Microsoft Edge’s Beta has just had the Collections feature enabled, meaning that hopefully it won’t be long before this functionality reaches the release version of the browser. Collections first appeared as an official option (rather than a feature flag) in the Canary and Dev (earlier preview versions of Edge) builds back in December 2019, so it’s good to see it progress to the Beta (specifically, version 81.0.416.12). Microsoft Edge opens add-ons store I’m sick of Chrome eating all my RAM – it's time to ditch it... We’ve picked out the best web browsers of 2020 If you’re not familiar with Collections, the feature gives you the ability to save web pages in groups which are, as you might guess, called Collections. You can then easily open these groups at your convenience, representing a step forward in terms of better organizing your web browsing. As Microsoft explains: “Collections is now available [in beta]. You can get started by clicking the Collections icon next to the address bar. This opens the Collections pane where you can create, edit, and view Collections. We designed Collections based on what you do on the web. If you’re a shopper, a traveller, a teacher or a student, Collections can help.” Essentially, you can create a collection for anything – just give it a name, and group relevant sites under that umbrella. Imminent release? Hopefully at this point, the functionality should be working pretty smoothly, and with any luck, it’ll be arriving in the full release version of Microsoft Edge before too long. The new Beta also comes with various other additions, including support for Dolby Vision playback in websites, and tweaks for the dark theme. Microsoft also made a telling improvement to Edge recently in terms of speeding up the browser. In fact, the company claims that recent optimizations mean that Edge now offers something like 13% faster performance, a pretty chunky uptick. Microsoft’s hope is that the revamped Edge will soon enough be a challenger to the dominant Chrome browser (as you’re probably aware, Edge adopted the same Chromium engine).

Diagnosis adds weight to possibility that group of South Korean tourists may already have been infected when they were in Israel A Korean Air flight attendant who recently visited Israel and the United States has tested positive for COVID-19, South Korean media reported Tuesday. The cabin crew member flew to Ben Gurion Airport aboard the flight that brought some 200 South Korean pilgrims to Israel, many of whom were later confirmed to have the virus. The flight attendant’s diagnosis adds weight to the possibility the group may already have been infected when they were in Israel, although the incidents could be separate. After leaving Israel on February 16, the flight attendant then flew to Los Angeles and back to Seoul’s Incheon Airport on February 21, before being diagnosed with the coronavirus and entering quarantine, according to the wow.co.kr news website. Korean Air announced that a member of its flight crew had tested positive for the virus, but did not give any further details on the employee’s travel itinerary, Reuters reported. South Korea announced Tuesday it had 977 cases of coronavirus and 11 deaths — the largest official national total outside China. The Foreign Ministry on Sunday urged Israelis not to visit Japan and South Korea over fears of exposure to the COVID-19 virus, also recommending that Israelis currently in South Korea consider leaving the country. South Korean visitors left Israel en masse on Sunday amid coronavirus concerns after the number of cases mounted in their home country and a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered that all South Koreans in Israel be quickly flown out of the country. On Saturday the Health Ministry said the group of South Korean pilgrims recently in Israel had tested positive for the coronavirus, sending hundreds of Israelis who were in proximity to the travelers into home quarantine. Some 200 Israeli students and teachers were instructed to enter isolation due to being in several tourist sites at the same time as the group. The South Korean tourists were diagnosed upon returning home. According to Seoul, 29 of the tourists tested positive for the virus. The Israel Airport Authority (IAA) said in a statement Monday morning that 622 Korean nationals had left the country since Sunday night, and that between 800 and 900 still remained in the country. Many have arrived at Ben Gurion Airport, where they were forced to spend the night after they were rejected by hotels and by residents of a settlement near Jerusalem where they were supposed to be quarantined on an adjacent army base. Israel has banned all foreign nationals who have been to South Korea and Japan in the past 14 days from entering the country. Israel is also denying entry to visitors from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand and Singapore, and is apparently the only country to have taken such drastic steps so far to contain the virus. Israeli citizens returning from South Korea and Japan or who were there in the last 14 days must quarantine themselves at home for two weeks upon their return, the ministry said.

