The Portuguese was left angered by his team-mate's refusal to pass in the win over Espanyol but the Madrid defender is adamant the squad is united Real Madrid defender Nacho insists Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo have a "fantastic" relationship despite the latter's frustration with his team-mate on Saturday. Bale scored a stunning free kick in the 3-0 win over Espanyol but incurred the wrath of the Santiago Bernabeu faithful and his Portuguese attacking partner when he opted to shoot instead of tee up his team-mate late on. A similar incident occurred in the loss to Valencia earlier this month when both Ronaldo and Benzema were left aggrieved that Bale ignored them and failed to score on the counterattack at the Mestalla. Carlo Ancelotti warned he will not tolerate the notion of selfishness among his players after the match but Nacho is adamant there is no bad blood between Bale and Ronaldo. "Their relationship is fantastic. We're a group, we all get on amazingly," he was quoted as saying by Marca. Nacho, who scored the third goal in Saturday's game, was delighted to see Madrid put their back-to-back defeats behind them and get back to winning ways in the title race. "I'm happy about the goal above all and for playing in this shirt and in this stadium – it's wonderful," he added. "We had to win. In a club as a big as this everything gets magnified. Now it's time to think about Thursday [when Madrid face Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey]. "It's true we lost the last two games, but it can't be forgotten what we achieved, the record of wins."

Real Madrid put a forgettable week behind them as they got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Espanyol at the Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti's men were beaten by Valencia last Sunday and city rivals Atletico in the Copa Del Rey in midweek, but goals from James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale and Nacho Fernandez ensured they avoided a hat-trick of defeats. It was, however, a third loss in seven days for Espanyol, who could not capitalise despite the hosts having Fabio Coentrao sent off shortly after half-time. Valencia wasted an opportunity to gain ground on their rivals for a UEFA Champions League spot as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Celta Vigo. Rodrigo Moreno gave the visitors the lead just before half-time after Fabian Orellana had missed a penalty, but the Chilean made up for his error by grabbing the equaliser in the second half. Valencia could now be unseated in fourth spot on Sunday if Sevilla beat Almeria. Villarreal stretched their unbeaten run to 13 matches but were unable to put any more daylight between themselves and rival European hopefuls Malaga as the two teams shared a 1-1 draw. Jonathan Dos Santos' thunderous volley on the stroke of half-time put Villarreal ahead at La Rosaleda but Malaga fought back and Nordin Amrabat's equaliser on the hour mark levelled things up. The result keeps sixth-placed Villarreal one point and one place ahead of Malaga in the table. Quique Sanchez Flores' first league game since his return as Getafe coach ended in a 2-1 defeat at Eibar. Goals from Manu Del Moral and Ander Capa put the home side in he driving seat, and although Diego Castro pulled a goal back ten minutes from time, Getafe were unable to add to their tally.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is nearing the final stages of his recovery from injury, as reported by LiverpoolFC.com. The England international has been out of action since the first international break of the season, having suffered a further injury setback which has seen him unexpectedly miss out on the majority of the first half of the season. His last appearance for the Reds saw him play exceptionally in a dominating display at White Hart Lane, a game which the Anfield club won 3-0. He scored in that match, and Brendan Rodgers’ side have been missing his presence ever since.

Bideford have made an unbeaten start to the new year with a win and a draw in the space of 48 hours over the weekend. They started 2015 with a win on New Year’s Day, putting three past visiting Paulton Rovers. Richard Groves opened the scoring in the 20th minute, and Sean Downing doubled that advantage five minutes later. The Robins continued to control the game in the second half, and they got their reward in the 65th minute when Kevin Squire completed the scoring. They followed up that result with a valuable point away to Dunstable Town on Saturday, in one of only three Southern League premier matches to beat the rain. A goal-on debut for Danny Tapp looked set to scoop Bideford all three points again, but they were denied in the closing stages when Jamal McKenzie-Lowe struck for the home side. It was still a good point away to their mid-table opponents though, and it has been a strong reply after suffering a heavy defeat at Truro on Boxing Day. Biddy are now 17th and seven points clear of the relegation places, with a trip to Arlesey Town to come on Saturday.

The Reds are believed to want a deal for the 23-year-old to move to Anfield in the summer and are happy for him to join Inter Milan, who are also interested, on loan until the end of the season. Shaqiri, 23, has struggled to establish himself in Bayern’s first team since a transfer from Basel in 2012, making just 26 league starts in over two years. The Switzerland international, who has 41 caps, impressed at the World Cup last summer but has started in just three Bundesliga matches this season. Shaqiri can play on either wing, similar to current Liverpool star Adam Lallana, and would offer Inter a strong short-term solution to their struggles in 11th place in Serie A. Sky Sports football expert Ray Parlour, speaking on the Morning View, said: “It’s a move that he would be very interested in because he is not playing on a regular basis. “He is only 5’6” and Liverpool have a lot small players already, but he has potential and at 23 he is already very experienced for his age. He would be a good signing. “He has played with some top quality players. He always wants the ball, can go past players. Tracking back is probably not his game, but he can create chances. “With his calibre at being at Bayern, Liverpool have to have a serious look at him.”

