The Nexus 4 was a groundbreaking phone – a near flagship for $300. Okay, it did have its quirks, e.g. no LTE support (though that wasn’t as important back in 2012), storage was limited too. Instead of focusing on just one phone we wanted to look at the trends in Google’s phone line-up. We mentioned the price of the Nexus 4 and we’ll see what happened to the “flagship killer” status of the series. This series is all about exploring a well recognized trait of a particular brand or series – and we think that software support is one of the defining features of the Nexus and Pixel phones. The Nexus phones were affordable at first, especially if you waited a few months. The Nexus 4 dropped as low as $200 at one point. The Nexus 5 got price cuts as well. Then came the Nexus 6 – its $650 price tag made many fans unhappy. It was still an excellent phone and it influenced Google’s approach to handsets. The following year in 2015 the Nexus line was split into two models that we’ll call “base” and “pro” for consistency. That was also the last of the Nexus line, Google started fresh with the Pixel phones. Those gradually increased in cost over the years, peaking in 2018 and 2019 with the Pixel 3 and 4 at $800 and Pixel 3 XL and 4 XL at $900. After that Google changed course and lately the price of the small model has been falling, going down to $600 with the Pixel 6. The Pixel 6 Pro is still $900, though. Interestingly, the increased prices didn’t hurt the performance of the Pixel phones on the market. The opposite, in fact, as Google’s 2019 shipments surpassed previous years by quite a margin. Note that the image below shows cumulative shipments of all Pixel phones, but it clearly looked like Google is on the right path. The company allegedly had big plans for the Pixel 6 series too, planing to produce 7 million, more than any other series. However, Google isn’t one to talk about sales, so we don’t actually know how well the 6-series did (we’ll have to wait for analysts to figure that out). We will get back to pricing in a moment as we haven’t covered the “Pixel a” series whose main goal is to offer a Google phone on the cheap. How much would you pay for that fabled Google software support? Actually, how good is that support? We tried to convey that through a chart. The red line shows the period in years during which a generation of phones received OS updates (including minor ones). The blue line is for the period during which security patches were issued. On average, Google offers 3 years of OS updates. The Nexus 6 stands out, but that was actually an old update that arrived late – early on Android 7.1.1 was breaking Android Pay and it took Google a while to find a fix (meanwhile users were downgraded to 7.0). The Pixel 3 generation also stands out – it got 4 years security patches instead of 3 years as originally planned. In fact, the last update for the two 2018 phones rolled out at the end of June this year (Android 12 arrived last year). Note that the Pixel 4, 5 and 6 series currently run Android 12. The Pixel 4 and 4 XL will receive their last guaranteed OS update in October of this year. By the looks of it, that will be just long enough to get Android 13 installed. Starting with the Pixel 6 generation, Google changed up the strategy a bit. It still promises only 3 years of OS update (competitors like Apple and Samsung offer more), but it committed to 5 years of security patches. According to the Help center, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will get their last guaranteed OS update in October 2024 and the last guaranteed security patch in October 2026. “Guaranteed” since, as you saw with the Pixel 3, there are some exceptions.

The Stray release date is fast approaching, and concern has been growing among those hoping to play the indie feline adventure on the Steam Deck. Thankfully, Valve has recently updated the game’s Steam store page, and it appears that it should run purrfectly on the handheld gaming PC. Stray joins the now over 1,800 games to earn the coveted Steam Deck Verified compatibility rating, meaning that it should be entirely playable using the device’s built-in controls and display with no inconvenient quirks. Running it on the portable powerhouse should be a breeze too, if the Stray system requirements are any indication. Publisher Annapurna Interactive is understandably delighted at this news, celebrating via a short tweet. This news should also greatly please many of those lucky enough to have received a Steam Deck, which should only continue to grow following Valve’s commitment to doubling up on shipments of its handheld gaming PC. While Stray’s Steam Deck Verified status is undoubtedly worth celebrating, it’s shaping up to be something of a surprise hit on the PC in general. It’s recently overtaken The Day Before as the most wishlisted Steam game, indicating that there are plenty of gamers out there that can’t wait to get their paws on it.

