  6. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-66843045 A cocker spaniel from Stonehaven has joined an exclusive group of canines who have reached the top of every Munro in Scotland. Six-year-old Glen and his owner George Creighton have climbed 282 Munros across the country. The pair completed the challenge, which they started in 2018, on Saturday after scaling their final peak, Ben More on Mull. George said having a canine companion made it a special achievement. He said: "I am so proud of Glen. It is an achievement for me too, but to do it with my dog, it truly has been such a special experience. George Creighton and Glen, the cocker spaniel "I certainly have mixed emotions. I am so glad we have managed to complete all 282 but at the same time, I'm sad it's over." Munros are Scottish peaks of more than 3,000ft (914m). The 70-year-old began scaling the mountains in his retirement, and was inspired by a guide to get a four-legged companion to join him on his adventures. "It has been a great activity for us both; for me to keep me fit, and for Glen, well it is always good to have company and what is better than an energetic spaniel," he said. Running up that hill: The Munro-bagging dogs Climber, 82, completes 282 mountain challenge Girl, 10, conquers all Munros in Scotland Over the past five years, George and Glen have taken on some of the more precarious summits, including scaling the famed inaccessible pinnacle in Skye's Cuillin mountain range. But for George it has brought about many smiles and laughter which he says he "wouldn't trade for the world". Glen, the cocker spaniel He continued: "Getting Glen was the best decision I have ever made. His energy is just terrific. He certainly keeps me on my toes. "Sometimes I take the bike with me to take some of the pressure off the legs, but Glen is off and away. "He has eased off a bit in his older age, and knows when we are up early, he has a big day ahead of him." When asked what lies in wait next for the duo, George joked: "Who knows, we might even take on Kilimanjaro one afternoon."
  7. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-66871457 Rishi Sunak has delayed a ban on new petrol and diesel cars in a major change to the government's approach to achieving net zero by 2050. The prime minister announced exemptions and delays to several key green policies, alongside a 50% increase in cash incentives to replace gas boilers. The government could not impose "unacceptable costs" linked to reducing emissions on British families, he said. Mr Sunak denied he was "watering down" the government's net zero commitments. There has been criticism of the changes from Labour, business leaders and from within Mr Sunak's own party. But many Conservative MPs have come out in favour Mr Sunak's new direction, alongside some in the car industry. What does net zero mean? Cars, boilers and other key takeaways from Sunak's speech The changes come as Mr Sunak seeks to create dividing lines with opposition parties ahead of a general election, expected next year. Framing the changes as "pragmatic and proportionate", the prime minister has unpicked several of Boris Johnson's key policies, many of them launched when Mr Sunak was serving as chancellor. And the political choices outlined in his speech preview more announcements later this autumn, as Mr Sunak promised he would set out "a series of long term decisions". In a speech from Downing Street on Wednesday, Mr Sunak said moving too fast on green policies "risks losing the consent of the British people". Among the key changes announced were: A five-year delay in the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, meaning a requirement for all new cars to be "zero emission" will not come into force until 2035 A nine-year delay in the ban on new fossil fuel heating for off-gas-grid homes to 2035 Raising the Boiler Upgrade Grant by 50% to £7,500 to help households who want to replace their gas boilers The ban on the sale of new gas boilers in 2035 remains, but the government will introduce new exemption for poorer households Scrapping the requirement on landlords to ensure all rental properties had a Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of grade C or higher, from 2025. The announcement was brought forward after plans to change the proposals were revealed by the BBC. Mr Sunak ran the changes past a hastily-organised Cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning. Responding to the statement, Labour unequivocally committed itself to keeping the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. Without the ban the UK will miss its target "for a fully carbon free economy by 2050", shadow environment secretary Steve Reed said. Mr Reed said the prime minster had "sold out the biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century" for Britain "to lead the world in transition to well-paid secured new jobs of the green economy". Media caption, Watch: Rishi Sunak's shift on green policies - what he said then and now Mr Sunak also announced he would be "scrapping" a range of proposals which had been "thrown up" by the debate, including hiking up air fares to discourage foreign holidays and taxes on meat consumption - proposals that were not government policy. Announcing the policies, Mr Sunak said the country needs "sensible green leadership", saying that without transparency and "honest debate" on the impact of green policies there would be a "backlash" against net zero. "That's why we have to do things differently," he said. Could Sunak's green review threaten UK net zero? Billions of pounds has already been invested across multiple industries, including car makers and energy firms, in preparation of the previous deadlines. Korean carmaker Kia, which has plans to launch nine new electric vehicles over the next few years, said the announcement was disappointing as it "alters complex supply chain negotiations and product planning, whilst potentially contributing to consumer and industry confusion". The CEO of E.On energy, Chris Norbury, said watering down net zero plans was a "mis-step on many levels." "We risk condemning people to many more years of living in cold and draughty homes that are expensive to heat, in cities clogged with dirty air from fossil fuels, missing out on the economic regeneration this ambition brings," Mr Norbury said. Jaguar Land Rover, which announced hundreds of new jobs in the West Midlands a few days ago, welcomed the change, calling it "pragmatic" and adding that it brings the