Everyone boasts of surpassing Tesla these days, but a story that went under the radar shows that big car companies face insurmountable problems catching up. Volkswagen Group had to delay the launch of crucial electric models at Audi, Porsche, and Bentley because software subsidiary Cariad was unable to complete the software. As software gets more prominence in the automotive industry, legacy carmakers find themselves unfit to compete in an industry increasingly dominated by Silicon Valley tech companies. This was exacerbated by the rapid switch to electrification, as cars essentially became computers on wheels rather than machines with a brain. New contenders in the auto industry like Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, and others all have a software-centric approach to building cars. In the meantime, traditional carmakers have yet to grasp the revelation that the hardware means nothing without the underlying software. At the Volkswagen Group, this revelation means delaying new key EV models by at least three years because of problems at the company’s software arm Cariad. According to an Automobilwoche report, Audi’s new flagship, developed under the Artemis project, will not launch until at least 2027. The Artemis project was supposed to launch in 2024 with the new 2.0 software generation capable of hands-off Level 4 autonomous driving. But because Cariad is far behind in developing automated driving software for the car, the whole project is now in jeopardy. The first production Artemis car, internally called Landjet, will now launch after Volkswagen’s Trinity flagship sedan, which is scheduled for 2026. This means late 2026 but more likely in 2027, according to sources. This has led Audi to rethink its strategy and come up with a plan to build a slimmed-down electric flagship, codenamed Landyacht, from 2025. This would lack advanced autonomous driving technology and instead will be powered by a souped-up 1.2 version of the current software. Even this one is way behind schedule, as it was expected to launch in 2021 to power the current EV crop. Not only the future flagships are impacted. Audi Q6 e-tron and its sister Porsche Macan EV are also threatened by delays. As for Bentley’s plan to sell only battery-powered cars by 2030, everybody is skeptical. Audi is ready with the pre-series production of the Q6 e-tron but will have to postpone the series production until September 2023. Porsche is even further ahead with the Macan EV production. “The hardware is great,” a Porsche source told Automobilwoche, according to Automotive News. “But the software is still missing.” You can read the frustration between the lines.

World of Warcraft Dragonflight system requirements are slightly more demanding than the base MMORPG, so you’ll want to sure your gaming PC is ready for the new expansion. While Blizzard says the game will attempt to run on systems that sit below the minimum specifications, the developer warns that the “experience may be significantly diminished.” According to the new World of Warcraft Dragonflight system requirements, you’ll need a DirectX 12 capable graphics card with at least 3GB VRAM to run the MMO expansion. To experience the new WoW content at its best, Blizzard recommends playing the game using either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX or AMD RDNA 2 GPU – a significant jump compared to previous GTX 1080 suggestions. Blizzard also lists Intel Arc 7 among its recommended GPUs, but the blue team’s graphics cards are still exclusive to China. WoW Dragonflight is also ravenous for gaming RAM, as you’ll need at least 8GB to get going. That figure doubles to 16GB if you’re sticking with Blizzard’s recommended specs, so you might need to consider an upgrade if you’re rocking an older rig. Dallmeier, a manufacturer of video security technology, announces that its open software platform HEMISPHERE® will support the RFID-based ‘Art Protection’ system from Fortecho Solutions, the preeminent provider of secure conservation technology. Museums, galleries, and private clients can thus manage their alarms conveniently via a 3D map and check on incidents in a matter of seconds with the aid of video cameras. The many other advantages also include convenient ‘3-click search’ and a comprehensive understanding of the security situation. Intelligent VMS integrations Nowadays, many gallery and museum operators use RFID-based tracking solutions to protect their works of art from being touched, stolen, or otherwise exposed to unwanted environmental influences. Autonomous systems lack the oversight made possible by intelligent VMS integrations. This is exactly where the joint solution from Dallmeier and the British IoT security provider Fortecho comes into its own. Fortecho’s own suite of powerful active RFID tags gather data at object level and transmit this via encrypted RFID signal to Fortecho’s bespoke enterprise software Aspect Arts®. Based on predefined rules and custom set parameters, the software evaluates the information and, if appropriate, triggers alarms. Movement, tamper, proximity, attack, temperature, relative humidity, and lux all present as unique customisable alerts in Fortecho’s enterprise software. Relevant viewing angles The smart integration with the Dallmeier HEMISPHERE® software links the RFID tag alarm messages to the relevant viewing angles of the cameras. If a RFID tag registers an incident the Dallmeier HEMISPHERE® software processes the alarm with the aid of the open message broker ‘Apache ActiveMQ,’ and the user sees the camera location in question light up on a 2D or 3D map of his environment – in a colour defined according to the priority of the alarm. At the same time, all events are listed in the ‘Alarm Inbox’ together with all associated information, such as the name and image of the work of art in question, to enable them to be assigned unmistakably. Perfect user experience The alarm can also be forwarded to other users or comments can be added to it Users can verify the alarm with just one mouse click – for example by switching to the live feed or viewing a playback loop which begins five seconds before the alarm is triggered and ends five seconds thereafter. The alarm can also be forwarded to other users or comments can be added to it. “By integrating the Fortecho RFID tracking solution in the Dallmeier software completely, we can offer our customers the perfect user experience. With the intuitive HEMISPHERE® user interface, security personnel at museums and other facilities can verify alarms from RFID tags on artworks visually in just a few moments,“ explains Celso Prieto, Head Engineer, Fortecho Solutions.

