  1. iPhones will soon be made in India by an Indian company, as Tata has acquired the Wistron unit to become the first Indian iPhone maker. Wistron, the Taiwan-based contract manufacturer for Apple, has decided to sell a 100 percent stake in the Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) unit to Tata Electronics for a deal price of $125 million (nearly Rs. 1,040 crores). With the new takeover, Tata will set itself as the first-ever iPhone maker in India. Both companies reached this decision after Wistron approved the deal post its board meeting on October 27. Rajeev Chandrashekhar, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology, has also confirmed the development with his post on X. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's PLI scheme, Tata Group will begin making iPhones in India within the next two and a half years. These Apple devices will be up for sale in both domestic as well as global markets. He also shared a press release along with his post, which mentioned that Wistron has "granted approval to its subsidiaries, SMS InfoComm (Singapore) and Wistron Hong Kong Limited, to sign the share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL)." Once both parties sign the relevant agreements, the deal will move towards the next step of clearing further approvals. Tata has been in talks over the takeover of the Wistron unit for some time now. In July, it was reported that the conglomerate was close to acquiring Wistron by August. However, there has been a delay of a few months in the plan. As per the report, Tata will engage in the assembling of iPhones in India at the Wistron unit that currently operates an iPhone assembly plant near Bengaluru. The company has also been previously reported to be planning to open 100 stores across the country that will only sell Apple products. Apart from the recent takeover, Apple iPhones are assembled in India by two global suppliers – Foxconn and Pegatron — in Tamil Nadu. In fact, this year, India started selling 'assembled in India' iPhone 15 models on launch day for the first time. 2. https://techxplore.com/news/2023-10-solar-tool-smart.html Designing buildings with solar cleverly incorporated into the design has just become easier, thanks to software developed at RMIT University. Building-integrated photovoltaics, or BIPV, are building features such as roof tiles, cladding and windows that double as solar panels. Depending on the dwelling, BIPVs can cover a greater area of a building, generating solar energy from different angles. They also look smart and can be customized. Despite the potential of BIPVs, conventional roof-mounted panels continue to account for the lion's share of new installations in Australia due to the extra complexity in predicting performance and sourcing BIPV technology. Now a team at RMIT has created software to help architects and engineers incorporate, source and cost BIPV in a building's conceptual design phase. The software is the first of its kind to be designed using Australian data. Project lead Associate Professor Rebecca Yang from RMIT's Solar Energy Application Group said she hoped the tool, called BIPV Enabler, would help make buildings greener. "This is the perfect solution for building designers and developers looking to select the right solar option to suit their design," said Yang, who is the director of the Australian PV Institute and driving the BIPV Alliance. "We're making integrated-solar a more attractive option to developers, slicing the time it would normally take to research and implement incognito solar devices. "This isn't just for new buildings either. Those looking to retro fit integrated solar into existing buildings will benefit too." The tool integrates product, regulation, technical, economic and construction data to create 3D models and detailed lifecycle simulations tailored to each building's planned location. It comes as the construction of Australia's first office tower to be fully clad in solar panels was announced last year. For architects like Nic Bao, BIPV Enabler is set to help bridge the gap between BIPV technology and architectural design. Bao, a Lecturer in Architecture at RMIT, said having a tool to effortlessly incorporate factors such as climate, building code and materials would make solar-savvy design easier. "There are so many technical factors to consider when integrating BIPV into a design that it hadn't been a po[CENSORED]r choice, which was a missed opportunity," he said. "Making BIPV design more accessible promotes sustainable development of energy-efficient buildings, while providing opportunities for low-carbon architecture." The other challenge faced by designers and developers using integrated solar is choosing and sourcing materials. BIPV Enabler helps with both, boasting Australia's first photovoltaic product database where Australian suppliers can be easily identified. Among the tool's features are maps, a 3D shape library, solar visualizations, hourly weather data and pricing information for materials and feed-in tariffs. Yang said BIPV Enabler also worked with computer-aided design programs and could be scaled and customized to incorporate other open-source datasets to suit changing needs. "We hope to see more buildings capable of generating solar electricity, while maintaining good design standards—a win for the planet and aesthetics," Yang said.
  3. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/gpu-pricing-index We track current GPU prices on all the best graphics cards and the latest additions to our GPU benchmarks hierarchy. We scrape eBay's sales data to get details on what sort of prices people are paying for GPUs — if you're interested in retail prices on current generation hardware, check our GPU price index. We provide monthly (-ish) updates on eBay's prices for the latest generation Nvidia Ada Lovelace, AMD RDNA 3, and Intel Arc Alchemist GPUs, as well as previous generation Nvidia Ampere, Turing, AMD RDNA 2, and RDNA graphics cards. We've switched to quarterly analysis, with the intervening months showing the pricing only. The past few months have seen a bit of up and down movement, curiously, with some of the top Nvidia cards jumping up in prices during August and then coming back down in September. We've also seen the launch of the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, RX 7800 XT, and RX 7700 XT (with the Arc A580 arriving this month, so it's not in the data yet). We're in October now, so our last full month of data comes from September. We filter the sold listings on eBay, doing our best to remove junk listings (e.g. box only, image of card, bundles, broken cards, etc.) to collect average prices. Some people pay quite a bit more while others pay substantially less, but the month to month trends are the primary focus. Nvidia's RTX 40-series parts show a downward trend compared to last month (except for the 4070 Ti), but that's because most of their prices spiked upward during August. Back to school shopping fever, or people upgrading PCs using student loans? Or maybe just some oddities in eBay's data. Whatever the cause, the GPUs are mostly back to where they were in July. AMD's hardware also saw a few upticks in eBay pricing during August, and some different GPUs trended upward in September, but mostly things are still trending down. We suspect the supply of many of these GPUs is also becoming more limited, though there are no clear patterns in how many GPUs will be sold each month. July was a slower month, August picked up slightly, and September was down on units sold again. We probably need to shift all the RTX 30-series and RX 6000-series cards down into the "legacy" table below, but we'll leave them for now. Most of the Nvidia cards appear to have bottomed out on pricing, with a slight upward trend during September. Perhaps that's just people hoping to get a little bit extra for the cards during the holidays, though with the launch of faster and generally better RTX 40-series and RX 7000-series parts, I don't really see that working out. The previous generation GPUs (n-2 now) aren't moving as much overall. July say a 6% drop in average prices, August showed no change at all, and September shows a slight 2% dip. While these cards are mostly still capable (at least on the higher spec models), our latest testing of Alan Wake 2 shows how these older GPUs are really starting to show their age. Even the RTX 2080 Ti didn't mange great results in that game. But if you're not worried about maxed out settings and path tracing, and just want a modest GPU for gaming purposes, these previous generation cards can still be competitive. The best values unfortunately are on cards at the lower end of the performance ladder, or cards that lack more recent features. AMD's RX 5000-series for example are basically going for a song these days. $115 for an RX 5700 XT? That still competes with the RTX 2070, RTX 3060, and Arc A770. But it has no support for ray tracing, plus it was po[CENSORED]r for GPU mining for a while, so people don't seem as interested in picking one up these days.

