What just happened? Slack is receiving a major update with new features to make it easier to organize messages and channels. With more people relying on team collaboration tools than ever, Slack is trying to take steps to keep up with fierce competition from Microsoft and Google. The po[CENSORED]r communication service is rolling out a big update that includes additions such as a new navigation bar, improved shortcuts, and folder-type drop down sections. The update will become available today for desktop users with updated iOS and Android apps coming soon. One of the major changes is with the Slack UI. The navigation bar is simpler and should make it easier to search within Slack and switch between conversations and channels without needing keystrokes. That said, it does support keyboard shortcuts or mouse shortcuts that browsers would normally use. Slack apps, channels, and messages can be grouped into collapsible sections within the sidebar. This could be handy for keeping all conversations and channels for a single project under one section. Users can also drag and drop elements to order things exactly where they want. The updated sidebar features are only accessible for paid Slack users though. Slack is adding a new universal compose button. This allows creating messages anywhere on Slack, useful to start drafting a message before deciding who to send it to. Once you decide, Slack will load the previous message history in the draft view. The draft is also saved if you go somewhere else within the application. Interestingly, the Slack team used its own service to test these changes. The company created a shared channel that included product managers and engineers along with 100 other "Slack champions" from around 30 different businesses. Slack would roll out prototypes, so companies could give feedback in real time. This helped them understand the immediate impact of how their changes affected real businesses. “This is the largest redesign in Slack’s history,” explains Ethan Eismann, vice president of design at Slack, in an interview with The Verge. “We’ve taken a lot of the historical features and reorganized them in a way that makes them much more apparent in the right way and simple to use. While there are many options online, you might want to check out AppsGeyser, which is fast, responsive, and requires zero technical skill. In fact, creating an app with this tool is so easy that I’ll walk you through all the steps from start to installation on my phone. 1. Log in and Get Started First, create your account in the login area using just an email address. It is recommended to verify the email after registration: I used a temporary email address and never got stalled. They do ask for a phone number, but you don’t have to provide one. Something to look forward to: Microsoft's first big update for Windows 10 this year brings with it lots of improvements, but with the company focusing on Windows 10X and the necessary modularization work to make that OS a reality, it hasn't managed to smooth out all the rough edges just yet. Windows 10 is set to receive a new major update in April, one year after they officially started working on it. Dubbed 20H1 or version 2004, this is supposed to be a more significant upgrade than last year's November update (19H2). You can already download the ISO file to perform an in-place upgrade or a clean install as an Insider, but it's best that you wait for it to be released via Windows Update, as Microsoft is still working on squashing bugs and polishing the release for final delivery. File Search also now governs the search box in File Explorer, which means it'll offer search suggestions from local and OneDrive files in a drop-down. It was reported last month that whenever someone accessed the Chrome Web Store using Edge, they were met with a message that read: “Google recommends switching to Chrome to use extensions securely.” What’s strange is that Microsoft last year rebuilt its browser with the same Chromium platform used by Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, and others, meaning that Edge is compatible with extensions designed for Chrome. It looked like the warning was just anti-competitive behavior from Google. Despite Chrome taking a 67 percent share of the browser market, versus Edge’s six percent, was the search giant trying to steal more users from its competitor? Not according to the company.
