  1. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-66258416 Israeli MPs have passed into law a highly controversial bill despite mass protests which aimed to thwart it. The law removes the power of the Supreme Court to overrule government actions it considers unreasonable. It is the first to be approved in a series of bitterly contested reforms aimed at curbing the power of courts. The planned reforms have triggered some of the biggest protests in Israel's history, with opponents warning they imperil Israel as a democracy. The government argues that the measures are necessary to correct an imbalance in power which has seen the courts increasingly intervene in political decisions in recent decades. The so-called "reasonableness" bill was approved by 64 votes to 0, after the opposition boycotted the final vote. In remarks to the Knesset (parliament), opposition leader Yair Lapid called the step "a takeover by an extreme minority over the Israeli majority". But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted the court would remain independent. He said the bill was necessary for the government to "carry out policy in line with the decision of the majority of the citizens of the country". The vote brings to a head months of turmoil, with Israel's president warning political leaders on Monday that the country was "in a state of national emergency". On Monday morning protesters blocking a boulevard outside the Knesset were sprayed with water cannon and pulled off the road by police amid a cacophony of noise from drums, whistles and air horns. One protester was hurt, local media say, and six were arrested, police said. Other protesters surrounded a police van shouting "shame" at officers. A demonstrator lying in the street told the BBC he was was defying "dictatorship", adding that his grandfather had been a wartime codebreaker against the Nazis at the UK's famous Bletchley Park. Asked how long he would stay put he said: "We will never surrender". What is the crisis about? Another, Reut Yifat Uziel, the daughter of a paratrooper pictured in an iconic Israeli photograph of the capture of the Western Wall in the 1967 Middle East war, said she feared for her children's future. "Netanyahu kidnapped the country and I am worried it will become a theocracy," she said. Reut Yifat Uziel Image caption, Reut Yifat Uziel said she feared for her children's future The protesters - tens of thousands of whom marched some 45 miles (70km) from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem at the end of last week - set up camp in a park between the Knesset and the Supreme Court, which are located almost next to each other. Prime Minister Netanyahu was in parliament for the vote hours after being discharged from hospital following unscheduled surgery for a pacemaker on Saturday. The controversial reforms have polarised Israel, triggering one of the most serious domestic crises in the country's history. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets weekly since the start of the year in protest at what they say is an attack on democracy. The government says the reforms serve to strengthen democracy, arguing the Supreme Court has accrued too much power over politics in recent decades. Deepening the crisis, thousands of reservists, including pilots in the air force crucial to Israel's offensive and defensive capabilities, have vowed not to volunteer for service. Such unprecedented dissent has caused alarm over the potential impact on Israel's military readiness. Former heads of Israel's security services, chief justices, and prominent legal and business figures have also been vocal against the government's reforms. The measures have also been criticised by the US President Joe Biden, who in his most explicit comments yet called for the "divisive" reforms to be postponed.
  2. https://techxplore.com/news/2023-07-software-track-small-pixel.html Sandia National Laboratories’ Multi-frame Moving Object Detection System makes it possible for remote sensors to detect small moving objects that would normally be unseeable to both sensors and human eyes. Credit: Eric Lundin Remember what it's like to twirl a sparkler on a summer night? Hold it still and the fire crackles and sparks but twirl it around and the light blurs into a line tracing each whirl and jag you make. A new patented software system developed at Sandia National Laboratories can find the curves of motion in streaming video and images from satellites, drones and far-range security cameras and turn them into signals to find and track moving objects as small as one pixel. The developers say this system can enhance the performance of any remote sensing application. "Being able to track each pixel from a distance matters, and it is an ongoing and challenging problem," said Tian Ma, a computer scientist and co-developer of the system. "For physical security surveillance systems, for example, the farther out you can detect a possible threat, the more time you have to prepare and respond. Often the biggest challenge is the simple fact that when objects are located far away from the sensors, their size naturally appears to be much smaller. Sensor sensitivity diminishes as the distance from the target increases." Ma and Robert Anderson started working on the Multi-frame Moving Object Detection System in 2015 as a Sandia Laboratory Directed Research and Development project. A paper about MMODS was recently published in Sensors. Detecting one moving pixel in a sea of 10 million The ability to detect objects through remote sensing systems is typically limited to what can be seen in a single video frame, whereas MMODS uses a new, multiframe method to detect small objects in low visibility