  7. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-67210216 The Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, has accused Israel of a "clear breach" of international law in Gaza. He told the BBC there was "no justification for the withholding of essential supplies" from the people of Gaza. His comments came amid resignations within the party over Sir Keir Starmer's stance on the crisis. The Labour leader has repeatedly insisted Israel has a right to defend itself within international law. More than 1,400 Israelis have been killed since Hamas launched its attack on 7 October, according to Israeli authorities - the vast majority in the initial assault. More than 220 are believed to have been taken hostage inside Gaza. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 5,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel's air strikes began in response, and according to the Palestinian health ministry in the occupied West Bank, 91 Palestinians have been killed there since 7 October. Fifteen Labour officers resign over Gaza policy Starmer condoned war crimes, says former Labour MP Starmer writes to Labour councillors over Gaza stance Speaking after an Institute for Government event in London, Mr Sarwar said: "There is no justification for the withholding of essential supplies; water, electricity, medicine and food from the people of Gaza. It is a clear breach of international law." "There is no grey area. International law is clear. Withholding of water, energy and essential supplies is a breach of international law and therefore there must be a immediate humanitarian corridor opened so that is accessed by the people in Gaza." He said he made his remarks "whilst unequivocally condemning Hamas" and called for "a de-escalation of violence" and the end of "rocket fire coming into and out of Gaza". "We must condemn Hamas but we cannot pretend that Hamas is the Palestinian people," he added. Labour resignations Mr Sarwar's comments come amid a number of resignations of Labour party members and elected officials across the UK, including 15 officials in Scotland. Nine officers in a Glasgow ward, including a Labour peer, and six in Edinburgh stood down earlier this week. The Glasgow Kelvin officers accused Scottish Labour of "stifling democracy" after a motion calling for an end to military action was ruled out of order. Asked about Labour officers resigning their positions in Glasgow and Edinburgh constituency Labour parties (CLPs), Mr Sarwar said he disputed claims the party was stifling debate. "I don't want to trivialise the issue by talking about individual CLPs… it's being talked about nationally and right across the country," he said. 'A right to defend herself' Two councillors who resigned from the party in Oxford have objected to comments made by Sir Keir on a radio programme earlier this month. Pressed at the time on whether cutting off water and power supplies into Gaza would be appropriate as part of an Israeli response, he said: "I think that Israel does have that right, it is an ongoing situation. "Obviously, everything should be done within international law, but I don't want to step away from the core principles that Israel has a right to defend herself," he added. Sir Keir later clarified those comments by explaining he was speaking about Israel's right to defend itself, not to cut off power and water, and that Israel should respond within international law. Pro-Palestine march in London The crisis in the Middle East has led to protests in the UK and abroad Meanwhile, the first minister has said his mother-in-law, who is stuck in Gaza, has "lost hope". Elizabeth El-Nakla and her husband Maged travelled to the region before the Hamas attack and subsequent Israeli reprisals left them trapped. In a statement in the Scottish Parliament, Humza Yousaf reiterated calls for a ceasefire, an increase in aid and a global refugee settlement scheme to be created for those who wish to flee. Speaking about his in-laws, Mr Yousaf said he and his wife Nadia could barely sleep for worry. "Throughout the day, the 100 people in the family home must ration their food. The adults barely eat, my mother-in-law only ate cashew nuts yesterday, they ration so the children in the house don't end up malnourished, but time is running out," he said. "I spoke to my mother-in-law this morning. She feels helpless and has lost hope. She told me she feels as if the UK Government has forgotten about her. "Please don't interpret my point as a political one, it is not," he added. An aerial image of Gaza City on May 19 2023, five months before the latest violence. About a million people have fled urban areas in Gaza since 7 October Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross said his party "stands with Israel", but also with civilians in Gaza, saying: "The Palestinian people are not Hamas. "They are civilians, they are innocent, they are simply caught in a terrible situation. And they are also suffering from the tyranny, exploitation and oppression of Hamas terrorists." Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton praised the "quiet dignity" with which the First Minister has carried himself since the Hamas attack, saying that both those in Gaza and Israel "have the right to live free from fear"
  8. https://www.cycleworld.com/motorcycle-reviews/ducati-multistrada-v4-rs-first-ride/ Since adopting the Granturismo V-4 platform in 2021, the Multistrada has come to represent the more sober side of Ducati’s two-wheel output. A Multistrada Rally, for example, may have a 19-inch front wheel and genuine off-road ability and a Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour a world-class package of state-of-the-art rider aids, but both are Multistradas at heart: engaging, versatile, and efficient all-rounders—a relatively sensible choice. So here’s a surprise, and a most welcome one at that, because the new Ducati Multistrada V4 RS, the sixth variant in the current range of V-4 Multi crossovers, is the most unexpected, the most powerful, and at $37,995, the highest priced Multistrada yet. And it will be, by some margin, one of the most outrageous Ducati seen for some time. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS on display stand in front of garage Our Multistrada V4 RS test unit was equipped with Pirelli slicks for a day at the track.Ducati Right now, forget the Multistrada as a machine to waft you and your partner across swaths of the country without fuss or drama, because this Multistrada is essentially a Panigale V4 S superbike on stilts. A long-range troublemaker looking to rip it up on track and road alike. Fuss and drama are what it’s all about. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS Differences It’s supposed to blow your mind, this one. That means ditching the low-maintenance, spring-valve Granturismo V-4 that has propelled the Multis so dutifully since 2021 in favor of the mighty, all-conquering animal that is 1,103cc Desmosedici Stradale. Lifted from the Streetfighter V4, it makes 180 hp—or 192 hp with an optional, full-noise Akrapovič race system installed. It booms and clatters and its dry clutch rattles. Everyone knows the RS is coming. Like the V4 Pikes Peak, hitherto the sportiest of the current Multistradas, the RS runs superlight forged 17-inch Marchesini wheels instead of conventional 19-inch rims, along with new chassis geometry that sits the bike on its nose and sets it to turn like a pure sportbike. There’s Öhlins Smart EC semi-active suspension and, from mudguard to beak, a notable acreage of featherlight carbon bodywork. A new aluminum monocoque frame is attached to a single-side swingarm and light-as-a-timepiece titanium subframe. A unique Centro Stile–designed livery echoes the MotoGP factory Ducatis and each bike’s production number is carried on plate mounted on the triple clamp. Oh, and integrated panniers are also available. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS subframe details Bags can be attached to the Multi V4 RS’ titanium subframe.Ducati The contradictions and oxymorons are compelling. “Trackday tourers” that do it all have been tried before. Priced close to $38K, which is $6,000 above the Pikes Peak ($31,595), and billed by Ducati as uncompromising and the most exciting Multistrada yet seen, the pressure is certainly on the RS to deliver in an array of riding environments. On the Track With the Multistrada V4 RS Cycle World was invited to test the RS at the Autodromo di Modena racetrack in northern Italy, which, sadly, meant no road riding and that the touring side of the equation was left unaddressed for now. However, we know the track well and have ridden multiple bikes here before—even a Pikes Peak Multi in recent times; comparisons are possible to an extent. Accelerating up the pit lane onto the start-finish straight for the first time, the RS’ immense drive felt dramatic, possibly because of its shorter final gearing but probably because our subconscious was expecting the sharp but far less brutal acceleration of a normal Multistrada. In a bike full of surprises, the move to a Panigale-derived Desmosedici Stradale V-4 is perhaps the biggest of them all. The non-desmo 1,158cc Granturismo engine it replaces makes 170 hp at 10,500 rpm and 92 lb.-ft. of torque at 8,750 rpm and is hardly a shrinking violet. It’s smooth at low rpm too, and features extra wide service intervals, including a 36,000-mile valve check, ideally suiting the Multistrada’s high-mileage adventure motorcycle profile. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS right side engine details A Desmosedici Stradale V-4 powers the Multistrada V4 RS, replacing the standard Granturismo.Ducati The angrier, heat-churning Stradale, meanwhile, retains Ducati’s signature desmo valve system and conventional service intervals. It revs higher to peak at 180 hp at 12,250 rpm (don’t forget that 192 hp with the full Akrapovič system) while peak torque is a claimed 87 lb.-ft. at 9,500 rpm, a chunk less than the Granturismo’s 92. On this tight and twisty racetrack, you instinctively rev it hard—the frictionless Stradale V-4 demands it—shifting from second gear to third and fourth, then fifth gear on the straight when the shift lights illuminate. This is true racebike territory. The digital rev counter builds as the V-4 revs with liquid fury. There’s really no such thing as a slow Multistrada but when the V4 S is peaking at 10,00 rpm, the new RS is still revving toward maximum power at 12,250 rpm and will happily continue into 13,000 rpm. On paper, torque is down compared to the “normal” Multi, but on track, and using just the upper 25 percent of the rev range, you don’t miss the comparative lack of grunt. Out of Modena’s final turn, with the anti-wheelie on a low setting, the front wheel hovers above the surface as the power kicks and shovels down the main straight. The quickshifter is perfectly slick and, this being a premium Ducati, there’s a sizable raft of other sophisticated rider aids to help you extract the most out of the bike’s performance. There are four riding modes: Sport, Touring, Urban, and a Race mode to replace the Multi’s usual Enduro setting. Each riding mode also controls the level of intervention of the lean-sensitive rider aids. Like the Panigale and Streetfighter, there are also four power modes: low, medium, high, and full. Even in the high-power mode, there is a reduced torque in first, second, and third gear. Another significant change from Multistrada convention is the introduction of a 17-inch front wheel to replace the 19-inch front on the standard Multi, the Pikes Peak being the other exception. These Marchesini rims are a sizable 6 pounds lighter, which quickens the steering and saves on unsprung weight and opens up the options for track-focused rubber. Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV Corsa are the OE fitment but our testbike wore Pirelli slicks. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS left turn lean on race track Steering is quick and feedback is excellent with 17-inch wheels and revised chassis geometry on the Multistrada V4 RS.Ducati Ducati isn’t yet revealing the RS’ overall weight, but the introduction of that titanium subframe saves another 5.5 pounds. A lighter battery shaves off another 3.1 pounds, and with the optional race exhaust installed the estimated final figure could be close to 452 pounds, which would make the RS just 55 pounds heavier than the Streetfighter V4 S. The premium Multistrada V4 S and new Grand Tour both use the familiar Skyhook Marzocchi semi-active suspension, whereas the new RS uses Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 units similar to the Panigale V4 S, Streetfighter V4 S, and Pikes Peak. Long-travel, semi-active suspension is ideal for long-distance performance, but less so for the racetrack and could be seen as a red flag to sporty riders but the feel and feedback from the Öhlins units are exquisite. The RS instilled so much confidence that soon the traction control was turned down to the minimum and the anti-wheelie was turned off altogether. You can feel the limit approaching as if riding a crisply set-up sportbike. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS left turn lean on race track Superbike performance and handling with comfortable touring ergos, it nearly seems too good to be true…Ducati Each riding mode changes the damping characteristics of the suspension. Sport mode will probably be the go-to option for the road, but in Race mode the suspension works immaculately on track, with far less dive on the fork and overall control midcorner. The steering is direct and accurate—you simply forget you’re riding a high-rise motorcycle. Feel from the front end is so much more confidence-inspiring than what is generated by the standard 17-inch front wheel. It wants to carry corner speed and, given its ample ground clearance, there’s no reason to disappoint. Braking is by Brembo: Stylema monoblock calipers and 330mm discs up front with a radial master cylinder and corning ABS. These race-spec stoppers are the same as you’d find on the Multistrada V4 S and Pikes Peak, but now they are stopping less weight. On the track, they are fade-free and faultless, and the high riding position and upright stance results in excellent stability. The cornering ABS is superb; even at a solid trackday pace, it’s not intrusive and can be relied upon. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS front wheel details Brembo Stylema calipers and 330mm discs are shared with the S and Pikes Peak Multis, and are more than capable for fade-free trackday shredding.Ducati Ducati has added a more progressive rear brake lever—something it did on the Multistrada Rally—and changed the rear master cylinder to make it brake sharper and more usable. Because the RS runs a similar engine to the Panigale and Streetfighter, this allows the introduction of a three-stage Engine Brake Control, which allows you to control the amount of engine-braking from the V-4 and is a first for the Multistrada range. What About the Touring Bit? A relatively upright and tall riding position gives a slightly unwieldy position on track at first, but you instinctively adapt. Its stance is closest to that of the Pikes Peak, which means it should be fully comfortable for at least a couple of 5.8-gallon tanks of gas. There is an Urban riding mode that drops maximum power to 113 hp and reduces the power in all gears if you choose to venture out on those damp and cold days. An extensive list of touring-oriented electronic rider aids and high-tech features, including radar detection, makes the RS the most advanced Multistrada ever. In fact, it’s one of the most advanced bikes on the market as it combines the racy tech of the Streetfighter and Panigale with the proven touring and distance-focused electronic wizardry of the Multistrada range. For example, you have track-focused rider aids including changeable engine-brake control, and also Vehicle Hold Control, backlit switch gear, ACC, blind spot detection from that radar. Don’t forget the Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspension. All this is managed via a familiar 6.5-inch TFT dash with Ducati Connect. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS with saddlebags installed Slap some bags on the Multistrada V4 RS and hit the road for your favorite track.Ducati Other touches worth noting are a new heat shield, closable air deflectors, and an air-cooled phone compartment, all of which were first seen on the Multi Rally. Having sampled the RS on a race circuit we are eager to try it on the road to see if its distance work can match its mind-bending speed and incredible feel on track. A 180 hp, free-revving beast of a V-4 in a chassis that possesses many of the qualities of the excellent Streetfighter and Panigale, mixed with the all-round versatility of the Multistrada, makes for an intoxicating blend that ticks all boxes. 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 RS left turn lean on race track A Panigale on stilts might be the best description of the 2024 Multistrada V4 RS.Ducati For now, we can say that the RS delivers superbly on track and that the prospect of riding it fully loaded, cruise control on, down the unrestricted German autobahn, on route, perhaps, to some tire-frazzling laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit is about as exciting as sport-touring can get. We can’t wait.
  9. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/67130077 Leicester City overcame a stubborn Sunderland side to move eight points clear at the top of the Championship table with their eighth consecutive league win. James Justin leapt highest at the near post to meet a corner with a towering header to put the hosts ahead early on. Twice goalkeeper Anthony Patterson pushed Leicester efforts on to the post as they searched for a second before half-time, first foiling Stephy Mavididi before getting a touch on a Kelechi Iheanacho shot. Sunderland were then controversially denied a penalty kick just before the break, with Wout Faes appearing to bring down Daniel Neil with a sliding tackle. Patterson continued to frustrate the hosts after the break, with crucial saves from Cesare Casadei, but the Black Cats failed to find an equaliser as they suffered a third consecutive defeat to drop to ninth in the table. Relive Tuesday's EFL action as it happened Leicester's fourth successive home win without conceding a goal - the first time they have achieved the feat since 1973 - is enough to edge them further ahead of second-placed Ipswich Town, who travel to Bristol City on Wednesday. Another night of celebrations for the Foxes started with a minute's applause and moment of poignant reflection for the five people, including chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in a helicopter crash outside the stadium five years earlier. Enzo Maresca's table-topping Foxes are looking to replicate the first major success the club enjoyed under the stewardship of the late Thai businessman - and his son Aiyawatt, who remains in control of City - which was winning promotion back to the Premier League as Championship title winners in 2014. A minute's applause was held at the King Power Stadium to remember the five people who died in the tragic helicopter crash outside the ground five years ago Both sides lined up in a poignant moment of reflection for those who died in the helicopter crash outside the ground five years ago As the fastest side to amass 36 points since the second tier was rebranded as the Championship two decades ago, the Foxes are seven points better off after 13 games than that title-winning side were at the same stage. Sunderland started strongly against their high-flying hosts, playing with an intense press and daring attacking approach against a side that has quickly become accustomed to dominating possession on their return to the Championship. Luke O'Nien teed Jack Clark up for the game's first chance after seven minutes, but goalkeeper Mads Hermansen did well to smother the attempt at the back post. A Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall corner kick soon after found one-time England international Justin unchallenged to thump his header past Patterson, who went on to deny the Foxes a second goal when he directed a low Mavididi shot on to the post with his foot. Faes' attempted block on a Clark shot called Hermansen into action again at the other end, but it was a header from Jobe Bellingham from the resulting corner kick that should have had the visitors level. The 18-year-old midfielder - and younger brother of England and Real Madrid star Jude, who is reportedly being scouted by the Spanish giants and his sibling's former employer Borussia Dortmund - could only balloon his wayward header from six yards over the crossbar and on to the roof of the net. A fingertip save from Patterson after Iheanacho attempted to angle a shot across the goalkeeper again proved crucial, with the effort coming off the post. And while the woodwork twice saved the Foxes, the lack of action from referee Keith Stroud when Neil was bundled over spared the hosts from facing a penalty kick in the last minute of the first half. Patterson kept Casadei out twice in two minutes after the break to ensure the atmosphere remained tense at a packed King Power Stadium. Iheanacho went on to curl the Foxes' best chance of a second goal wastefully wide before he was replaced by former England striker Jamie Vardy. Sunderland created a number of chances in an attempt to rescue a point, but substitute Abdoullah Ba's wild effort over the crossbar when aiming at an unguarded net late on summed up their miserable night in front of goal.
