Navigating your way around Microsoft Teams could soon get a lot easier thanks to a new upgrade in the works. The video conferencing software has announced that it is working on an update that should "declutter" the Microsoft Teams user experience, making the software easier to move around in. "Tab actions are moving", the official entry to the Microsoft 365 roadmap states, adding that this will "help declutter the user experience". Tab actions in Teams Previously, tab actions in Microsoft Teams had been located in the tab header bar, which could sometimes lead to confusion and mis-clicking. The feature will now be relocated into the tap dropdown, hopefully cutting out any issues and making Microsoft Teams smoother to use. Clicking on the tab name will now show a dropdown menu, which will include the likes of Reload tab, Go to website, Copy link to tab, Pop-out tab, and About this tab. Microsoft notes that the change will impact all application tabs such as Assignments, Grades, Planner or the Website tab, and that desktop users will be the first to see the change. The upgrade is currently in development, but Microsoft is no slouch when it comes to Teams updates, so we could expect it to launch soon. The news is the latest in a series of changes to Microsoft Teams as the company looks to improve its software alongside the launch of Windows 11. This includes the rolling out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) support for Teams calls in an effort to further secure business comms when using the software. E2EE support for Teams calls means that now when both parties in a one-to-one call turn on E2EE in Teams, their calls will be encrypted from end-to-end and no other party including Microsoft has access to the decrypted conversation. You can check out our full Windows 11 review for more details. Looking to up your video conferencing game? We've built a list of the best headsets for conference calls

Today, Microsoft announced the next phase of delivering Windows 11 to more customers as it embarks on the big transition away from Windows 10. When Microsoft launched Windows 11 earlier this month, the company focused on delivering the operating system to two specific groups. The first group was brand new PCs shipping with Windows 11 preinstalled. The second group included new Windows 10 PCs eligible to receive the Windows 11 upgrade from Microsoft. Starting this week, the company is taking advantage of its “latest generation machine learning model” to “offer the upgrade to an expanded set of eligible devices.” Microsoft goes on to state, “We recommend that you upgrade your devices to Windows 11 to take advantage of the latest features and advanced protections from security threats.” Microsoft encourages everyone with PCs that meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 to upgrade ASAP to leverage all the latest features that it provides (including Android app support) and the latest security features. The enhanced security of Windows 11 is made possible by two of Microsoft’s most controversial requirements for installing the operating system: TPM 2.0 support and an 8th generation Intel Core/AMD Ryzen 2000 (or newer) processor. If you haven’t already done so, you can use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app to see if your Windows 10 PC is eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade. If you haven’t already downloaded the tool, the chances are that it will be force-installed on your system shortly via the newly released KB5005463 update. If your PC passes muster, there’s a good chance that Microsoft will soon offer the Windows 11 upgrade for your system. “If you have an eligible device, open Windows Update Settings and select Check for updates,” Microsoft added. “Once the upgrade is ready for your device, you will see the option to download and install.” Microsoft will continually tweak its machine learning model to deliver Windows 11 to even more Windows 10 PCs over the next few months. If everything goes according to schedule, Windows 11 will be offered to all eligible Windows 10 PCs by the first half of 2022. And if you don’t want to wait around for Microsoft to deliver Windows 11 to you automatically, you can take matters into your own hands by upgrading using our handy how-to guide.

