Angel Di Maria Angel Di Maria is set to start for Manchester United against Newcastle today. The Argentina winger was sidelined for three weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 3-0 victory over Hull on November 29. Di Maria returned to action as a second-half substitute in United's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last week and played the final half-an-hour. But manager Louis van Gaal could welcome him back to his starting XI for the visit of the Magpies to Old Trafford. Nicolas Gaitan Di Maria has told Van Gaal to complete the signing of his Argentina compatriot Nicolas Gaitan. Portuguese newspaper A Bola claim Di Maria hopes he has done enough to convince the United boss to go all out to sign the Benfica midfield star. The 26-year-old only signed a new five-year deal at Benfica last month, but that fresh contract does include a £27.5m release clause. Title Challenge Van Gaal has set his sights on winning the Premier League title this season. United currently sit in third-place, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea. But Van Gaal believes United can be England's top dogs come the end of the season. "We are looking in a football world where No. 1 is the most important thing," he said. "Our goal is to be first. It's not always so easy, you can see that."

Chelsea and West Ham will meet on Boxing Day at Stamford Bridge in a game that shouldn’t be anywhere near as one sided as last season. In that game West Ham defended for the vast majority of the 90 minutes with Chelsea unable to break Sam Allardyce’s side down. However this season the Hammers should be more than a match for Chelsea given the more expansive style of football they have been playing this season. Fabregas vs Song: Who will come out on top as ex-teammates collide when Chelsea host West Ham One of the men who has been crucial in this revival is Stewart Downing, who has undergone a transformation of his own. Over the course of the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons for Liverpool and West Ham, Downing registered four goals and seven assists. This season alone he has registered four goals and six assists so he is evidently in the form of his life. Part of the reason behind Downing’s rejuvenation is his move in position. He’s been a winger throughout his career but this season Allardyce has moved him inside to play behind the striker as part of the diamond formation he is employing this season. Most Liverpool and England fans probably would have thought that Allardyce was mad to try this but so far it has proven to be an inspired decision by the West Ham boss. On Boxing Day, Downing will face his toughest test of the season so far, in the form of Chelsea’s midfield anchor Nemanja Matic. The Serbian has been one of the best players in the league this season, alongside Downing, and it is no coincidence that the only game Chelsea have lost so far was when Matic was missing through suspension. Since resigning for the club in January from Benfica, Matic has quickly established himself as a key cog in Jose Mourinho’s side.