conditions, Ma said. At a computer station, image streams from various sensors flow in, and MMODS processes the data with an image filter frame by frame in real time. An algorithm finds movement in the video frames and matches it into target signals that can be correlated and then integrated across a set of video frame sequences. This process improves the signal-to-noise ratio or overall image quality because the moving target's signal can be correlated over time and increases steadily, whereas movement from background noise like wind is filtered out because it moves randomly and is not correlated. Before MMODS was deployed for remote sensing enhancement, Ma and Anderson demonstrated its effectiveness on simulated data with target objects as small as one pixel with a signal-to-noise ratio close to 1:1, meaning there is no distinction between signal and noise. These objects would normally be undetectable to both human eyes and sensors. The baseline detector system achieved a 30% chance of detecting a moving object. When MMODS was added to that system, it had a 90% chance of detection without increasing the rate of false alarms. In another demonstration, the researchers used MMODS to detect moving objects from live data collected with a remote camera at the peak of Sandia Mountain. Without prior knowledge of Albuquerque's roads, MMODS detected vehicles moving throughout the city. "Given that a modern video camera has about 10 million pixels, being able to detect and track one pixel at a time is a major advance in computer vision technology," Ma said. "MMODS has been proven to improve modern detection sensitivity by 200 to 500% and works for fast- and slow-moving objects, even in poor visibility conditions."
  3. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/zenbleed-bug-allows-data-theft-from-amds-zen-2-processors-patches-released AMD hasn't given specific details of any performance impacts but did issue the following statement to Tom's Hardware: “Any performance impact will vary depending on workload and system configuration. AMD is not aware of any known exploit of the described vulnerability outside the research environment.” AMD's statement implies there will be some performance impact from the patches, but we'll have to conduct independent benchmarks when the patches arrive for the consumer Ryzen products. In the meantime, we've asked AMD for any ballpark figures it can share. The Zenbleed vulnerability is filed as CVE-2023-20593 and allows data exfiltration (theft) at a rate of 30kb per core, per second, thus providing adequate throughput to steal sensitive information flowing through the processor. This attack works across all software running on the processor, including virtual machines, sandboxes, containers, and processes. The ability for this attack to read data across virtual machines is particularly threatening for cloud service providers and those who use cloud instances. The attack can be accomplished via unprivileged arbitrary code execution. Ormandy has posted a security research repository and code for the exploit. The attack works by mani[CENSORED]ting the register files to force a mispredicted command (meaning it eploits the speculative execution engine), as described below: "The bug works like this, first of all you need to trigger something called the XMM Register Merge Optimization2, followed by a register rename and a mispredicted vzeroupper. This all has to happen within a precise window to work. We now know that basic operations like strlen, memcpy and strcmp will use the vector registers - so we can effectively spy on those operations happening anywhere on the system! It doesn’t matter if they’re happening in other virtual machines, sandboxes, containers, processes, whatever! This works because the register file is shared by everything on the same physical core. In fact, two hyperthreads even share the same physical register file," says Ormandy. AMD describes the exploit much more simply, saying, "Under specific microarchitectural circumstances, a register in “Zen 2” CPUs may not be written to 0 correctly. This may cause data from another process and/or thread to be stored in the YMM register, which may allow an attacker to potentially access sensitive information." Ormandy says the bug can be patched through a software approach for multiple operating systems (e.g., Windows -"you can set the chicken bit DE_CFG[9]"), but this might result in a performance penalty. Ormandy says it is highly recommended to get the microcode update, but his post also has examples of software mitigations for other operating systems, too. Here's a list of the impacted processors, and the schedule for the release of the AGESA versions to OEMs: Below, we have a more detailed list with the model number of each impacted chip and the expected data for the new AGESA to arrive. AMD's AGESA is a code foundation upon which the OEMs build BIOS revisions. You will need to update to a BIOS with the above-listed AGESA code, or newer, to patch your system. “We are aware of the AMD hardware security vulnerability described in CVE-2023-20593, which was discovered by Tavis Ormandy, a Security Researcher at Google, and we have worked with AMD and industry partners closely. We have worked to address the vulnerability across Google platforms.” - Google spokesperson to Tom's Hardware. Ormandy says he reported the issue to AMD on May 15, 2023, but it still remains unclear if this was a coordinated disclosure — AMD didn't seem prepared for the announcement. Ormandy also credits his colleagues; "I couldn’t have found it without help from my colleagues, in particular Eduardo Vela Nava and Alexandra Sandulescu. I also had help analyzing the bug from Josh Eads."