5minlab is back with a monthly Smash Legends update. Every month, the developers release an update for the real-time PvP action game which typically contains a new legend and gameplay modes. July follows the same template with the 28th legend being added to Smash Legends alongside the start of the Summer Festival Event and Duo Touchdown Mode. The latest character who is part of Smash Legends’ July update is the small but strong Thumbelina – Maya. The 28th hero, Maya, is a Vanguard Legend who utilizes a massive robot for her offensive moves. It can charge into enemies and hit them hard, but it is also extremely mobile as it is capable of leaping as well. She is part of the Smash Pass and players can unlock her once they reach stage ten. Summer Festival Event Smash Legends is celebrating the summer season with a festival that will go on for a month, until August 8th. Everything will be redesigned to fit the theme with a new background and soundtrack. Players will be able to use summer-themed items like water balloons, tropical juice and ice cream and they’ll unlock limited-edition skins and rewards too. Expect to see new in-game effects to fit the mood as well. Duo Touchdown Mode This isn’t a brand new mode and has been part of Smash Legend’s Arena Lab. But with this update, the Duo Touchdown Mode makes a shift and is now an official mode. In case you haven’t tried it yet, it is a 2v2 mode which requires teams to escort a target to the destination. Whoever gets there first is crowned the winner. Legends saw some balancing changes as well.

NASA said Friday the first cosmic images from the James Webb Space Telescope will include unprecedented views of distant galaxies, bright nebulae, and a faraway giant gas planet. The US, European, and Canadian space agencies are gearing up for a big reveal on July 12 of early observations by the $10 billion (roughly Rs. 79,330 crore) observatory, the successor to Hubble that is set to reveal new insights into the origins of the universe. "I'm looking very much forward to not having to keep these secrets anymore, that will be a great relief," Klaus Pontoppidan, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSI) that oversees Webb, told AFP last week. An international committee decided the first wave of full-color scientific images would include the Carina Nebula, an enormous cloud of dust and gas 7,600 light years away, as well as the Southern Ring Nebula, which surrounds a dying star 2,000 light years away. Carina Nebula is famous for its towering pillars that include "Mystic Mountain," a three-light-year-tall cosmic pinnacle captured in an iconic image by Hubble. Webb has also carried out a spectroscopy - an analysis of light that reveals detailed information -- on a faraway gas giant called WASP-96 b, which was discovered in 2014. Nearly 1,150 light-years from Earth, WASP-96 b is about half the mass of Jupiter and zips around its star in just 3.4 days. Next comes Stephan's Quintet, a compact galaxy 290 million light years away. Four of the five galaxies within the quintet are "locked in a cosmic dance of repeated close encounters," NASA said. Finally, and perhaps most enticing of all, Webb has gathered an image using foreground galaxy clusters called SMACS 0723 as a kind of cosmic magnifying glass for the extremely distant and faint galaxies behind it. This is known as "gravitational lensing" and uses the mass of foreground galaxies to bend the light of objects behind them, much like a pair of glasses. Dan Coe, an astronomer at STSI, told AFP on Friday that even in its first images, the telescope had broken scientific ground. "When I first saw the images... of this deep field of this galaxy cluster lensing, I looked at the images, and I suddenly learned three things about the universe that I didn't know before," he said. "It's totally blown my mind." Webb's infrared capabilities allow it to see deeper back in time to the Big Bang, which happened 13.8 billion years ago, than any instrument before it. because the universe is expanding, light from the earliest stars shifts from the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths it was emitted in, to longer infrared wavelengths -- which webb is equipped to detect at an unprecedented resolution.

Volkswagen Group’s software unit Cariad believes one of the ways the automaker can monetize future software developments is by offering customers pay-as-you-go autonomous driving technology. “There is a new business model already out there -- a subscription model, or function-on-demand -- where you can drive autonomously if you want, for the next 50 miles. We would support that, “ Cariad CEO Dirk Hilgenberg told Bloomberg in an interview. Although VW does not yet offer either Level 4 or Level 5 self-driving options, Hilgenberg said it was possible to see that the service would allow the automaker the opportunity to offer other services to consumers who are freed from driving the vehicle. “You have to make sure to have what we call a digital services platform that lets the outside world in -- Google, Apple, Amazon -- where you can bring your accounts to stream and be entertained, or where you can work with office products, do a videoconference or prepare yourself for the next meeting. This is the product we want to sell. The product is our platforms,” he said. Volvo Cars said in January its "unsupervised autonomous driving" solution, called Ride Pilot, will be available as an add-on subscription on the automaker's forthcoming full-electric flagship SUV that will go into production later this year. Henrik Green, Volvo's head of advanced technology, said the automaker is still debating what to charge for Ride Pilot, which the company anticipates it will be very po[CENSORED]r once it is more widely available.