Norton 360 for Gamers is a version of the Norton 360 security suite which is specifically aimed at you guessed it - gamers! But if all you're doing is playing games in the comfort of your own home, why should you need an antivirus tool? In this article, we break down in detail exactly how Norton 360 for Gamers helps to protect your PC, and what additional defenses are present for gamers in particular. Head straight through to Norton to find out more and subscribe Core antivirus protection Norton 360 for Gamers gives you the same core defenses against malware as the vanilla Norton 360 internet security suite. To be precise, you receive everything that subscribers to Norton 360 Deluxe get, plus the gaming extras we’ll come onto in the next section. That includes real-time protection to keep malware off your PC, on-demand scans, heuristics to detect freshly released threats, and dedicated anti-ransomware tech. As we found in our full Norton antivirus review, these combine to provide a very solid level of core protection. Norton puts its antivirus money where its mouth is, with the firm’s ‘virus protection promise’ that gives the customer their money back if a device is hit by malware which Norton’s experts can’t remove. Further protection is provided by some high-quality URL filtering to keep your web browsing safer, and Norton also implements an intelligent firewall. The latter is a very informative firewall that can help you make decisions on untrusted programs which are trying to use your internet connection – this is a pleasingly fresh and useful approach to firewall execution. Extras, extras… Those are the main defenses, then, but Norton 360 for Gamers also delivers the security suite extras found in Norton 360 Deluxe. That includes a backup facility with 50GB of cloud storage space, which could come in very handy if things go awry (always back up your important files, no matter how confident you are in the security of your PC). There’s also a password manager and webcam protection. Another nifty feature is a built-in VPN, which is far from standard with security suites. To be precise, this is Norton Secure VPN and while it might be a relatively basic VPN service, it’s solid enough and a great bundled inclusion adding to the value proposition here. Using a VPN for gaming helps to protect your privacy and anonymity online, with other benefits such as geo-blocking. That enables you to, say, stream content you wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. A VPN can also help you avoid the likes of DDoS attacks, which can be aimed at you to bog down your internet connection and ruin an online gaming session. Dark Web Monitoring keeps an eye out for any of your personal details or data being involved in a data breach, because the knowledge that something has been spilled online can enable you to react quickly and keep your accounts secure. Finally, those with children will appreciate the parental control system. This is a seriously good package to protect kids when they’re online, with all manner of content filtering and the ability to set time limits on device usage, as well as thorough location tracking facilities to keep tabs on your offspring not just online, but in the real world via GPS too. Gaming goodies On top of all the above, Norton 360 for Gamers offers a number of extras targeted specifically at those who enjoy PC gaming. We’ve already touched on the Dark Web Monitoring feature, which with the gaming suite is extended to also cover gamer tags and accounts, helping to keep these safe from exploits by nefarious types who may come across your leaked details. Gamers running Windows also get the benefit of fewer notifications from Norton, with the suite able to detect when you’re running full-screen apps like games, only interrupting you if something critical happens like your PC being actively under attack. The biggest gaming-related feature though, is the Game Optimizer. This allows Norton 360 for Gamers to intelligently allocate CPU resources to the game you’re playing in Windows to get better performance. The caveat is that it doesn’t work with every game, but supports titles run via the Epic Games Store and Steam, plus game launchers from Bethesda, Blizzard, EA (Origin), Rockstar, and Ubisoft (Uplay). And bear in mind that you’ll need a quad-core CPU to use this feature, but most gamers these days will have one of those in their gaming PC. How does Norton 360 for Gamers protect your device? As we’ve seen, Norton 360 for Gamers delivers a whole raft of protection. From its core anti-malware measures (and specialized ransomware and web protection), through to security features like an intelligent firewall and integrated VPN. That VPN can help defend against the likes of DDoS attacks aimed at gamers (or even the terrible practice of ‘swatting’, which is trying to call in a SWAT team or similar tactical response unit on false pretences), and the Dark Web Monitoring is a great extra to keep all your gaming accounts more secure. Overall, Norton 360 for Gamers provides a commendable level of all-round protection and some nifty gaming-related extras for Windows users, particularly as Norton claims that its optimization feature can help some games run faster. It’s well worth considering as a security package for those keen on gaming, with the main compromise compared to Norton 360 Deluxe being that Norton 360 for Gamers only supports three devices, rather than five. Both offerings are pitched at around the same price typically, and at the time of writing, Norton 360 for Gamers is a touch cheaper.

