  2. ISLAMABAD: Uzma Yousaf on Wednesday became first Pakistani women to scale 7,027 metre high Spantik peak in the Spantik-Sosbun Mountains sub-range of Karakoram in Nagar Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan. Uzma’s high altitude team included Wajid Ullah Nagri, Asghar Hussain and Yaseen. Also known as Golden Peak, Spantik has gained significant po[CENSORED]rity amongst expedition climbers recently. “We’ve arrived at the top of Spantik at 9:16 am today (Wednesday). I’m really happy at the achievement. I know people in Pakistan are gearing up to celebrate Independence Day on August 14. My joy has multiplied as I’ve been able to carry Pakistan’s flag at the top of Spantik at this moment,” a jubilant Uzma told APP on phone from atop Spantik. The 43-year old, who started her climbing career by scaling 6050-metre Mingling Sar in October last year and 5098 metre Rush Peak in February this year, said that it took her team 31 days to complete the voyage. “It was really tough journey. The snow was not allowing us to move. But we did not give up our mission and thank God finally we made it,” she said. She said her successful expedition was the proof that with determination and passion challenges could be overcome and dreams materialized. Her husband Yousaf Akhtar, who financed and backed the expedition, said he was proud of his wife. “She is really a talented lady. Though she has not been trained like other mountaineers, she has been making meticulous preparations for this climb for the past several months. Her hard work has paid back” he said. Yousaf also claimed that Uzma was the first lady to have climbed a seven-thousand metre high or above peak in Pakistan.

  9. ISLAMABAD: Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has taken oath as the 18th prime minister of Pakistan at the President House Islamabad here on Tuesday. President Mamnoon Hussain administered oath to Abbasi, after he swept the election with a majority vote. Earlier, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi elected as 18th prime minister of the country, bagging 221 votes. PTI candidate Sheikh Rashid secured 33 votes, PPP's Naveed Qamar 47 and JI's Sahibzada Tariqullah four. MQM-P, the fourth largest political party in the parliament, which has 24 members also announced to back PML-N’s candidate for the slot. Abbasi criticized the Supreme Court of Pakistan's verdict that disqualified Nawaz Sharif last week shortly after being elected prime minister of the country. Abbasi, who would serve as the interim prime minister for 45 days, thanked " people's prime minister Nawaz Sharif" for reposing confidence in him. "I am with Nawaz Sharif for 30 years, he never asked me to indulge in corruption. Nawaz Sharif's fault is that he made Pakistan a nuclear power," he said. Those of levelled allegations [against Nawaz Sharif] have ended up securing only 33 votes," he said referring to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. "There would be another Supreme Court where there would be no JIT, and where we will depose that Nawaz Sharif never indulged in corruption," he said. The PML-N leadership and its parliamentary party had nominated Khaqan Abbasi as an interim Leader of the House in the National Assembly and Shahbaz Sharif as the permanent prime minister who would succeed Abbasi during the second half of the next month in case he wins the by-poll on NA-120 constituency seat vacated by Nawaz Sharif. NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Monday accepted nomination papers of Khaqan Abbasi and five other candidates from the opposition parties that failed to agree on a consensus candidate. The opposition parliamentarians who filed their nomination papers which were accepted by the speaker include Leader of the Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah and Syed Naveed Qamar of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Sheikh Rashid Ahmad who is joint candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Awami Muslim League, Sahibzada Tariqullah from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Kishwar Zahra from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