Madrid: Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol said Monday he was leaving the Spanish giants' sport management team, which he joined in May, after he quit the squad because of a knee injury. The announcement by the iconic 36-year-old came about an hour after Barcelona announced it had sacked its football director Andoni Zubizarreta who was under contract with the club until 2016. "I have decided to end my working relationship with FC Barcelona," Puyol wrote on his Facebook page. "I hope to grow both personally and professionally so that, in the [CENSORED]ure, I can return to this house and give back everything that you have undoubtably given me during these unforgettable years," he added. "I remain enormously grateful to the employees, the management, the president and the sports management for trusting me and helping me during this transition which is not easy." Puyol announced in March that he would rescind his playing contract at the end of the 2013-14 campaign due to a knee injury and in May the club announced that he had joined its sports management team. He joined the Barcelona first team in 1999 and is the club's second most decorated player of all-time, behind only teammate Xavi Hernandez, having made 593 appearances. After beginning his career as a right-back, Puyol was converted into one of the most successful centre-backs in world football over the past decade as he won three Champions Leagues and six La Liga titles with his boyhood club. Puyol was also a key part of the Spanish sides that won the European Championship in 2008 and the country's first World Cup in 2010, memorably heading home the goal that took his side to the final in South Africa with a 1-0 win over Germany.

The day was always going to come eventually, the day when Steven Gerrard would leave Liverpool Football Club, but it's still a bit of a shock to system when reality hits home. I have been going to Liverpool games for pretty much the time Gerrard has been part of the Liverpool first team. He made his debut against Blackburn Rovers in a 2-0 win, whereas my first game was a couple of weeks earlier in a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United. I saw him dance through Sheffield Wednesday's defence to score his first goal for the club, and it was just the first of many memorable moments to follow. Olympiakos, leading the fightback in Istanbul, his heroics against West Ham in Cardiff in 2006 led to him having the rare accolade of the FA Cup final being named after him. View image | gettyimages.com There are more of course. Many late winners, inspiring performances. There is one glaring omission from his glorious career in the form of a league title, something which he came so close to winning last season, and the circumstances surrounding that are well documented, but it shouldn't act as a blot on his copybook. He had a large part to play in Liverpool mounting that improbable challenge last term. For those that know me, they probably feel I was Gerrard's fiercest critic but when you see a player at the peak of his powers growing up, you almost expect him to be like that for 90 minutes in every game - spectacular from every second. Of course that was me being unrealistic, and even when he wasn't at his best I suppose he was entitled to the odd off day given the amount of times he dragged Liverpool out of the mire. Looking back, I think he's played in near enough every position apart from a spell in goal - though that could come during the closing stages of the season, who knows? There has been debate throughout his career over where he should play in the Liverpool side having played wide, off the front man, in a deeper role, and as a box-to-box central midfielder. I personally liked him in the advanced role, whilst his capabilities and contribution to the side from a wider position was poo-pooed a lot because he wasn't playing his favoured central role, but as a wide player I can't think of many, if any, that have been better during my time of going to Anfield. As for now, is the time right for him to depart? Probably. If Liverpool had managed to win the league last season, I think he may have retired there and then with a prize that has eluded him for so long in his hands. Some will now say his powers are fading, that square pegs are being put in round holes in order to accommodate him in the side whilst trying to get the best out of several of the playmakers within the squad. There have been times when the Reds have looked a more balanced unit without him, but there are more questions that will follow. It's another big character leaving Liverpool, the biggest in many eyes. While some will argue that the announcement could be a big distraction for the Reds, it gives the opportunity for the fans to enjoy the talents of their hero from now until the end of the season. As much as I've said here, in reality, it's very difficult to put into words just how much of a contribution Gerrard has made to the club. I suppose the enormity of the figure that is Steven Gerrard will be truly felt when he eventually departs. All Liverpool fans should savour every cross-field pass [yes, even the ones that go into touch], every long range strike and cooly despatched penalty. We may never see another like him. Good luck to anyone on the hunt for spare tickets for the final games of the season, because you are going to need it!

Attacking duo Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani were the notable absentees as Paris Saint-Germain resumed training after the New Year break on Friday morning. The two had already missed a training camp in Morocco, culminating in a 1-0 friendly win over Inter Milan on Tuesday, further fuelling speculation that one or both could be leaving the club during the January transfer window. After the pair had failed to show up for the Inter Milan friendly, coach Laurent Blanc said he would be awaiting "some explanation" from both Cavani and Lavezzi. "They'll arrive on (January) 2 in the morning in Paris," explained Blanc, who refused to be drawn on a possible transfer of either player when the window opens on Saturday. "We'll expect some explanation, and then we'll make sporting decisions as a club." Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini, meanwhile, said that the Italian club had not been in contact with Lavezzi. "Lavezzi is a great player, but he's a PSG player. There is no contact and it's not for me to contact him," said Mancini.
