  2. A good dark theme for your computer and other devices is worth its weight in gold to many users. Google is looking to add a little dark magic to Chrome, and its initial rollout will be very limited. Google Chrome users can already download third-party dark themes for the browser right now, but Chrome is getting a native dark mode with a caveat. That caveat is that the native dark mode will work on macOS only. There is speculation that the native dark mode might come to other Chrome users later, but that is unconfirmed for now. Apple will begin supporting a system-wide dark mode with macOS 10.14 Mojave, which is currently in beta and will be released this fall. Support for the dark theme was spied in a recent comment for Chrome on macOS that reads "add command line switch to force dark mode." A discussion on the topic over on the linked bug report sees a developer with the handle "lgrey@chromium.org" talking about implementing support for macOS dark mode and noting that it's not going to be ready in time for the M70 release but stating "we should try to get it in for M71." The M70 release landed in stable beta this month and brought support for Android and Mac fingerprint scanners. Stable Chrome 71 is expected to land on December 4th. Chrome developers will certainly have to work on the dark mode and figure out a way for people using it, once implemented, to tell the difference between it and incognito mode. Perhaps if the dark mode proves po[CENSORED]r, devs could roll it out to all versions of Chrome on all operating systems, including Windows and Linux.
  3. AMD and Intel have recently reignited a processor war after the former had gone years without offering competitive processors with respect to overall performance. That all began to change when AMD launched the Ryzen parts that have been well received by enthusiasts and have come in at price points well under what Intel is offering. Things aren't going well for Intel right now as it is reportedly facing difficulties producing some of its new CPU The shortages of Intel Whiskey Lake parts are so severe that it is impacting overall notebook shipments and forcing DRAM prices down as an overabundance of memory is dealt with. Intel's woes are a blessing for AMD as the chipmaker has a golden opportunity to stick Intel with a very sharp shiv directly in the wallet. Jefferies has raised its target price on AMD shares from $30 to $36 as the firm sees big market gains for AMD considering Intel's issues. Analyst Mark Lipacis points to a report from research firm Fubon that claims HP will be adopting AMD processors for up to 30% of its consumer machines next year. Dell will use more AMD chips for its commercial PC line according to the report. Analysts think that AMD has the chance to triple its market share to 30% of the market from the meager 10% that it has today. "Fubon's report that Intel will undersupply the PC market between 4Q18 and 2Q19 leaves us with higher conviction that AMD will report improving revenue, pricing and margins near term, and that is positioned to take share in the high end PC MPU and server market long term," Lipacis said Friday in a note to clients. Lipacis expects to see Intel supply constrained through 2019 and AMD climbing to 30% market share on that constraint isn't "out of the question" he says. Many have wondered what is going on at Intel that has caused such massive shortages of processors. Investment firm J.P. Morgan has issued a report that says Intel's shortage is worsening and that the chipmaker is having capacity issues from delaying its move to 10nm manufacturing tech.
  4. BMW has announced that it is putting a new proprietary AI assistant into its cars that it calls the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This AI is proprietary and aims to enhance the BMW driving experience. The AI is always on and will respond to the voice prompt "Hey BMW" and can perform a range of functions for the driver. Drivers can harness the AI to control vehicle settings, navigation, entertainment systems, explain vehicle functions, and conduct conversations. BMW plans to debut the AI in 2019 and promises that this will usher in a new era for drivers to operate their cars and functions via voice control. In the future, BMW claims that the AI will be ready to help drivers when they are outside the car. BMW also claims that its AI will be compatible with other digital voice assistants and will provide a link to other ecosystems. BMW has provisions in place using its Open Mobility Cloud to allow the personal assistant's capabilities to grow and enhance over time. The system will be updated regularly supporting an ever-expanding range of functions and skills. Intelligent Personal Assistant can learn the routines and habits of the driver and apply what it has learned in the appropriate context. It will do things like learning their preferred vehicle settings including things like seat heating preferences and frequent destination. Something BMW is doing that is unique is to allow the driver to name their AI. It's not clear if this means drivers would be able to say "Hey Bob" instead of "Hey BMW." The AI will be able to respond to natural voice commands even if those commands don’t explicitly state what the driver wants. An example BMW gives is a driver saying, "Hey BMW, I'm cold" and having the AI adjust the temperature in the car. Drivers can ask the AI to explain things like the function of the automatic high beam headlights for instance or ask the AI what messages they might have. BMW's AI will be available in a basic version in 23 languages and markets starting in March 2019. It will land in the U.S., Germany, UK, France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Brazil, Japan at that time and hit China in May 2019. BMW models featuring iDrive 7.0 will have the AI as part of Live Cockpit Professional.