Two Chinese supercomputers have already broken the notorious exascale barrier, but their developers prefer to stay quiet about it for now. Both systems are reportedly based on China's homegrown Phytium and Sunway processors and therefore do not use crucial technologies developed outside of Tianxia. If the information is correct, then China is ahead of the U.S. in exascale supercomputing, but there is a catch. Almost a Year Ahead Two systems in China achieved 1.3 ExaFLOPS peak performance and around 1.05 ExaFLOPS (or higher) sustained performance in Linpack benchmark in March 2021, reports NextPlatform. However, neither of the machines is currently listed in the global Top 500 list of supercomputers as their developers do not want subcontractors of their partners to get into trouble with the U.S. government. NextPlatform says it got the information from a source from the U.S. that knows what is going on in China. If the information is accurate, China has beaten the U.S. by almost a year with its exascale system as Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility's Frontier supercomputer will only start operations in late 2021. Yet, there are some factors to consider. Frontier's target performance is about 1.5 TFLOPS, which is almost 50% higher when compared to the sustained performance of China's exascale supercomputers. Furthermore, Frontier is projected to consume around 30 MW of power, whereas one of its rivals from China has a power consumption of about 35 MW. Last but not least, Chinese developers use existing architectures developed for PetaFLOPS-scale systems and workloads, which may not be optimal in the future. Sunway Architecture The first Chinese exascale system is located at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi. The supercomputer, called Sunway Oceanlite, was designed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology (NRCPC) and is based on proprietary hybrid manycore Sunway processors discussed in connection with exascale machines earlier this year. The Shenwei/Sunway CPU architecture has been around since 2016, when the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer powered by 40,960 Sunway SW26010 processors was launched. The SW26010 CPU uses four heterogeneous clusters(core groups CG) interconnected using a high-performance network-on-chip. Each CG features a protocol processing unit (PPU), one management processing element (MPE) with a 256-bit vector engine, and 64 compute processing elements (CPEs) with the same 256-bit vector engine and a DDR3 memory controller. In total, each SW26010 has four MPEs and 256-bit CPEs that support coherency and run at around 1.5 GHz. China envisioned that by increasing the number of MPE and CPE cores per CPU and altering their architecture (e.g., by adding support for 512-bit vector instructions to CPEs), it would be possible to build a foundation for up to a 4 ExaFLOPS supercomputer using Sunway architecture. The report says that NRCPC engineers doubled the number of cores per processor (to 520 cores?) to double the performance per socket and produced their new CPU using a modern process technology to keep power consumption in check. Then they doubled the number of nodes, introduced a new interconnection system and possibly a new storage system to get to 1.03 sustained ExaFLOPS using 42 million 64-bit RISC cores. A clear advantage of such an approach is that NRCPC retained a familiar architecture that can process both existing and upcoming high-performance computing (HPC) workloads that require FP64 or mixed precision for AI/ML workloads. Meanwhile, that doubling of cores per socket and the number of sockets led to a 35 MW power consumption. This power consumption level is not tremendous, but it shows that the Oceanlite supercomputer is considerably less energy efficient than ORNL's Frontier. Phytium Architecture China's second exascale supercomputer is the Tianhe-3 machine located in the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, China. The system is powered by Armv8-based Phytium 2000+ (FTP) processors primarily designed for traditional HPC workloads with full FP64 precision and the Matrix 2000+ (MTP) DSP accelerators. There is no information about the sustained performance of Tianhe-3, but its Rpeak performance is reportedly around 1.3 ExaFLOPS and its Rmax performance is comfortably above 1 ExaFLOPS. It is also unclear how much power this supercomputer consumes. Architecturally, Tianhe-3 resembles Tianhe-2A (launched in 2015) that relied upon Phytium's FT-2000 CPUs and Matrix 2000 DSP accelerators. To get above 1 ExaFLOPS, developers had to increase the number of processors and accelerators, which probably involved making new silicon with more cores and processing elements made using a thinner fabrication process. Without many details about Tianhe-3 available, it is hard to say how exactly it got to exascale class, but all we can say is that Phytium's architecture from 2015 was scalable enough. The Catch To develop two of the world's first exascale supercomputers, scientists from the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi and the National Supercomputing Center from Guanzhou decided to play it safe and rely on existing architectures. As a result, developers from Sunway Microelectronics (or Shenwei Microelectronics) and Tianjin Phytium Information Technology have successfully designed appropriate chips and produced them using contemporary nodes. It is unclear which process technologies were used to make the new chips though we can speculate about proven 14nm/16nm-class processes that have good yields and usage not under close watch by the U.S. government. It is also unknown whether China-based SMIC or Taiwan-based TSMC makes the chips. Still, both companies have their advantages: the former cannot be controlled by the U.S. authorities in any way, whereas the latter has proven HPC-oriented libraries for its N16 node. China's exascale supercomputers may not be very energy efficient, but if they are indeed used to develop new weapons, power consumption is the last area of concern for their operators. They may also not efficiently scale to 2 ExaFLOPS or 4 ExaFLOPS, but they have plenty of performance to offer today. Furthermore, if their manufacturing is primarily localized, China can build more exascale supercomputers to become more competitive in various spheres. Tianjin Phytium Information Technology and Sunway Microelectronics (or Shenwei Microelectronics) are on the U.S. Commerce Department's Entity List, making it extremely hard for them to develop brand-new architectures state-of-the-art chips for future exascale supercomputers. With that said, while China might be the first to get to 1 ExaFLOPS, it may stay there for a while. 1.03 ExaFLOPS is plenty of computing horsepower, but the supercomputing race is accelerating, and only time will tell how fast companies like AMD, Intel, and Nvidia develop technologies enabling 4 ExaFLOPS or 10 ExaFLOPS systems for the U.S. and Europe. But China's supercomputing capabilities will remain quite formidable for at least a couple of years from now.