Nvidia has rolled out a hotfix for its GeForce 516.59 driver, and it resolves performance woes in FPS games like Apex Legends, Halo Infinite, Overwatch, and Destiny 2. The patch resolves a host of issues that arrived with its latest graphics card software, including freezing, crashing, and stability woes. The latest Nvidia Geforce Game Read driver arrived on June 28, adding optimisation for games like F1 2022 and Moster Hunter Rise. Unfortunately, it also caused a ruckus with longstanding favourites, rendering a few games unplayable. If you were struggling to start a match in Overwatch, the green team’s update was likely to blame, and it even hindered the abilities of DLSS in the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2. The Nvidia 516.79 hotfix driver resolves the following issues: ~Apex Legends – Improves gameplay stability [3661210] ~Overwatch – Game may freeze on launching a match [3696921] ~Dungeons 3 – Game will crash on startup [3691274] ~Red Dead Redemption 2 Performance improvement when using DLSS is lower compared to previous drivers [3700239] ~Destiny 2 Game may randomly freeze after launching game or during gameplay. [3685638] ~Halo Infinite Increased stability during gameplay [3603261] To fetch the hotfix manually, head over to Nvidia’s drivers page. If you’ve got GeForce Experience installed on your gaming PC or laptop, the update might already be waiting to download, and you’ll want to make sure your GPU is up-to-date if you haven’t done so in a while.

The Immortal Empires release date has finally been set. Total War: Warhammer 3’s massive combined sandbox campaign, which throws together the factions included in all three Total Warhammer strategy games, will arrive in beta August 23. Creative Assembly’s Total Warhammer team revealed the release date in a video response to its Reddit AMA session, waiting until the very end of the video to make the announcement. The video provides some new details about what to expect with Immortal Empires – the Empire and Vampire Counts, for example, have gotten slight reworks to their tech trees, and the rest of the older games’ factions have all gotten a “lick of paint” as well. Creative Assembly says not to expect a “full rework” for these factions, such as the one the Beastmen got, but that effort has been made to bring everyone up to fighting shape and the modern standards of Warhammer 3. Eagle-eyed viewers may also have spotted some of the upcoming DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3 in some of the presentation’s B-roll footage – you can check that out on Twitter if you don’t mind being potentially spoiled.

Tesla on Thursday asked a US court to dismiss a lawsuit claiming the electric car maker violated federal law by laying off hundreds of workers without advance notice. Tesla in a filing in federal court in Austin, Texas, where the company is based, said the workers who were terminated signed valid agreements to bring employment-related legal disputes in arbitration and to refrain from participating in class-action lawsuits. Even if the case remained in court, it should be dismissed because the company was merely "right-sizing" by firing poorly performing workers and not engaging in layoffs that require advance notice, Tesla said. Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires businesses to notify workers of mass layoffs at least 60 days in advance unless they are caused by natural disasters or "unforeseeable business circumstances." The lawsuit filed in June by two former Tesla employees accuses the company of violating the law by abruptly laying off more than 500 workers at its Sparks, Nevada gigafactory as part of a nationwide purge of its workforce. The plaintiffs are seeking class action status for all former Tesla employees throughout the United States who were laid off in May or June without notice. Last week, the plaintiffs moved to stop Tesla from allegedly asking workers to sign severance agreements waiving their ability to sue the company in exchange for one or two weeks' pay. The company in Thursday's filing said it routinely asks terminated workers to sign waivers, and that the agreements are proper because no worker was asked to sign one after the lawsuit was filed. Some courts have found that waivers signed by workers while a lawsuit is pending are invalid.