  7. https://www.pcgamer.com/larian-ceos-advice-about-origin-characters-has-thrown-my-baldurs-gate-3-playthrough-plans-into-disarray/ From my very first hands-off preview of Baldur's Gate 3, I knew I was going to pick Astarion for my first playthrough. Like Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldur's Gate 3 not only lets you design a custom character, it also gives you a selection of origin characters with predefined histories and unique hooks, who otherwise serve as companions. It's one of the things I adored about Original Sin 2, and a system I was eager to see return. Astarion caught my eye because he's a sexy vampire spawn with quick wits, sharp fangs and a compulsion to drink the blood of his pals. Tragedy, sarcasm, blood—what more does one need? I also hoped this would allow me to sidestep the hours spent in the character creator. No more agonising decisions for me! But now Larian CEO Swen Vincke has thrown a spanner in the works and I'm second guessing myself. Vincke was chatting to the lads on Dropped Frames about origin characters, you see, and he had some advice for players: "We add these origin characters for replay value," he said. "I would always pick a custom, and discover my companions. I think the origins come into play when you replay it. That said, there's nothing wrong with picking an origin, it's just that the entire origin system is about where do you put the camera? In whose head do you put the camera?" He thinks it works better if you meet these characters as companions first, see how they react to things, learn their secrets, and then play them in a future playthrough to see things from a different perspective. "They work better if you've played the game already once because then you see it through their eyes. What was Shadowheart thinking the first time she saw you? And now you know when you're in their head." It's an annoyingly good point that's making me reconsider my plans. I fully expect to play Baldur's Gate 3 more than once, but I suspect a lot of players will decide that they don't have the time to replay an RPG where the critical path alone will take 80+ hours to finish. In that case, it seems like an origin character would be the best choice, allowing you to experience things you wouldn't be able to with a regular custom character. I could of course utterly ignore Vincke's advice and stick with my original choice. But I also love the idea of having someone as a companion and then getting to know them even better by playing them at a later stage. And custom characters offer a bit more flexibility at the cost of those unique origin hooks, like being a bloodsucker or listening to a creepy voice in your head. And we'll still be able to experience some of this if we recruit them as companions. Shit, I'm really torn here. This is too much for a Monday.
  8. said it would be an "abdication" of responsibility if ministers "play politics" with environmental policies. Mr Skidmore, the Conservative MP for Kingswood, said: "The net zero review I chaired demonstrated that net zero isn't just an environmental policy, but a key economic driver of future growth and investment that can transform Britain for the better, but this requires all political parties not to play politics with safeguarding our futures." He urged politicians to prioritise "the lives and health of the public and the opportunity for economic growth" ahead of "gamesmanship". "It is also really bad politics, given that the environment and taking action on climate change consistently polls third in the issues that voters care about," he added. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-66277211
