The National Cyber Security Centre has said more organisations should reconsider the risk of using Russian technology, including anti-virus software. But in a blog post published today, it said that for most individual users it is safe to use Kaspersky's software. Germany recently suggested replacing Kaspersky anti-virus. The Russia-headquartered firm said the German warnings were "made on political grounds". Critical Infrastructure. In 2017, The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) announced it would write to all government departments, warning against using Kaspersky products for systems related to national security. But in today's blog post, the NCSC's Ian Levy wrote: "We have no evidence that the Russian state intends to suborn Russian commercial products and services to cause damage to UK interests, but the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." The centre is now urging more groups to reconsider their use of Russian controlled technology including: wider public sector organisations that weren't covered by its 2017 guidance organisations providing services to Ukraine organisations that if compromised could represent a PR 'win' for Russia organisations providing services related to critical infrastructure "We've not seen - and don't expect to see - the massive, global cyber-attacks that some had predicted," the NCSC's Ian Levy says in his blog. But the Ukraine conflict has changed the balance of risks. The UK already had advice from a few years back regarding use of products like Kaspersky anti-virus but this was confined to those involved in national security. German authorities issued a new tougher warning calling for Kaspersky products to be removed after the Ukraine conflict began, raising questions about whether the UK would follow. And the NCSC started to get phone calls from members of the public worried about turning their laptops on because they ran Kaspersky. That has now led to a broader warning that a wider range of institutions - like those in critical infrastructure or who might be the targets of Russian retaliation - should think carefully about using any Russian products. But this new advice still does not apply to the general public - who are not thought to be at direct risk. German warnings Earlier in March, Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) said that against the backdrop of the invasion of Ukraine and threats against Nato and the EU, Russian IT manufacturers could be forced against their will "to attack target systems, or be spied on as a victim of a cyber-operation without its knowledge or as a tool for attacks against its own customers," The BSI found no evidence of current problems with Kaspersky products but recommended its anti-virus products were replaced with alternatives - but carefully, to avoid weakening defences. In response, the firm said the BSI decision was "not based on a technical assessment of Kaspersky products", and as a private global cyber-security company it "does not have any ties to the Russian or any other government". It added: "The security and integrity of our data services and engineering practices have been confirmed by independent third-party assessments." But the German warning raised the level of public concern, which the NCSC has sought to address. "It almost certainly remains the case that nearly all individuals in the UK (and many enterprises) are not going to be targeted by Russian cyber-attack, regardless of whether they use Russian products and services" Mr Levy wrote. "If your personal laptop uses Kaspersky AV (or other products) it's highly unlikely to be directly targeted...it's safe to turn on and use at the moment." https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-60854882

A family-owned hardware store based in San Francisco has opened its first outpost in Palo Alto at 251 California Ave. Nob Hill Hardware, owned by longtime Menlo Park resident Mihail Fechete, is located in the space that was once part of a larger FedEx Office, which is now next door occupying a smaller footprint. The shop is set to hold a grand opening in May. Greeting customers are walls of pliers, ratchets, hammers and other tools that one might expect to find in a hardware store, but the store also has various selections of kitchenware, party supplies and other miscellaneous items. The store is in the process of stocking its shelves, Fechete said this week, but supply chain issues have delayed the arrival of some merchandise. The owner expects the size of the selection to match that of his San Francisco store, with around 10,000 items. "I love hardware stores," said Palo Alto resident Doria Summa, who was browsing the shelves at Nob Hill earlier this week. "It's very small, but it seems to have a little bit of everything." Help sustain the local news you depend on. Your contribution matters. Become a member today. Fechete said his San Francisco shop, which coincidentally is located on another street also named California, has been performing well, even in the midst of the pandemic, and so he decided to broker a deal for the 3,155-square-foot space on California Avenue in May 2020. People seemed to have had more free time during the pandemic and embarked on their own home improvement projects, he said. Fechete said the new location seemed like a great opportunity to introduce his business to people closer to home. He opened his first store in San Francisco's Nob Hill neighborhood in late 2007 after spending a lot of time in and out of hardware stores as a contractor for nearly a decade. Fechete said he hopes to provide goods that people may not always find at a mega-hardware retailer, including small items like shoe polish, buttons or needles, as well as expert advice. The opening of the independent hardware store is a pleasant, and somewhat unexpected, surprise. Hardware stores tend to disappear more than they pop up, said Steven Staiger, a historian at the Palo Alto Historical Association, who briefly worked at Cambridge Hardware near California Avenue in the 1970s before it closed in 1997. https://almanacnews.com/news/2022/03/29/with-diy-projects-on-the-rise-nob-hill-hardware-expands-into-palo-alto