  10. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-67173008 More support is needed to prevent babies and young children developing mental health problems in later life, leading doctors say. Their report shows there is growing evidence that intervening very early on - from conception to the age of five - may help stop conditions arising or worsening. The Royal College of Psychiatrists is calling for more specialist services. The government says the mental health of children and parents is paramount. Officials say they are investing more in expanding NHS services, alongside funding programmes designed to support children and caregivers. NHS data shows about 5% of two to four-year-olds struggle with anxiety, behavioural disorders and neurodevelopmental conditions including ADHD. The Royal College of Psychiatrists' report suggests half of mental health conditions arise by the age of 14, and many start to develop in the first years of life, making early action "vital". Dr Trudi Seneviratne, from the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych), said the majority of under-fives with mental health conditions were not receiving the level of support needed "to help them become productive, functioning adults and reach their full potential". She added: "The period from conception to five is essential in securing the healthy development of children into adulthood. "Unfortunately, these years are often not given the importance they should be, and many people are unaware of what signs they should be looking out for. "Parents, carers and society as a whole have a critical role to play. This includes securing positive relationships and a nurturing environment that supports the building blocks of a child's social, emotional and cognitive development." Dr Seneviratne says anyone concerned about a child's persistent behavioural issues or eating and sleeping problems should seek health advice. RCPsych experts suggest a number of ways to prevent mental health issues in babies and children, including providing support for the mother in pregnancy, working with parents to promote attachment to their child and recommending parenting programmes in the early stages of a child's life. They say many factors can increase the risk of problems developing in childhood, such as alcohol or substance misuse during pregnancy and adverse experiences in childhood including domestic violence, physical and emotional neglect and abuse. The report's recommendations include: New specialist services across the UK for under-fives, their parents and carers, with timely access to a team of people including speech and language therapy, psychologists and social workers More training for healthcare workers on how to spot and support under-fives with mental health problems More research on the best ways to help young children Better data collection on young children experiencing problems Support to help the wider po[CENSORED]tion gain a greater understanding about mental health of under-fives The wide-ranging report is backed by a number of organisations including Unicef UK, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Joanna Moody, from Unicef UK, said: "Mental health in infancy and early childhood is often overlooked, yet it lays the foundations for a child's future." She said the report provided "a strong evidence base for action to prioritise mental health right from the start of children's lives". She added many services have a "vital role" in supporting children's mental health, including early education, social services, maternity, health visiting and primary care.
  11. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67198270 This article contains descriptions of violence which some readers may find distressing. The Israeli military held a screening for journalists on Monday of raw footage recovered from Hamas body cameras, in an effort to remind the world of the brutality of the attack on Israel two weeks ago. The bodycam footage, cut together with clips from CCTV, dashboard cameras and the mobile phones of both Hamas gunmen and victims, showed in stark detail the sheer horror visited on a music festival and family neighbourhoods in southern Israel. The Israeli military also released documents which they said were recovered from dead Hamas members, containing detailed operational planning and instructions for attacking the neighbourhoods and taking hostages. The 43 minutes of footage screened at a military base near Tel Aviv on Monday was distilled from hundreds of hours of footage collected since the attack, the Israeli military said. It contained clips of Hamas gunmen cheering with apparent joy as they shot civilians on the road, and later stalking the pathways of kibbutzim and killing parents and children in their homes. One traumatic sequence, taken from home cameras inside of a kibbutz, showed a father rushing his two young boys into an above ground shelter, seconds before Hamas attackers threw a grenade in, killing the father and wounding the boys. After the two boys, bloodied and in shock, had staggered back into their home screaming, a Hamas gunman calmly entered and looked through the fridge in front of them, pausing to take a drink before walking out again. One of the boys cried to his brother: "Daddy is dead, this is not a prank," and repeated "Why am I alive?" His brother was apparently blinded by the grenade. The military spokesman present at the screening was unable to say whether they survived. Still from dashcam footage shows shattered windscreen of car after Hamas gunman shot at it Dashcam footage showed the moment Hamas gunmen fired at a civilian car, cracking the windscreen The film also contained an audio recording of one of the Hamas gunmen calling home to his parents in Gaza from the phone of a victim to boast that he had "killed at least 10 Jews with my bare hands". "Please open WhatsApp and look how many dead," he implored his parents repeatedly, apparently referring to pictures or video he had sent home showing the attack. "Your son killed so many Jews," he said. "Mum, your son is a hero." Another sequence showed one Hamas gunman shooting the apparently dead bodies of civilians inside a kibbutz in a celebratory manner, and an attempt to decapitate someone who appeared to be still alive using a garden hoe. The footage, some taken from mobile phones of victims, also showed the abject fear of those who hid in safe rooms and shelters as the sounds of gunfire and explosions came closer. The decision to screen the raw footage for journalists reflected an apparent frustration among senior ranks of the Israeli military that the media coverage of