The right free word processor will make everyday work faster and easier, so we've rounded up the very best options available right now. You might be able to manage without a spreadsheet tool or something for making slideshows, but text documents are unavoidable. Thankfully, you don't need to splash out on a full Microsoft Office subscription; there are some superb word processors available to download and use completely free. Here we’re looking at the very best word processors that can be used offline (particularly useful for distraction-free writing), but there are also several excellent browser-based tools to consider if you'd rather do your writing online. Google Docs is the most obvious choice, and has the advantage of saving your work automatically so you don’t have to worry if your connection fails. It’s also a good choice for collaborative working, and means you don’t have to upload work to a separate cloud storage service. However, it has a limited selection of templates, there’s no way to import content from other Google applications, and any online tool is going to be surrounded by distractions like social media. If you'd prefer an offline word processor, read on – the perfect one is only a click away. 1. WPS Office Free Writer Interface almost identical to Word Excellent file format support Free cloud storage Contains some ads If you’ve used a modern version of Microsoft Word, there’ll be no learning curve when you switch to Writer – the word processing component of WPS Office Free. This free word processor looks and behaves almost exactly like its premium counterpart, and even has its own equivalent of OneDrive, offering 1GB free cloud storage. Its selection of pre-installed templates gives you everything you need for common document types, and you can easily create your own for bespoke tasks. It’s compatible with every text file format you can think of, including current and legacy versions of Microsoft Word dating back to Office 97. WPS Office Writer is supported by discrete ads, which can be removed by upgrading to the premium version, but they’re barely noticeable and no features are locked behind a paywall. Overall, WPS Writer is very impressive, and in our opinion it’s the best free word processor available to download today. WPS recently launched a free PDF to Word converter as well, which is a great companion to its word processor. 2. LibreOffice Writer Excellent format compatibility Document template galleries Support for plugins No ads or paywalls LibreOffice is a fork of Apache OpenOffice, and the two offer very similar word processing apps, but LibreOffice receives more frequent updates and has a more lively userbase, so we're inclined to lean in its favor. The word processor, Writer, is a feature-packed analog of Microsoft Word, packed with all the tools you could need for any text-based work. The two versions of Writer include wizards and templates for common document types, such as invoices and letters, and it’s easy to create your own templates for future use as well. The word processors also work together with the other office software in their respective suites – so you can use Base to create a bibliography, for example. Both word processors support all the most po[CENSORED]r file formats, and can export documents to PDF without the need for additional software. If you’re looking for a word processor that can stand in for Microsoft Word, either of these two will be a perfect candidate. 3. FocusWriter Blocks out distractions Timers and alarms Auto-save function Not ideal for editing If you simply want to hammer out some words without worrying about formatting, you could just use Windows’ built-in Notepad app, but FocusWriter is full of clever tools that will help you maximize productivity without ever getting in the way. As the name implies, FocusWriter blocks out all distractions so you can give that all-important first draft your full attention. In normal use, all you see is a blank page – toolbars are only visible if you move your mouse pointer to the edge of the screen – but there’s a killer feature in Focused Text, which fades everything into the background except the current paragraph or sentence. FocusWriter also features alerts that are triggered at certain times, or when you’ve reached a predefined word count, so you don’t need to worry about watching a counter (as you would in Microsoft Word). This also makes FocusWriter a good tool to use in tandem with the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working hard for a period of time that’s long enough for you to work productively, but not so long that you become fatigued. It’s not great for editing, but for productivity, FocusWriter is hard to beat.

If you resort to deleting apps when your phone's storage space is full, researchers have a solution. New software "streams" data and code resources to an app from a cloud server when necessary, allowing the app to use only the space it needs on a phone at any given time. "It's like how Netflix movies aren't actually stored on a computer. They are streamed to you as you are watching them," said Saurabh Bagchi, a Purdue University professor of electrical and computer engineering, and computer science, and director of the Center for Resilient Infrastructures, Systems and Processes. "Here the application components, like heavy video or graphics or code paths, are streaming instantly despite the errors and slowdowns that are possible on a cellular network." Bagchi's team showed in a study how the software, called "AppStreamer," cuts down storage requirements by at least 85% for po[CENSORED]r gaming apps on an Android. The software seamlessly shuffles data between an app and a cloud server without stalling the game. Most study participants didn't notice any differences in their gaming experience while the app used AppStreamer. Since AppStreamer works for these storage-hungry gaming apps, it could work for other apps that usually take up far less space, Bagchi said. The software also allows the app itself to download faster to a phone. AppStreamer is a type of software known as middleware, located between the apps on a device and the operating system. The middleware automatically predicts when to fetch data from a cloud server. AT&T Labs Research provided data from cellular networks for this study to help evaluate which bandwidths AppStreamer would use and how much energy it would consume. AppStreamer could help phones better accommodate 5G connectivity—high-speed wireless cellular networks that would allow devices to download movies in seconds and handle other data-heavy tasks much faster than the 4G networks currently available to most phones. Using AppStreamer on a 5G network would mean that an app downloads instantly, runs faster and takes up minimal space on a phone. The researchers also designed AppStreamer to use "edge computing," which stores and sends data from edge servers. These servers, located in spots such as cellphone towers, are closer to a device compared to the cloud. The shorter distance reduces data download time. Bagchi's lab researches ways to make edge computing more reliable. Bagchi wrote on those challenges in an article recently published in Communications of the ACM. The researchers believe that AppStreamer could be good for more than just phones. In order for self-driving cars to respond to their surroundings more safely, they would need to reliably pull data from servers in milliseconds. Middleware such as AppStreamer could eventually supply this functionality through edge computing on a 5G network.

Google has announced its timeline for ending support of Chrome apps, meaning another headstone will be needed for the company’s graveyard. The number of products Google has killed off has become something of a joke within the tech industry, but few people will miss Chrome apps like some of the others (shoutouts to Google Wave and Google+) Chrome apps were intended to function like regular apps in that they open in their own window. However, most people today are using standard web apps or Progressive Web Apps. Google clearly isn’t seeing the engagement with Chrome apps that it expected at launch – there’s even less need for them on Chrome OS itself now the platform natively supports Android apps. ChromeOS will still be one of the last platforms to lose support for Chrome apps. Windows, macOS, and Linux will all lose access to Chrome apps first. Here’s Google’s timeline for ending Chrome apps support: March 2020: Chrome Web Store will stop accepting new Chrome Apps. Developers will be able to update existing Chrome Apps through June 2022. June 2020: End support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Customers who have Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade will have access to a policy to extend support through December 2020. December 2020: End support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux. June 2021: End support for NaCl, PNaCl, and PPAPI APIs. June 2021: End support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS. Customers who have Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade will have access to a policy to extend support through June 2022. June 2022: End support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS for all customers. Anthony Laforge, Technical Director, Chrome Platform Team, wrote in a blog post: “On behalf of the Chrome team, we thank the community of developers for building great experiences using Chrome Apps and look forward to seeing similar experiences that leverage open Web standards (e.g., PWAs) across all modern browsers.” So, to summarise, Chrome apps will no longer be available on Windows, Mac, and Linux by December this year. For Chrome OS, they’ll be kept alive until 2022.
