  1. Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC Release date: 5 October 2018 Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US It feels like it was only last year that the Assassin's Creed producers discovered the benefits of taking a year out, with the critically acclaimed Assassin's Creed Origins. That's because it was last year, and yet here we are again with Odyssey, due out just 12 months later. That might ring alarm bells, but everything we've seen of the ancient Greek game actually looks pretty brilliant, and it was enough to convert even an AC sceptic when we went hands-on at E3.
  2. An atmospheric and action-oriented trailer for ninja warrior game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has been released in advance of the 2018 Tokyo Game Show. The studio behind the hit Dark Souls franchise and PS4 exclusive Bloodborne is preparing to release Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in March 2019. Stealth, athleticism, and proficiency in combat against oversized enemies, both human and bestial in nature, can be seen in this most recent trailer, released in advance of the 2018 Tokyo Game Show, which runs Sept 20-23. Also evidenced within the reel's two-minute runtime is an emphasis on swift navigation of the game's grand spaces, whether leaping up walls, flying from tree to rooftop via a grappling hook winch, or whirling away from powerful strikes. The game is to be published by Activision, the company behind Destiny and Call Of Duty. Established in 1986, Sekiro developer From Software gained international recognition through the success of 2009 PlayStation 3 cult hit Demon's Souls. International fan demand for exported copies of the notoriously demanding medieval action adventure helped secure distribution of the Japanese game. That led to From's development of Dark Souls, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III for PlayStation, Xbox and Windows PC platforms; Bloodborne was received as a variation on familiar themes for the PlayStation 4. Prior to that, From was previously best known for the Armored Core combat robot franchise, including a multiplayer spinoff Chromehounds. Hidetaka Miyazaki, central to the development of entries to the Dark Souls and later Armored Core series, is the director on both Déraciné and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The game's title, Sekiro, refers to the main character's status as a one-armed warrior. – AFP Relaxnews

  4. Ferrari’s 488 GTB had perhaps one of the toughest design mandates possible in supercardom. It had to replace one of the most loved Ferraris of modern times, the 458. And, try as it might—Maranello’s flat-plane crankshaft made the carryover and it revs hard till 8,000 or so rpm—it still lacked some of the personality of its fire-breathing predecessor. Oh, the GTB boasted substantially more horsepower than the 458 but it didn't quite have the personality. Faster, yes, but not nearly as sonorous. So, I suspect then, that even though the power upgrades Ferrari is trumpeting are dramatic—50 more than the GTB—I suspect that the improvements to the Pista’s joie de vivre will be more important to the tifosi. So, here’s what’s new about the latest, track-ready 488, why it’s so technically advanced compared with the GTB and, perhaps most importantly, how super it really is. The Pista is really fast. Now you might be thinking that I’m just stating obvious, what with the 488 being a Ferrari and, well, a supercar. But we’re talking extra super-duper fast here, as in barely two seconds slower around Ferrari’s Fiorano test track than Maranello’s own 949-hp LaFerrari. The 7.6 seconds it takes to scoot to 125 miles per hour are just 0.2 seconds slower than Porsche’s 918. I’ll remind everyone that both of those hypercars feature hybrid powertrains and more displacement. By any measure, the 488 Pista is quick. Rated at 710 horsepower, it boasts 50 more horsepower than the GTB. Torque is up modestly—567 lb-ft versus 560 lb— mainly because all of the Pista’s extra oomph occurs at high rpm, the GTB matching it pony for pony till about 6,500 rpm. That extra urge at elevated rpm is immediately apparent. Not only does F154CD version of Ferrari’s twin turbo 3.9-liter V8 rejoice at engine speeds when the GTB starts to fall flat, but it also zings there with far more alacrity, as if it has a lighter flywheel (which it does) and bigger turbochargers (which it doesn’t). Reduced turbo lag To reduce turbo lag, Ferrari has taken a unique approach. the Pista incorporates new cam timing, which bleeds off a little incoming charge at the end of the exhaust stroke. This, along with new intercoolers, a new intake tract and improved air intakes at the front skirt. This cools the intake charge sufficiently so that the 488 can run higher compression, jam more fuel into the combustion chamber at the beginning of the intake stroke, and run more boost, all without suffering the detonation, a limiting factor for high-performance turbocharged engines. It even has individual speed sensors for each turbocharger that ensure that both of the titanium-aluminum turbines are turning at the same speed and that they are always maintain a minimum speed for optimum throttle response. There are also more detail changes inside the engine that give the Pista its “personality.” Basically, the F154CD, in Pista guise, has undergone a radical internal Weight Watchers program. Everything that moves inside has been shaved, hollowed or otherwise lightened. The crank itself is down some 1.2 