  5. Gunmen have opened fire on an Iranian military parade in the south-western city of Ahvaz, killing at least 25 people, including civilians, and injuring more than 50, state media say. The attackers shot from a park near the parade and were wearing military uniforms, reports say. An anti-government Arab group, Ahvaz National Resistance, and Islamic State (IS) have both claimed the attack. Iran's foreign minister has blamed "terrorists paid by a foreign regime". Javad Zarif added that "Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable". President Hassan Rouhani has ordered security forces to identify the attackers. Iran has previously accused its regional rival, Saudi Arabia, of supporting separatist activity amongst Iran's Arab minority. Meanwhile, an Iranian military spokesman claimed the attackers were not from IS but "were trained and organised by two Gulf countries", and had ties to the US and Israel. What happened? Fars news agency said the attack started at 09:00 local time (06:30 BST), lasted about 10 minutes, and appeared to involve four gunmen. The attackers fired at civilians and attempted to attack military officials on the podium, Fars reports. Nearly half of those killed were members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, reports say. A number of civilians, including women and children, who were watching the military parade, were also among those killed, Irna news agency said. However Irna said no journalist was among those killed, contradicting earlier reports. More than 60 people were wounded in the attack. Two of the gunmen were killed by security forces, while the other two were arrested, according to the local deputy governor, Ali Hosein Hoseinzadeh. Iran is marking the anniversary of the beginning of the 1980-88 war with Iraq with several military parades across the nation. How will the US react? By Siavash Mehdi-Ardalan, BBC Persian There have been two conflicting claims of responsibility: one from a low profile Arab militant group in Iran's Khuzestan region and one from IS. It makes some difference. The former would suggest a resurgence of separatist militancy after a seven-year lull. If it was IS, this attack would represent a failure by Iran's intelligence community to prevent a second IS attack in its soil. Iran has not provided any evidence of foreign collusion but has vowed revenge. The Saudi reaction and more importantly the wording of the US administration's response may prove important as leaders of all three countries are set for a possible diplomatic clash at the UN General Assembly next week. Who is behind the attack? There have been conflicting reports. A spokesman for the Ahvaz National Resistance, an umbrella group that claims to defend the rights of the Arab minority in Khuzestan, said the group was behind the attack. The spokesman did not say whether the group had links to other countries. IS's Amaq agency has also claimed it carried out the attack. However the group provided no evidence that it had been involved. IS has carried out a major attack in Iran before. In June last year, suicide bombers attacked parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder Ayatollah Khomeini, killing 18 people. Iranian government and military officials have pointed the finger at Gulf states, the US and Israel, with all of whom Iran has longstanding tensions. The US and Saudi Arabia accuse Iran of supporting Houthi rebels in the conflict in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are fighting on the side of the internationally-recognised government of President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

  8. Motorola is currently on its third-generation of Moto Z smartphones and the 2018 flagship is the new Moto Z3. The Moto Z3 still supports the growing family of Moto Mod accessories, and early next year it will be available with the 5G Moto Mod, making it one of the first smartphones on the market with 5G capabilities. Whereas Motorola's previous generation Moto Z2 Force was priced at $720 unlocked, direct from Motorola when it launched last year, the Moto Z3 debuts at a much more palatable $480 as a Verizon Wireless exclusive. You can also pay for the device using a Verizon installment plan for $20/month for 24 months. In addition, if you're a new customer switching to