Hamas's brutal attack on 7 October had given way to coverage of Israel's air strikes against Gaza and the humanitarian crisis created by Israel's order for Gazans to migrate south. Speaking to the assembled international media after the screening, Major General Michael Edelstein, a former IDF Gaza division commander, said he had been "shocked" by the coverage. "We see that some of the channels are trying to compare what Israel is doing and what those vile terrorists are doing," General Edelstein said. "I cannot understand anyone who compares," he said. "And after what we have shared with you, you should know it." More than 1,400 Israelis have been killed since the Hamas attack on 7 October, according to Israeli authorities - the vast majority in the initial assault. Family of French-Israeli soldier Eli Valentin Ghenassia, who was killed in Kibbutz Beeri on 7 October, grieve at his funeral More than 1,400 Israelis were killed when Hamas attacked communities in the south of Israel, near the Gaza Strip After the screening of the footage on Monday, a virtual reality experience was available, created using video from the first responders who entered family homes in the kibbutzim targeted by Hamas. The Israeli military also released two instruction manuals taken from dead Hamas gunmen, containing detailed plans for the attack and for taking hostages. "They must shoot down as many victims as possible, take hostages and take some of them to the Gaza Strip using various cars," said one part of the manual. In a separate document specifically about hostages, the Hamas operatives were instructed to "kill the problematic and those who pose a threat" and gather others together to use as "cannon fodder". Israel's military is still reeling from the 7 October attack, the worst breach of its defences in the south in 50 years. Despite huge resources being put into destroying Hamas tunnels and expanding Israel's security fence both below ground and out to sea, Hamas was able to storm and breach the fence in huge numbers. More than 1,000 militants crossed into Israel in the initial incursion, General Edelstein said on Monday. The first parts of the video compilation showed groups of pick-up trucks packed with Hamas gunmen, driving freely along Israeli highways and shooting civilians at will. The documents recovered from the bodies of the Hamas militants made it clear that Hamas "came with orders to slaughter and burn citizens", General Edelstein said. "They simply decided to burn families within their homes. And they took hostages alive, they were aiming to take children back into Gaza," he said. "Orders were there for how many to kill, how many to take as hostages. Orders were there to rape, all was written and ordered." Speaking before the screening, Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that members of the military had debated whether to show the footage, but that he had decided personally to go ahead. "We understand already that we need to create a collective memory for the future," he said. "We will not let the world forget."

  14. https://techxplore.com/news/2023-10-video-games-foreign-actors-extremists.html Video games are easy to exploit, and are being used by actors ranging from IS and Hezbollah for recruitment, to Russia, who use it to spread propaganda during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. This according to a new report from Psychological Defense Research Institute at Lund University in Sweden. Since the 2016 US Presidential election, many democratic governments have paid close attention to how foreign actors are using digital communication to further their agendas, in particular social media. Yet gaming platforms have been largely ignored, and now a new study from Lund University has identified up to 40 vulnerabilities within the gaming sphere. "It surprised us that the gaming sector, a global industry with billions of users, has been largely overlooked by most Western nations. Currently, it offers an immersive and easily accessible arena for persuasion and propaganda for hostile states, organized criminals, and extremist groups," says Jesper Falkheimer, one of the co-authors and Professor of Strategic Communication at Lund University. According to the researchers, there are several examples of video games being used as recruitment tools by terrorist groups from the beginning of the 2000s, with Hezbollah, Hamas, and Da'esh using video games for influencing different target groups. One early notable example is from 2003, when the video game Special Force was released by the Hezbollah Central Internet Bureau. Video games have also been used for war propaganda, for example, in the current war in Ukraine, where Russia have spread propaganda through Roblox, Minecraft and other games. One example is the Ukrainian MiG-29 pilot known as the Ghost of Kyiv who gained significant fame on social media for taking down invading planes during the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the pilot was fictional, and the footage used in some online videos was taken from the 2013 video game Digital Combat Simulator. Similarly, according to fact checks, a video claiming to depict the Israel-Hamas conflict was in fact footage taken from the gameARMA 3. "Compared with social media, the gaming domain has insufficient policies and mechanisms to cope with information influence campaigns. Nor are there sufficient avenues for researchers, journalists, and the industry itself to better understand the degree to which gaming platforms are currently being exploited. In other words, not only do we not know how serious the situation is, we also lack the means to find out," says Jesper Falkheimer. So what should be done to secure an industry that provides entertainment and communication for billions of users worldwide? The researchers say that lessons can be learned from social media platforms, as they have already been under scrutiny for the same issues. For example, voluntary agreements such as the EU Code of Practice on Disinformation reveal successes and also missteps that then would not need to be repeated. Any countermeasures should be designed as partnerships between the industry, players, and governments in a spirit of dialogue aiming to avoid major threats to democratic societies, they argue. "Freedom of speech and expression must always come first, much in the same way that the debate surrounding social media was framed primarily by this right. Raising awareness is the first step towards an open discussion on how to move forward with this pressing issue, especially given the current state of the world," concludes Jesper Falkheimer.