kilograms thanks to the elimination of the central balancing webs. The flywheel is down another 1.5 kilos. Titanium connecting rods are 220 grams lighter each. The intake valves are now hollow. It adds up to a reduction in intenal rotational inertia of 17 percent, which, I suspect is responsible for the Pista’s 458-like eagerness to rev. Ferrari claims that there’s eight decibels more of its vaunted exhaust music directly audible to the driver. All speed and no drama would make the 488 a dull ride. Credit tubular, rather than cast, exhaust manifolds with equal-length runners for part of the more musical exhaust note. The manifolds are much thinnner than the GTB’s headers, which guarantees that said music is heard. For those lamenting the loss of the 458’s Wagnerian exhaust, rejoice. The Pista is almost as operatic. Firm ride As for the rest of the Pista’s comportment—like ride and handling—our test was thwarted by a squalling snowstorm that would have done the northeast proud. Yes, in Italy. Yes, in the spring. It was so cold, in fact, that Ferrari’s public relations mavens insisted that the Pista would have to run on winter tires, the Michelin Sport Cups specifically designed for it are simply too stiff in these cold climes to serve as anything other than giant hockey pucks. In other words, while I got a good sampling of the Pista’s engine dynamics, the same can’t be said for its road-holding. What I can say is that the Pista’s suspension is decidedly firm, but thanks to magnetorheological adjustability, the damping was not overly harsh on some surprisingly bumpy Italian roads (it’s been a harsh winter overall it seems). Also, Ferrari’s latest Side Slip Control system did an admirable job of containing all that power in conditions better suited to dog sleds and snowball fights. For more than that, you’ll have to wait for our full-fledged road test later this summer, hopefully with seasonal driving conditions. What we can say is that the Pista is the 488 invigorated. In fact, I will pay it the highest possible compliment I can to a turbocharged supercar: It’s almost as much fun to drive as the 458.

  6. A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a way for individuals and companies to protect your personal data and identities. VPNs are used to block your IP address and redirect it somewhere else. This is useful for blocking parties from tracking your data and browsing habits, or viewing websites or services that may not be available in your area. VPNs also give you an extra level of security against government agencies or hackers, especially when using a public Wi-Fi service. Some VPNs allow employees of a company to gain access to company resources outside the office. There are many VPN services for you to use which are both free and paid. Using a VPN is as easy as installing the software on your computer, tablet, or even smartphone and launching the application. Part1 Getting a VPN Turn on your computer and connect to the Internet. If you are at home, your computer should connect automatically. If you are working someplace other than home, such as an airport or coffee shop, you may need to manually connect to the Internet if you have not connected from that location before. Since you don’t have a VPN yet, be careful of which public Wi-Fi you connect to. It’s best to close any sensitive applications like email until you are secure.[1] Decide between a paid VPN and a free VPN Software. VPNs are offered in both paid and free versions, and both have merits. You may not need a full scale VPN if you simply want to access Netflix or BBC iPlayer from different countries, or you want to make sure that your social login information is safe while at a coffee shop; you can get typically what you need from a free service. However, if you are looking for more comprehensive encryptions that hide all your activity from government surveillance or disallow data trackers from advertising companies, you may need a paid service.[2] Be aware of free services as some will add unwanted toolbars, third-party applications, and place third-party ads on websites you visit. There are plenty of trustworthy free VPN services like VPN Gate, TunnelBear, ProtonVPN, Windscribe, Cyber Ghost and Starter VPN. Note that most free options offer a data limit for free before charging you for more data, sell users data to third parties, add loads of in app ads or label free trial as a free plan. But some of the VPN services, such as ProtonVPN, as stated in their website, has no privacy-invading ads, no malware, no bandwidth limits, and does not secretly sell user data. However, it also has some limits, such as access to the servers and devices you can use simultaneously. Most VPNs also work across Windows, Mac, tablets, and smartphones. VPNs can also be used within a company to connect everyone privately and protect sensitive company data. Download your desired VPN. Navigate to the website for your desired VPN. You should see a download button on the homepage, or a link in the page’s navigation bar for downloading. Click the download button and follow the prompts to download the version for your operating system. If you need a VPN for work, contact your company's IT department to get the VPN software. You will need to install the client software onto your computer to access your company's servers. Your IT department will determine if your computer is compatible with the VPN software, help you make your computer compatible if it is not, and help you install the software and configure