Located 80 miles west of Shetland, Rosebank is the UK's largest untapped oil field and is estimated to contain up to 300 million barrels of oil. Development and production approval has been given to owners Equinor and Ithaca Energy, following reassurances over environmental concerns. The plan has faced widespread criticism due to its impact on climate change. Supporters of the project say it is vital for the energy security as it will reduce reliance on imports. Its owners say it will create about 1,600 jobs during the height of construction, support 450 UK-based jobs during its lifetime, and provide "a significant amount of tax revenues for the treasury". What is Rosebank and why is it so controversial? LIVE: Biggest untapped oil field approved by regulators It comes after the UK government said in July that it would issue hundreds of new licences for oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. But last month 50 MPs and peers from all major parties raised concerns Rosebank could produce 200 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and urged then Energy Secretary Grant Shapps to block it. It has been predicted that Rosebank could produce 69,000 barrels of oil a day at its peak, and about 44 million cubic feet of gas per day in its first 10 years. Production is expected to begin in 2026/27 but a senior executive with Norweigan state oil company Equinor has admitted the new field will not be electrified at that point. Electrification of the extraction process is one of the key industry pledges for reducing its production emissions. The oil and gas regulator, North Sea Transition Authority, said approval had been awarded "in accordance with our published guidance and taking net zero considerations into account throughout the project's lifecycle". Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it "makes sense" for the UK to use its own oil and gas supplies as the UK makes the transition to renewables. The UK has a target to hit net zero - emitting no more greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide than the amount taken out of the atmosphere - by 2050. "This is the right long-term decision for the UK's energy security," he added. What does net zero mean? Meanwhile Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho said its value to the economy would give the UK greater energy independence. "We will continue to back the UK's oil and gas industry to underpin our energy security, grow our economy and help us deliver the transition to cheaper, cleaner energy," she added. Opponents argue the oil and gas produced from Rosebank will be sold at world market prices, so the project will not cut prices for UK consumers. "It won't make the slightest difference to people's energy bills", the Green Party MP Caroline Lucas claimed on BBC Radio 4's Today programme. Equinor - which is the majority owner of Rosebank - confirmed that during a briefing for journalists earlier. "If the UK needs Rosebank oil, it will go to the UK through open market mechanisms", said Arne Gurtner, Equinor's senior vice president for the UK. 'Concerns unaddressed' Scotland's Energy Secretary Neil Gray raised concerns that the majority of what will be extracted from Rosebank will go overseas rather than contribute to domestic energy security. "We are therefore disappointed that approval has been given by the UK government while these concerns remain unaddressed," he added. His colleague Stephen Flynn - the SNP's Westminster leader and MP for Aberdeen South, a constituency with strong links to the oil and gas industry - did not oppose the oil field outright. He said that if the UK government was considering oil and gas projects "through the prism of energy security, net zero, jobs, opportunities and concurrent renewables investment... then of course it should go ahead." After being met by US officials in the Chinese border city of Dandong, Pvt King was taken by a state department aircraft to a US airbase in South Korea. He was expected to return to US soil on Wednesday afternoon, according to state department spokesperson Matthew Miller. Travis King's desertion and deportation: What we know Earlier on Wednesday, North Korea's state-run news agency said the country had decided to remove Pvt King, without offering further details. In the single- and multi-core benchmarks of Geekbench 6, the Core i7-14700KF scored 3092 points and 21713 points, respectively, making it 9% quicker than the Core i7-13700K in the single-core benchmark and 18% quicker in the multi-core benchmark. The Core i7-14700K's score in the multi-core test is close to that of the Core i9-13900KS, with just a 2.4% performance margin between the two. But the Core i9-13900KS still has the upper hand in the single-core test, where it's 9% faster (likely due to the memory differences between i7 and i9 chips). The highlight is the Core i7-14700K's clock speed, which reportedly reached a maximum frequency of 5.985 GHz during the test. The extremely high clock