Few business continuity and disaster planners ever envisioned setting up most of their employees in home offices almost overnight, as the COVID-19 pandemic caught IT unprepared. Procuring the laptops, headsets, monitors, printers, Wi-Fi routers, tablets, PCs, cabling, and other gear this newly distributed workforce required, set off a mad scramble as harried IT shops and procurement professionals frantically called, texted, and emailed every vendor on their lists only to be told time and again nothing was available. Eventually, the situation was remedied through a combination of relaxed — or hurriedly introduced — bring your own device (BYOD) polices, acquiring hardware locally, or having IT literally box up on-site hardware for employees to take home. "We didn't have a lot of pull directly with [our preferred vendor] Dell," said Brian Shea, CIO of MedOne Hospital Physicians, a mid-sized provider of clinical specialists to hospitals. "So, we'd go local, which, in my past life [as the CTO Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus], we would never do. Then we started using Amazon a little bit. We had more flexibility searching multiple vendors." In the two years since the initial response to the pandemic, hardware purchasing trends at the enterprise level have shifted to ensure companies don't neglect their hardware needs. They are moving purchasing away from fixed assets like desktop PCs in favor of more mobile gadgets, adjusting their provider strategy to match their needs. For many businesses, analysts expect, changes are here to stay. Many companies also provided employees with stipends so they can get what they need on their own, said Andrew Hewitt, a senior infrastructure and operations analyst at Forrester. This approach took the onus off of severely overworked IT departments to find, buy, and ship everything to their newly minted work-from-home workforce. "You basically saw enterprises go in about 10 different directions just trying to get something into the hands of people so that they could get their work done," said Hewitt. What companies bought Some IT shops went so far as to set up their customer service reps with thin clients so they could access virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), but most organizations opted for anything portable and that could run a web browser, Hewitt said. "We had one client, for instance, that was sending home thin clients along with hardware based tokens for authentication," he said. "They had to order a ton of tokens right at the beginning of the pandemic to enable that. Where something that was more cloud friendly, like a Chromebook or a personal PC, is going to have that authentication mechanism built into it." This move to portable devices represents a significant shift in hardware usage and buying patterns. Two-thirds of respondents to a recent Spiceworks Ziff Davis (SWZD) report, Hardware Trends in 2022 and Beyond, said desktop PCs were the primary computing device in their organizations in 2018. Four years later, 40% of employees are using laptops and 40% are using desktops. As a percentage of spend, companies today spend more on laptops than desktops. Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets also are being used as work devices today, particularly in Asia-Pacific and Latin American countries. "This reallocation of spending happened during the pandemic, with the shift to remote work serving as the catalyst," the study said. The report also found that, despite growth of cloud computing in all its forms – SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS during the pandemic – only about half of all workloads today are running the cloud. Despite reports of a stampede toward the cloud, half of workloads are still running in on-premises data centers and server rooms. Hardware spending as a percentage of overall IT spending decreased since the start of the pandemic, dropping from 33% in 2020 to 30% in 2022. Servers accounted for just 14% of spending in 2020 and that number is expected to drop to 11% in 2022. At the same time, cloud spending only increased moderately from 22% in 2020 to 26% of overall IT budgets in 2022, the report said. "But make no mistake: On-premises servers remain extremely important to organizations worldwide … on-premises and cloud infrastructure will co-exist and grow increasingly interoperable, allowing for greater portability and flexibility that will benefit organizations in a hybrid world," the report said. Change is here to stay For many companies, the old ways of doing business will not work anymore. Shea, for example, said he won't go back to relying on just one vendor. Being a mid-sized company with just a couple of hundred employees that buys hardware only as needed means they do not get the preferential treatment an enterprise-class customer would. "We have not moved back to using Dell … we will continue to buy peripherals through local sources or channels like Amazon. We're able to see the flexibility in pricing by looking across multiple suppliers." For most companies, hardware has become essential again. The pandemic showed reliance on non-mobile assets such as desktops or thin clients can create a lot of problems when global events spin out of control. Citing recent Forrester data, Hewitt said only 10% of companies plan to reduce hardware spending on PCs in 2022. This includes laptops, tablets, Chromebooks, and Macs. Half of businesses said they planned to increase their PC spending this year and 25% said they would remain the same. Auto supplier stocks rose on Monday after ratings initiation by Exane BNP Paribas. In a report released today, BNP analysts began coverage on Goodyear Tire & Rubber (NASDAQ:GT), Adient (NYSE:ADNT) and American Axle & Manufacturing (NYSE:AXL), with a Neutral rating. The price target on Goodyear (GT) was set to $12, implying a 7.4% decrease