UK in line with other nations. "Pragmatic" was also how Toyota described the changes. Wise or wobbly Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey accused Mr Sunak of being "selfish" and said the changes "epitomise his weakness". "The prime minister's legacy will be the hobbling of our country's future economy as he ran scared from the right wing of his own party," he said. The UK was now "at the back of the queue as the rest of the world races to embrace the industries of tomorrow", Sir Ed added. But the shift in policy has gained support from some within Mr Sunak's party. Former cabinet minister Jacob Rees-Mogg backed the changes, telling the BBC: "The problem with net zero and having regulations coming in so quickly was that it was a scheme of the elite on the backs of the least well off." Mr Sunak is instead "going with the grain of the nation and moving for 'intelligent net zero' by 2050 but not putting in costly bans in the next few years." The BBC's Chris Mason says Mr Sunak and his advisers will hope that beyond the criticism, many voters might quietly conclude he is on to something and being reasonable. Mr Sunak's proposals are dividing his party, Parliament, and many in the country, but the PM will be looking at Labour's lead in the opinion polls and concluding he has no choice but to gamble.
  8. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66861399 Manchester United were given a taste of what could have been as Harry Kane helped Bayern Munich to victory over Erik ten Hag's struggling side in a high-scoring and eventful Champions League opener. It was no secret that the Red Devils would have liked to have signed Kane from Tottenham in the summer, but instead England's captain and record goalscorer opted for a career in Germany that has begun in stellar fashion. At the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, the 30-year-old claimed both an assist and scored from the penalty spot - after a VAR check to rule Christian Eriksen had handled in the box - to take his tally of goals this season to five in five games in all competitions. It was a timely strike from Kane too as it came just after Rasmus Hojland had scored his first United goal to make it 2-1 early in the second half and give his side some hope of a result. Before that, goalkeeper Andre Onana had undone a disciplined start from the visitors with a shocking error to allow Leroy Sane's drive to slip under him and find the net in the 28th minute. Four minutes later, Serge Gnabry struck low and accurately inside the far corner to make it 2-0. It is to the visitors' credit that they came out swinging to try and make a contest of it but their current fragility and lack of options from the bench as a result of numerous injuries undermined their ability to compete. Casemiro showed dogged determination to smuggle a second in for United to give them a glimmer of hope but Mathys Tel snuffed that out by hammering a Bayern fourth high into the net in added time. United were not finished, with Casemiro heading home Bruno Fernandes' free-kick from close range with almost the last kick of the game, but it was too late. An opening-game loss at the six-time champions of Europe will not define the campaign, especially with FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray - who drew 2-2 earlier on Wednesday in Istanbul - both more beatable in the group, but they are now in dire need of a response to restore some focus and faith. Follow reaction to Bayern Munich v Manchester United and the rest of Wednesday's Champions League games How did you rate United's performance? Have your say here Go straight to all the best Man Utd content Some fight but too much fragility from United After a 2022-23 campaign of progress, United are again sailing in choppy waters. Last season, Ten Hag looked to have steadied one of European football's biggest ships following the failure of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tenure and the ill-advised interim experiment with Ralf Rangnick. Having led them to a first piece of major silverware in six seasons and back into the Champions League, optimism was high at the club ahead of this campaign. But three defeats from the first five league games - their worst league start in a decade - has seen this rapidly evaporate and now they must digest a humbling start to their European campaign. It could have been different. They could, and probably should, have led inside five minutes as Alphonso Davies' timely tackle stopped Facundo Pellistri tapping in but set up Christian Eriksen to fire an effort from close range straight at Sven Ulreich. Similarly, at the start of the second half, had they been able to test Bayern's resolve for longer at 2-1 rather than conceding again inside five minutes they may have taken something. And then at the end they showed fight to forge Casemiro's double only for that to be made moot by their soft concession of a fourth. This is a United side undone by early-season results, injuries and costly moments of ineptitude. Onana's error was a shocker and one a side with such fragile confidence can ill afford. It was followed by a period where players seemed happier to hide than rally in the face of adversity. Before Wednesday's game, Ten Hag bemoaned that he had yet to field his strongest XI during his tenure and maybe it is only fair to judge him and his side this season when they are closer to that? But this is still a United side with talent in it and one that needs to not only win at Burnley on Saturday but do so convincingly. Kane plays his part as Bayern set the early pace Bayern were not at their best. They have not been so for much of this season. They were also without suspended manager Thomas Tuchel as assistant Zsolt Low took charge on the touchline. But they are a winning machine and with Kane in attack, supplemented by Sane, Gnabry and Musiala, they will be a test for any defence on the continent, let alone one as currently shaky as United's. It was not Kane's best game, with him floating in and out of it, but he did what was required. His neat set-up enabled the opener and he made no mistake with a typically ruthless penalty. They should have scored more, hitting the post twice after the break, and allowed United footholds in the game, but their ability to move rapidly up through the gears remains highly impressive. That is 35 games unbeaten now for the German champions in the group stage of this competition and 15 straight home wins. It gives them early control of Group A.