A Miami-based CEO has been arrested for allegedly importing $1 billion worth of counterfeit Cisco equipment from China and then selling it on Amazon and eBay. The Justice Department announced(Opens in a new window) today that it had indicted 38-year-old Onur “Ron” Aksoy for selling the counterfeit Cisco gear via numerous online storefronts. Allegedly, Aksoy imported tens of thousands of fraudulent Cisco devices from China and Hong Kong. He then created at least 19 companies in New Jersey and Florida, dubbed the “Pro Network,” to help him resell the hardware as genuine through the e-commerce sites. One of the sites Aksoy seems to be using to sell the Cisco gear. “The operation allegedly generated over $100 million in revenue, and Aksoy received millions of dollars for his personal gain,” the Justice Department said. The Cisco equipment Aksoy allegedly sold was usually older, lower-end models that were previously bought or discarded. Counterfeiters in China then modified the equipment, making the devices appear as if they were newer or more expensive Cisco product models. “As alleged, the Chinese counterfeiters often added pirated Cisco software and unauthorized, low-quality, or unreliable components—including components to circumvent technological measures added by Cisco to the software to check for software license compliance and to authenticate the hardware,” the Justice Department said. In addition, the counterfeit products were packaged with authentic-looking labels, boxes, and documentation. However, customers who bought the equipment would later realize the products were defective. “Often, they would simply fail or otherwise malfunction, causing significant damage to their users’ networks and operations—in some cases, costing users tens of thousands of dollars,” the Justice Department said. “Customers of Aksoy’s fraudulent and counterfeit devices included hospitals, schools, government agencies, and the military.” According to the US’s criminal complaint(Opens in a new window), Aksoy dates back to at least 2013. He was able to buy the counterfeit equipment at “95 to 98%” lower than the prices of genuine Cisco products. The counterfeiting generated numerous complaints from buyers on Amazon and eBay. In response, Amazon and eBay suspended(Opens in a new window) or terminated the storefronts on their sites. But Aksoy repeatedly returned to the e-commerce platforms, creating new storefronts under different names between 2014 and 2020. At the same time, US Customs and Border Protection seized about 180 shipments the Chinese counterfeiters tried to send to Aksoy over the past nine years. In July 2021, US agents also executed a search warrant and raided an Aksoy-operated warehouse, seizing 1,156 counterfeit Cisco devices with a retail value of over $7 million. To evade investigation, Aksoy would sometimes use the alias Dave Durden. But last week, federal investigators arrested Aksoy in Miami on several fraud-related counts. As evidence, the criminal complaint against him cites numerous emails and messages Aksoy and his associates sent to counterfeit suppliers in China. The Justice Department cataloged(Opens in a new window) the various storefronts Aksoy used on Amazon, eBay, and on his own websites to sell the goods. But at the moment, it remains unclear if victims will receive any restitution. Aksoy's company Pro Network did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a statement, Cisco said: "We are committed to maintaining the integrity and quality of Cisco products and services. Cisco is grateful to law enforcement and customs officials for their tremendous collaboration in this investigation and to the DOJ for bringing the perpetrator to justice."

Yes, there are Skull and Bones pets, Ubisoft confirms to PCGamesN, including pirate cats and lemurs, which are part of ship customization. Are scurvy dogs next? The big re-reveal of Ubisoft’s open-sea pirate game confirms many new features, including that it’s basically Sea of Thieves meets Raft, but PCGamesN can confirm the best yet – Skull and Bones pets, included in ship customisation, such as adorable pirate kitty cats. Players can change a lot of things about their Skull and Bones ship, from practical stuff like weapons and cargo capacity to cosmetic items like furniture and cooler mastheads. Those paying attention to the Skull and Bones gameplay reveal may have noticed an adorable lemur accompanying the player character as they steer the ship, too. There was also a cat, too. These both looked an awful lot like pets to us, so PCGamesN reached out to Ubisoft – which confirms that yes, Skull and Bones will indeed have pirate pets, including lemurs, cats, and more to be revealed at a later date. “Pets are indeed part of the customisation options,” an Ubisoft representative told PCGamesN. “Cats will also be available – as for the rest, it’s going to be a surprise!” It seems likely that (scurvy) dogs would follow cats, and we’d be astonished if there weren’t several bird species available – such as the iconic parrots, of course. If there are lemurs, monkeys seem likely too, although whether they’ll be undead like in Pirates of the Caribbean is another matter. We’ll have to wait and see.