your access to the VPN. Many VPN softwares offer options for downloading to iOS and Android. If you are on the company’s website on your computer, click the link for your phone’s operating system. You will be directed to your phone’s app store. If you are not on your personal computer and want to download a VPN directly to your smartphone, go into your phone’s app store and search for the VPN, downloading directly on your phone. Install your VPN Software. Once you have downloaded your VPN software to your computer, locate the downloaded file. Open it and follow the prompts to install and start. Some VPNs like CyberGhost are ready to use right away without creating an account. Other VPNs require you to sign up with an email address. On a Mac, you will typically launch the .dmg file and be asked to drag the application into your Applications folder. If you’re computer is password protected, you will be asked to input your password upon first launching. On Windows, you will typically run the .exe file and follow the installation prompts. Once you have installed your VPN, launch the application from your Start menu. On your smartphone, launch the app from your home screen. You will be asked to login with your account or create one if you don’t have an account already Read the terms of use. If you’re using a VPN for personal use, make sure you read the terms of use. Some VPNs, especially free ones, might install third-party applications, or give you a data limit. Make sure you are educated on what your VPN is providing you, what it is requiring of you, and what kind of information it collects.[3] Search online forums, such as Reddit, to see what others have said about a particular software. Launch your VPN software. Once you have downloaded and installed your VPN, it’s time to start it up. Locate your application from your Applications folder, Taskbar, or desktop/home screen. On Windows, you may have an icon on your desktop or you may need to click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen and select the program from the Taskbar or the Programs menu. On a Mac, you can find your VPN application in your ‘’’Applications’’’ folder. Follow the instructions. Most VPN applications will give you easy to follow prompts that get you started if this is your first time using the software. Some services like CyberGhost don’t require you to do anything but click the big yellow button in the center of the application. Other’s like TunnelBear ask you to set up an account. You can also edit your preferences to tailor your experience.[4] Most applications give you the option to automatically connect upon startup of your computer. You may also have the option for TCP overrides. This override means that if your internet service provider throttles your connection, you can choose to force your VPN to use a TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) which is more stable, though sometimes a bit slower.[5] Enter your username and password when prompted. If you don’t have an account you may have to sign up. If you are using a company's VPN, or most personal software, this will grant you secure access to your network. At this point, operations vary depending on how your company has configured its VPN access. The VPN software may open a new window that looks like your desktop at work, also known as a virtual desktop, where you can access your company resources. Or, you may need to launch your web browser and enter a secure web address where you can access your company's resources. If your VPN session does not launch a virtual desktop, your IT department should provide you with instructions for accessing your resources. Run your VPN. Now that you are signed up and logged in, you can begin running your VPN to protect your identity, access protected files on a network, or access websites and content not available in your country. You can also change your settings to allow your VPN to launch automatically and connect to a random network, or you can choose when and how you connect. If you are using a free VPN, most likely you’ll only get a certain amount of data to use per month. Or you may be restricted to a time limit. For these reasons, it’s best to only activate your VPN when you need to secure your IP address. For example, you may want to use your VPN when on a public Wi-Fi like at a coffee shop, but not use it home. Or consider choosing VPN providers that do not limit your data as mentioned above. You can use your VPN to watch Netflix in a different country, allowing you access to movies and shows that you may not get normally. VPNs that let you choose where you’re browsing from, by changing your IP address, allow you to pick a country that you want to view from. If you’re in the UK, you can change your location to somewhere in the U.S. to view the American Netflix.