Verizon, you can get $300 off the purchase with a smartphone trade-in. The Moto Z3 only comes in one color, black, although you can change things up with different colored Moto Mod style covers that magnetically attach to the back of the phone. In the box you'll find a USB-C to USB-A cable and a Motorola Turbo Charger along with a USB-C to headphone adapter (given that you won't find a 3.5mm jack on-board). Looking at the Moto Z3's specs may give you a sense of deja vu. Like the Moto Z2 Force that came before it, the Moto Z3 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There are no optional configurations, so if you need more than what's provided internally, you'll have to purchase a microSD card (up to 2TB cards are supported). Model Name Moto Z3 Display 6.01-inch Super AMOLED Display (2160 x 1080 Resolution, 402 ppi pixel density) Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Dimensions 156.5 x 76.5 x 6.75mm, 156g SIM Single SIM (nano) or Dual SIM (nano)/SD Card Slot Protection Splash Resistant GPU Adreno 540 OS Android v8.1.0 (Oreo) RAM 4 GB LPDDR4 Storage 64 GB Micro SD up to 2TB Camera 12 MP f/2.0 rear camera, dual pixel PDAF, dual-tone LED flash, Video 2160p@30fps, 1080p@60fps, 720p@120fps 12MP, depth sensor 8 MP f/2.0 front facing camera, Video 1080p Networking GSM / HSPA / LTE support v5.0 Bluetooth, NFC, USB Type-C, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, A-GPS Sensors Accelerometer, Fingerprint, Gyro, Compass, Proximity Battery 3000 mAh Non-Removable Li-Ion Battery Colors Black Extra Moto Mods Version 2.5 Full Support Price Approximately $480 To some, the Moto Z3's lack of the current, newer Snapdragon 845 processor may be a deal breaker for what should be a flagship device, but we're not so certain that should be the case. In fact, the Moto Z3 is still a good all-around performer and is priced right for those that are beholden to the Verizon Wireless network. The display has increased in size compared to the Motorola Z2 Force, growing from 5.5 inches to 6.01 inches. It's still a Super AMOLED unit, although this time around it has an 18:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2160x1080, which is actually a downgrade from the Z2 Force's 2560x1440. One other thing of note is that there will not be a "Force" version of the Moto Z3, which means no ShatterShield screen technology -- instead, the Z3 uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
  9. In a letter sent to US lawmakers, Google reaffirmed its policy of allowing third-party app developers to access private information belonging to Gmail users, so long as the developers are upfront about the data they are collecting. It comes with the territory of allowing third-party apps to integrate with Gmail, as ultimately it is up to the users to make sure they fully understand exactly what permissions they are granting. The policy has drawn increased attention over the past several weeks, especially in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Back at the beginning of July, Google felt compelled to pen a blog post discussing security and privacy within Gmail. The company insisted that keeping Gmail secure is its "top priority," and went on to explain its vetting process, which entails ensuring that apps accurately represent themselves and only request relevant data. Around the same time, Google sent a letter defending its position to members of Congress. The contents of that letter have now been obtained by CNNMoney. "Developers may share data with third parties so long as they are transparent with the users about how they are using the data," Susan Molinari, VP of public policy and government affairs for the Americas at Google, stated in the letter. Molinari also claimed in the letter that Gmail users can easily review the privacy policy before deciding whether to grant access to third-party apps, and can view or remove app access on their Google account page if they change their mind. The letter basically doubles down on what Google already stated in its blog post on the topic. However, navigating the settings and changing privacy controls isn't necessarily straightforward, especially for less savvy users. We wrote a guide several weeks ago on how to manage Gmail controls, and you should check it out if you want to adjust your settings.