  9. Many of the Phoenix Zoo’s 3,000 animals are used to hot weather. Still, with the city reaching a record 21 consecutive days of temperatures at 110 F or higher, zookeepers are having to get creative. That means everything from fans and misters to frozen treats like ice pops for most animals and blood-sicles — frozen blood refreshments — for the carnivores, said Drew Foster, the zoo’s director of living collections. “Even when it is incredibly hot, the staff still has to be here to take care of animals,” Foster said. “Instead of closing the zoo, we give animals access to climate-controlled areas and give them the care they need.” Millions of Americans are in the midst of a multiweek heat wave, with record-breaking temperatures being recorded from the desert Southwest to Florida. Animals are just as susceptible to the heat as people, and the National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings across the U.S., urging those in the heat wave’s path to stay hydrated, wear appropriate clothing and stay indoors when possible. "Elvis" a Galapagos Tortoise is cooled off with water in Phoenix "Elvis," a Galapagos tortoise, is cooled off with water in Phoenix on Wednesday. Patrick T. Fallon / AFP - Getty Images Zookeepers are particularly sensitive to these challenges, often having to care for a wide variety of animals with varying needs. Phoenix zookeepers set careful temperature parameters and tailor heat plans for all animals under their care, Foster said. The horned rhinos, elephants and tortoises love water showers, while many of the big cats prefer a gentle misting. Zookeepers carefully monitor animals for signs of heat stress, such as panting. Given the extreme heat, the Phoenix Zoo has also shifted its hours from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., opting to welcome visitors during the coolest parts of the day and closing certain enclosures when necessary. The zoo has, however, stopped short of completely closing. At the Houston Zoo, where temperatures continue to skirt 100° F, staff has maintained its opening hours. Most of the zoo’s animals come from warmer climates, but zookeepers are keeping a close eye on those that are less tolerant of heat — feeding the sea lions cold gelatin and ice and providing apes, monkeys and gorillas with climate-controlled rooms and shower pools. “One of our gorillas in particular loves the shower pool. It kind of looks like a person sitting in a hot tub,” said Kevin Hodge, the zoo’s vice president. “It’s really cute.” Many zoos are coping with how to adapt to a much hotter future, as global warming continues to affect the frequency and duration of heat waves. One analysis found that climate change has made extreme heat five times more likely in the Southwest. https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/blood-sicles-misters-zookeepers-look-keep-animals-cool-oppressive-heat-rcna95290

  11. The Open: Brian Harman leads by five at Royal Liverpool as Jon Rahm posts record scoreRahm's mood was in complete contrast to Rory McIlroy, who opted to skip speaking to the media and head to the putting green after missing seven birdie attempts of 17 feet or less. The Northern Irishman birdied three of his first five holes and missed birdie chances on the other two. And that proved the story of his round as he posted a two-under-par 69. It is his best round of the week and improves his score to three under but his quest to add to his four majors will drift into a 10th year. Fleetwood's challenge also appears to be over. A birdie at the second, coupled with Harman's opening bogey, briefly brought him to within three but it would prove to be his only one of the day, a solitary dropped shot on the 10th cancelling that out. At seven back, he knows he has experience of shooting low in the final round of a major, having twice carded 63 in the US Open - last month in Los Angeles and also finishing runner-up by one shot to Brooks Koepka in 2018. "Having Sundays and low rounds to draw on is always something positive," he said. "I would probably take that now and see if Brian beats it." England's Alex Fitzpatrick will have the family bragging rights at the dinner table this evening after three birdies in his 65 lifted him to four under, two better than his older brother and 2022 US Open champion Matt, who posted a 67. And Matthew Jordan's fairytale home Open continued. The 27-year-old, who hit his first chip at Royal Liverpool at the age of three and followed his dad and grandad in becoming a member at the age of seven, birdied four of his final five holes for a 69 and three under total.