[6] Go to Hola.org and install Hola to your browser. Hola is a collaborative (P2P) network that comes as a browser extension. You can install Hola to your browser easily for quick and free VPN access. [7] Hola works on Macs and PC's as well as iOS and Android. You can download it to your computer or through the App store. Or, you can install the extension to Chrome, Firefox, and Opera for quick use. Hola reroutes some of your activity through a peer to peer network and helps to mask your true IP address. It doesn't completely reroute it as other VPN applications do but is effective for its ease of use. Once on the homepage, click the blue button that says "Get Hola, it's Free!" Follow the prompts for your browser or device to install. Enable Hola. Once you have Hola installed, you will see a button on your browser's toolbar. It is identified by a little flame with a smiley face. Click it to activate the Hola service. If Hola is off, the flame will be grayed out and you will see that it says "Off". Click the icon and then wait for a popup box to load. Click the button on the center of the dialogue box to activate Hola. Click your desired country. Upon activating Hola, you will have the option to browse from various countries. This is how the Hola's VPN service masks your IP address. Click the "More" option to open a list of all the countries that are available. Once you click a country your page will reload and will act as if you are browsing from your desired location. This is useful for not only protecting your identity, but also to access websites that may not be available in your region. Use Hola to get access to sites you otherwise couldn’t. In addition to routing your IP address and hiding it, you can also use Hola as a quick way to watch Netflix as if you’re in another country. You can also access other sites restricted to your region. Not everyone gets access to the same content on Netflix due to licensing restrictions. The U.S. has the largest library of content online but doesn’t have some of the content that other countries get. For example, you can go to Netflix and activate Hola to then watch as if you’re in another country. If you’re outside the U.S., click the browse from U.S. option. If you want to watch something on the British Netflix that you don’t get in the U.S., click the browse from United Kingdom option. Good luck guys
  7. In May, it was reported that Google workers were quitting over Google's involvement with a Pentagon project called Project Maven. Eventually, a petition made the rounds with Google workers demanding that the search giant sever ties with the military project. A new report is making the rounds that claims Googlers are quitting in protest to the relaunch of Google search in the Chinese market. ack Poulson, identified as a senior Google research scientist in the research and machine intelligence department, quit in protest of Google's plans to launch a censored version of its search engine in China. The Chinese government has notoriously tight control over internet searches within the country to keep its po[CENSORED]ce from unfettered access to information the government deems inappropriate. Poulson claims to be one of about five workers who left Google over the censored Chinese search engine project dubbed Dragonfly. Poulson claims that it was his "ethical responsibility to resign" and that his resignation was a "protest of the forfeiture of our public human rights commitments." Dragonfly has allegedly been in the works since 2017 and gathered steam after a meeting between Google CEO Sundar Pichai and an unidentified Chinese official in late 2017. Presumably, the Google workers quitting in protest want the search giant to kill the project. China is a massively important market for many tech firms. It has one of the largest and fastest growing po[CENSORED]tions of technology and internet users in the world. Companies want to get into the market as it grows, but government regulations often force these companies to abide by laws that people from other countries find unsavory. Google has made no official comment on the resignations.
  8. NVIDIA's new generation of GeForce RTX graphics cards are in the hands of reviewers, and today the NDA lifted on a full and exhaustive breakdown of the underlying Turing architecture, including all the new features and goodies that are underneath the hood. Performance numbers will have to wait for another day, at least officially. Unofficially, there are some leaked scores on 3DMark of the GeForce RTX 2080. What makes this leak particularly interesting is that it purports to show the performance of the GeForce RTX 2080 with a newer GPU driver package, version 411.51, which presumably has been optimized for the RTX cards. The 411.51 driver release is not yet available to the public—NVIDIA just recently starting pushing out its 399.24 driver release that is optimized for Shadow of the Tomb Raider—but you can bet that reviewers are testing the new cards with fully supported drivers So, what do we have here? The leaked benchmark shows the GeForce RTX 2080 posting an overall score of 10,147 in 3DMark's Time Spy test, and an isolated graphics score of 10.659. This is with the memory clocked at 7,000MHz (14,000MHz effective) and GPU running at 1,875MHz. Those scores are higher than what a standard Titan Xp or GeForce GTX 1080 Ti achieve in the same benchmark. That said, the scores are significantly higher, at least from our own collection of Titan Xp and GeForce GTX 1080 Ti benchmarks. It's also worth mentioning that the reported 1,875MHz clockspeed is higher than the 1,710MHz boost clock on regular GeForce RTX 2080 cards, and overclocked 1,800MHz boost clock on the Founders Edition variant. According to frequent leaker and Twitter user APISAK, the card's graphics score in Fire Strike score is 27,000. We don't have a collection of scores of our own to compare with, but based on other results in the 3DMark database, the Fire Strike graphics score is not as impressive—it's roughly in line with a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. Bear in mind that none of these figures are official. We'll save our full analysis for when we post our own scores, after the NDA lifts.
