Launched today is a new, free-to-use Software Evaluation Toolkit aimed at the shipping industry and designed to enable ship owners and managers to make better informed decisions on digital solutions needed to decarbonize fleets. The toolkit, dubbed SET Maritime, is vendor-neutral, developed by OrbitMI, a US-based software-as-a-service provider. According to the company, the sole purpose is simplifying the software selection process as the industry seeks to navigate the vast landscape of digital solutions.Connecting 'digitalization' to 'decarbonization' is the mission of multiple organizations accross the maritime world, and accoring to OrbitMI chief executive Ali Riaz "One obstacle for the industry has been the lack of suitable user-defined benchmarking criteria to assess the bewildering array of applications available. Consequently, there has been little understanding of how to evaluate different applications so the whole business of software selection has been poorly informed, which has proven a big barrier to adoption.” To address this, SET Maritime is designed to serve as a structured toolkit with a range of criteria to evaluate software vendors in various categories including company profile, solution architecture, usage and extendibility, reports, dashboards and visibility, pre- and post-fixture features, and voyage management and operations. Designed to be easy-to-use in a workbook format, the freely downloadable and customizable open-source toolkit allows software vendors to be ranked by the user according to their scores in each category.

Link : https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pcmag.com/news/hp-acquires-poly-provider-of-hybrid-work-hardware-for-33-billion%3famp=true HP is doubling down on the push for hybrid work by acquiring Poly, a US company that sells video-conferencing equipment, such as headphones and meeting room systems. The PC maker will pay $3.3 billion for Poly in a bid to become a leading provider of hybrid work systems. "The rise of the hybrid office creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity to redefine the way work gets done,” HP CEO Enrique Lores said in a statement. “Combining HP and Poly creates a leading portfolio of hybrid work solutions across large and growing markets.” Even though the pandemic is dying down, HP says it’s still seeing “sustained demand” from corporations looking for ways to enable seamless collaboration between home and office environments. The company’s own survey found that about 75% of office workers are investing in ways to improve their home office setups. “Traditional office spaces are also being reconfigured to support hybrid work and collaboration, with a focus on meeting room solutions. Currently, there are more than 90 million rooms, of which less than 10% have video capability,” the company adds, citing a market research study. As a result, the company sees a lucrative market in selling hybrid work-tailored products. Poly CEO Dave Schull adds: “The combination gives us an opportunity to dramatically scale, reaching new markets and channels.” The acquisition also means HP plans on offering more hardware peripherals from Poly, which also sells kits to turn home offices into a hybrid work environment. "HP will be able to cross-sell across its global commercial and consumer sales channels, while driving incremental sales from combining Poly’s products with HP’s PC portfolio," the company adds. The deal is expected to close by the end of this year, pending approval from Poly shareholders and government regulators.

Link : https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2022/03/27/you-could-get-new-iphone-every-year-with-netflix-style-apple-subscription/amp/ According to apple, the service would allow fans to pay a monthly fee to get the latest Apple gadgets as and when they're released. The service would allow fans to pay a monthly fee to get the latest Apple gadgets as and when they’re released. It could launch in late 2022 or early 2023, sources told Bloomberg in a report published Thursday. Apple already runs a monthly payment plan for gadgets – including iPhones and iPads – purchased from its website. Customers on the program effectively spread the price of the device over a period of 12 or 24 months. According to Bloomberg, the new service would be different in that it wouldn’t simply cover the cost of the device divided by 12 or 24 months. Instead, members would pay a still-undecided monthly cost that may come with an option to upgrade to new hardware as its released. Currently, Apple’s monthly plans do not automatically roll over to new devices as they’re launched.Bloomberg said the change would “make device ownership similar to paying a monthly app fee”. Like Apple’s other subscriptions, it would be tied to a user’s existing Apple ID account. It’s possibile customers will have the option to bundle in AppleCare or Apple One services, too. It could end up saving you money in the long-run with small discounts offered to those who combine services into one subscription.Apple has previously focussed on selling iPhones at full cost outright. New devices can cost well above $1,000. The iPhone remains the company’s biggest source of revenue, generating $192billion last year. The iPhone plan is part of drive by the company to shift towards subscription services, which it sees as a largely untapped source of potential revenue. In 2020, the firm launched Apple One, which bundles a number of its digital services together into a single subscription tier. Users get access to Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, Apple News Plus and more all for a monthly fee. You can select from one of three tiers depending on how much you want to spend and who will be using it. This story originally appeared on The Sun and was reproduced here with permission.

