sounded about the same. Might be a little less musical than a Ferrari, but no less thrilling. It takes a split second after flattening the throttle for this GT to get going, but after that it’s a never-ending wave of thrust, at least through 5 of 7 paddle shift changes. There’s one big -- scratch that, huge -- problem though: The paddles are in the correct format, the left is downshift, right is upshift, but they’re on a rocker and made from one hunk of carbon fiber. In theory the setup lets you change up or down with either paddle. The problem? Sometimes you just flick the upshift side with a fingertip and instead of going up a gear, it bounces back and goes down a gear. That’s not the end of the world on the street, but on the track, it could be catastrophic. This probably wouldn’t be a problem if you owned the car, but it’s the first time I’ve noticed such a thing. The seven-speed dual-clutch has three different shift modes through normal, sport and race. Race gives the driver a nice shove in the small of the back no matter where you shift. It’s the car saying, “I have plenty more to give, go for it!” Sport is a little softer; normal, even softer. The gauges change as the modes change and race mode has the coolest one. It’s sort of an ’80s digital throwback but it also tells you when to shift. You can see it in your peripheral vision, so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. The 570GT has a few other issues, mostly small. The pedalbox is narrow so people with big feet, or people who feel the need to manspread, might have an issue. Rear visibility isn’t great with the small rear window and the seat controls are hidden very low on the sides of the buckets. I also couldn’t figure out the memory function so I had to readjust each time I got in. It’s part of the convenience entry and exit function, so it makes it easier to climb out, but I’d trade that for the perfect driving position easily. The nose lift function is almost necessary in car like this. My driveway is a little steep so I had to use it every time, and it takes a few times to get quick at it. All you need to do is flick the left stalk about 10 seconds before you need it. And then remember to tap it down when you’re back on the street. It also lowers automatically around 35 mph. Sometimes though it moves you into a setup mode, which you’ll have to back out of and then hit the stalk up again. The car can also get loud while idling. With the AC on the radiator fans, located near the doors, make a ton of noise. Same when the nose is raising or lowering. I don’t know if there’s a compressor in there or something but sitting at idle, you have to talk loudly for a passenger to hear you. Last complaint: the damn passenger side seatbelt warning goes off if you have anything heavier than a feather sitting there. And it’s not like this car has a ton of room for stuff. During the summer I usually take my light jacket along to carry all my stuff—cigarettes, wallet, work keycard, keys and such. You have to either throw it all on the floor or grab the seatbelt and buckle it. There’s definitely no turning it off. The cabin looks great in our car’s cream color and the driving position, besides where your feet rest, is perfect. McLaren took the opposite tack Ferrari did with the steering wheel. Ferrari has everything within a finger’s reach including the start button, mode control, windshield wiper, turn signals and probably more. McLaren’s wheel is just a naked piece of carbon fiber. I think the McLaren’s is cooler, and after an impromptu poll in the office, about two-thirds think the same. The single screen radio/infotainment works well once you get used to it. It connected with my iPhone without a hitch but it does react weirdly to polarized sunglasses. You have to tilt your head sometimes to see what you’re looking for. Takeaway Looking back at what I wrote about the 570S, most of it rings true here. There’s plenty of competition around this price point. A few AWDers and a few RWDers, no manual transmissions, but a McLaren is something different. In the nicer parts of southeast Michigan you see a few Ferraris a day, at least when the weather’s nice. I talked to a valet who said in the past year he’s seen tons of Italian exotics, but just two McLarens, including this one. There’s something to be said for that. And at this lofty performance perch, and price, the buyer should get exactly what he or she wants, including exclusivity. As far as the 570 fraternal twins go, the GT offers a few more creature comforts than the S and for that, and for Pacific blue, it gets the nod. We suggest wearing shorts and keeping sunglasses close by, and turn the music up to drown out those damn cooling fans.

Washington: Hackers claiming to have breached HBO were demanding millions of dollars in ransom payments from the television group, while threatening to release more files from what is claimed to be a massive data breach. A video circulating online directs a message to HBO chief Richard Plepler claiming that the group "obtained valuable information" in an attack that yielded a whopping 1.5 terabytes of data. The message was authored by someone identified only as "Mr. Smith." The website Databreaches.net reported that 10 files were leaked Monday as part of the demand including what may be another script of the po[CENSORED]r fantasy series "Game of Thrones." The video revealed a letter stating the hackers obtained "highly confidential" documents and data including scripts, contracts and personnel files. "We want XXX dollars to stop leaking your data," the letter said, later alluding to a figure of half the group´s annual budget of $12 million to $15 million. It went on to say, "HBO spends 12 million for Market Research and 5 million for GOT7 advertisements. So consider us another budget for your advertisements!" The message comes a week after a leak of one script of "Games of Thrones" and content from other productions. The letter said HBO was the 17th target for the hacking group and that "only 3 of our past targets refused to pay and were punished very badly and 2 of them collapsed entirely." HBO said in a statement that it believed that further leaks might emerge from the breach and that "the forensic review is ongoing." "While it has been reported that a number of emails have been made public, the review to date has not given us a reason to believe that our email system as a whole has been compromised," the statement from the Time Warner unit said. "We continue to work around the clock with outside cybersecurity firms and law enforcement to resolve the incident."

