  1. Apple and Google are jointly developing technology to alert people if they have recently come into contact with others found to be infected with coronavirus. They hope to initially help third-party contact-tracing apps run efficiently. But ultimately, they aim to do away with the need to download dedicated apps, to encourage the practice. The two companies believe their approach - designed to keep users, whose participation would be voluntary, anonymous - addresses privacy concerns. Their contact-tracing method would work by using a smartphone's Bluetooth signals to determine to whom the owner had recently been in proximity for long enough to have established contagion a risk. If one of those people later tested positive for the Covid-19 virus, a warning would be sent to the original handset owner. No GPS location data or personal information would be recorded. "Privacy, transparency and consent are of utmost importance in this effort and we look forward to building this functionality in consultation with interested stakeholders," Apple and Google said in a joint statement. "We will openly publish information about our work for others to analyse." US President Donald Trump is expected to give the initiative his backing, at a White House press conference later.

  4. The World Trade Organization (WTO) is predicting a severe decline in international commerce this year. In a new report the WTO forecasts a contraction of between 13% and 32% this year. The wide range of possibilities reflects the uncertainties about the health crisis. It says the impact on trade is likely to exceed the slump caused by the financial crisis just over a decade ago. The more pessimistic case would amount to a decline in global trade similar to what happened in the great depression 90 years ago but in shorter period of time. The WTO's director general Roberto Azevedo described the figures as "ugly". "There is no getting round that", he said. He said the situation was first and foremost a health crisis and he acknowledged that governments had to take steps to protect people's lives. "The unavoidable declines in trade and output will have painful consequences for households and businesses, on top of the human suffering caused by the disease itself," he added.
  5. French police have launched a terrorism investigation after two people were killed and five wounded in a knife attack in south-east France. The attacker entered a tobacconist shop in Romans-sur-Isère, near Grenoble, and stabbed the owners and a customer. He then attacked more people at two other shops before being arrested. Prosecutors said the suspect was a Sudanese refugee in his 30s who lived in the town. Two other people have also been arrested, police said. At the time of his arrest on Saturday, the man was "found on his knees on the pavement praying in Arabic", prosecutors said. David Olivier Reverdy, of the National Police Alliance union, said the man had asked police to kill him. Counter-terrorism prosecutors said they had launched an investigation into "murder linked to a terrorist enterprise". The suspect was not previously known to the police or intelligence services, news website France Bleu reported. On a visit to the town, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said: "This morning, a man embarked on a terrorist journey."

  7. The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in the US has gone above 5,000, while confirmed cases worldwide are close to reaching one million. There were 884 deaths in the US in 24 hours, a new record, according to Johns Hopkins University, which has tracked virus figures globally. The latest victims include a six-week-old baby. More than 216,000 are now infected, the world's highest figure. Reserves of protective equipment and medical supplies are almost exhausted. This has left the federal government and individual US states competing for safety gear, while the unprecedented demand has led to profiteering, officials in the Department for Homeland Security were quoted by the Washington Post as saying. Follow our latest updates The Trump administration says it can acquire adequate supplies, and has $16bn (£13bn) available to do so. State and local officials have complained about insufficient protective equipment such as masks and gowns as well as ventilators, needed to help keep patients breathing.