  15. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/qualcomm-snapdragon-elite-x-oryon-pc-cpu-specs Qualcomm is taking another stab at an Arm PC system-on-a chip, this time based on the new Oryon cores that come from its purchase of Nuvia. The new chip, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, will launch in laptops in mid-2024 and was unveiled today at the company's annual conference in Hawaii. The chips are the latest volley in the attempt to successfully move more Windows users onto Arm. While the operating system support is there, there have been performance and compatibility issues with the Snapdragon 8cx chips. Now, Qualcomm says that Snapdragon X Elite will deliver far better efficiency with equivalent or better performance than competitors (a claim we'll have to test next year). "We believe that this is like a pivotal moment for us," Kedar Kondap, senior vice president and general manager of compute and gaming at Qualcomm told Tom's Hardware in an interview. "Because what you will see with the Snapdragon X Elite platform is something you haven't seen before in terms of leadership, in terms of technology, performance per watt. You'll see the Qualcomm Oryon CPU distinguish itself in terms of its capabilities and the efficiency that it will drive." Qualcomm’s chip, using TSMC's 4-nanometer process on a single die, will have 12 "high-performance" Oryon cores on each chip going up to 3.8 GHz. However, of those 12 chips, the company says single- or dual-core boost up to 4.3 GHz is possible. The cores are batched into three clusters of four on the die. Qualcomm is pushing the chip as having "best-in-class" multi-threaded CPU performance. The company showed journalists charts of performance compared to a competitor's 10-core and 12-core laptop chips, showing up to twice the performance in Geekbench 6.1 at one-third of the power. (Qualcomm didn't name the chips in its presentation, but later told me the 10-core chip is a Intel Core i7-1355U and the 12-core chip is a Core i7-1360P). Compared to a 14-core chip on the same test (later clarified as the Intel Core i7-13800H), Qualcomm showed significant improvements in performance per watt, and it suggested the Snapdragon X Elite gets up to a 60% performance improvement. The company also claims a "50% better peak multi-thread performance" against an "ARM-based competitor." Though it didn't say which competitor, in a briefing Qualcomm suggested it was the "latest M2," presumably the standard Apple M2. That slide doesn't even have an accompanying chart, making Apple's briefings looks deeply technical in comparison. All of this is to say that while it sounds exciting, we'll need to test a laptop with one of these chipset to see how it really performs. The integrated graphics consists of Qualcomm's Adreno GPU, which it says delivers up to 4.6 Teraflops of performance. It supports a laptop screen up to 4K at 120 Hz with HDR 10, with external support for three 4K monitors or dual 5K displays. (Apple's M2 Pro only supports two external displays, while the M2 Max can handle four, depending on resolution and refresh rate). Again, Qualcomm used unnamed competitors in its comparirons, but later clarified when asked specifically that "Competitor A" is the Intel Core i7-13800H, while "Competitor B" is the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS. It claims the Snapdragon X Elite's GPU offers approximately twice the performance of the competition in 3D Mark WildLife Extreme at one-fourth the power, while it claimed 80% improvement at one-fifth the power against a different integrated GPU. Qualcomm isn't listing a specific TDP for the Snapdragon X Elite. I've been told that it "dynamically scales performance across various TDPs," which will seemingly depend on what laptop manufacturers choose to do with it. The company suggested that the chip will be in several form factors, including clamshells, 2-in-1s, and both fanless and actively cooled machines, the latter of which would almost certainly provide the strongest performance. All About AI Possibly because everything is about AI now, or possibly because Qualcomm has been building AI features for smartphones for a bit now, it's no surprise that Qualcomm is pushing the Snapdragon Elite X as a chip meant to handle generative AI tasks. "You will see the NPU, or the intelligence in the PC, get elevated to a level that no one has ever seen before…" Kondap said. "What we're focused on is taking all of the models that we all hear about, like Llama 2 and stuff, making sure they drive the best experience, and then enabling this whole ecosystem of applications as well as partnerships that ISVs [independent software vendors] and partners can take advantage of this NPU to drive a much better experience." Qualcomm claims you can run 13 billion parameters on device (it specifically called out Meta's Llama 2 open source language model). It also suggested it could run a 7-billion parameter model at 30 tokens per second. Qualcomm says its AI Engine has a 2.5 times faster tensor accelerator than previous laptop chips, with twice as much shared memory. Qualcomm is suggesting the Snapdragon X Elite's NPU is operating 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Kondap predicts that enterprise may be among the first to embrace AI, and that models running on device, as opposed to in the cloud, will be important for security. Another smaller NPU, the "Micro NPU" is part of another part of the chip that Qualcomm calls the "sensing hub," which includes… well, the sensors, including cameras, microphones, and also connectivity. This is the part of the chip controlling the Wi-Fi module (including Wi-Fi 7 support), and camera features (Qualcomm says it's an "always-sensing ISP"). Qualcomm states that the new chip supports Windows Studio Effects, but that's table stakes. Heck, Qualcomm already did that on Surface devices. The company also promises support for "many other AI-accelerated applications and experiences." The bet, then, is that many more AI apps are going to come with a focus on local performance. Efficiency, we're told For Apple, switching from x86 to Arm brought huge gains in efficiency. That's been the promise for Windows on Arm, but it hasn't materialized yet. Qualcomm is calling the Snapdragon X Elite's efficiency "game-changing." In a press release, Qualcomm claimed that the chip is efficient enough to support "multiple days of battery life." I suspect that includes time with the device asleep. The company hasn't ball-parked any numbers. On the one hand, that makes sense: Battery life depends on the device, including the size of the battery, as well as other parts like the display. On the other hand, we'll have to wait quite a while to see how long these chips last on our battery test. Over the summer, reports popped up that Qualcomm was requiring the use of its power management integrated circuits (PMICs) with the Oryon-based processors. Kondap said that Qualcomm's PMICs are "an option for OEMs to choose," and that the company has been providing them for "many years now." "We come from a legacy where, for us, power and performance per watt is very important in how we architect our platforms…" he said, pointing out all of the Snapdragon Elite X's features. "We control the power within our SoC very tightly, right? So we have a lot of, for example, dedicated power rails on how we manage power across different use cases and how this is managed. And there's a reason why we spend a lot of time thinking about this first, because it obviously matters, right? If you go back to any consumer and ask what's the most important thing to them, they will say battery life." Snapdragon X Elite laptops and Windows compatibility The Snapdragon X Elite will show up in computers from "leading OEMs" in mid-2024, according to Qualcom''s press release. As of this writing, there haven't been any announcements about who Qualcomm's partners are and what kinds of devices they plan to build. I'm told we'll hear more about partners during the Snapdragon Summit, though product specifics may be further out. "You'll start to see devices drive a good, premium experience," Kondap said. "So you'll see us in multiple form factors, right from whether they're thin and light fanless designs all the way to detachable laptops to clamshell. So you'll see us in a variety of form factors over time with the Snapdragon X Elite." He notes, however, that Qualcomm is "obviously not targeting high end gaming as a category with X Elite right now." Kondap suggests, that with partnerships with Adobe, Microsoft, and Da Vinci, that "casual content creation" will be a focus for the laptops, and perhaps "casual gaming." Perhaps the biggest worry I've had with Snapdragon-based laptops before is app compatibility. Some software has never been made native, and I've seen issues with games and anti-virus. Kondap tells me that in partnership with Microsoft, "significant" progress has been made. Part of this, Kondap suggests, is due to the Windows on Arm Dev Kit (previously known as Project Volterra). "We actually have lots of developers working on these platforms, optimizing specifically to porting their applications on Snapdragon," he said. That is the second part of a three-step process, he suggests. The first is that Qualcomm and Microsoft get the emulation up to snuff so that any app you open works. The second is getting developers to make native apps for Arm and Snapdragon. Third is getting developers to use the NPU, Oryon cores and other parts of the new chip to take full advantage of it. He said the emulation is looking "very promising," and that Qualcomm is going after a long list of applications - perhaps the top 200 to 300 apps. Of course, he points out that Microsoft has made its apps native, and that more anti-virus and VPNs, previously problematic apps, are becoming native. We'll see how well it all works when these laptops are released in 2024.

