  1. MAIDUGURI, Nigeria: Three people were killed in suicide bomb attacks at a camp for those displaced by the Boko Haram conflict in northeast Nigeria, the emergency services said on Monday. Abdulkadir Ibrahim, from the National Emergency Management Agency, said the blasts happened at about 11:20 pm (2220 GMT) on Sunday, just outside the Borno state capital of Maiduguri. "Two suicide bombers (a male and a female) detonated their improvised explosive devices at Dalori 1 IDP (internally displaced persons) camp, leading to the death of three IDPs, while 17 others were injured," he said in a statement. "Another incident occurred at Dalori 2 IDP camp, where a suicide bomber was intercepted, leading to the death of the suicide bomber." The Islamist militant group Boko Haram has increasingly used suicide bombers in its eight-year insurgency that has left at least 20,000 dead and displaced more than 2.6 million others. Dalori, which is about 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Maiduguri, houses some 50,000 people in makeshift accommodation and has been targeted by bombers before. On the evening of June 18, two women blew themselves up at Dalori 2, where 10,000 people are living, The attack injured several IDPs but killed only the bombers. It followed a separate attack at nearby Kofa village, where two women used as human bombs exploded, killing at least 16. On January 30 last year, at least 85 people were killed when militant fighters stormed and torched Dalori village and tried to gain access to the IDP camps. Nigeria´s military and government maintain the jihadists are a spent force after a sustained counter-insurgency pushed them out of captured territory since early 2015. But signs remain that the violence is far from over. On Sunday, police in the northern city of Kano said they had arrested five Boko Haram members after a gunfight. Kano state police chief Rabiu Yusuf said the three men and two women were suspected of planning attacks on markets and places of worship. The city has seen a lull in Boko Haram activity since a November 2014 gun and suicide attack at the main mosque killed more than 100. An internal army memo, seen by AFP, also indicated Boko Haram was back in its "Camp Zero" enclave in the Sambisa Forest of Borno, which had been declared cleared in December last year.

  4. CAIRO: The Arab League on Sunday accused Israel of "playing with fire" with new security measures at a highly sensitive Jerusalem holy site. "Jerusalem is a red line," its chief Ahmed Abul Gheit said in a statement, adding that "no Arab or Muslim will accept violations" against the city´s holy sites. Deadly clashes have rocked Jerusalem since Israeli authorities installed metal detectors at entrances to the Haram al-Sharif compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, following a mid-June attack that killed two policemen. Palestinians view the measure as an Israeli attempt to assert further control over the site, the third most holy place in Islam and the most revered site in Judaism. Abul Gheit accused Israel´s government of "adventurism" and said its moves could trigger a "crisis with the Arab and Muslim world". The compound, which includes the revered Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock, has been the focal point of tensions between Israelis and Palestinians for decades.

  11. KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait on Thursday expelled Iranian diplomats and closed some embassy missions after the emirate´s top court convicted a "terror" cell of links to the Islamic republic, the foreign ministry said. The action was taken after a supreme court ruling last month said "Iranian sides helped and supported the cell members," the ministry said in a statement. A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP around 15 diplomats were ordered to leave. Kuwait also ordered the closure of the Iranian "military, cultural and trade" missions, the official said. It was not immediately known if the Iranian ambassador is among the diplomats ordered to leave. Last month Kuwait´s supreme court sentenced the mastermind of the cell to life in jail and condemned 20 others to various prison terms for alleged links with Iran and Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, and plotting terror attacks in Kuwait. State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Sabah, who is also acting information minister, confirmed Kuwait had taken diplomatic action against Iran. "Following the supreme court ruling on the case... the government of Kuwait has decided to take measures, in accordance with diplomatic norms and the Vienna Convention, towards its relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran," Sheikh Mohammad told AFP. The row comes at a time when Kuwait is trying to mediate an end to the Gulf´s worst diplomatic crisis in years, after Saudi Arabia and its allies cut ties with Qatar over accusations it is too close to Iran and funds extremists. The Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Seyassah reported on Monday that 14 of the cell´s 26 members had fled to Iran by sea. They were convicted by a lower court early last year but acquitted on appeals several months later and set free. The supreme court, whose rulings are final, overturned their acquittal on June 18 and sentenced them to between five and 15 years in prison. Kuwait´s interior ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the 14 men were on the run but it said that they had not left the country through official exit points. The cell was busted in August 2015 and large quantities of arms, ammunition and explosives were seized from them, according to the Kuwaiti authorities. Kuwaiti courts convicted them of working for Iran´s Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah. They were also convicted of smuggling explosives from Iran.

  22. Don't let the name fool you: The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport isn't a mere trim level of the Santa Fe, but a crossover with a distinct design -- one that bridges the gap between the Tucson and the "large" Santa Fe. In other words, "Sport" means "smaller" here, rather than sporty. The Sport itself is available with two engines and in three trim levels; the junior model in the range uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder good for 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. But the 2.0T Ultimate, the range-topping version, is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline four producing 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque; this Santa Fe Sport does indeed have some power, if not much actual sporting ability, with a six-speed automatic doing the shifting. Hyundai updated both versions of the Santa Fe a year ago, giving the range plenty of standard equipment, including blind-spot indicators, LED headlights accents, a rearview camera, a touchscreen radio and three driving modes: eco, sport and standard. The 240 horses propel the Sport without much noise or drama, and Hyundai has done a good job of keeping tire and wind noise at bay. Acceleration comes with moderate nose lift, but dive on hard braking is well controlled -- about on par with the smaller Tucson. Hyundai's interiors and ergonomics have taken a turn for the better in recent years, and the logical layout of the center stack is a reflection of this. If you are a fan of buttons instead of menu-spelunking, you'll be happy in the driver's seat of the Santa Fe Sport -- there are buttons with easy-to-read labels everywhere. It takes no time at all to get used to all the controls; this is one of those vehicles where everything is right where you expect it. That's no small achievement in an industry still filled with many systems of varying levels of complexity. The user interface of the Santa Fe Sport is a welcome dose of ease and simplicity. Fuel economy figures are pretty close together across the three trim levels, so the question of picking the engine comes down to how much money you'd like to spend: The 2.0T Ultimate is approximately $11,000 more than the base Sport with the 2.4-liter. That's a lot of money for the stouter engine and extra features and puts the 2.0T Ultimate well into larger Santa Fe territory. The Sport with the 2.0-liter turbo actually starts at $32,595, but with the addition of the Ultimate trim, which includes pretty much all the equipment offered, you can be looking at an out-the-door price north of $38,000; the vehicle I drove was optioned up to $40,820, at which point it makes more sense to just buy the regular Santa Fe or head for a Tucson for substantial savings.