  10. The greatest strength of the Dodge Hellcat is it stays true to itself and focused on its purpose. No weird add-ons or packages to try to enter another car's scene. No. It’s an over-the-top muscle car, not meant for the track, or the mall parking lot, or any concours. Dodge built the Hellcat to make noise (visually, emotionally, and actually) and did a damn fine job too. But the Hellcat does have one dirty little secret: it handles well. SRT made great use of the long wheelbase and brilliantly balanced the chassis for drivers to indulge in bad behavior without gnarly consequences. In other words, it’s fun to take this big beast to the track to lap or drift. To hoon a Hellcat is a three-step process: 1) Overwhelm the rear with power, 2) counter steer, and 3) massage the throttle to maintain the angle. Easy and all-ay repeatable. If the basic car needs one thing, maybe—just maybe—it could use a little more tire. You know, a security blanket of sorts to give the front a bit more grip to turn and stop, and the rear the capability to accept a touch more power on corner exit. Dodge agreed. And, thanks to the new Demon street-legal drag car, there just happened to be 20 x 11 inch wheels and fender flares available in the parts bin (for fun, they added the Demon’s front-splitter too). A quick call to Pirelli for some 305/35R20 P-Zero tires, and the Hellcat Widebody is born. The cynical could call this a weird add-on package to try to compete with the more track focused iterations of the Camaro and Mustang, but it’s simply not the case. For proof, take a good look at what SRT didn’t do. Spring rates, dampers, anti-roll bars, steering and brakes are all carryover from the standard Hellcat. Granted, steering is now electric-assist, but that’s there to make different driving modes available, not to create a serious track car. Instead, SRT built a Hellcat that’s more fun on the track -- it’s a coincidence the Widebody is also a bit faster. It looks the business, but won’t set any FTDs (fast times of the day). And owners shouldn’t care -- they’ll have the widest smiles. Turn-in is crisp, mid-corner speed is competitive and the driver must balance power to keep the rear end from sliding (unless they want the rear end to slide). Take a look at the lap around Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s infield road course in the video above. I’m besting 140 mph before I brake for turn one, and that’s with a crawl-speed chicane thrown on the straightaway. Brakes remain firm under foot, all the time, no worries there. And listen to each corner exit -- it takes a good three to five seconds to get to full power without wiggling the rear. It’s a blast. The Widebody starts at $72,590. Darn reasonable price for such a potent fun machine. Seriously, the Widebody is a road going Wave Runner, a constant thrill. Try not have fun on a Wave Runner. I dare you; the same can be said for the Widebody.
  11. WASHINGTON: The time for talk on North Korea is "over", the United States said, spurning a UN response to Pyongyang´s latest ICBM launch in favour of bomber flights and missile defence system tests. Nikki Haley, the US envoy to the United Nations, said there was "no point" in holding a fruitless emergency Security Council session, warning that another weak council resolution would be "worse than nothing" in light of the North´s repeated violations. North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un boasted of his country´s ability to strike any target in the US after an intercontinental ballistic missile test Friday which weapons experts said could even bring New York into range -- a major challenge to President Donald Trump. US strategic bombers on Saturday flew over the Korean peninsula in a direct response to the launch, and on Sunday American forces successfully tested a missile interception system which the US hopes will be installed on the Korean peninsula. Under Kim´s leadership, North Korea has accelerated its drive towards a credible nuclear strike capability, in defiance of international condemnation and multiple sets of UN sanctions. The US Senate passed new bipartisan sanctions on Pyongyang on Friday. Haley urged China, Japan and South Korea to tighten the screws on Pyongyang. "An additional Security Council resolution that does not significantly increase the international pressure on North Korea is of no value," she said in a statement late Sunday. "It sends the message to the North Korean dictator that the international community is unwilling to seriously challenge him. "China must decide whether it is finally willing to take this vital step. The time for talk is over." Analysts said the comments indicated Washington had run out of patience with the diplomatic approach, and could consider military intervention. The latest ICBM test "poses a seemingly tangible threat to the national security of the US", said Jeung Young-Tae, director of military studies at Dongyang University in South Korea. "Now the US will see no point in negotiation, which only helps Pyongyang earn more time to develop its weapons programmes," he said. "Whether we want it or not, the risk of unilateral military action by the US cannot be ruled out at this point."