  18. https://techxplore.com/news/2023-10-pokemon-party-play-feature-team.html Niantic has always been big on bringing players together when it comes to their games. It's a key pillar in the design of "Pokemon Go" and "Monster Hunter Now." Players gather around events such as Raid Hour or hunt boosted spawns of a rare pink Rathian. They make friends face to face while accomplishing the goal of defeating a legendary Pokemon or carving parts from a rare creature. Now, the developer hopes to amplify that feeling togetherness through Party Play in "Pokemon Go." The new feature, which comes out soon, lets players team up in groups of up to four and challenge each other to catch Pokemon, spin stops or do activities such as defeating raids. The new feature is available in the Trainer Profile under a new Party Tab. Once you create a party, it creates a numerical code or QR code so that nearby friends can scan or enter the numbers. Doing that puts your friends in your game and you're all represented on the screen walking around together. The max party is four and the minimum is two with the leader being able to add new friends that players could meet along the way. So what's the point of Party Play? It allows for friendly competition with rewards. As a Party Play participant, if you reach goals such as catching 120 Pokemon, you can earn Ultra Balls or Mega Beedrill energy. It all depends on what the leader chooses for a challenge. Bigger than that though, Party Play also offers a new ability in raids called Party Power. It essentially double the damage of your next Charged Attack and it charges with every Fast Attack, according to a Niantic news release. That means more party members means that the Party Power charges faster. It could be a way for players to beat a raid if they're short on trainers. In a nice touch, being party of party means that players will automatically get a raid invite. Party Play could come in handy when challenging Greavard, which is coming to 3-star raids for Halloween. It will definitely be needed for Shadow Lugia Raids that come out around the same time. As for the nitty gritty of Part Play, players need to be the same distance from a Pokestop spin to get raids and other features to work. You can't send over your party code to a friend overseas and expect them to teleport beside you. Normally, Party Play lasts one hour and then it's over. That could work for Raid Hours, but Niantic is considering expanding that time limit for special events. Unfortunately, you can't track all your Party Play stats forever. They disappear when the session ends, but you can take photos of who caught the most Pokemon or defeated the most raids, and you can share to social media for longevity. The Activity Summary track five different categories: Pokemon, Throws, Adventure, Battle and General. Lastly, Party Play is available to trainers level 15 and above. To mark the release of Party Play, Niantic is offering free Evee shirts for player avatars.
  19. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/tsmc-our-3nm-node-comparable-to-intels-18nm-tech Although Intel's 20A (2nm-class) and 18A (1.8nm-class) fabrication technologies are set to be available earlier than TSMC's comparable manufacturing processes, the world's largest contract maker of chips believes that its N3P (3nm-class) technology will offer comparable characteristics with Intel's 18A, whereas its N2 (2nm-class) will beat it across the board in terms of power, performance, area (PPA) advantages. "Our internal assessment shows that our N3P […] demonstrated comparable [power performance area] to [Intel] 18A, my competitor's technology, but with an earlier time to market, better technology maturity, and much better cost," said C.C. Wei, chief executive of TSMC, at the company's earnings call (via The Motley Fool). "In fact, let me repeat again, our 2nm technology without backside power (N2) is more advanced than both N3P and 18A, and will be the semiconductor industry's most advanced technology when it is introduced in 2025." Intel's 20A fabrication technology, set to arrive in 2024, promises to be a breakthrough in terms of innovations as it will introduce RibbonFET gate-all-around transistors as well as backside power delivery network (BSPDN), two technologies that are designed to enable higher performance, lower power consumption, and increased transistor density. Meanwhile, Intel's 18A production node is designed to refine 20A's innovations further and offer further PPA improvements already in late 2024 – early 2025. By contrast, TSMC's 3nm-class N3, N3E, N3P, and N3X fabrication processes all rely on proven FinFET transistors and traditional power delivery network. The world's largest foundry does not seem to be in a hurry with its nanosheet GAA transistors and BSPDN, so the former will be introduced by TSMC's N2 node, set to enter high-volume production in 2H 2025, whereas the latter will be added to N2P that will start mass production in late 2026. One of Intel's main goals in the coming years is to beat TSMC is terms of technology leadership and land foundry orders from companies that need leading-edge nodes. To do so, Intel is set to introduce three advanced manufacturing processes over the next five quarters and initiate volume production on its 2nm and 1.8nm-class manufacturing technologies in 2H 2024 – 1H 2025. But TSMC believes that even its N3P node that will be used in 2025 will offer comparable PPA to Intel's 18A at a lower price, whereas its N2 will beat it, albeit a year after it will enter the market. Given that TSMC hasn't disclosed much in terms regarding numbers about its N3P and N2, it is hard to make any conclusions about their competitive capabilities against Intel's 18A. Meanwhile, it is evident that TSMC is very confident in its upcoming process nodes.