  11. One of the cool features of the Tesla Model 3 is that it supports a phone key that allows you to give access to a car to friends or family so they can unlock and start it without a key. The phone key feature is also used by a rental car company out of Minnesota called Trevls. The company has announced that a thief was able to walk up to one of its Model 3 fleet rental cars, unlock the EV, and then drive off in it. Trevls owner John Marino said that he believes this theft took a "next-level" of information to pull off. The first suspect that came to mind for the company after the EV was stolen was a regular customer. The 21-year-old thief had rented cars from Trevls frequently and had gone so far as to brag about how much he knew about the car and its security. The police investigating the theft have stated that they think the man was somehow able to mani[CENSORED]te the Tesla app and start the car, he went so far as to turn off GPS before leaving town. A computer forensics expert named Mark Lanterman has commented on how he believes the thief was able to get past Tesla's security measures. According to Lanterman, he believes that the thief simply took the VIN of the car and had Tesla add it to his account. Once the ride was added to his account, he could control the car from the phone app. However, Tesla has stated that the man might have been able to enter the car using a phone that had been authenticated as a key during a previous rental. Trevls says that it did remove the suspects access to the vehicle after his previous rental and they have no idea how the suspect was able to reactivate the phone key and use it. The thief was caught, despite having disabled GPS, when the rental agency tracked him as he stopped to use Tesla Superchargers. His whereabouts showed up in the Supercharger billing syste.
  12. At least 100 people are known to have died after a ferry carrying hundreds of people capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, officials say. Many more are missing and it is feared that more than 200 people may have drowned. Rescue efforts resumed on Friday after being halted overnight. The MV Nyerere ferry overturned near Ukara island on its way from Bugorora. It is thought the overloaded vessel tipped over when crowds on board moved to one side as it docked. Local media say the ferry's official capacity was 100 people but officials say the vessel was carrying more than 400 passengers when it capsized. Africa Live: Updates on this and other stories The BBC's Aboubakar Famau in Tanzania says fear has gripped residents of Mwanza region as they await to hear the fate of relatives who travelled on the MV Nyerere on Thursday. "I received a call telling me that I have lost my aunt, father and my younger brother," says Editha Josephat Magesa, a local resident. "We are really saddened and urge the government to provide a new ferry because the old one was small and the po[CENSORED]tion is big." Our reporter says the ferry's engines were recently replaced after local MP Joseph Mkundi complained about the previous ones. Passenger figures unclear Tanzania's police chief Simon Sirro Mwanza, who has travelled to the area, says the death toll has risen to 100. So far, 40 people have been rescued and are in critical condition, according to Mwanza Regional Commissioner John Mongella. Local officials had initially reported on Thursday that 100 people had been rescued. Exact figures, though, are yet to be confirmed - Reuters said the person who dispensed tickets for the journey also died, with the machine recording the data lost. The ferry was said to have been particularly busy because it was market day in Bugorora. The islands are close to Tanzania's second-largest city of Mwanza. Tragic history Tanzania has seen a number of nautical disasters, with overcrowding often playing a role. In 2012, at least 145 people died when a packed ferry sank while transporting people to the island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. The year before, almost 200 people died in another major incident off the coast of Zanzibar. Hundreds survived, some found clinging to mattresses and fridges. In 1996, more than 800 people died when the MV Bukoba capsized on Lake Victoria. It was one of the the worst ferry disasters of the last century.
  13. Platform(s): PS4 Release date: December 22 2018 If you think zombies have been done to death, well... you're right, but that isn't stopping the PS4-exclusive Days Gone. The enemies in this open-world post-apocalypse aren't technically undead - the so-called 'Freakers' are actually infected humans who have gone feral and seem eager to devour our hero Deacon (voiced by and modeled after Sam Witwer, who you might recognize as Starkiller from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed). What really sets the Freaker horde apart is just how many can be chasing you at once; there are times when they're practically flooding out of the environment, and all you can do to survive is simply run.
  14. Platform(s): Xbox One, PC Release date: February 22, 2018 In Crackdown 3 you’re a super-cop in an open-world city, using your powers to fight crime and smash the whole place up in the process. While there’s still a story campaign to tackle, the online co-op for up to four players is where it's at, letting you and your Agency buddies tear up this futuristic metropolis in chaotic style. You'll be leaping between buildings using your jumpjets in one moment, then raining down high-tech bazooka missiles onto any poor criminals the next. The addition of Terry Crews as a playable character is the perfect cherry atop this city-obliterating sundae.