  15. ISLAMABAD: What culminated today in disqualification of Nawaz Sharif started on April 4, 2016, when The News in collaboration with International Centre for Investigative Journalism (ICIJ) and German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung exposed hundreds of Pakistani politicians, businessmen, bankers as well as judges having offshore companies. The findings were based on a year-long investigation of The News that obtained access to the otherwise best-kept secrets of the world. Our correspondent, Umar Cheema, who is a member of the ICIJ that partnered with more than 100 media organisations from 76 countries to review 11.5 million secret files that a whistleblower leaked to Süddeutsche Zeitung. The project was given the name of the Panama Papers. About the project, the ICIJ said there are also legal means to send money abroad, and it did not suggest that all that is revealed was done unlawfully or by illegal means. The names found in the secret files range from those of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s relatives; from Benazir Bhutto to Javed Pasha; from Senator Rehman Malik to Senator Osman Saifullah’s family; and from Waseem Gulzar (a relative of the Chaudhrys of Gujrat) to Zain Sukhera, who was co-accused with former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani’s son in the Haj scandal. Businessmen featured in the record range from hotel tycoon Sadruddin Hashwani to real estate czar Malik Riaz Hussain’s son; from the Hussain Dawood family to the Abdullah family of Sapphire Textiles, Gul Muhammad Tabba of Lucky Textiles as well as Shahid Nazir of Masood Textiles and from Zulfiqar Ali Lakhani to Zulfiqar Paracha. Members from the bar and the bench were also spotted in the documents include one serving judge of the Lahore High Court, Justice Farrukh Irfan; and one retired judge, Malik Qayyum. Owner of Hilton Pharma, Shehbaz Yasin Malik opened the company for a Swiss bank account. Chairman ABM Group of Companies Azam Sultan, Pizza Hut owner Aqeel Hussain and Chairman Soorty Enterprise Abdul Rashid Soorty were also identified along with the family members. At a global level, the ICIJ and its partners discovered the offshore companies controlled by the prime minister of Iceland, the late father of UK prime minister, children of Azerbaijan’s president, the king of Saudi Arabia, associates of Russian president Vladimir Putin who stashed two billion dollars through banks and shadow companies, the Ukrainian president and brother-in-law of the Chinese president, among other prominent figures.

  17. WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that transgender people may not serve "in any capacity" in the US military, citing the "tremendous medical costs and disruption" their presence would cause. In late June, Pentagon chief Jim Mattis had delayed for six months a plan put in place under Barack Obama´s administration to start accepting transgender recruits. An estimated 2,500 to 7,000 transgender people are among the 1.3 million active duty service members. "After consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US Military," Trump tweeted. "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you." The issue of transgender rights in America has been increasingly in the spotlight in recent months, especially over how states regulate the use of public restrooms. The Trump administration faced protests earlier this year after it reversed Obama-era federal protections that urged schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity, not the gender on their birth certificate. Last month, the Pentagon said the five armed service branches could delay accepting transgender recruits until January 1 as they "review their accession plans and provide input on the impact to the readiness and lethality of our forces," spokeswoman Dana White said in a statement. Last week, White explained that the different services were not in agreement on when to accept transgender recruits. "The service chiefs all had to give their what needed-to-be-done timeframes" for integrating transgender troops, she told reporters. "Different services had different takes. Some asked for time... there were all kinds of different recommendations." Perhaps the most famous transgender US soldier is former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who served seven years in prison for one of the largest dumps of classified documents in US history. Manning, who served as Bradley Manning, was initially sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013 for leaking more than 700,000 classified documents to WikiLeaks three years earlier. She twice tried to take her own life last year alone, before then-president Obama commuted her sentence just days before he left office in January. Manning walked free in May. During her incarceration at the Fort Leavenworth military prison, Manning battled for -- and won -- the right to begin hormone treatment to begin transitioning toward her female identity. Manning, who is still employed by the army and retains its insurance coverage, has become an icon for transgender activists.
