  1. The toll from the worst mass shooting in Canada's modern history, a 14-hour rampage over the weekend, has risen to 23 from 19, police say. The victims include a 17-year-old not identified by officials who previously believed all those killed in the province of Nova Scotia were adults. Authorities are yet to determine a motive for the crime. Police say the gunman knew some of the victims. The shooter, a 51-year-old man, was killed in a confrontation with police. Nova Scotia Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) updated the death toll from the attack in a statement on Tuesday along with a rough timeline of the events. Police had previously warned the number of dead could rise as they searched the 16 separate crime scenes across north and central Nova Scotia. Their work was also slowed by the fact there were a number of fires started - about five, according to police. They had to search through the debris of those badly burnt-out homes for remains. The full investigation is likely take months.
  2. More than 140,000 firms have applied for help to pay their wage bill through the government's job retention scheme, which went live on Monday. The programme funds 80% of workers' wages, up to £2,500 a month, if they are put on leave. Speaking at the Downing Street press briefing, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the money would help pay the wages of more than a million people. But many more than that are expected to be "furloughed" due to the lockdown. The Treasury said the system can process up to 450,000 applications an hour. Employers should receive the money within six working days of making an application, it said. The chancellor said the scheme would help people who could have lost their jobs if they had not been furloughed. Employers had made 67,000 job claims within half an hour of the system going live at 08:00, HMRC chief executive Jim Harra told the BBC's Today programme. Mr Harra said: "The big payroll date this month is on the 30th, so employers can claim anytime today, tomorrow or on Wednesday, and there's time to get that money into their account for the 30th of April." Mike Cherry, the national chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses said the system had "held up" under the weight of applications, adding that employers had generally found it straightforward to submit the information required. "Of course this is only day one," he said. "The real mark of success for this scheme will be money in employer back accounts by the end of the month."
  3. Watford are set to become the third Premier League club to agree wage deferrals with their first team squad. Earlier this month, Southampton and West Ham confirmed their players would defer part of their salaries because of the coronavirus pandemic. Arsenal players are set to take a 12.5% pay cut while Chelsea's will reportedly agree to a 10% decrease in salary. In addition to the players, Watford’s senior management and executives are also expected to agree to deferrals. Talks with the Watford squad have taken place amid a backdrop of discontent over the payment of last season’s bonuses, with that issue not yet resolved to the players’ satisfaction. However, the club are close to a wages deal, having told the players they are not intending to furlough staff. It comes after Premier League-wide talks aimed at a collective pay deal broke down without resolution. The Premier League proposed a 30% pay cut, but the Professional Footballers’ Association said that would affect tax contributions to the NHS. Earlier this month, Premier League players launched the #PlayersTogether scheme to generate and distribute funds to the NHS.
  4. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has accused the US of giving a "Hollywood version of events" over an incident in the Gulf this week. The US said Iranian vessels had conducted "harassing" approaches of six of its ships on Wednesday. But the IRGC said it had increased patrols in the Gulf after the US Navy blocked the path of an Iranian ship earlier this month. Tensions rose after the US killed an Iranian general in Iraq in January. The IRGC's statement said that US forces had blocked one of its ships in two separate incidents in early April, using "dangerous behaviour while ignoring warnings". It added that Iran would respond "decisively" to any miscalculation. The incident on Wednesday came a day after armed men - believed to have been IRGC personnel - seized a Hong Kong-flagged tanker in the Gulf of Oman and redirected it into Iranian waters before releasing it. What did the US say happened? The US Navy accused Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) of "dangerous and provocative actions" against its vessels, which were involved in a military exercise with US Army Apache attack helicopters in international waters. Eleven IRGC Navy vessels repeatedly approached of six US Navy and Coast Guard ships at "extremely close range and high speeds on Wednesday", the US Navy said. One passed within 10 yards (9m) of a Coast Guard cutter. Is this the world's most important waterway? What's so important about a ship's flag? "The US crews issued multiple warnings via bridge-to-bridge radio, five short blasts from the ships' horns and long-range acoustic noise maker devices, but received no response from the IRGCN." "After approximately one hour, the IRGCN vessels responded to the bridge-to-bridge radio queries, then manoeuvred away from the US ships and opened distance between them," it added.