A computer vulnerability discovered last year in a ubiquitous piece of software is an “endemic” problem that will pose security risks for potentially a decade or more, according to a new cybersecurity panel created by President Joe Biden. The Cyber Safety Review Board said in a report Thursday that while there hasn’t been sign of any major cyberattack due to the Log4j flaw, it will still “be exploited for years to come.” “Log4j is one of the most serious software vulnerabilities in history,” the board’s chairman, Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary Rob Silvers, told reporters Wednesday. The Log4j flaw, made public late last year, lets internet-based attackers easily seize control of everything from industrial control systems to web servers and consumer electronics. The first obvious signs of the flaw’s exploitation appeared in Minecraft, a hugely po[CENSORED]r online game owned by Microsoft. The flaw’s discovery prompted urgent warnings by government officials and massive efforts by cybersecurity professionals to patch vulnerable systems. The board said Thursday that “somewhat surprisingly” the exploitation of the Log4j bug had occurred at lower levels than experts predicted. The board also said that it was unaware of any “significant” Log4j attacks on critical infrastructure systems but noted that some cyberattacks go unreported. The board said future attacks are likely in large part because Log4j is routinely embedded with other software and can be hard for organizations to find running in their systems. “This event is not over,” Silvers said. Log4j, written in the Java programming language, logs user activity on computers. Developed and maintained by a handful of volunteers under the auspices of the open-source Apache Software Foundation, it is extremely po[CENSORED]r with commercial software developers. A security researcher at the Chinese tech giant Alibaba notified the foundation on Nov. 24. It took two weeks to develop and release a fix. Chinese media reported that the government punished Alibaba for not reporting the flaw earlier to state officials. The board said Thursday it found “troubling elements” with the Chinese government’s policy toward vulnerability disclosures, saying it could give Chinese state hackers an early look at computer flaws they could use for nefarious means like stealing trade secrets or spying on dissidents. The Chinese government has long denied wrongdoing in cyberspace and told the board that it encourages improved information sharing on software vulnerabilities. The board offered a number of recommendations on mitigating the fallout of the Log4j flaw as well as improving cybersecurity generally. That includes the suggestion that universities and community colleges make cybersecurity training a required part of computer science degree and certification programs. The Cyber Safety Review Board is modeled after the National Transportation Safety Board, which reviews plane crashes and other major accidents, and was mandated by an executive order Biden signed last May. The 15-member board is made up of FBI, National Security Agency and other government officials as well as people from the private sector. Some supporters of the new board criticized DHS for taking so long to get it up and running. Biden’s executive order directed the board to conduct its first review on the massive Russian cyber espionage campaign known as SolarWinds. Russian hackers were able to breach several federal agencies, including accounts belonging to top cybersecurity officials at DHS, though the full fallout from that campaign is still unclear. Silvers said DHS and the White House agreed that reviewing the Log4j flaw was a better use of the new board’s expertise and time.

Intel Raptor Lake CPUs are due to launch later this year, hopefully providing a solid performance boost over their 12th Gen counterparts. However, it appears that these new processors may be more expensive than the company’s current best gaming CPUs were on release. A report in Nikkei Asia (via Tom’s Hardware) claims that Intel will raise the prices of its components across the board later this year, which could affect its upcoming Raptor Lake processors. These increases are set to fall in Q4 of 2022, but no one can be sure how it’ll impact the pricing of individual SKUs. According to Nikkei Asia, Intel cites “inflationary pressures” as the reason behind its impending price hikes, and the company has now begun to inform its customers of its plans to increase pricing. It’s unclear whether team red will follow Intel’s lead and make its AMD Ryzen 7000 processors more expensive than their 5000 series brethren, making upgrading the CPU inside a gaming PC a costly affair no matter which chip brand you opt for. For now, it’s best to take this news with a hopeful pinch of salt.