speed matches that of the Core i9-13900KS, which is the only Intel CPU to date that packs a turbo frequency of 6 GHz without the aid of overclocking. The fact that we're seeing nearly 6 GHz on the Core i7-14700K/KF suggests that Intel had more headroom in its Raptor Lake Refresh than originally expected. Previous reports estimated the minor architectural refresh would peak at 6 GHz at most — including the Core i9-14900K, meaning the Core i7-14700K/KF was expected to clock a lot lower to prevent internal competition between the two chips. MSI was recently spotted making 6.3GHz overclocking profiles in its motherboard BIOS for the Raptor Lake Refresh, providing even more evidence that we can expect the chips to break the 6 GHz barrier. Understanding how the different components of these systems interact with each other is a fundamental challenge for scientists trying to predict their behavior. Piecing together these interactions is like deciphering a code from an intricate set of clues. Scientists have developed hundreds of different methods for doing this, from engineers studying noisy radio channels to neuroscientists studying firing patterns in networks of interacting neurons. Each method captures a unique aspect of the interactions within a complex system—but how do we know which method is right for any given system sitting right in front of us? In new research published in Nature Computational Science, we have developed a unified way to look at hundreds of different methods for measuring interaction patterns in complex systems—and working out which ones are most useful for understanding a given system. A scientific orchestra The science of complex systems can be, well, complex. And the science of comparing and combining different ways of studying these systems even more so. But one way to think about what we've done is to imagine each scientific method is a different musical instrument playing in a scientific orchestra. Different instruments are playing different melodies with different tones and in different styles. We wanted to understand which of our scientific instruments are best suited to solving which types of problems. We also wanted to know whether we could conduct all of the instruments to form a harmonious whole. By presenting these methods as a full orchestra for the first time, we hoped we would find new ways of deciphering patterns in the world around us. Hundreds of methods, more than 1,000 datasets To develop our orchestra, we undertook the mammoth task of analyzing more than 200 methods for computing interactions from as many datasets as we could get our hands on. These covered a huge range of subjects, from stock markets and climate to brain activity and earthquakes to river flow and heart beats. In total, we applied our 237 methods to more than 1,000 datasets. By analyzing how these methods behave when applied to such diverse scientific systems, we found a way for them to "play in harmony" for the first time. In the same way that instruments in an orchestra are usually organized as strings, brass, woodwind and percussion, scientific methods from areas like engineering, statistics and biophysics also have their traditional groupings. But when we organized our scientific orchestra, we found that the scientific instruments grouped together in a strikingly different way to this traditional organization. Some very different methods behaved in surprisingly similar ways to one another. This was a bit like discovering that the tuba player's melody was surprisingly similar to that of the flute, but no one had noticed it before. Our weird and wonderful new orchestral layout (which sometimes places cello and trumpet players next to the piccolo player), represents a more "natural" way of grouping methods from all across science. This opens exciting new avenues for cross-disciplinary research. The orchestra in the real world We also put our full scientific orchestra to work on some real-world problems to see how it would work. One of these problems was using motion data from a smartwatch to classify activities like "badminton playing" and "running"; another was distinguishing different activities from brain-scan data. Properly orchestrated, the full ensemble of scientific methods demonstrated improved performance over any single method on its own. To put it another way, virtuosic solos are not always the best approach! You can get better results when different scientific methods work cooperatively as an ensemble. The scientific ensemble introduced in this work provides a deeper understanding of the interacting systems that shape our complex world. And its implications are widespread—from understanding how brain communication patterns break down in disease, to developing improved detection algorithms for smartwatch sensor data. Time will tell what new music scientists will make as they step up to conduct our new scientific orchestra that simultaneously incorporates diverse ways of thinking about the world.