  7. A 14-year-old girl with Down's syndrome in Spain has been told she cannot play for her team in a national volleyball competition because she is a year older than her teammates. Laia, who has played for the Esplugues Volleyball Club in Barcelona for eight years, is too old to meet the criteria. The rules of the Spanish Volleyball Cup mean she can still participate, but in a team of a different age group. The decision has angered her parents and teams have threatened to withdraw. Laia's mother, Marta Montserrat, said the organisers of the competition should make an exception for the "common benefit" of allowing her daughter to play with the team she has been a part of since 2011. "The goal with [players] of these groups is to promote personal growth and self-esteem, to promote teamwork," she wrote in a series of Twitter posts, pointing out that there has never been an issue with Laia playing in her usual league.
  8. A star-studded global event to support frontline workers tackling the coronavirus outbreak has begun. The One World: Together At Home show will see more than 100 artists including the Rolling Stones and Billie Eilish play live from their homes. Lady Gaga, who helped organise the concert, will also perform. The eight-hour event run by the Global Citizen movement and the World Health Organization (WHO) is being live-streamed and broadcast on TV. It began with a montage of people under lockdown applauding the efforts of healthcare workers around the world - from France, Spain, the UK and US and elsewhere. "To all of our frontline healthcare workers, we are with you. Thank you for being there for us," read an on-screen caption. UK plans for Gaga's coronavirus concert revealed Gaga announces concert to recognise health workers The event will also be telling real-life stories of nurses and doctors fighting the coronavirus outbreak. Proceeds generated from the concert will go to the Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the WHO, but Lady Gaga has made clear that the show is not a fundraising telethon and will focus on entertainment and messages of solidarity.

  10. It is "very unrealistic" the Toyko Olympics and Paralympics will take place next year unless a coronavirus vaccine has been found by then, says a leading global health scientist. Professor Devi Sridhar said the development of effective and affordable treatment would be a "game-changer" in whether the postponed Games take place. The International Olympic Committee and Tokyo 2020 organisers held an executive board meeting this week at which they reiterated their hope the Games can be the "light at the end of the tunnel". However, IOC coordination commission chair John Coates acknowledged Covid-19 could still affect the rescheduled Olympics, which are due to take place from 23 July-8 August 2021. Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, he said it could have an impact in terms of "mass gatherings or testing of athletes" and that the IOC would be be guided by the World Health Organization. Professor Sridhar, who is chair of global health at the University of Edinburgh, said the chances of Tokyo 2020 going ahead as planned "all depends on a vaccine". "We're hearing from the scientists that this could be possible. I had thought it would be a year or a year and a half away but we're hearing possibly this could come sooner," she said. "If we do get a vaccine within the next year then actually I think that (Olympics) is realistic. The vaccine will be the game-changer - an effective, affordable, available vaccine. "If we don't get a scientific breakthrough then I think that looks very unrealistic. "I think they've made the right decision in saying 'we are going to put it back a year and re-evaluate'. "And I think that is the only way you can deal with this situation - to take stock, to be hopeful, to support our scientific community and our NHS community to do what they can, because science in the long-term is going to be the way we get out of this." A nationwide state of emergency has been declared in Japan until 6 May because of the country's worsening coronavirus outbreak. The IOC and Tokyo 2020 local organising committee announced on Thursday they have set up a joint steering committee to deliver the postponed Olympics, led by Coates and Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori. Mori said: "Soon after the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Games on 24 March, Tokyo 2020 established a 'New Launch' taskforce and we have been working since then to create a structure capable of overcoming these unprecedented challenges. "We believe that today's new step is an important achievement in advancing over the coming year what we have prepared over the past five to six years. We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the Games." BBC Sport has contacted the IOC for comment.