LAHORE: PTI’s estranged leader Jahangir Tareen’s like-minded group, has summoned a consultative session today to discuss the situation after Usman Buzdar’s resignation, ARY News reported on Tuesday. PTI yesterday named Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi of PML-Q as its candidate for the office of Punjab chief minister. The group’s consultative session has been summoned on 6:00pm today at Jahangir Tareen’s residence. Six members, who had earlier assured support to outgoing CM Usman Buzdar, are expected to rejoin Tareen group, thus the strength of the faction will reach to 20 members again. Sources said that Tareen group could support the candidature of the PML-Q top leader, however, the final decision will be taken by Jahangir Tareen. After PML-Q leader’s nomination, a member of the Tareen group Faisal Jabboana told the media that Pervaiz Elahi is a suitable person for the position. He added that Jahangir Tareen group members had already met Pervaiz Elahi, however, the group is due to take the final decision. Another group of disgruntled PTI members led by former senior minister Abdul Aleem Khan has also summoned a consultative meeting today to discuss the situation. Aleem Khan will decide the strategy of the group after consultation with other like-minded members. It is to be mentioned here that a Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) MNA, Javed Latif yesterday revealed that his political party could nominate PTI dissident Aleem Khan for the office of Punjab chief minister. The PML-N MNA Javed Latif, while talking to ARY News programme Off the Record, said that Aleem Khan could be the party’s candidate for Punjab CM slot. Latif said that political parties will have to take some decisions in compulsion for being the coalition partners. https://arynews.tv/tareen-group-meetx-today-discuss-political-developments-punjab/

Christians around the world celebrate the fourth Sunday of Lent on March 27, 2022. Sometimes called Laetare Sunday, this special day in the Lenten season celebrates feelings of joy amid the more somber moments of Lent. (Laetare is a Latin word that means "to rejoice.") Jesse Bradley, pastor of Grace Community Church in Seattle, Washington, told Fox News Digital that although feelings of hopelessness loom for many in modern society — something he termed a "devastating tragedy" — believers worldwide can still have hope and even truly rejoice. WHAT IS LENT AND WHY DO WE OBSERVE IT? A recent American Psychological Association report revealed "unprecedented levels" of stress among Americans due to a variety of issues that include the war in Ukraine, the COVID pandemic and the challenging economy. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT: WE ‘SHARE IN THE SUFFERING’ OF UKRAINIANS THROUGH FASTING PRAYER Yet there is still very good reason to have hope, said Bradley. "People around the world are still drawing near to God," Pastor Bradley said in an emailed message. https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/fourth-sunday-lent-tragedy-rejoice

Samsung's M8 monitor, announced on Monday, is being positioned to replace your USB webcam and smart TV. The 32-inch 4K smart monitor has a wireless webcam that you can remove and attach via magnets. The TV also features built-in apps, including Netflix and Hulu, that work without a PC connection. The M8's 1080p webcam attaches to a holster in the camera via a four-pin connector, a Samsung rep told Ars Technica. The holster is connected to a port on the monitor, giving the camera power and connecting it to the PC. As such, it appears the camera won't work with another monitor. Once in place, you can tilt the camera or remove it for privacy when it's not in use. This differs from a magnetic, wireless webcam prototype Dell showed us in December. Dell's concept cam detached from the monitor so you could place it in the ideal location, such as the center of the monitor, for the perfect angle. Samsung's magnetic webcam attempts to help you find the perfect angle through face tracking and auto-zoom. The South Korea-headquartered company announced its first "smart monitor," the M7, in 2020. The displays earn the title by offering streaming services, like Amazon Prime and Apple TV, through an Internet connection, no PC or TV required. Like Samsung smart TVs and some Galaxy phones, the smart monitors also have the Samsung TV Plus app, which delivers some live TV channels, like Cheddar News, CBS News, and Stories by NBC over the Internet. Both Samsung's smart monitors attempt to make your TV jealous with their own remote. Differing from the M7's remote, the M8's doesn't include control for voice assistants, like Amazon Alexa and Samsung's Bixby. In an unusual move, the microphone is built into the monitor. For Bixby users, the Always On Voice feature will show "conversation information on screen when Bixby is activated, even if the monitor screen is turned off." Samsung's announcement said. Improvements over the M7 claim to be a 75 percent slimmer build that reduces the monitor's thickness to 11.4 mm. The smart monitors also have a new look, taking a page from Apple's similarly thin (11.5 mm) 24-inch iMac (11.5 mm) all-in-ones, offering an array of colors. If you're OK with a moderately striking white monitor, Samsung will charge you $700, but for any of the other colors, there's a $30 upcharge. Samsung also updated its SmartThings Hub, which lets you check on other devices connected to your Wi-Fi—although, you'll need a special dongle that comes out in April to use the app with Zigbee devices. The company also added Workspace, which lets you "remotely access another PC, use Microsoft 365 programs," and connect to Samsung Galaxy, Note, or Tab devices through the Samsung DeX platform. Panel-wise, the new Samsung USB-C (65 W charging) M8 monitor claims an impressive 3,000:1 contrast ratio, thanks to its vertical alignment panel, as well as up to 400 nits of brightness and 99 percent sRGB coverage. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/03/samsungs-new-4k-smart-monitor-has-a-magnetic-wireless-webcam/