Link : https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/2979428/dod-publishes-new-software-modernization-strategy/ Delivering a more lethal force requires the ability to evolve faster and be more adaptable than adversaries, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen H. Hicks said. The department's adaptability increasingly relies on software and the ability to securely and rapidly deliver resilient software capability. That is a competitive advantage that will define future conflicts, she said."Transforming software delivery times from years to minutes will require significant change to our processes, policies, workforce and technology," Hicks said. The offices of the chief information officer, the undersecretaries of defense for acquisition and sustainment and research and engineering, as well as the software modernization senior steering group are involved in efforts to operationalize the strategy. The goal, according to the strategy, is to provide cybersecure development, security and operations in software factories, as well as cloud services and faster delivery of software in support of critical data and communications — most notably, Joint All-Domain Command and Control and artificial intelligence. Deputy Chief Information Officer for Information Enterprise Danielle Metz spoke to Federal News Network about the new strategy. "I don't think it makes a lot of sense to separate software modernization from cloud adoption because it would imply that software could be modernized without cloud. By placing the cloud at the center of the technology enablers of the strategy, it absolutely affirms the importance of cloud and why we want the department to move and migrate to the cloud," she said. The primary driver of the new strategy, she said, is harnessing the power of cloud computing, being able to build applications continuously, improved cybersecurity, and having "the ability to have technology at the fingertips of our warfighter as opposed to delivering a hardware intensive platform." The workforce is absolutely critical to the strategy, along with training, business transformation and user buy-in, Metz said."If we had all the money in the world to buy the best technology and we had the right processes in place to be able to get the needed technology at the time of consumption, but our workforce and our warfighters did not know how to use the technology to be able to execute their mission, we failed," she said. Metz said implementation plans for the new strategy will be delivered as early as this summer.

Link : https://www.google.com/amp/s/nbc24.com/amp/news/local/local-hardware-store-preps-for-busiest-time-of-year Last weekend’s beautiful weather was just a preview of what's to come in the coming weeks when spring arrives. ACE Hardware in Sylvania said they saw a huge increase in people coming in to get their initial products."When the weather’s really warm outside, we see a large influx. People want to get out and play in their yard. When it’s colder, it’s a little slower, but we’re all prepared, we’ve got our stock in with our mulch, our dirt, our soil, grass seeds and fertilizer," said assistant manager Laura Hieber. The store does the bulk of their business in the spring and summertime. So, they make sure they’re prepared for whatever the customers need. "Spring is sort of like our Christmas. We always order extra pallets of dirt and different things. We always want to be ahead of the game with lawnmowers and that kind of product, so we usually have a good stock here." During the quarantine period of the pandemic, business boomed as more and more people turned to gardening as a way to pass the time. And since then, the customer flow has been consistent. "We saw an increase in yard work and gardening supplies. A lot of people got into gardening which they hadn’t done before. We saw a lot of paint as well because they had the time to revamp their houses and repaint everything." The store will be celebrating its ten-year anniversary later this year with a special celebration.

Link : https://www.ept.ca/2022/03/hardware-design-challenge-focused-on-eco-impactful-innovation/ Supplyframe announced that the ninth annual Hackaday Prize – a global hardware design challenge focused on widespread and impactful innovation that will award more than $100,000 in cash and a Supplyframe DesignLab residency – will focus on sustainability, circularity, and climate crisis resiliency. “This year the Hackaday Prize is putting the planet first,” said Supplyframe CEO and founder Steve Flagg. “This is an opportunity for the open source hardware community and the electronics industry to work together to drive innovation; reinforce long-term sustainability initiatives with immediate, tangible solutions; and help to create a brighter tomorrow.” Supplyframe and Hackaday founded the Hackaday Prize in 2014 and have hosted the challenge each year since then. This year’s challenge invites the open source hardware community of hundreds of thousands of designers, engineers, hackers, and scientists to work within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals structure to tackle the planet’s most pressing issues by creating hardware that drives innovation, solving difficult problems, and serving to “hack the future.” Decentralized Wireless Alliance “We look forward to collaborating again this year with Supplyframe, and we appreciate our 2022 partners Digi-Key and the Decentralized Wireless Alliance,” said Elliot Williams, editor in chief of Hackaday, who added that “The Hackaday Prize challenges this year will address an array of topics, from clean energy to climate resilience.” The full list of challenges include: Planet-Friendly Power: This March 29 challenge will encourage contestants to create solutions to lower the cost of clean energy, through energy harvesting and/or storage efficiency improvements. Reuse, Recycle, Revamp: This May 1 challenge will welcome submissions that facilitate recycling of material that would otherwise end up in the waste stream. Hack it Back: This June 12 challenge will include projects that add new capabilities to older electrical gear to extend the usefulness of that equipment. Climate Resilient Communities: This July 24 challenge will invite participants to design devices that help communities to become more resilient to weather and climate disasters and/or collect data from their environments so that they may advocate for changes in local infrastructure. Save the World Wildcard: Anything goes in this Sept. 4 challenge. Designs must stand apart from other challenges and create a more promising future for all. Representatives from Art Center, AT&T, Conservation X Labs, Crowd Supply, Intel, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Moog, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), NYU, Tesla, the United Nations, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst will serve as judges for this year’s Hackaday Prize challenge entries and mentors for the challenge participants. In addition to awarding more than $100,000 in cash prizes to the winning entries, the Hackaday Prize will offer the grand prize winner a residency at the Supplyframe DesignLab. “We look forward to another successful Hackaday Prize challenge, for which the open source community will work to address important issues that stand to impact every person on the planet,” added Flagg. “This contest is yet another proof point of Supplyframe’s ongoing commitment to support and champion open source hardware innovation for social impact.”
