Price: £100,000 (est) On sale: mid 2015 Audi rewrote the supercar rulebook by combining sublime handling and usability in the original R8. The new Audi R8 gets an aluminium and carbon-fibre hybrid chassis, shared with the Lamborghini Huracán, and will stick with a choice of V8 and V10 engines with an S tronic twin-clutch box as standard. However, Audi plans to shake up the supercar class with an all-electric e-tron version. Previewed by 2009’s concept, this will cover up to 250 miles on a single charge, bosses claim.

Price: from £22,000 (est) On sale: Late 2015 Alfa's rebirth, started by the 4C, will continue with the all-new Giulia. Penned as a rival for the BMW 3 Series and new Jaguar XE, the Italian saloon will be rear-wheel drive and potentially powered by a range of Fiat’s MultiAir engines. The wraps will come off next July before arriving in showrooms before the end of the year. Our image gives you some idea as to how the svelte saloon will look in hot QV guise, with strong lines and a distinctive grille. But don’t expect the design to be as lavish as Alfas of old.

Kia in its turn in the dance of zero-emission vehicles with Soul EV 2015. EV was developed from the platform of the Soul in conventional engine, newly redesigned for 2014; so it also shows an urban look young and vibrant. A Soul to Soul Power Kia has done a great job to make the electric car easy to use. It comes with two charging sockets: one of SAE J1772 (levels 1 and 2 AC) and a quick-charging CHAdeMO 480 volts. With a 120 volt power supply, it takes 24 hours for a full charge; significantly decreases the time (a little over four hours) with a 240 volt power supply. One can also do a quick charge (80% of the maximum capacity) in only 24 minutes using a 100 kW charger. With a conventional charger 50 kW must be 33 minutes. Located under the floor, the battery lithium-ion polymer has a capacity of 27 kWh (3 more than the current industry standard). It gives the Soul a range that can reach up to 149 km depending on the manufacturer. At present, the only car that displays a greater autonomy is the Tesla Model S. Kia has added spacers under the battery to protect it, which also had the effect of increasing the torsional rigidity of the chassis 5 9%. The permanent magnet synchronous motor is powered by direct current at a voltage of 360 volts. It produces 109 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of instant torque (torque delivery is one of the advantages of electric motors). It is connected to the front wheels through a transmission to a single report and announced a top speed of 145 km / h. Soul accelerates from 0 to 60 miles / h (96 km / h) in 11.2 seconds. Battery reduced very little space inside from the Soul gasoline engine. Rear passengers lose less than 8 cm legroom and cargo space in the back is the same (512 liters). Electric and playful Soul displays a square look, but thanks to her curves placed in the right places, it gives off an overall allure rather joyous. Outside, only a few clues distinguish EV her twin conventional engine, including a coordinated color plate that replaces the grille (both loading terminals are hidden under the plate) and specific logos. EV buyers will also receive an exclusive choice of three two-tone paint. Side interior, nothing comes emphasize just taken place in an electric car (except complete silence after pressing the start button). The fit and finish are of high quality and everything is prepared in the conventional way: no strange commands or [CENSORED]uristic decor. The cabin is spacious for all occupants and rear passengers will notice barely lost to centimeters legroom. Soul EV has an instrumentation own. Directly in front of the driver, there is an LED display that indicates the charge level of the battery, the available range, power consumption and speed. In the center, there is a multimedia touchscreen that can display 8-inch navigation system, entertainment system or the data on the battery charge and power consumption. In the center console, there is a shift lever that works just like a conventional automatic transmission. The only difference is in the "Drive" position, there is a "B" position that engages the regenerative braking mode. Soul EV has undergone extensive testing in cold weather. The Luxury variant has a unique feature: a heat pump that transports to the cabin heat from the electrical components. This device allows to reduce electricity consumption by 27% compared to the base EV when using the heating system. On the road If we except some noise generated by the engine driving the EV Soul is very similar to that of a conventional car. Acceleration is more than enough to beat traffic as needed. At cruising speeds, it is very well insulated from the noise of the wind and tires. When selecting the "B" mode on the gear lever, the operation of the regenerative braking can become intrusive, to the point that practically no need to press the brake pedal. On long runs, it often proved more practical to return to "Drive" position; the system becomes much less active, which helps maintain a steady speed while still garnering a certain amount of energy in the battery. Soul EV has a rigid frame and flexible suspension, which makes it very comfortable to drive in town. Its only flaw for handling comes tires with very low rolling resistance. According to the manufacturer, they offer a lowered resistance of 10% compared to conventional low-resistance tires. But their grip is also reduced, and they sometimes tend to squeal when you take turns with enthusiasm. Our test drive of 90 km was composed equally of city driving and highway driving. During this tour, I drove normally, without adopting a particular behavior to save energy (except close the air conditioner and open the windows). When parking the EV, the battery still contained 26% of its charge. An interesting purchase Besides the financial incentives offered by governments, Soul basic EV is offered at $ 34,995 ($ 37,995 plan for the Luxury model). It comes standard with a long list of equipment. Its base price is a little higher than that of the Nissan Leaf ($ 31,789), but it is less well equipped and autonomy announced is below 15%. The Quebec government offers rebates for electric cars that can be up to $ 8,000, plus a rebate of $ 1000 for a charger for the home. In Ontario, these amounts are $ 8,500 and $ 1,000. For its part, Kia offers a free 240-watt charger to the new owners of a Soul EV, bringing the total of financial incentives to nearly $ 10,000. Electric Soul is equipped with all safety devices and driving support her twin gasoline, which includes: six airbags, antilock brakes, stabilization, assist device when braking from emergency start device side, pressure monitoring tires, rearview camera. Sonar front and rear horn pedestrian (when driving less than 20 km / h) optional. Only 50 Kia Soul EV will be imported to Canada this year. They will be distributed among 11 dealers in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. So if you are looking for a practical and stylish electric car, place your order as soon as possible....

