  3. Source: Tourism and Events, Queensland Want to get a fish eye’s view of the Great Barrier Reef but don’t have a boat? Ride-share company Uber Technologies Inc.announced on Thursday that it’s launching a new feature called ScUber, allowing customers to book a submarine trip through the Uber app in Queensland, Australia. The ScUber experience will be available from May 27 to June 18, initially from Heron Island off the coast of Gladstone in the Southern Great Barrier Reef region, and then from the coast of Port Douglas in Cairns, from June 9 until June 18. For A$3,000 ($2,068), the experience includes being picked up from, and dropped off at, your location via the Uber app, then a helicopter ride to the launch point (either Heron Island or Port Douglas), a one-hour ride in the ScUber submarine, and a half-day of snorkeling and touring the Great Barrier Reef. The ScUber passes a wreck off Heron Island. Source: Tourism and Events, Queensland The submarine service is designed to support the protection of the coral reefsystem through Uber’s new partnership with the organization Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef. Uber is no stranger to nontraditional marketing stunts, having previously ventured into ice cream delivery and a service called UberKittens, which allowed customers to request a playdate with kittens to support the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The company is also working to develop a flying taxi via a partnership with Aurora Flight Sciences. The submarine offering comes after Uber’s initial public offering flop on May 11; shares plunged immediately after trading opened and fell as much as 8.8% from its IPO price of $45 per share by the end of its first day. The stock price is downabout 10% from the IPO figure amid flareups in U.S.-China trade negotiations and the recent dismal performance of rival Lyft Inc. The remains are thought to be the 7th and final victim of a 35-year-old Cyprus army captain. TA Cyprus police official says divers searching the bottom of a lake have discovered the remains of what authorities believe to be the remains of a 6-year-old girl that a serial killer has confessed to killing. The remains are thought to be the 7th and final victim of a 35-year-old Cyprus army captain. (AP Photo/Philippos Christou) NICOSIA, Cyprus — A two-month search for the victims of a confessed serial killer in Cyprus came to a close Wednesday when divers discovered the decomposing body of his youngest victim in a lake. The discovery of the remains of the girl, believed to be 6-year-old Sierra Grace, brings to an end the search that began when an army captain confessed to killing seven foreign women and girls on April 25. Fire Department Chief Marcos Trangolas told The Associated Press that the remains, which were wrapped in a bed sheet and tied by rope to a cement block, were found among reeds six meters (20 feet) down the lake that was part of a former copper pyrite mine. He said divers had searched the exact spot where the 35-year-old suspect pointed to investigators earlier Wednesday while on site. Police have said they've found no evidence to suggest the suspect has killed anyone else, but investigators are still trying to track down anyone who had been in contact with him online. The army officer, who police haven't formally identified yet, had been in contact with several of his victims through online chat rooms. He is widely acknowledged to be Cyprus' first serial killer. The chance discovery of the body of Sierra Grace's mother, Mary Rose Tiburcio, 38, down a flooded mineshaft on April 14 triggered an investigation that led to the suspect through his online communications with the Filipino woman with whom he had had a six-month relationship. The body of Arian Palanas Lozano, 28, also from the Philippines, was found down the same shaft six days later. The killings took place over 2-½ years starting in September 2016 with the disappearance of 36-year-old Romanian Livia Florentina Bunea, and her 8-year-old daughter Elena Natalia. Their bodies were found inside suitcases at the bottom of a toxic lake that was part of another copper pyrite mine. Another body, believed to belong to Ahita Khadka Bista from Nepal, was found down a dry well in a military firing range. The suspect is due to appear in court Friday, but it's unclear whether investigators will ask for another custody extension or formally charge him. Bunea and her daughter will be buried Thursday in a village outside the capital Nicosia. The Cyprus government has said it will cover the funeral and burial expenses of all the victims.

  16. A helicopter crash-landed on the roof of a midtown Manhattan building Monday, sparking a fire and killing one person believed to be the pilot, New York City officials said. Mayor Bill de Blasio said there was no indication that the crash was an act of terror, and he said there were no injuries to anyone in the building or on the ground. "I want to just say, thank God for that. This could have been a much worse incident," he said. The helicopter took off from the 34th Street heliport at about 1:32 p.m., NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said, and it crashed on the roof of 787 Seventh Ave. about 11 minutes later. A fire broke out when the helicopter crashed, and the FDNY reached the roof and put out the fire quickly, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. Preliminary information is that only the pilot was on board the Agusta A109E helicopter when it crashed on the roof of the building, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said. The Agusta 109E is an eight-seat, multipurpose helicopter manufactured in both single and twin-engine variants. FAA air traffic controllers did not handle the flight, and the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation, Bergen said. "The helicopter is pretty obliterated at this point," de Blasio said in an interview with CNN. "It was obviously a very hard hit, there was a fire on top of that. There's not much left of that helicopter. But look, we don't know what happened and why it happened, this is very unusual." O'Neil said the pilot has been preliminarily identified but officials are working to confirm that and notify his family before releasing his name. He could not answer when asked if the pilot made an emergency call from the helicopter. "That's part of the investigation, to see if there was any contact made with air traffic control," he said. 'You could feel the building shake' Several witnesses in the building said they felt the building shake and then were told to evacuate. At the time of the incident, moderate to heavy rain was falling in the city and visibility at Central Park was down to 1.25 miles. Winds were from the east at 9 mph. Lance Koonce said he heard something that sounded like a helicopter flying very low, and when he looked out the window he saw a sheet of flame and smoke. "It was over pretty quickly, and even the smoke did not last long," he said. Nathan Hutton, who works in the building, told reporters about the chaos in the building as people tried to evacuate. "It took a half hour to get from the 29th floor down to the ground floor. There were just too many people, it was too crowded, and everybody was trying to get off on all the floors at the same time," he said. "You could feel the building shake, and you could actually hear the alarms." He said when alarms went off, security told people to evacuate the building via the stairs and not the elevators. "We could feel it when it hit but no one knew what it was," he said. Cuomo said the incident brought back memories of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks for New Yorkers. "If you're a New Yorker, you have a level of PTSD from 9/11," he said. "And I remember that morning all too well. So as soon as you hear an aircraft hit a building, my mind goes where every New Yorker's mind goes." President Donald Trump tweeted that he had been briefed on the crash. "Phenomenal job by our GREAT First Responders who are currently on the scene. THANK YOU for all you do 24/7/365! The Trump Administration stands ready should you need anything at all," he tweeted. The FDNY said firefighters climbed to the top of the 51-floor building to put out the fire US Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, who represents the area in Congress, said the building at 787 Seventh Ave. was not equipped with a helipad. She called to ban non-essential helicopters from Manhattan. "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high," she said. The NYPD closed much of midtown Manhattan to pedestrian and vehicle traffic after the crash, reopening the streets around 4 p.m.