Trees and vegetation rush past the large windshield as I pin the throttle to the floor. Forty, 50, 60 flash by as the tach needle climbs to 7,000 rpm; my brain is telling me I’m in a muscle car, but my eyes and ears are receiving entirely different signals. It's not a muscle car, at least in the traditional sense. It's the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400, and the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 carried over from last year remains its biggest asset. The 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque is impressive enough, but how usable and extractable that power is makes this car special. Unlike many turbocharged cars, this engine feels linear and begs to be taken all the way to its redline. Scads of torque is available down low from the quick-spooling compressors; it might not even feel necessary to rev it out, but those who do will be rewarded by emotional acceleration living up to the “Sport” in its name. Infiniti didn’t overhaul the engine for the Q50’s 2018 refurbishment, so let’s get to what is new...it's not much. A new look from the front and rear fascias is the most obvious change. For the Red Sport we drove here, that means a more aggressive look than before with the addition of some meaner-looking vents up front, plus a sharper grill and headlight shapes. Out back, new taillights, sportier-looking exhaust tips and a body-colored diffuser insert finish the look up. We liked the way Infiniti’s best-selling car looked before, and this update does nothing to change our opinion. It’s clean, sporty and sets itself apart from the German competition. Small changes worked themselves to the interior as well -- the steering wheel and gear selector from the Q60 get pulled for double duty in the Q50. A new red-stitched instrument panel further differentiates the Red Sport’s interior from the other Q50 trim levels available. Speaking of, Infiniti has gone and renamed the trim levels to confuse folks -- something at which the brand is adept. At the bottom we have Pure, available only with a Mercedes-sourced 2.0-liter turbo four. Next up is the Luxe trim, available with either the volume seller 300 hp version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 or a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.5-liter V6 coupled to an electric motor producing 360 hp in total. Finally, unchanged is the Sport trim that exclusively comes with the 300 hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo, leaving our subject here -- the Red Sport 400 -- at the top of the list. The Execution Smashing the throttle on this car is undoubtedly a joy, but this being a sports sedan, it must excel in other areas as well. The elephant in the room is Infiniti’s Direct Adaptive Steering system, commonly known as steer-by-wire. Infiniti says it is constantly performing updates on this system, so the 2018 model year should feel different from 2017. As I flip through the unending number of modes and response levels I can put the steering into, all I can think about is how sports cars used to come in one specifically engineered flavor of steering, rather than leaving the driver to figure out which of the countless combinations of steering effort, response and suspension modes he or she should be in. I tried my best to sample as many mixes as I could, but settled for Dynamic response and Sport Plus modes. This delivered a quick rack and weighty feel for the winding and undulating backroads around Nashville upon which I tested the Red Sport. As for how that steering response translates to handling gets more complicated. Upon first moving the steering wheel off-center it feels airy and disconnected from what is happening on the ground. Dial-in some more lock and the wheel quickly firms up how a standard steering rack would feel. The road isn’t transmitted to your hands as with a hydraulic (or even electric) rack, but the electronics do their best to simulate it. A Q60 Red Sport I drove not too long ago felt much more videogame-like than the steering in the Q50 does, so some worthwhile tuning has been done. Whereas the steering lacks natural feedback, the suspension excels at transmitting the road surface to the bottom of the seat. Bumps and imperfections might not make their way to the steering wheel, but I still feel like I’m well and truly connected to the chassis through the seat and pedals. The Red Sport’s stability control has been massaged to allow a bit more tail wagging fun for 2018; it’s easily taken advantage of on the rear-wheel drive Q50. Our car had summer performance tire option and not the standard run flats, leading to much more grip in tight corners. Those big tires with 19” Red Sport exclusive wheels do make a bit of noise when cruising along, more road noise than one might expect from a near $60,000 car. If it means less weight for lack of sound deadening however, we’re all for it. Even in the softest suspension setting, road imperfections and potholes were felt in the cabin, so don’t expect to have your cake and eat it too on the performance-driven Red Sport 400. Circling back to the beast under the hood feels necessary, because Nissan/Infiniti has proven again how capable it is at making a properly sorted engine. A few blasts up and down some backroads can easily make you forget this car doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto yet. You won’t be as perturbed or worried about the dual-touchscreen interface Infiniti has going on in the center stack. And the beeping from the lane-keeping assist feature? Well, that’ll still annoy you, so best turn it off when canyon carving. And the seven-speed automatic transmission gets the job done well and smoothly enough that I’m not yelling at it by day’s end. In fact, this is one of the few torque converter automatics I actually found myself choosing to use the paddle shifters (made of great-feeling magnesium) in manual mode for spirited driving. Some of that stems from its propensity to shift up when you don’t really want it to, but once the transmission realizes you’re trying to have fun, it tries to give you what you want. Unfortunately, the stock exhaust of this uber-fast sports sedan does not sound the part. It’s quiet and muted in every way a fast car shouldn’t be. Infiniti does have an answer for those yearning for the howls achieved by the VQ engines of old in the form of three dealer installable exhaust options. They range from mild to muffler-less, and we’re told one can be had for around $700. The quiet version of these exhausts was on hand for us to give a listen to, and after a few blips of the throttle it became clear that this is a required option box to check. We can’t wait to hear how good the more aggressive setups might sound if this is the baseline. The Takeaway The Q50 Red Sport 400 should theoretically be cross-shopped with the BMW 340i, Audi S4 and Lexus IS350 F-Sport, Infiniti says. It’s not aiming for BMW’s M division or Mercedes’ AMG. That being said, we’re not sure if this mid-cycle refresh will lure buyers away from those other brands. Even though it outclasses the others in pure power, the nonlinear steering and steep base price of $51,905 make it a hard sell against established players.