  9. US President Donald Trump has instructed staff to move forward with the next round of tariffs on Chinese goods, US media have reported. The tariffs are expected to apply to about $200bn worth of imports from China, including electronic parts and consumer goods such as handbags. It remains unclear when the new import taxes - which could be as high as 25% - will go into effect. Officials are reportedly still working on the final list of products. President Trump ordered his staff to start preparing the tariffs this summer, escalating a dispute over what the US says are China's unfair trade practices, such as state subsidies. The new duties would add to tariffs the US has already imposed on $50bn in Chinese goods as part of that dispute, as well as tariffs that China levied on $50bn in US goods in retaliation. Friday's news reports that Mr Trump has ordered the US to proceed with further tariffs quoted administration sources. There has so far been no formal announcement. However, Mr Trump has repeatedly signalled his willingness to impose the new duties, despite warnings from economists and widespread opposition in the US among the business community. On 7 September, Mr Trump said tariffs on $200bn in goods "could take place very soon" and added that tariffs on a further $267bn in goods were "ready to go on short notice if I want". The White House and office of the US Trade Representative did not respond to requests for comment. Bloomberg News, which first reported the president's decision, said a public order had been delayed as the administration revises the final list of products. US stocks sank on the news. Talks to resolve the matter ended without resolution this spring. Some in the administration are trying to restart discussions to defuse the trade war, but Mr Trump said on Thursday the US is under "no pressure" to strike a deal.

  18. Aston Martin Teases Rapide E EV Packing 600 Horsepower And 200-Mile Range If James Bond ever goes green, you can bet the EV that Aston Martin is teasing would be his ride of choice. The first time that Aston started to talk about building an EV was way back in 2015, when it converted a Rapide to an EV aiming for a 200-mile driving range. Fast forward a few years and Aston is now teasing a production version of the Rapide E and giving up some details on the powertrain ahead of production kicking off next year. We can’t glean any detail from the teaser image other than the blue "E" on the front fenders and snazzy wheels with blue brake calipers peeking out. Details on the powertrain confirmed include that the car will have a battery electrical architecture with 800V and that the battery pack will be a 65kWh unit. That is smallish compared to the battery packs that Tesla uses in its Model S P100 packing 100kWh of juice and over 300 miles of driving range Aston Martin says that its battery pack is a lithium-ion unit that has over 5,600 18650 format cylindrical cells inside. The car has two rear-mounted motors that produce a combined output of a bit over 610PS (around 600hp) and 950Nm (about 700 ft-lb) of torque. That's not the 800hp that Aston Martin promised back in 2015, but it should provide all the performance a driver needs for car of its size. Aston claims that the battery pack provides over 200 miles of driving range on the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure. The 800V battery system will accept a charge rate of 100kW, or higher says Aston. That should mean faster battery charging than most EVs on the market. As for performance, Aston claims a top speed of 155mph, under 4-seconds 0-60mph, and the ability to go from 50-mph to 70-mph in 1.5 seconds. One key promise from Aston Martin is that the performance figures it's quoting aren’t only available when the battery pack is fully charged. Aston says that level of performance will be available at all battery charge states. Aston goes so far as to claim that the car can do a full lap of the Nürburgring with no derating of the battery and can cope with "daily demands of repeated hard acceleration and braking." The first production run for the Rapide E will be 155 units with the first deliveries set for Q4 20
  19. A new study suggests that ingesting even a single piece of plastic can be deadly for sea turtles. Researchers found there was a one in five chance of death for a turtle who consumed just one item - rising to 50% for 14 pieces. The team found that younger turtles are at a higher risk of dying from exposure to plastic than adults. The authors say their research raises concerns over the long term survival of some turtle species. The never ending surge of plastic into the world's oceans is taking an increasing toll on iconic marine species. While it has been relatively straightforward for researchers to document the threat to animals who become entangled in plastic and drown, determining the impact of consumed plastic is much harder. The authors of this study estimate that around half of all the sea turtles on the planet have ingested plastic - this rises to 90% among juvenile green sea turtles off the coast of Brazil. To determine how this exposure was impacting the species, the researchers looked at post mortem reports and animal stranding records relating to sea turtles in Queensland. From that information they were able to deduce the role of plastic in causing death - if an animal had ingested more than 200 pieces of plastic, death was inevitable. Fourteen pieces meant a 50% chance of dying - while one piece gave a 22% chance of mortality. "Because of their digestive tract, they don't regurgitate anything," lead author Dr Britta Denise Hardesty from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), told BBC News. "If it ends up in the wrong place, even one little thin, filmy piece of plastic can block that canal and mean that nothing can pass and ultimately the blockage can result in death." As well as causing blockages, harder pieces caused internal injuries which often lead to death as