from last price. Analysts noted "Commodities are a headwind for GT, and while we believe there will be sufficient pricing, we remain on the sidelines until raw materials begin to deflate, leading to rapid margin expansion as pricing remains." Marina Ovsyannikova, the Russian TV journalist who interrupted a broadcast to protest the war in Ukraine, has a new job in Germany. Ovsyannikova had been detained and released after she went on a primetime broadcast of Russia's Channel One with a sign that read "You are being lied to." Ovsyannikova said her new employer "stands for what is being so vehemently defended by the courageous people of Ukraine on the ground right now: freedom." "I see it as my duty as a journalist to defend that freedom," she said. "And I am delighted to be able to do this now for WELT." In 2014, as Russia launched a proxy war in Eastern Ukraine and annexed Crimea, and in the years that followed, Russian hackers hammered Ukraine. The cyberattacks went so far as to knock out the power grid in parts of the country in 2015. Russian hackers stepped up their efforts against Ukraine in the run-up to the 2022 invasion, but with notably different results. Those differences hold lessons for U.S. national cyber defense. I’m a cybersecurity researcher with a background as a political officer in the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv and working as an analyst in countries of the former Soviet Union. Over the last year, I led a USAID-funded program in which Florida International University and Purdue University instructors trained more than 125 Ukrainian university cybersecurity faculty and more than 700 cybersecurity students. Many of the faculty are leading advisors to the government or consult with critical infrastructure organizations on cybersecurity. The program emphasized practical skills in using leading cybersecurity tools to defend simulated enterprise networks against real malware and other cybersecurity threats. The invasion took place just weeks before the national cybersecurity competition was to be held for students from the program’s 14 participating universities. I believe that the training that the faculty and students received in protecting critical infrastructure helped reduce the impact of Russian cyberattacks. The most obvious sign of this resilience is the success Ukraine has had in keeping its internet on despite Russian bombs, sabotage and cyberattacks. On March 21, 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden warned the American public that Russia’s capability to launch cyberattacks is “fairly consequential and it’s coming.” As Deputy National Security Adviser Anne Neuberger explained, Biden’s warning was a call to prepare U.S. cyber defenses. The concern in the White House over cyberattacks is shared by cybersecurity practitioners. The Ukrainian experience with Russian cyberattacks provides lessons for how institutions ranging from electric power plants to public schools can contribute to strengthening a nation’s cyber defenses. National cyber defense starts with governments and organizations evaluating risks and increasing their capacity to meet the latest cybersecurity threats. After President Biden’s warning, Neuberger recommended that organizations take five steps: adopt multifactor password authentication, keep software patches up-to-date, back up data, run drills and cooperate with government cybersecurity agencies. Access control Cyber defense begins with the entryways into a nation’s information networks. In Ukraine in recent years, hackers entered poorly protected networks by techniques as simple as guessing passwords or intercepting their use on unsecure computers. More sophisticated cyberattacks in Ukraine used social engineering techniques, including phishing emails that tricked network users into revealing IDs and passwords. Clicking an unknown link can also open the door to tracking malware that can learn password information. Neuberger’s recommendation for adopting multifactor password authentication recognizes that users will never be perfect. Even cybersecurity experts have made mistakes in their decisions to provide passwords or personal information on insecure or deceptive sites. The simple step of authenticating a login on an approved device limits the access a hacker can obtain from just gaining personal information. Software vulnerabilities The programmers who develop apps and networks are rewarded by improving performance and functionality. The problem is that even the best developers often overlook vulnerabilities as they add new code. For this reason, users should permit software updates because these are how developers patch uncovered weaknesses once identified. Prior to the invasion of Ukraine, Russian hackers identified a vulnerability in Microsoft’s leading data management software. This was similar to a weakness in network software that allowed Russian hackers to unleash the NotPetya malware on Ukrainian networks in 2017. The attack caused an estimated $10 billion in damage worldwide. Just days before Russian tanks began crossing into Ukraine in February 2022, Russian hackers used a vulnerability in the market-leading data management software SQL to place on Ukrainian servers “wiper” malware that erases stored data. However, over the last five years Ukrainian institutions have significantly strengthened their cybersecurity. Most notably, Ukrainian organizations have shifted away from pirated enterprise software, and they integrated their information systems into the global cybersecurity community of technology firms and data protection agencies. As a result, the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center identified the new malware as it began appearing on Ukrainian networks. The early warning allowed Microsoft to distribute a patch around the world to prevent the servers from being