Riot Games has just revealed a treasure trove of upcoming content coming for League of Legends: Wild Rift as patch 3.3 launches later this month. Titled Shining Bright, the update introduces three new champions, new items, the Wild Pass, and more to the MOBA. Champions Patch 3.3 will bring three champions to Wild Rift. First up is Kassadin, the Void Walker from the Icathia wastelands, followed by the Desert Rose, Samira from the Dragon Lane and finally Sion, the Undead Juggernaut from the Baron Lane. These three will be formidable additions to any team with a good mix of both melee and ranged moves. Items Enchantments get a refresh with the new active item swapping feature that costs only a bit of gold but saves players from selling their boots. Additionally, a few new enchantments are coming as well. The Repulsor Enchant knocks back opponents while the Magnetron Enchant allows players to zoom to their allies while taunting the enemy. The Quicksilver and Gargoyle Enchants are being revamped as well with the former giving some crowd control immunity and the latter granting a shield for a short duration. With this, Shining Bright sees the removal of the Shadows Enchant. Ranked Mode The upcoming update will see the addition of the Legendary Ranked mode that follows a solo, point-based system. Those above Diamon ranking will unlock this and can advance through six tiers. Extra rewards for this mode include exclusive goodies and an extra skin augment. Do note that the queues for these matches will only be available in specific slots.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it has planned a new slate of projects in collaboration with the Duffer Brothers who have been responsible for the amazing run of Stranger Things. The duo have already set their sights on a Stranger Things spin-off series along with a "new stage play set within the world and mythology" of the show. The announcement also mentions the Duffer Brothers plan to take on a new live-action TV adaptation of the revered manga and anime series Death Note. Netflix made an official announcement on Wednesday revealing that the Duffer Brothers have set up a new production company called Upside Down Pictures. It is under this banner that Netflix and Duffer brothers will work on an expanded slate of projects, including a Stranger Things spin-off and play. After wrapping up the fourth season of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers' first task would be to pen down the fifth and final season. Following this, it appears that the live-action Death Note adaptation is at the top of their list. Death Note is a manga and anime series originally written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata that has gained the status of a cult classic over the years. The original series explores the journey of a seemingly normal yet genius teenager who is given a Death Note, a mystical and powerful notebook, that grants him supernatural power over the fate of other humans. In 2017, Netflix released a live-action Death Note feature film that was not well received by fans and critics alike. Still, a sequel was said to be in development in 2018 with Greg Russo as the writer. However, there have been no substantial updates on this project. Now, this new Death Note TV adaptation by Duffer Brothers will be completely independent of the previous live-action movie. However, Netflix did not delve into details and has kept the probable release date under wraps.

Sony has today pushed out a new system software update for PlayStation 5 consoles. Since the PS5 launched at the end of 2020, the platform has received some routine patches to help improve various aspects of the next-gen hardware. And while some of these updates have been huge and others have been almost pointless, today's patch for the PS5 falls somewhere in the middle. As of now, PS5 owners around the globe can download the latest system update for the console. For the most part, this patch looks to expand the options available when it comes to ALLM (auto low latency mode). In short, ALLM allows your console to tell you your TV to switch to a dedicated "game mode" when playing games. This makes the overall gaming experience that much better and ensures that you're not seeing any lag or other various interruptions while playing. The big caveat with this new PS5 system update is that it could very well have no impact on your own experience. Since ALLM support varies from TV to TV, there's a chance that your own television might not contain the option whatsoever. This is something that we've also seen in the past with the dedicated VRR patch for PS5 that rolled out earlier this year. Essentially, Sony is now adding expanded features to the PS5 that those with newer TVs will no doubt appreciate. However, if you're someone who still happens to be playing on a display that is a bit old, then today's patch and some others that we've seen in recent months aren't much to write home about. If you'd like to find the full patch notes for today's new PS5 system update, you can check them out down below. •~• If you're using a TV that supports ALLM (auto low latency mode), you can adjust ALLM settings in [Settings] > [Screen and Video] > (Video Output] > [ALLM]. •~•If you select [Automatic], your TV will automatically switch to low-latency mode while playing games. •~•If you select [Off], ALLM won't be enabled, except during VRR (variable refresh rate) output. This system software update improves system performance.