The current generation of the Kia Optima gets to carry forward for one more model year -- one year longer than its Hyundai Sonata cousin, which is being redesigned this year -- and that should be fine by most shoppers. In part, it's because the 2015 Optima was always an advanced student of design (it remains nearly the knockout it was at launch four years ago), and it continues to make the honor roll in most of its classes, with good performance, a roomy interior, and a great value-for-money factor no matter which version. A mid-cycle revamp last year really didn't mess much with the Optima's already attractive attributes; and it's saying a lot to note that even up next to contemporary, rakish models like the Ford Fusion and Mazda 6, the Optima holds its own. Those changes were largely limited to a sharper front-end appearance, revised tail, and some new trims, with LED lighting and new LED fog lamps to be had on some of the model line. As well, there's a new EX-L (Limited) model with a plush Nappa leather interior. And this year there's a new dark-cloth interior for the base LX. The Optima's cabin keeps it sporty and clean, with a classy, minimalist cockpit look that reminds us of Audi's interiors of a few years ago, with a wide rectangular bank of controls canted toward the driver. New TFT instrument-panel displays and a much-needed premium infotainment display occupy some new space, surrounded by some upgraded trims. There are three different performance flavors of the 2015 Kia Optima. All three deliver responsive, economical performance. But what might come to a surprise to some who haven't been on the market for a car for several years is that there isn't a single V-6 to be seen; it's only four-cylinder engines under the hood -- well, that and some other special hardware like turbochargers and hybrid systems in some versions. At the base level, and on all but the SX model, you get a 200-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection. It's a little coarse when you need to access its full potential, but it works well with the six-speed automatic transmission because it's plenty perky in the mid revs. Those who would have chosen the V-6 in the past will not be plenty satisfied with the sporty SX model and its 274-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. And with the new Drive Select system that's included in the SX model, you get several modes that command different transmission shift points and steering weighting. Anyone who wants to make a big change in their petroleum habits will be quite pleased with the Optima Hybrid, with its electric-motor system and lithium-polymer battery pack that pair with a four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission (not a CVT). Last year the company made some subtle (but meaningful) changes

Tunisians voted Sunday in their first presidential election since the 2011 revolution that sparked the Arab Spring, in a ballot set to round off an often fraught transition to democracy. The favourite among 27 candidates was former premier Beji Caid Essebsi, an 87-year-old veteran whose anti-Islamist Nidaa Tounes party won a parliamentary election last month. Others vying for the presidency included outgoing President Moncef Marzouki, several ministers who served under ousted dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, leftwinger Hamma Hammami, business magnate Slim Riahi and a lone woman, magistrate Kalthoum Kannou. Whatever the outcome many Tunisians saw the election as a milestone in the history of the North African country, where for the first time they could freely choose their president. "This election is very important. It's the culmination of the revolution and something that we really should not pass up," said an electoral observer who gave his name only as Moez. Bechir Yahyaoui could hardly control his emotions as he voted in the Tunis district of Hay el-Khadhra, saying that for once he was "voting for who I want, with no pressure, no bribes". "Before (under Ben Ali) you had to go and vote, regardless of the outcome. This time the election is free and transparent," he said. But voting appeared slack and three hours after polling stations opened at 0700 GMT, officials estimated turnout at only 12 percent. Some 5.3 million people were eligible to vote, with tens of thousands of police and troops deployed to guarantee security amid fears Islamist militants might seek to disrupt polling day. Polling was restricted to just five hours in about 50 localities near the Algerian border, where armed groups are active, while polls elsewhere were due to close at 1700 GMT. A run-off vote will be held at the end of December if no candidate secures an absolute majority. Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa hailed the vote. "It's a historic day, the first presidential election in Tunisia held under advanced democratic norms," Jomaa said. "God willing, it will be a great festival of democracy." Tunisia has won international plaudits for largely steering clear of the violence, repression and lawlessness of other Arab Spring countries such as neighbouring Libya. - [CENSORED]ure at stake - Until the revolution, Tunisia knew only two presidents -- Habib Bourguiba, the "father of independence" from France in 1956, and Ben Ali, who deposed him in a 1987 coup. To prevent the emergence of another dictatorship, presidential powers have been restricted under a new constitution, with executive prerogatives transferred to a premier drawn from parliament's top party. Frontrunner Essebsi ran on a campaign of "state prestige", a slogan with wide appeal to Tunisians anxious for an end to instability. Supporters argue only he can stand up to the Islamists who first held power in the post-Ben Ali era, but critics charge he is out to restore the old regime, having served under both former presidents. "Long live Tunisia," Essebsi said as he cast his ballot at a polling station in a Tunis suburb, where he was among the first to vote. Marzouki, who has been hammering home the argument that he is the only leader capable of preserving the gains of the uprising, voted in the afternoon near the city of Sousse, south of Tunis. A group of protesters demonstrated against his bid for re-election but were kept at bay by police, an AFP reporter said. Critics have accused Marzouki of having forged a pact "with the devil" in 2011 when he joined a coalition with the moderate Islamist party Ennahda. Ennahda, which came second in the parliamentary election, did not put up a candidate and invited its members "to elect a president who will guarantee democracy". "The polls are an important turning point for Tunisia, the outcome of a whole process that will allow Tunisians to decide their [CENSORED]ure," said veterinary professor Jamel Shemli. Whoever wins, tackling the faltering economy will be a top priority, with unemployment, a leading cause of the revolution, running at 15 percent.