  9. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66869455 Donald Trump Jr's account on X posted that his father had died, in a series of messages placed by a hacker on Wednesday. In a string of now deleted posts, the account claimed his father had died and directed a racial slur at President Joe Biden. The posts were on the page, which has 10 million followers, for less than an hour before being deleted. The Trump Organization said that the account was hacked. One of the posts read: "I'm sad to announce, my father Donald Trump has passed away. I will be running for president in 2024." Another said North Korea was "about to get smoked", while one post wrote of "some interesting messages" with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Others mentioned Richard Heart, a cryptocurrency influencer facing fraud charges by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and YouTuber Logan Paul. The posts began appearing after 08:00 ET (12:00 GMT). His father posted an unrelated message on his Truth Social account while his son's account claimed his demise. "Don's account has been hacked," Andrew Surabian, a spokesman for Mr Trump Jr, posted on X, adding that the post was "obviously not true". Mr Trump Jr has since posted on X, formerly Twitter, but has not alluded to his account being compromised other than to "like" a tweet saying he had been hacked. X has been contacted for comment. An automatic reply from the company's press email reads: "Busy now, please check back later." Mr Trump Jr has continued to use the Elon Musk-owned platform. Truth Social was founded by the former president after his X account was suspended in 2021 due to the risk of incitement of violence. It was later reinstated last November. Mr Musk took control of Twitter in October 2022 in a $44bn (£37bn) deal and renamed it X.
  10. https://www.gadgets360.com/apps/news/whatsapp-beta-passkey-support-login-biometric-unlock-fingerprint-face-id-password-manager-4407108 WhatsApp has begun rolling out support for a new feature that will allow you to log in to your account using the biometric authentication mechanism on your smartphone. The messaging service will soon allow you to create a passkey — a kind of login credential that eliminates the need to use or remember a password — on your device and use it to securely log in to apps and services using the facial recognition or fingerprint scanner on your device. Feature tracker WABetaInfo spotted the new passkey feature on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.20.4 on Tuesday, that is rolling out to beta users. However, not all users who have updated to the latest beta release will have access to the feature, which is reportedly rolling out to a "limited number of beta testers". Gadgets 360 was unable to access the feature on two different Android smartphones that are both enrolled in the beta program. Authenticating using passkeys isn't a novel concept and the technology is slowly gaining traction online— Google already allows you to log in to a new device by using fingerprint-based biometric authentication for passkeys in place of a password. These passkeys are securely stored on your device and used when biometric authentication is provided. The screenshot posted by WABetaInfo also states that WhatsApp will store the passkey in the device's password manager — for most users, that would be the device's default password store that is handled by Google with autofill support. The feature is also expected to make its way to iOS, where it is likely to be stored in the iOS Keychain. It is currently unclear whether WhatsApp will also support storing passkeys in third-party apps like Bitwarden, 1Password, or Dashlane. We can expect to learn more about how the feature works when it is rolled out to more users in the beta program and the feature is expected to arrive on all smartphones on the stable channel in the future.