  18. A few years back in 2011 BMW was putting on immense hype for their brand new range of i Series electric and hybrid vehicles, there was particular hype around that time of their new and upcoming mid engined hybrid “supercar”, a concept version of the i8 was even the star car in Mission Impossible 4. Everyone thought the i8 was going to be a more modern version of BMW’s iconic mid engined M1. In this regard, the first concept car was shown all the back in 2009, but it wasn’t until 2013 at the International Motor Show in Germany that the final production version of the i8 was publicized, and it truly left the motoring world staring in awe. Fast forward a few years and the i8 hasn’t been doing particularly well, just take a look at used BMW i8′ on Autotrader UK, there is a fair of them on sale at well below their list price. All this begs the question, why? Before we try to answer this question, it is important to observe why would you chose a BMW i8 over something like a 5.2 liter naturally aspirated V10 Audi R8. Styling Styling is one of the BMW i8’s strong points, when the car first came out back in 2013 many people were not only calling it the best looking BMW ever but going as far as to claim it to be one of the best-looking cars ever made. The BMW i8 was the first car to look almost identical to the concept car that previewed it, and if you are a petrol head then you know manufacturers usually get the public hyped by showcasing a concept car with ludicrous features such as gull wing doors or quad exhaust tips among other silly shenanigans, but when it comes to the actual production version; we find that it’s been watered down to look like any every other dull generic vehicle on the road today. They say, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we haven’t met anyone yet that doesn’t like the look of BMW i8. You even get proper supercar like features such as butterfly doors and a raspy exhaust noise, but more on that last bit later. Engine, Performance & Fuel Efficiency If you were perhaps thinking ‘Supercar’ by looking at the exterior of i8 then sadly you will be disappointed because the i8 comes equipped with a 1.5 liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine from a mini cooper. Though despite its small size the hearty three cylinder engine still manages to produce 228 horsepower, add that with the 129 horsepower electric motor mounted on the front axle, and you get a total of 357 bhp and 420 lb-ft of torque being pushed through all four wheels. Thanks to the instant torque from its electric motor, and the mostly carbon fiber construction, the i8 is able to sprint to 100kph in 4.4 seconds and go on to an electrically limited top speed of 155mph. Now for $150,000 you are probably thinking that’s pretty sub par performance for a supercar, and you’d be right those performance numbers are actually slightly slower than BMW’s M3 that costs less than half the price of i8. But performance isn’t the main goal of the i8, if we take a look at most hybrid supercars today then the majority of them cost upwards of 1 million dollars, the i8 was designed to be the first affordable hybrid supercar, a trend we are only going to see grow exponentially now given the strict new laws on carbon emissions within Europe. BMW claims that the i8 will be able to easily return a class leading 92mpg and be able to deliver a total driving range of 310 miles in “everyday conditions”. However almost all journalists have reported that the i8 isn’t able to get anywhere close to claimed mileage figures and report an average of around 38-40 mpg. That still isn’t to bad considering the fact that you would be lucky if you managed to get double digits in an ordinary supercar. The BMW i8 is also able to travel about 22 miles at speeds up to 75mph by only using the electric motor. Recharging times are around 1.5 to 2 hours, but thanks to the combustion engine that constantly charges the batteries under conditions such as braking you shouldn’t really feel the need to do this too often if at all. Interior Quality, Comfort & Features The interior of the i8 despite the relatively small exterior size is pretty spacious and well layered, it even has rear seats though those aren’t really fit for anyone besides small children. Keeping in line with the environmentally friendly nature of the ‘i’ range, the i8′ interior is upholstered in leather that was created with a natural treatment process and numerous interior trim components made from recycled fabrics. A large 8.8-inch screen mounted on top of the center console runs BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, and all the buttons along with controls are angled towards the driver to make for a more immersive driving experience. Standard features on the i8 include 6 way power seats, 3 stage heated seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system, a heads up display, cruise control, 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, automatic 2-zone climate control and park distance control. Optional extras on the i8 include a choice between larger 19 or 20 inch wheels, LED headlights with cornering lights, leather engine cover, and blue colored seat belts. Verdict The BMW i8 is different car altogether, its the first in-line of a new era electrically assisted supercars, and yes like most supercars the i8 isn’t something that your really going to be able to drive in Pakistan, no matter how usable the i8 appears at the end of the day it is still a low slung fragile supercar. But that hasn’t stopped a lot of people from buying one, there are quite a few BMW i8’s within the country, heck there is even one being daily driven by a student in my university. The BMW i8 truly is a budget hybrid supercar.