Beaten-down software company Coupa Software (NASDAQ: COUP) was bouncing back in a big way on Monday, up nearly 12% as of 12:30 p.m. ET. While there was no company-specific news that came out today, another peer in the enterprise software sector was scooped up by a private equity firm over the weekend. After a 65% plunge from all-time highs about a year ago culminating in another brutal post-earnings sell-off last week, investors may be thinking Coupa could be the next software target to get scooped up. One would think Coupa's software sales would be booming right now, since its products help businesses optimize supply chains and connect businesses with suppliers. However, after a burst of digitization during the pandemic, some software companies are seeing things slow down as the economy normalizes. In addition, global inflation is pushing up interest rates, which are a killer for high-growth but unprofitable stocks such as Coupa. Yes, Coupa is posting break-even to slight profits on an adjusted basis, but when you factor in stock-based compensation, it still posted a $244 million operating loss according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in 2021. It also didn't help matters that Coupa guided for underwhelming growth for the current year during its fourth-quarter earnings report last week, which came in well below analyst estimates. Decelerating growth and higher interest rates are a killer combination for Coupa and other stocks like it. Still, with the stock now down below nine times this year's revenue estimates, could it be due for a bounce, or even a takeover? Over the weekend, private equity firm Thoma Bravo reached an agreement to acquire software peer Anaplan for roughly $10.7 billion in cash, representing a 30% premium to Anaplan's stock price as of Friday. Anaplan, which helps companies plan their financial and operational planning, was of similar size and function to Coupa before the deal was announced. Therefore, with Coupa down so much from its highs, it's not unreasonable to think it could become the next target for an acquisition by private equity at a similar premium. As much sense as this makes, investors should never buy stocks on the mere rumor or potential for acquisition, as it may not happen. Investors should assess Coupa based on its own merits. Less than nine times forward revenue would have been considered cheap for a software stock not too long ago, but with interest rates on the rise, that may no longer be the case. At some point, software companies will need to either reaccelerate growth or show a clear path to GAAP profitability to regain the market's favor. That may not happen with Coupa in the near future. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/topstocks/why-coupa-software-bounced-back-strongly-today/ar-AAVkpfA?ocid=BingNewsSearch

Apple could be on the verge of a broad business shift away from iPhone shipments to installed base monetization if rumors of a hardware subscription are true, according to an analyst. In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider, lead Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty writes that a rumored hardware subscription that would allow users to own an iPhone with monthly payments would "pivot the investor narrative away from transactional to recurring sales." Huberty says that the current average Apple pays only $1 per day for hardware and services. However, she believes that the average user would also be willing to pay more to access both Apple devices and software. As far as the difference between a hardware subscription and the iPhone upgrade program. A pure subscription service would do away with finite payment periods, for example, meaning that an iPhone owner would "pay a certain price per month into perpetuity to gain access to their device." To that end, Apple would likely debut multiple offerings at different pricing tiers. A lower-tier offering could allow access to a legacy iPhone every 24 months, while higher tiers could give users access to newer devices and other perks. "While there are a multitude of different bundles Apple can ultimately create with a subscription offering, the introduction of pricing tiers - as opposed to one flat subscription rate - that would allow Apple to capture each user's greatest willingness to pay based upon their consumption of Apple products and services," she writes. As far as the benefits of a subscription model, Huberty believes that it could reduce hardware replacement cycles, increase the spend per user, and spur adoption of first-party Apple services. It may shift more customers to a direct-to-consumer model by foregoing carriers or retailers. The analyst also believes Apple will offload repayment risks by continuing to partner with a third-party financing service. Apple already does that with Goldman Sachs for the Apple Card or Citizen's One for financing in the U.S. Huberty writes that Apple's leading retention rates and its expanding ecosystem have already created a platform. A move away from traditional transactional sales to recurring revenue would "drive meaningful upside to Apple's share price," she notes, given the lifetime value of an Apple user. The analyst is maintaining her 12-month Apple price target of $210. The price target is based on a 6x enterprise value-to-sales multiple (EV/Sales) on Apple's product business and a 10.6x EV/Sales multiple on Services, which implies a 33.2x target price-to earnings multiple. https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/03/28/apple-hardware-subscription-could-shift-focus-away-from-iphone-shipments