The algorithms run on data taken from several bank accounts which are represented as nodes on a large, complex graph, and the software is programmed to focus on the part of the graph where it detects the most suspicious activity. For example, if there is a deposit of one million pounds, the software can monitor where this exact sum of money is being transferred—it has the ability to identify all combinations of related transactions that take place, even if the money is split between different accounts and outgoings. As detailed in a paper published in the Proceedings of the 2023 SIAM International Conference on Data Mining, lead researchers Dr. Huiping Chen and Dr. Grigorios Loukides, together with Dr. Robert Gwadera and Dr. Solon Pissis, say the new software is over three times more effective than current detection methods and can also analyze larger amounts of data. Current money laundering detection methods are rule-based or machine-learning (ML) based, which involve automated money laundering detection alarms set off by "suspicious" transaction scenarios like excessive cash deposits or process large sets of transaction histories to spot possible money-laundering activity along pre-set lines. These methods can be ineffective or slow to uncover instances of the crime, especially with the practice of smurfing. Both existing methods also require domain knowledge—for example, a bank must have successfully caught attacks in the past and used them to detect other attacks. If an organization does not have that data, which can be the case when dealing with novel or evolving money laundering methods, then that means reduced accuracy. Dr. Chen, a Ph.D. student at the Department of Informatics, said, "Money laundering presents a major global challenge. Developing a quicker and more effective approach to detecting this criminal activity signals a major step in the right direction to address the issue and provide reassurance for financial institutions." The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that between 2% and 5% of global GDP is laundered each year, roughly between £632 billion and over £1.5 trillion. Dr. Loukides states, "We have developed an optimal method that can find the best possible solution for detecting common classifications of smurfing attacks across millions of amounts of data, on average 3.2 times more effectively than the state-of-the-art methods currently used. "Our tool is also more automated and enables a far more rapid analysis of the data than what's currently available. By allowing money laundering experts to survey vast amounts of data faster than ever before, we can empower them to pick up on actors with bad intent efficiently. "We are now working to improve the tool further, with the aim of delivering a quicker speed than conventional approaches but with even higher accuracy." The software for the new tool is open source and freely available to access. Because it can be used with much larger amounts of data than conventional detection methods, researchers say it can analyze large amounts of data over long periods of time, filtering out and sounding an alarm to indicate to the bank when it detects suspicious activity. The approach has been tested using real data from an anonymous Czech bank, and on fictional cases based on predictions of common patterns and activity present in cases of real money laundering. In both instances, the algorithms were able to detect all suspicious patterns in the transactions. Researchers say the new tool also has potential use beyond the detection of suspicious financial activity, as it could optimize marketing campaigns by enabling retailers to find and detect the most profitable bundles of products; improving the accuracy of retail data at speed.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still playable despite the steeper system requirements associated with the new 2.0 update. German publication Computerbase has put the gaming handheld through its paces on the latest version of the game. The Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update improves the base game with many significant enhancements. However, the embracement of Nvidia's DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction technology is the belle of the ball, considerably making the game look even better than it already was. Rationally, the improvements have increased the system requirements to run the game. For example, an SSD is a must now, and CD Projekt Red advises consumers not to run Cyberpunk 2077 on a conventional hard drive or SD card in the case of the Steam Deck, as the lower bandwidth will likely hinder how the new content is streamed. The system requirements are higher, but they're still very much reasonable. Cyberpunk 2077 only commands a quad-core processor, 6GB of memory, 70GB SSD, and a somewhat modern graphics card with 6GB of memory as the minimum. The Steam Deck ticks all the boxes except for the graphics portion. As we already know, the custom AMD Zen 2 SoC (Aerith) inside the Steam Deck only has eight RDNA 2 compute units (CUs) up to 1.6 GHz at the chip's disposal. But it should be fine since the Steam Deck outputs games at a 1280x800 resolution, which isn't as taxing as 1080p (1920x1080). Valve's gaming handheld also taps AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2) technology to improve frame rates further. The Steam Deck, running on SteamOS 3.5 Preview, delivered an average frame rate around the 30 FPS mark at medium image settings and lower. The gaming handheld posted the best result at low settings with FSR on the balanced preset, achieving an average frame rate of 33.2 FPS and a 1% low of 25.4 FPS. Cyberpunk 2077 has a particular Steam Deck preset that balances performance and image fidelity. According to Computerbase's benchmarks, the Steam Deck preset attained average frame rates of 30.2 FPS and a 1% low of 22 FPS. The results are similar to using the medium preset with FSR on balanced. Computerbase subjectively claims that the medium preset looks better than the Steam Deck preset. Sadly, the high preset is out of reach for the Steam Deck. Even FSR can't rescue the gaming handheld from the taxing graphics. We're looking at 25.6 FPS and 19.2 FPS for average frame rates and 1% low, respectively, at high settings with FSR on balanced. CD Projekt Red puts a lot of effort into optimizing Cyberpunk 2077 for the different platforms. Contrary to the PC or current generation consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, the Steam Deck, a gaming handheld, doesn't have the same amount of firepower. It's great that mobile gamers can still enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 at a reasonable image quality and performance. The Phantom Liberty DLC is another story, though, as the developer cautions that it'll push the processor to the max.