Nintendo is continuing to hype up the release of Splatoon 3 by creating a Splatoon edition of the Switch OLED that will be released on Aug. 26, the company announced today. The Splatoon franchise has quickly grown into one of the most po[CENSORED]r in Nintendo’s lineup, keeping up with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and Mario Kart 8. Splatoon 3 was first announced during the Nintendo Direct that occurred in February 2021 and now has a release date of Sept. 9 over a year later. Like with other highly-anticipated releases, Nintendo is taking things one step further by releasing another special edition of the Switch console. This time, the new edition will be on the Switch OLED, Nintendo’s polished version of the original Switch that was released in October 2021. Splatoon-3 The new Switch OLED comes with two new joy-cons with gradients, each with purple and pink on the first and green and yellow on the other. These brightly colored joy-cons stand out much more than the OLED’s usual white ones and only add to the character of this Splatoon 3 edition. Each joy-con comes with a translucent decal full of paint splashes and characters from the game. This design continues on the back of the Switch itself, with more translucent decals that extend to the back of the joy-cons themselves. The Switch OLED’s white docking station has also got fun decals added to the front and bright green paint splatter in the lower right corner. For those who may not be able to afford a new Switch OLED, Nintendo has given them additional options to get in on the Splatoon 3 collaboration. A Switch Pro Controller and Switch OLED carrying cases with the same coloring and decals will be available starting Sept. 9 alongside the game’s release.

The first post-launch Diablo Immortal update is here, bringing with it a new Helliquary boss and a whole new battle pass. The new Diablo Immortal battle pass goes live July 7 at 3 a.m. server time and features several new reward tracks, including a free track and two paid ones. The MMO game’s first paid battle pass track, dubbed “Empowered,” includes all free rank rewards, an exclusive Empowered reward track, and two new cosmetics – Bloodsworn Weapon, unlocked at rank one, and Bloodsworn Amor at rank 40. Then there’s the Collector’s Empowered Pass, which gives you everything from the Empowered pass, along with a Bloodsworn Avatar Frame, Portal Cosmetic, and an automatic 10-rank boost. Also included in Blizzard’s overview of the first major update is Vitaath, though technically she showed up in the previous week before the update dropped. Good luck if you try challenging Vitaath, though. Her recommended combat rating is a staggering 2,000. If you’re hoping to challenge Vitaath at higher difficulty levels, you’ll need a combat rating of roughly 3,500. The new update is adding Diablo Immortal’s first timed event as well, the Hungering Moon Weekend Event. From July 15 through July 18, players can complete challenges to earn Moonslivers and trade them for Blessings. Gathering seven Blessings lets you trade them in for a random reward, and Blizzard teased the moon may reward you with its favor – whatever that means. Then there’s the usual bug fixes and balance changes you expect with live service patches, but that’s about it for the first Diablo Immortal update. Blizzard emphasized once again that you can expect several more in the coming months, each adding new Helliquary bosses, events, and more. “It’s our intention for Diablo Immortal to be a game that you can forge friendships over while felling adversaries together and enjoy playing for many years to come,” Blizzard said in the update. If you’re planning to tackle Vitaath, check out our best Diablo Immortal builds and Diablo Immortal set items to make sure you’re ready for the battle. https://www.pcgamesn.com/diablo-immortal/update-new-content

https://www.linkpicture.com/q/4XhuwFvowVTWZ8DN8N38n4-1024-80.jpg.webp System76, the Colorado-based Linux laptop, desktop, and server specialist, has announced(opens in new tab) a new highly portable laptop with an Intel Alder Lake processor inside. The new Lemur Pro(opens in new tab) is a "lighter than Air" 14-inch form factor laptop with excellent battery life and attractions such as open firmware (powered by Coreboot) and a 180-degree hinge. In addition, buyers can choose to go with Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS pre-installed. The new Lemur Pro has many attractive modern features you might see advertised in many rival mainstream thin and light designs. However, the special sauce here is the "System76 Open Firmware with Coreboot." Coreboot, known initially as LinuxBIOS, is significant as it is an open-source BIOS implementation embraced by Linux users. It is lightweight, flexible, and feature-rich. Sadly, not many modern laptops or desktop PCs support Coreboot, but it seems to have gained momentum in recent times. We reported on Coreboot being made available for MSI Z690-A WiFi motherboards in April. More recently, in a demonstration of Coreboot's flexibility for tinkerers, we reported on a port of Doom being released as a Coreboot payload. Many users will want to plug this portable 14-incher into a large screen when they get the opportunity, and System76 has designed the Lemur Pro with monitor-based docking in mind. It envisions users connecting to a big screen using the USB-C connection to benefit from the more expansive workspace and laptop charging. Like Windows, Linux had to have some serious tinkering under the hood to prepare for the mix of Performance and Efficiency cores in Alder Lake chips. However, rest assured, efficient hybrid scheduling is taken care of with the two OS options that can be pre-installed on the Lemur Pro. Spec System76 Lemur Pro System76 allows customers to configure and buy Lemur Pro laptops right now. There are many RAM and storage configurations to pick through, and you can add external keyboards and monitors to the bundle. The entry price with an Intel Core i5-1235U, 8GB RAM, 240GB of storage, and no extras is $1,149.