  11. https://techxplore.com/news/2023-09-recreating-virtual-reality.html The physical laws of everyday water flow were established two centuries ago. However, scientists today struggle to simulate disrupted water flow virtually, e.g., when a hand or object alters its flow. Now, a research team from Tohoku University has harnessed the power of deep reinforcement learning to replicate the flow of water when disturbed. Replicating this agitated liquid motion, as it is known, allowed them to recreate water flow in real time based on only a small amount of data from real water. The technology opens up the possibility for virtual reality interactions involving water. Details of their findings were published in the journal ACM Transactions on Graphics. Crucial to the breakthrough was creating both a flow measurement technique and a flow reconstruction method that replicated agitated liquid motion. To collect flow data, the group—which comprised researchers from Tohoku University's Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC) and the Institute of Fluid Science—placed buoys embedded with special magnetic markers on water. The movement of each buoy could then be tracked using a magnetic motion capture system. Yet this was only half of the process. The crucial step involved finding an innovative solution to recovering the detailed water motion from the movement of a few buoys. "We overcame this by combining a fluid simulation with deep reinforcement learning to perform the recovery," says Yoshifumi Kitamura, deputy director of RIEC. Reinforcement learning is the trial-and-error process through which learning takes place. A computer performs actions, receives feedback (reward or punishment) from its environment, and then adjusts its future actions to maximize its total rewards over time, much like a dog associates treats with good behavior. Deep reinforcement learning combines reinforcement learning with deep neural networks to solve complex problems. First, the researchers used a computer to simulate calm liquid. Then, they made each buoy act like a force that pushes the simulated liquid, making it flow like real liquid. The computer then refines the way of pushing via deep reinforcement learning. A flowchart of the digital replication process. An unknown disturbance is introduced to the water. For example, a person is randomly waving a plastic bunny underwater. Buoys are floated to measure the water flow. The movement of the buoys is used to replicate the original flow digitally. Credit: Kinfung Chu et al. Previous techniques had typically tracked tiny particles suspended inside the liquid with cameras. But it still remained difficult to measure 3-D flow in real-time, especially when the liquid was in an opaque container or was opaque itself. Thanks to the developed magnetic motion capture and flow reconstruction technique, real-time 3-D flow measurement is now possible. Kitamura stresses that the technology will make VR more immersive and improve online communication. "This technology will enable the creation of VR games where you can control things using water and actually feel the water in the game. We may be able to transmit the movement of water over the internet in real time so that even those far away can experience the same lifelike water motion."
  12. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-affirms-native-resolutio-gaming-thing-of-past-dlss-here-to-stay Digital Foundry recently posted a roundtable discussion video featuring Jakub Knapik from CD Projekt Red and Jacob Freeman and Bryan Catanzaro from Nvidia discussing the implications of Nvidia's DLSS 3.5 technology in Cyberpunk 2077, as well as the general advantages of AI-generated upscaling and rendering. During their discussion with Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia and PCMR's Pedro Valadas, Bryan Catanzaro — Nvidia's VP of Applied Deep Learning Research — stated that native resolution gaming is no longer the best solution for maximum graphical fidelity. Catanzaro went on to say that the gaming graphics industry is headed toward more significant reliance on AI image reconstruction and AI-based graphics rendering in the future. Catanzaro's statement was in response to a question from Valadas regarding DLSS and whether Nvidia planned to prioritize native resolution performance in its GPUs. Catanzaro pointed out that improving graphics fidelity through sheer brute force is no longer an ideal solution, due to the fact that "Moore's Law is dead." As a result, Catanzaro explained, smarter technologies like DLSS need to be implemented to improve graphics fidelity and circumvent the otherwise low gen-on-gen performance improvements seen in todays graphics hardware. In the case of Cyberpunk 2077, both Valadas and CD Projekt Red's Jakub Knapik said that full path-tracing would have been impossible in that game without all of DLSS's technologies — especially in terms of image upscaling and frame generation. They also noted how DLSS smartly added more performance headroom to modern GPUs, allowing Cyberpunk 2077 to run full realistic light simulation in real-time, outputting a far more realistic and detailed-looking image compared to rendering games the traditional way. When asked about the future of machine-learning in gaming graphics, Catanzaro said that DLSS/AI will eventually be able to replace traditional rendering entirely. Catanzaro continued by saying the industry has realized it can learn much more complicated functions by looking at large data sets (with AI) rather than by building algorithms from the ground up ("traditional rendering techniques"). Nvidia already showed us a glimpse of this future at NeurIPS 2018, where a driving demo was rendered entirely using AI. Catanzaro's statement seem to confirm that the gaming world as we know it may be on its last legs. With the alleged "death" of Moore's Law, AI mani[CENSORED]tion may be the only thing that continues to drive 3D graphics forward for the foreseeable future. Catanzaro's statements also subtly confirm that Nvidia plans to prioritize AI performance in future graphics cards to power AI frame rendering technologies like DLSS.