well. The research team also found that younger turtles were taking in far more plastic than adults. Around 23% of juveniles and 54% of post-hatchling turtles had ingested plastic compared to 16% of adults. The scientists say that this greater susceptibility is down to where they live and how they feed. "Young small turtles actually drift and float with the ocean currents as does much of the buoyant, small lightweight plastic," said Dr Hardesty. "We think that small turtles are less selective in what they eat than large adults who eat sea grass and crustaceans, the young turtles are out in the oceanic area offshore and the older animals are feeding in closer to shore." While sea turtles can live until they are about 80 and reproduce for decades, researchers are concerned for the longer term impact of so many juveniles consuming so much plastic. "We know that disproportionately finding it more in younger animals who won't make it to the reproductive state will have long term consequences for the survival of the species," said Dr Hardesty. "It's very concerning." Other experts in this field say the new study is an important step towards quantifying the scale of the threat that plastic poses to the lives of sea turtles. The authors offer a very defensible framework for allowing us to measure the mortality risk resultant from plastic ingestion," said Prof Brendan Godley, from the University of Exeter, who wasn't involved with the study. "It also points to the likelihood that plastic may be a key threat to the smallest life stages. This is of particular concern as pieces of plastics and baby turtles are both likely to be aggregated together in similar areas." The authors of the new study want to raise awareness among consumers and political leaders about the threat from plastic and to encourage creative solutions to the issue. One option may well be a plastic tax or deposit scheme. "Let's rethink our relationship with plastic," said Dr Hardesty. "Let's put a true cost on plastic so they have a similar value to aluminium cans which we don't find lost in the environment, they get picked up and they don't get mismanaged and find their way out into the ocean," she added.
  20. When Microsoft rolls out its big update for Windows 10 in October, there will be a new and annoying popup for users who try and install Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox on their machines. Word comes from beta testers of the update report the screenshot below pops up if you try and install a competing browser on your PC. The popup notes that users already have Edge as part of Windows 10, and claims that it is the safer and faster browser. While the popup tries to talk users out of installing the alternative browsers, it will still allow you to install the other browsers if you click the “Install Anyway” button. There is a button that allows users to open the Edge browser instead of installing Firefox or Chrome. The issue that Google and Firefox may take with this warning is that the wording insinuates that the other two browsers are less safe than Edge. Prompts of that sort can be turned off by using the link under the buttons on the popup. This is an escalation in the war between Edge, Chrome, and Firefox. However, there are similar prompts that are shown to users not on Edge already. Considering the po[CENSORED]rity of Chrome and Firefox, Microsoft’s tact to shame users into using Edge isn’t going to be well received. Microsoft wants Windows 10 users to use Edge and Bing search so badly, that they offered to pay customers to use them in 2016. Years later, Microsoft still lacks the market reach that it wants. Beta testers are likely to be vocal about this in your face marketing for Edge and only time will tell if it ends up in the final version
  21. At long last, Nintendo is just days away from rolling out its online service for its hybrid Switch console. Nintendo plans to flip the switch, so to speak, on September 18 (next Tuesday), and will be offering up a free 7-day trial to peruse the service before committing to a paid subscription, which will start at $3.99 per month. Longer commitments come with price breaks. In addition to the $3.99 per month plan, Nintendo will offer a discounted three-month membership for $7.99, and an annual plan that runs $19.99. In addition, users will be able to select a 12-month family membership for $34.99. Those who sign up for a family membership can invite up to seven others to join a family group. The new Nintendo Switch Online service is similar to Xbox Live in that it will be required to play certain games online, such as Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis Aces, and Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido. Users who own multiple Switch systems do not need to purchase separate online accounts, they just have to sign in. Of course, purchasing an online subscription is not mandatory, and there will be some online services that operate without one. "Online features including Nintendo eShop, Friend registration and management, the sharing of screenshots over social networks, Nintendo Switch Parental Controls, system and software updates, and Nintendo Switch News will not be affected by the launch of the Nintendo Switch Online paid service," Nintendo say As an added bonus, Nintendo is offering up a selection of classic NES games with online play to those who subscribe to the service. There will be 20 games initially, including Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and several others. The online service is rolling out alongside a new system update, version 6.0.0. It will go out around 5PM Pacific (8PM Eastern), at which time the Nintendo eShop will be under maintenance for a "brief period of time," Nintendo says. If all goes to plan, it will be a three-hour window. The update is required before purchasing an online plan. You can pre-order a 3-month or 12-month subscription right now from Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop.