The New York location is run by a man named Winston, played by Ian McShane, who has acted as a mentor to John in the films. Now, with The Continental mini-series from Peacock directed and executive produced by Albert Hughes (Dead Presidents, The Book of Eli), we'll get a look at the early days of Winston and the iconic hotel. Announced back in April of 2021, we finally got our first tease of the series this past April with details still vague, but we now have an official release: Friday, September 22. The second episode will air the following week, and the finale the week after that. The news was announced during the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel that featured Hughes, executive producer Marshall Persinger, action director Larnell Stovall, production designer Drew Boughton, and editor Ron Rosen. The exact details of the show are still minimal at best, with it focusing on Winston taking over the hotel and making it his own. In the teaser, we got a glimpse at past killers who have stayed at the hotel and a brief appearance of Colin Woodell at the end, who plays the younger Winston. Woodell is joined by Ayomide Adegun, who will portray a young Charon (based on Lance Reddick’s character); Peter Greene, who dons the fedora of Uncle Charlie (based on the tight-lipped body disposal expert); Mel Gibson as Cormac; Ben Robson as Frankie; Hubert Point-Du Jour as Miles; Jessica Allain as Lou; Mishel Prada as KD; and Nhung Kate as Yen. 17. During an emergency 'uh oh, everyone's mad' livestream today, Diablo 4 community manager Adam Fletcher said that this week's controversial patch, which heavily nerfed overall player damage output and survivability, is not something Blizzard plans to repeat. "We want to acknowledge everyone's feedback in regard to reducing player power," said Fletcher. "We know it is bad. We know it is not fun ... We also want to talk about what we were trying to achieve specifically with this patch and with the changes that players ended up seeing. And then, separately, we do want to also talk about how we don't plan on doing a patch like this ever again." Associate game director Joe Piepiora went on to explain some of Blizzard's thinking behind the patch. The goal was to slow down builds that were "blasting through content"—which is fun, Piepiora admitted—to keep any one stat, particularly cooldown reduction and vulnerable, from dwarfing the effectiveness of all the others. However, knowing that this week's nerfs were "painful," Diablo 4's developers say they're going to make changes—without totally backpedaling on the 1.1 patch. "Ultimately, what we're trying to do is make the game more fun for players," said game director Joe Shely. "The players are at the heart of everything we're doing, and if players can't believe that, as the game evolves, the game will get more fun, we're not accomplishing our goals." The following Diablo 4 changes are coming soon to alleviate some of the pain from the last patch: Nightmare dungeon difficulty will be hotfixed today, increasing the enemy density in them substantially, and in Helltide events as well Buffs to underused Sorcerer and Barbarian Legendary aspects in 1.1.1 Adding an additional stash tab in 1.1.1 Elixir stack size will be raised to 99 in 1.1.1 Respec gold costs will be reduced by "about 40%" in 1.1.1 The patch that will contain most of these changes, patch 1.1.1, will be here within two weeks, say the devs. Notably, they didn't say that they'll be rolling back any of the most controversial changes in patch 1.1, such as the massive nerf to Sorcerer’s Devouring Blaze. Diablo 4's leads also announced some changes that won't make it into the 1.1.1 patch, but are coming sometime in the future: Uber Uniques will drop a little more often than they do now Crowd control skills will be more effective with the increased enemy density changes World Tiers 3 and 4 will introduce new activities to incentivize you to work towards them The UI team is excited about skill loadouts, but there's no timeline for the feature—sounds like a long way off They want to improve filters to make it easier to compare items They plan to add more ways to farm specific Uniques and Aspects They'll talk about Sorcerer survivability on next week's stream, and are aware of the issue with too many one-shots at high tier difficulties They want to reduce inventory pressure that stems from players hanging on to too many extracted Aspects Necromancer minion survivability and viability is being looked at Treasure Goblins will drop Legendary items more often The devs also made some promises about how they'll handle future balance changes to avoid a repeat of this week's community shock and dismay. Future hotfixes and patches will have their notes published before they go live Future balance updates will allow "some builds to be overpowered" until "compelling alternatives" have been introduced Big balance shifts will "occur at predictable times, like at the start of a Season" However, if an OP build results from a bug, they'll still fix it quickly. (A recent example was a Barbarian build that relied on a bug that was fixed in 1.1.) A number of players are not thrilled that nothing in the latest patch is being reverted and that the most promising changes are still far off. Even though Blizzard admits it failed at smoothly addressing balance issues in this instance, players are having trouble believing that things will change in the future. "I'll say that my confidence in this group is extremely low, not because of the changes they are talking about, but because they were clearly very confident in this last patch and surprised by how bad it was," one Reddit commenter wrote in a thread about the stream. https://www.pcgamer.com/diablo-4-nerfs-patch-1-1-campfire-chat-livestream/