At its WebexOne virtual event, Cisco has unveiled its next-generation online collaboration tool for hybrid work which aims to make video conferencing more immersive. Webex Hologram is the industry's first real-time meeting solution that leverages augmented reality headsets to combine the meeting functionality of Cisco Webex with immersive 3D holograms. According to the Cisco Hybrid Work Index, 64 percent of employees agree that the ability to work from home directly affects whether or not they stay at a job or decide to leave. For this reason, organizations will need to increasingly offer flexible work arrangements if they wish to retain top talent. However, remote work poses a challenge for teams that require hands-on collaboration in a number of fields including design and manufacturing which is why Cisco has created Webex Hologram. EVP and general manager of Cisco's security and collaboration division, Jeetu Patel provided further insight on the company's new offering in a press release, saying: “Our mission at Cisco is to empower the 3 billion digital workers on the planet to participate equally from anywhere in the world. Webex Hologram represents a large step toward our mission of delivering a delivering a work experience so seamless that there is no gap between virtual and in-person collaboration.” Webex Hologram In addition to hybrid work, pandemic safety protocols have also heightened the need for enterprises to offer immersive virtual meetings and training sessions. For instance, when a new surgical device is introduced in the healthcare industry, physicians, technicians, sales and support teams need to be trained on it quickly. With Webex Hologram, this training can be done remotely to save time and travel expenses while providing the ability for a hospital's staff to see the surgical device from every angle and at its actual size just like if they were in the room with it. Unlike 2D and other virtual meeting experiences, Webex Hologram enables a feeling of co-presence by delivering photorealistic, real-time holograms of actual people. Presenters can even share both physical and digital content in a way that allows users to co-create and collaborate. Webex Hologram is also compatible with a number of existing AR headsets such as Magic Leap and Microsoft HoloLens. While we'll likely hear more about Cisco's new collaboration tool for hybrid work once it's ready to launch, businesses interested in trying it out for themselves can visit this site now to request to be part of the pilot.

TSMC today announced a refinement of its N4 manufacturing process. Termed N4P, the new node brings about tangible Power/Performance/Area improvements over N4, bringing another manufacturing option to TSMC's cadre of clients. The technology joins TSMC's staple of offerings, covering many N - the company has nodes on N5, N4, N3, and now N4P technologies. First tape-outs on N4P are expected to materialize by the second half of 2022. TSMC quotes that N4P further improves N4's performance by around 6%. While this is likely not significant enough for any prospective client to scale from N4 to N4P, it is more interesting for clients on less modern fabrication nodes (even N5) to rake in more benefits than by going N4. At the same time, this creates an interesting cadence of clients for TSMC. Companies rarely rearchitect or develop their designs for every successive manufacturing node. Nowadays, taping out a new chip for a new node means an investment to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, meaning that TSMC now has more nodes through which to distribute their clients than if it were scaling vertically. TSMC does say that N4P will bring tangible improvements over N5, though, and they provide more data for that comparison than against N4, which is limited to performance estimates. For example, compared to N5, N4P will deliver an 11% performance boost, a 22% improvement in power efficiency, and a 6% improvement in transistor density. Importantly for customers, TSMC says that N4P features a simplified (and cheaper) manufacturing process, requiring fewer masks and less wafer turnaround time. Additionally, TSMC says it sought to maximize design compatibility between N4 and N5, reducing the cost of completely porting designs over to a new node. "With N4P, TSMC strengthens our portfolio of advanced logic semiconductor technologies, each with its unique blend of performance, power efficiency and cost. N4P was optimized to provide a further enhanced advanced technology platform for both HPC and mobile applications," said Dr. Kevin Zhang, Senior Vice President of Business Development at TSMC.