erased by this malware. Backing up data Ransomware attacks already frequently target public and private organizations in the U.S. The hackers lock out users from an institution’s data networks and demand payment to return access to them. Wiper malware used in the Russian cyberattacks on Ukraine operates in a similar manner to ransomware. However, pseudo ransomware attacks permanently destroy an institution’s access to its data. Backing up critical data is an important step in reducing the impact of wiper or ransomware attacks. Some private organizations have even taken to storing data on two separate cloud-based systems. This reduces the chances that attacks could deprive an organization of the data it needs to continue operating. Drills and cooperation The last set of Neuberger’s recommendations is to continually conduct cybersecurity drills while maintaining cooperative relationships with federal cyber defense agencies. In the months leading up to Russia’s invasion, Ukrainian organizations benefited from working closely with U.S. agencies to bolster the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure. The agencies helped scan Ukrainian networks for malware and supported penetration tests that use hacker tools to look for vulnerabilities that can give hackers access to their systems. Small and large organizations in the U.S. concerned about cyberattacks should seek a strong relationship with a wide-range of federal agencies responsible for cybersecurity. Recent regulations require firms to disclose information on cyberattacks to their networks. But organizations should turn to cybersecurity authorities before experiencing a cyberrattack. U.S. government agencies offer best practices for training staff, including the use of tabletop and simulated attack exercises. Rocky’s Ace Hardware has purchased a nine-store chain in and around Dayton, Ohio, in a deal that closed today. Rocky's began in Springfield in 1939, and the acquisition deal is the largest since the hardware retailer purchased eight stores in 1999, doubling in size at that time to 16 locations, according to President Rocco Falcone II. At the end of December, Rocky’s bought the one-location Karp’s Ace Hardware of Stamford, Connecticut. “We are a growth-oriented company,” he told the Springfield Republican this week. “We have plans for aggressive, comfortable growth.” Rocky’s now has 47 locations in nine states, and according to Falcone it is one of the country’s largest family-owned Ace Hardware dealerships. Most of its stores are in New England. It has four locations in Florida and one each in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. "It is very exciting for us to be expanding into a new state and continue the family-owned values and service Handyman customers have come to expect,” Falcone said in a release. “We are also family owned and share many of the same values as Handyman, including putting the customer first in all business actions.” Falcone’s grandfather started the first Rocky’s location in Springfield in 1926. Founded in 1939, Handyman is a full-service hardware store with two locations in Dayton and one each in Kettering, Fairborn, Xenia, Springfield, Centerville, Miamisburg and New Carlisle, along with a main office and centralized warehouse. It is owned by David Grimes, whose grandfather also opened the first location, 83 years ago. “Since my grandfather opened our first Rocky’s location in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1926, our team has understood the importance of customer service and serving the communities we are part of," he said. Russia’s central bank cut interest rates on Friday in a bid to cushion the economy from the impact of western sanctions, saying the recent rebound in the rouble had eased inflationary pressures. The Bank of Russia said it would lower its key interest rate to 17 per cent from its previous high of 20 per cent. It had more than doubled borrowing costs in late February in an effort to prop up the currency after the US and western allies responded to President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine with harsh financial measures including the freezing of a large chunk of its foreign reserves. With Friday’s unscheduled move, the central bank is shifting its focus to kick-starting Russia’s struggling economy now that efforts to stabilise the financial system appear to be bearing fruit, analysts said. “Today’s decision reflects a rebalancing of the risks of accelerating consumer price growth, declining economic activity and risks to financial stability,” the bank said. While it cautioned that “external conditions for the Russian economy” will “significantly limit economic activity”, it said risks to financial stability were no longer growing. It also said it had seen a slowdown in the rates at which prices were rising, “owing to the rouble’s exchange rate dynamics.” The rouble has rebounded from a steep decline immediately after the February 24 invasion as a result of stringent controls which curbed Russians’ ability to buy foreign currency and blocked foreigners from exiting their investments in Russia. The rouble traded at roughly 79 to the dollar on Friday, close to pre-invasion levels. The effectiveness of those measures means the central bank is less reliant on higher interest rates to support the currency, and can focus on supporting the economy through what is likely to be a bruising downturn, according to Sofya Donets, Russia economist at Renaissance Capital. “The recent appreciation of the rouble is an indication that capital controls are working. This is no longer an open economy but a closed financial system so interest rate policy will work differently,” she said. “There is a supply shock, a structural shock, to the economy so you will need to see supply chains being rebuilt. That relies on the availability of credit.” Economists at the Institute of International Finance have estimated that Russian gross domestic product will shrink by 15 per cent this year, wiping out a decade and a half of growth. A job fair for Sandusky County high school students will be held April 20 at the student union at Vanguard Tech Center, 1306 Cedar St. Hours will be 8:30-10 a.m. for Vanguard students and 10 a.m.