  11. President Donald Trump has appeared to endorse protests against stringent lockdown measures in several states. In a series of tweets, he said: "LIBERATE MINNESOTA", "LIBERATE MICHIGAN" and then "LIBERATE VIRGINIA". Protesters say the severe economic restrictions are hurting citizens, but health officials warn lifting them could spread infection. The US saw its highest daily death toll on Thursday, recording 4,591 deaths in 24 hours. That spike could be because Johns Hopkins University, which records the data, began to include deaths with a Covid-19 probable cause. The US has the highest number of cases and deaths worldwide, more than 672,200 confirmed infections and 33,000 deaths. Demonstrations calling on authorities to end the shutdown have occurred in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, Minnesota, Utah, Virginia and Kentucky. The states Mr Trump referenced in Friday's tweets are all led by Democrats, despite Ohio and Utah having Republican governors. More demonstrations are planned, including in Wisconsin, Oregon, Idaho and Texas. The president's apparent support comes a day after his administration unveiled new guidance for re-opening state economies. What does federal guidance say? That guidance recommends three phases of slowly re-opening businesses and social life, with each phase lasting a minimum of 14 days. It includes some recommendations across all three phases including good personal hygiene and employers developing policies to ensure social distancing, testing and contact tracing. On Thursday, Mr Trump said that reopening the US economy would be done "one careful step at a time" but he called on state governors to move "very, very quickly, depending on what they want to do".

  14. Carl Frampton has said his super-featherweight world title fight with Jamel Herring is "pretty much agreed, without being officially announced". The Belfast boxer had doubted the fight would go ahead as planned in June because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the 33-year-old now feels the bout will proceed once it is safe to do so. "I'm pretty sure it will happen eventually, when restrictions ease a little bit," said Frampton. Speaking to the Lockdown Lowdown podcast, Frampton downplayed any potential size advantage American Herring would have when the pair face off. Frampton 'doubts' world title fight with Herring will happen in June No sparring, no trainer - Frampton thinks coronavirus will scupper June bout "When he got in the ring after my last fight, he looked about 12 stone. I'm thinking 'he's got to make 9st 4lbs'," said the Jackal. "It'll hurt him to do the weight a lot more than me." "I think he can be outboxed. His feet are slow, he doesn't punch that fast either. "In the middle rounds, he gets a little bit lazy. It's almost like he cruises and doesn't want to exert too much energy." Frampton knows that victory over Herring would make him a three-weight world champion, a challenge which the Northern Irishman relishes. "It would be amazing," he added, "Hall of Fame stuff. I want people to remember me."
  15. New Jersey police found 17 bodies in one of the state's largest nursing homes after an anonymous tip said a body was being stored in a shed. A total of 68 people associated with the Andover Subacute and Rehabilitation centres have recently died, with 26 having tested positive for Covid-19. Police did not find a body in the shed, but said the facility's tiny morgue was "overwhelmed". New Jersey has over 71,000 cases and 3,100 deaths due to the coronavirus. Over the weekend, the nursing home had requested 25 body bags from authorities. On Monday, police received the anonymous tip about a body being kept in a shed. Instead, they found 17 bodies kept in a morgue built to house four.
  16. Former Vice-President Joe Biden has denied an allegation that he sexually assaulted a former aide nearly 30 years ago as a US senator. Tara Reade, who worked briefly as a staff assistant in Mr Biden's office, has said that her former boss forced her against a wall, putting his hands under her shirt and skirt. "This absolutely did not happen," Mr Biden's campaign said this week. Mr Biden, 77, is now the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. "He firmly believes that women have a right to be heard - and heard respectfully," said his campaign spokeswoman. "Such claims should also be diligently reviewed by an independent press. What is clear about this claim: It is untrue." Ms Reade, 56, described the allegation in an interview with podcast host Katie Halper in March. She was asked to deliver a gym bag to the senator in the spring of 1993, she said, and found herself alone with Mr Biden. "There was no exchange, really, he just had me up against the wall," she said to Ms Halper. "I remember it happened all at once... his hands were on me and underneath my clothes." He then penetrated her with his fingers, she said. "I remember him saying, first, as he was doing it 'Do you want to go somewhere else?' and then him saying to me, when I pulled away... he said 'Come on man, I heard you liked me,'" she said. "That phrase stayed with me." The fact he was a champion of women's rights in her eyes made the experience all the more shattering, she said.