Some frogs found in South and Central America have the rare ability to turn on and off their nearly transparent appearance, researchers report Thursday in the journal Science. During the day, these nocturnal frogs sleep by hanging underneath tree leaves. Their delicate, greenish transparent forms don’t cast shadows, rendering them almost invisible to birds and other predators passing overhead or underneath. But when northern glass frogs wake up and hop around in search of insects and mates, they take on an opaque reddish-brown color. “When they’re transparent, it’s for their safety,” said Junjie Yao, a Duke University biomedical engineer and study co-author. When they’re awake, they can actively evade predators, but when they’re sleeping and most vulnerable, “they have adapted to remain hidden.” Using light and ultrasound imaging technology, the researchers discovered the secret: While asleep, the frogs concentrate, or “hide,” nearly 90% of their red blood cells in their liver. Because they have transparent skin and other tissues, it’s the blood circulating through their bodies that would otherwise give them away. The frogs also shrink and pack together most of their internal organs, Yao said. A male glass A male glass frog photographed from below using a flash, showing its transparency.Jesse Delia / American Museum of Natural History via AP The research “beautifully explains” how “glass frogs conceal blood in the liver to maintain transparency,” said Juan Manuel Guayasamin, a frog biologist at University San Francisco of Quito, Ecuador, who was not involved in the study. Exactly how they do this, and why it doesn’t kill them, remains a mystery. For most animals, having very little blood circulating oxygen for several hours would be deadly. And concentrating blood so tightly would result in fatal clotting. But somehow, the frogs survive. Further research on the species could provide useful clues for the development of anti-blood clotting medications, said Carlos Taboada, a Duke University biologist and study co-author. Only a few animals, mostly ocean dwellers, are naturally transparent, said Oxford University biologist Richard White, who was not involved in the study. “Transparency is super rare in nature, and in land animals, it’s essentially unheard of outside of the glass frog,” White said. Those that are transparent include some fish, shrimp, jellyfish, worms and insects — none of which move large quantities of red blood through their bodies. The trick of hiding blood while sleeping appears to be unique to the frogs.
  19. https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2022/12/02/2023-ktm-890-adventure-first-look-9-fast-facts-for-adv-touring/ We have already had a look at the off-road-ready 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R. Now it’s time to take the R away, and check out the numerous update to the standard 890 Adventure, which is more street-friendly. Don’t worry; it’s still an off-road capable ADV motorcycle. The 2023 KTM 890 Adventure gets new WP Apex suspension. The Apex units are almost completely adjustable—the shock’s compression damping is fixed, as is the fork spring-preload. Travel at both ends is a hair under eight inches, which should be sufficient for all but the hardest-core off-road adventurists. Off-road riders will appreciate the new aluminum skid plate. It does triple duty, protecting the lower reaches of the 5.3-gallon fuel tank, as well as the exhaust and engine cases. New Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires split the difference between dirt and pavement. The wire-spoked wheelset is a dirt-ready 21-/18-inch combo. The Bosch 9.3 MP ABS is new. When you select the Offroad ride mode, Offroad ABS (front wheel only) is engaged. Otherwise, both wheels get ABS assistance. There’s a new fairing and front fender, plus wider tank and side panels. This means better protection from the elements and easier control over the motorcycle. The seat gets softer foam. The long days in the saddle won’t seem so long. A Demo Mode lets you try out the optional electronic riders aids for 932 miles on the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure for committing to buying them. Street, Rain, and Offroad modes are standard. The Rally mode (which we liked so much in the dirt on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R) with adjustable traction control and compression braking is certainly worth a try, as is the quickshifter. Additional options include cruise control, heating for the seat and grips, an Akrapovič muffler, and panniers. While checking out the extra goodies, you’ll notice the new five-inch TFT display. The new dash features a new graphic interface and a USB charging port. Download the KTMconnect app, and it will also provide sophisticated turn-by-turn navigation. If you like to monitor phone calls, the software has enhanced that experience. The 2023 KTM 890 Adventure hits dealers’ showroom floors this month. You’ll have a choice between orange with black and white accents, and black with orange and gray accents. Check with your dealer regarding pricing. Now for the first time, a Harvard Medical School study has given an exact picture of why we tend to contract the cold in winter regardless of our body condition and general immunity levels. The study’s lead author, Dr Benjamin Bleier, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School, was quoted as saying, “We found that the drop in temperature significantly reduced the innate immune response in the nose, decreasing not only the quantity of extracellular vesicles (EVs) that swarmed the virus but their quality and strength. This reduced response makes the virus stick to and then infect the nasal cells, where they can then divide and cause the infection…. These findings offer one of the first true mechanistic, biological explanations of why people are more likely to catch colds and other viruses that cause upper respiratory infections in cooler weather.” The study, which has been published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, even shows that the mucosa doesn’t lose any of its protective ability in high heat. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nothing but tiny membrane-bound particles that can carry DNA, RNA and proteins that are released by cells to trigger an antiviral response. In the nose, these sacs can prevent viruses from binding to uninfected cells. If they themselves are weakened by cold ambient temperatures, then the virus stubbornly gets stuck to the mucosa,” says Dr Nikhil Modi, Senior Consultant, Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi. “This is the first, definitive, data-driven evidence of how the body reacts to the virus in winter. In that sense, the nose pretty much becomes the gateway for the virus. It also tells us how the nasal cavity, due to its proximity to the cold air outside, is more sensitive and loses its immunity faster than any other organ in the body,” he adds. However, Dr Modi mentions that this does not mean that we focus only on reduction in immunity that predisposes us to flu. “We are just as prone to allergens and extreme weather conditions. These are not infections but have common symptoms like nose blocks and watering of eyes. That’s why it is better to mask up when going outdoors and inhale steam regularly to decongest your airways. Second, build up your immunity with a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins and proteins, all of which are required for immune cells. In other words, up your quotient of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Exercise and build a sleep discipline allowing your body to heal and fight back. If you follow these simple basic rules, you do not need vitamin C supplements,” he adds. The researchers examined the impact of cold ambient temperatures on the antiviral immune response in the nasal cavity. They first used endoscopy to assess changes in temperature inside the nasal cavity of healthy individuals in response to cold temperatures typically observed during winter. A drop in the ambient temperature from 23.3 degrees celsius to 4.4 degrees celsius was associated with a decline in temperature inside the nasal cavity by about five degrees celsius. The researchers simulated this 5-degree celsius drop in intranasal temperatures in the laboratory by culturing human nasal mucosal cells at 32 degrees Celsius instead of 37 degrees Celsius. Lowering the temperature reduced the release of EVs.
  21. https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/china-border-quarantine-travel-reax-intl-hnk/index.html China's partial reopening has been met with an outpouring of joy and relief from citizens -- both the hundreds of millions isolated inside the country for the past three years and those overseas separated from their loved ones. Authorities announced Monday that starting January 8, China will drop quarantine requirements for all international arrivals, its most significant move yet in transitioning away from its stringent zero-Covid policy. The border remains largely closed to foreigners, apart from a limited number of business or family visits -- though the government signaled Monday this could loosen, too. For many Chinese nationals abroad, who have been unable to return or unwilling to endure the lengthy quarantine, the news meant they could finally go home -- a bittersweet victory after much sacrifice. "Finally, everybody can (live) their normal life," said one Chinese national living in New York, who hasn't been home for four years. She called the separation "very painful," saying several of her family members and the beloved pet dog she grew up with had died during that time. Her family "missed (my graduation). They missed so many things," she said. "And I also missed so many things for my family. All my friends, they got married during the pandemic. Even some of them had babies. I feel like I missed everything, I missed the most important points in their lives." May Ma, 28, has been unable to go home for nearly three years while living in South Korea. The worst thing about the quarantine requirements had been worrying about her grandparents' health, and not knowing if she'd be able to return in time to say goodbye if anything were to happen, she said. Throughout the pandemic, "the scariest thing was ... not knowing where the end is, not knowing when I can go back," she said. "I definitely feel very happy, I can finally see the end." Those within China are also celebrating and anticipating outbound travel. Most have not left the country for several years and are now flooding booking sites to plan long-awaited vacations. Online searches for outbound flights and overseas hotels jumped to a three-year peak on Trip.com, a Chinese travel booking website, according to company data. Searches for po[CENSORED]r destinations increased tenfold within half an hour of the announcement, with many people searching for outbound group tours during the Lunar New Year holiday season in late January, data shows. Macao, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom were among the website's top 10 destinations with the fastest growth in search volume since the announcement. But the border relaxations have sparked concern among some as China fights its most severe wave of Covid infections since the pandemic began. Cases have skyrocketed since China abandoned zero-Covid, with empty streets and packed hospital wards. When CNN visited a Beijing crematorium last week, cars lined up to enter, filled with grieving family members who had been waiting more than a day to cremate loved ones who died of Covid. Last Friday, Bloomberg News and the Financial Times reported that almost 250 million people in China may have caught Covid in the first 20 days of December, a figure presented during an internal meeting of China's National Health Commission, according to both outlets. They cited sources familiar with the matter or involved in the discussions. If correct, the estimate -- which CNN cannot independently confirm -- would account for roughly 18% of China's 1.4 billion people and represent the largest Covid-19 outbreak to date globally. "I feel like right now, it's totally a mess," said the Chinese national in New York. "Everybody is sick. So, at least I think right now, it's not the best time to visit my family. Maybe two or three months later." Related content Leaked notes from Chinese health officials estimate 250 million Covid-19 infections in December: reports Some overseas destinations are also on guard. Officials in Italy's northern Lombardy region have asked Milan's Malpensa airport -- one of the country's largest international airports -- to conduct PCR tests for all arrivals from China from now until the end of January. India, which borders China, has ordered travelers from China and several other countries to show proof of a negative Covid test on arrival. And Japan announced Friday that travelers from mainland China, or who had been in China within a week, would be tested for Covid upon entry. In both India and Japan, those found positive upon arrival will be required to quarantine. But for many Chinese nationals, hungry for travel and reunion, the overwhelming emotion remains relief. "It doesn't matter if I can get back in time for Spring Festival," said Ma in South Korea, referring to Lunar New Year. "There is hope after all, I can bear waiting for a little while longer."

  23. https://www.techradar.com/news/xbox-live-gold-free-games Xbox Games With Gold grants free games each month those who subscribe. These games tend to vary massively, with some being smaller indie titles, and other more well-known experiences. It's always worth checking to see what the free games are each month, as they can be downloaded and saved for later. Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can claim two games a month, ranging from AAA blockbusters to beloved indie titles. Unlike Sony's PlayStation Plus free games, Games with Gold takes a staggered approach. Microsoft typically adds its free games for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One to the service throughout the month, with one available from the beginning of the new month to the end, and the other becoming available about halfway through the current month and then running into the following month.
  24. https://www.pcgamer.com/amazons-adding-shorts-and-tights-to-a-new-lost-ark-class-to-dial-down-the-lewdness/ Isometric fantasy fashion parade Lost Ark is one of those games that's at slightly different points in different regions. The Korean version runs ahead of the western one, essentially, meaning that players of the Amazon Games published version over here usually have some idea of what they're getting: and one of the most anticipated additions has been the addition of a new class, the Artist The Artist is a young woman who, in the Korean version, favors extremely short skirts. And it appears that Amazon considers some of the Artist's Korean skins to be, well, just a bit too thirsty. "Nothing gameplay-related will change for the Artist Class, but some skins will be modified to better fit Western norms", reads the official announcement. "Specifically, skins with short skirts will have shorts added underneath the skirt, and other skins will have adjusted pant lengths or tights added." This class itself summons monsters by painting them, though I think they can also just whack monsters with their brush. The Artist is a support-leaning playstyle with damage on the low side but a whole bunch of ways to buff and heal the party, and the developers say it's the first of a new class category called specialists, with another example to arrive later in the year. February will see the one-year anniversary of the game's launch in the west, and is going to be celebrated with a series of quests set on the continent of Rowen. After completing these questlines players can choose a faction to compete in open-world PvP and the war over the continent begins, leading up to a new type of PvP activity being added in March. This is a 96-player (48vs48) battle with bases to capture and secondary objectives, which are held at certain times during the week. April and the Artist is as far as this 2023 roadmap goes, which doesn't quite seem to fulfil the brief but there we are. The Witcher's Kaer Morhen background art is pretty sweet, and in the runup to the collab Lost Ark players are getting the Summoner class and endgame Brelshaza legion raid, among many other goodies. As for Geralt, the man belongs in a tub but he's bloody everywhere these days. The Witcher crossovers include Monster Hunter World, Soulcalibur 6, and soon enough he'll be turning up in Fortnite Chapter 4.