Entrez le texte à traduire ...Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has rejected Gareth Bale's claims that La Liga is the best league in the world, suggesting the Premier League holds that title. The Portuguese spent three seasons with Real Madrid, winning the top flight once, before returning to Stamford Bridge in 2013 for a second stint. That same summer, Bale swapped Tottenham for the Santiago Bernabeu in a €100 million move and impressed in his debut season as Carlo Ancelotti's men lifted the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Despite Bale's proclamations that he is playing for the best club and within the best league in the world, Mourinho thinks the overwhelming domination of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid weaken Spanish football. "[bale said that] because he's there," the former Inter and Porto coach, whose Blues are currently top of the Premier League, told BT Sport. "You have to accept what Gareth says, but I was also there. "I won La Liga, I lost La Liga, but I [also] won La Liga, and I know clearly the differences between La Liga and the Premier League. "To go to matches knowing that you are going to win for sure is not the best thing. In Spain everybody knows that two teams are top of the world. A third team like Atletico is doing wonderfully well and they won last year, which is not normal. "But after that there is a huge competitive difference and that's why the record is 100 points, 126 goals. In England, 100 points and 126 goals is impossible. If someone reaches 100 points and scores 126 goals, it's not the best competition for sure, they can be the best team, but not the best competition." Chelsea face fourth-placed West Ham on December 26 at home, while newly-crowned Club World Cup winners Real Madrid are in friendly action against AC Milan after a brief break on December 30.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to launch a January move for Roma’s Radja Nainggolan in a bid to save his side’s season, according to reports from the Daily Star. 2013/14’s Premier League runners-up have endured a woeful start to the current campaign, with below par defensive showings and a lack of cutting edge up front having left them in 10th position heading into Christmas. Despite spending over £100m on new players during the summer, Rodgers is understood to be keen to dip back into the transfer market in 2015, with Nainggolan a target. The Belgian ace has been impressive for Roma this term following his arrival at the start of the season, with his bombarding displays and physicality winning him much praise. However, even though the Serie A side value their man highly, they only own a 50% share of him, with fellow Italian side Cagliari the other club with a say. Liverpool are ready to pay around £10m to buy out the latter’s stake, but negotiating with Roma may be more tricky. Yet a deal might be doable, with the Rome giants having slipped out of the Champions League at the group stage.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is set to recall Oscar to his starting XI to face West Ham United at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day after resting him against Stoke City, according to The Times. Oscar, 23, was rested against Stoke after starting the previous 11 games before facing Mark Hughes’ Potters. Chelsea beat Stoke 2-0 thanks to goals from John Terry and Cesc Fabregas in what turned out to be quite an easy win despite the home side having much of the possession. The Blues did not really feel very threatened and the Potters could not muster many great chances as Chelsea secured their place at the top of the Premier League for Christmas Day. Chelsea midfielder Oscar looking to finish 2014 top of the Premier League table The Brazilian midfielder will be a big boost to the side on his return after having a big say in their surge to the top of the league table throughout the season. He, Fabregas and Diego Costa has linked up perfectly to provide some magic moments so far this season so his recall will be great for the Blues. Not to mention just how fresh he’ll now be. Also, the recall to the side means that Mourinho could rest any one of his midfielders now with Oscar able to play in a variety of roles in midfield. Oscar has created 25 chances in 14 appearances in the Premier League this season.

The Ballon d’Or debate rumbles on and Barcelona schemer Xavi has got involved. Whilst in Egypt the Spain legend has talked to Sport through a number of topics, as can be seen from the Tweets above. The most likely to bring headlines are regarding Xavi’s thoughts on the upcoming Ballon d’Or which seems almost certain to be awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid and Portuguese forward is up against Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer on the final three shortlist but Ronaldo is almost certain to emerge victorious in January. Xavi’s argument is simple, in a World Cup year, the prize should go to the best performer in Brazil, which according to FIFA was Lionel Messi. Quite why Xavi doesn’t suggest a German World Cup winner for the prize is not quite clear though!

The former Bayern Munich manager, who guided the Bundesliga giants to a historic quadruple, has advised Reus against joining his former team. According to former Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes, who guided the club to a historic quadruple during his last season in charge at the Allianz Arena, a move to join La Liga giants Real Madrid over the Bavarians would better suit German attacker Marco Reus. The Borussia Dortmund star, who has garnered a huge fan base due to his impressive displays at the Signal Iduna Park over the last two seasons, looks to be departing Jurgen Klopp’s crew, with the club sitting in the danger zone in 17th spot, and with his reported €25m release clause set to kick in next year. In a transfer similar to that of former team-mate and good friend Mario Gotze, reports claim Reus is most likely to leave to join Pep Guardiola’s side, but Heynckes believes with the number of world-class players already at Bayern Munich’s disposal, there will be no room for the 25-year-old die Mannschaft attacker. "I would recommend going to Madrid," Heynckes stated. "Bayern have four or five world class players up front. "Where would Reus play? If he really has that [release] clause of €25m, all the big European teams should go for him." The Borussia Dortmund superstar was recently slapped with a record-breaking £427,000 fine for a list of driving offences, including numerous amounts of speeding tickets and driving without a license for three years, an action Heynckes described as inexcusable. "It's incomprehensible. There is no excuse. He should be better advised," the former die Roten boss continued to say.The former Bayern Munich manager, who guided the Bundesliga giants to a historic quadruple, has advised Reus against joining his former team.