A Hebron woman charged with animal cruelty had about 30 dogs, 20 cats, and a couple of birds at the Hebron residence, which had "an overwhelming odor of urine and feces," a state police affidavit said. State police described the state of the home as "deplorable and unsanitary." The woman, Joann Connelly, 59, of Porter Road, was charged Friday with three counts of animal cruelty, for the cats, dogs, and birds in the home. She was held on $10,000 bond and was to appear in Vernon Superior Court today. The animals were seized, transported, and are receiving care. They all have predetermined adoptive homes, and the State Animal Control Office will be tracking the animals to ensure they're going to good homes, police said. Connelly is the owner of CT Pregnant Dog and Cat Rescue, a licensed animal importer. On the group's Facebook page, a post on Saturday said the nonprofit group has shut down. "Do to an unforeseen incident, CT Pregant Dog and Cat rescue will no longer be active. I am so sorry to all those who tried to help in every way they could. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to the CT Department of Agriculture," reads the post, which is signed, "Thank you Erin." In a later unsigned comment, the rescue apologized for what happened. "I am so sorry everyone. Joann just became overwhelmed with the number of animals she was trying to help," the post reads. According to state police, the home wasn't always in such poor condition. The affidavit supporting Connelly's arrest provides the following details: State police and the state animal control officer inspected Connelly's home in February 2020. At that time they found the home to be dirty, but not to the point that violated any health department regulations. The floors were dirty but not soiled with feces or urine, and there were five dogs in crates, for which Connelly had the proper paperwork. In February 2021, the state animal control was asked to check on a dog. Connelly never made the dog available to view, but submitted paperwork showing that it had been seen by a veterinarian and was doing better. Last September, authorities began getting complaints that Connelly had an excessive number of dogs at her residence, but they were unable to access the home until March, when authorities heard Connelly had moved out of the house and left the animals behind. Members of the state police and animal control visited the home on Wednesday, March 23. Upon entering, the smell of urine and feces was overwhelming. An officer standing 15 feet away could smell it when the front door was opened. Inside investigators found numerous dogs in cages in various rooms. The floors throughout were covered in urine, feces, newspaper, dog food, and dirt. The floors in the rooms housing cats were similarly covered in urine, feces, litter, and fur. Two parakeets were in another cage in a bedroom. That room was covered in bird waste and filth. The smell was so bad on the second floor of the home that an officer had trouble breathing while wearing an N95 respirator. Investigators also found a pony, two goats, and three geese outside the home. Where the three large animals were housed, fecal matter and hay had built up so much that it blocked about half of the doorway. State police believed that Connelly had more animals scheduled to arrive in the following days. Link: https://news.yahoo.com/police-hebron-woman-facing-cruelty-150400295.html

Wave of private space stations in the works to replace aging ISS For the past 20 years, commercial space companies have focused on ways of getting people and cargo to space. Now, they are turning their attention to creating destinations in space. With the International Space Station set to be decommissioned by 2030, NASA will transition from premier gatekeeper of U.S. access to the space station to become just one of many customers of private space stations in what many hope will be a robust low-Earth orbit economy. Currently, there are only two destinations in low-Earth orbit, the ISS and a smaller modular station being built by China. Within the next decade, NASA expects that to change. Speaking Tuesday during the Satellite 2022 conference in Washington, D.C., Blue Origin's senior vice president of the New Glenn program, Jarrett Jones, said the rocket would not fly from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station before the end of this year as previously planned. Details on a new timeframe were not offered. A Blue Origin spokesperson later confirmed Jones' comments and said the 322-foot rocket recently completed a design review but will not be ready in time to fly from Launch Complex 36 this year. "After completing our final design review and getting our agreements with our current customers, it won’t be the end of this year," the spokesperson said. "We’re communicating on a new date with our customers." NASA wants second lunar lander to compete with SpaceX NASA will choose a second company to develop a lunar lander to complement SpaceX's Starship to ensure a sustainable human presence on the moon. NASA last year selected SpaceX as its sole commercial partner to ferry astronauts to the lunar surface from an orbiting "Gateway" space station as part of the agency's Artemis program. NASA administrator, Bill Nelson, said he expects about one human mission to the moon each year after Artemis III, now set for 2025. “But beyond Artemis III we want to increase the healthy competition and advance our lunar capabilities to support more science, more exploration and an emerging lunar marketplace," said Jim Free, associate administrator for NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate. Shunning Russia OneWeb signs deal with SpaceX for satellite launches OneWeb, the parent company of a Space Coast satellite manufacturing facility, signed a deal with SpaceX to launch internet satellites that had previously flown on Russian Soyuz rockets. In a brief statement, OneWeb said last week said it entered into an agreement with SpaceX to fly its internet-beaming satellites starting later this year. The company did not offer details on pricing and did not say which of the sites – Florida or California – would host the launches. "Terms of the agreement with SpaceX are confidential," OneWeb said.