-noon for county high school students. Elmore Kiwanis installs new sign ELMORE — The Elmore Kiwanis Club has installed a new electronic community message sign on the corner of Toledo and Rice streets. This new sign replaces an older letterboard that needed letters placed manually via a long handled suction cup. This new sign has been a goal of the Elmore Kiwanis Club for many years now and would not have been possible without the support and efforts of the Village Council, employees and the entire Elmore community. The final installation was made possible by a volunteer who fabricated an aluminum frame to stabilize the sign and village employees who took down the old sign (which was given to the Elmore Historical Society) and attached the new sign and frame to the pole. Alvin Roepke of Vision Quest made the "Elmore Kiwanis Club" with the International Kiwanis Logo above the sign. The purpose of the sign continues to be a "message board" for community events. GOOGLE is urging people to check their Google Maps today after the search giant rolled out a crucial software update. In a blog post, the U.S. search giant highlighted a number of handy new features rolling out to its navigation app in the coming weeks. There is now a more detailed map that shows the locations of road signals such as traffic lights and stop signs ahead. In select cities, Google will provide extra information such as the shape and width of a road. According to the company, the changes help you "better understand where you are and decrease the odds of making last-minute lane changes or missing a turn." Another update rolling out to users makes it easier to dodge unnecessary toll roads. Soon, you’ll see the estimated toll price to your destination before you start navigating. Maps achieves this using trusted information from local tolling authorities. Google said: "We look at factors like the cost of using a toll pass or other payment methods, what the day of the week it is, along with how much the toll is expected to cost at the specific time you’ll be crossing it." If you're not a fan of toll roads, Google will show you when a toll-free route is available. A new iPhone widget lets you access Maps from your Home Screen You can also head into the app's settings to choose to avoid seeing routes with toll roads completely. To do that, tap the three dots at the top right corner of your directions in Google Maps and select "Avoid tolls". Toll prices will show up on Android and iOS this month for users in the U.S., India, Japan and Indonesia, with more countries coming soon. Richelieu Hardware Ltd. posted a higher profit in its latest quarter amid a sharp rise in sales as the company added three new acquisitions to its network. The maker of specialty hardware and other products says net earnings attributable to shareholders was $30.1 million or 53 cents per diluted share for the quarter ended Feb. 28. The result compared with a profit of $21 million or 37 cents per diluted share in the same quarter a year earlier. Sales in the Montreal-based company's first quarter reached $384.5 million, up from $298 million a year ago. Richelieu president and CEO Richard Lord says the company completed the acquisitions of Compi Distributors of Missouri and Illinois, HGH Hardware Supply of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia, and National Builders Hardware of Oregon at the end of 2021. Hundreds of dogs were recently found dead at an animal shelter in Borodyanka, Ukraine, according to Ukraine animal rights organization, UAnimals. More than 300 dogs appeared to have starved to death, having been left locked in their cages and other enclosures without food or water, according to a Facebook post from UAnimals. "A few days ago we were shocked by the terrible news — more than 300 dogs died in the Borodyanka animal shelter," a translation of the Facebook post said. "All of them died of hunger and thirst," the post continued. "Volunteers who managed to reach the four-legged after the liberation of the village saved only a third of the shelter's residents, most of whom are now in critical condition for treatment." Volunteers took the surviving dogs to a clinic, though some died on the way, according to UAnimals. "The shelter suffered from the war, but the animals did not die from shelling and bombing," the translated Facebook post said. "They died a horrible death without food and water, locked in their cages." "We, UAnimals, can't ignore this," the Facebook post said. "All those responsible for the destruction of more than 300 lives lost must be punished." The president of NBC News has been forced to hold a meeting with staff outraged over the network's decision to hire Jen Psaki as an MSNBC host. Noah Oppenheim held the call with staffers at the network's Washington DC bureau over their fears that hiring the White House press secretary will tarnish the brand. According to CNN, Oppenheim told his journalists that Psaki would only appear on MSNBC, which is known for its left-wing opinion shows, and not NBC News itself, which bills itself as a neutral news network. She is said to have informally agreed to host an MSNBC show that'll be screened on the Peacock streaming service. One person who was on the call said: 'Here's what he was saying: They have perspective programming. This was done on the perspective programming side. Not anything that reflects on NBC News. A source inside NBC News told DailyMail.com. ‘Noah had absolutely nothing to do with the discussions with Jen.
