  3. President Trump is spending Christmas far away from the city where he was impeached last week. He's at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, which he refers to as the "Southern White House."On his Twitter account, he wished everyone a "MERRY CHRISTMAS" and shared a video of himself and the first lady. "We say a special prayer for those military service members stationed far from home and we renew our hope for peace among nations and joy to the world," he said in the video. The president also used the day to tout the appointment of more conservative judges under his leadership, promote Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's new book, and share Fox News clips about the strength of the stock market and the state of the impeachment. He tweeted: "187 new Federal Judges have been confirmed under the Trump Administration, including two great new United States Supreme Court Justices. We are shattering every record! Read all about this in 'The Long Game,' a great new book by @senatemajldr Mitch McConnell." On Christmas Eve, the president attended church and was seen speaking at dinner with attorney Alan Dershowitz, whom he's reportedly considering adding to his impeachment team. Dershowitz was an outspoken defender of the president during Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of the Trump campaign's ties to Russian interference in the 2016 election, and also defended him in frequent Fox News appearances during the House impeachment inquiry. With the House vote last week, Mr. Trump became only the third U.S. president to be impeached. He impeached for abusing his power and obstructing Congress. The House and the Senate are currently in a stalemate over how to proceed with the impeachment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she won't send the articles over to the Senate until it sets up fair rules for the trial, while the Senate is waiting on the House to pick impeachment managers first.

  7. North Korea is planning to adopt a hard-line policy toward the United States that involves taking denuclearization off the table amid perceptions that President Donald Trump is vulnerable politically, a source familiar with the North Korean leadership's current mindsetThe source said this new policy is likely the so-called "Christmas gift" floated by a top North Korean official earlier this month. It is expected to include abandoning negotiations with Washington and consolidating Pyongyang's status as a nuclear weapons state. Pyongyang will also no longer pursue sanctions relief as a means of achieving economic development either in the short-term or long-term, but will instead increase its commitment to the state's ideology of self-reliance, known as Juche. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced in 2018 that North Korea had "completed" its quest to develop nuclear weapons and vowed to fully focus the country's efforts on economic development and improving the livelihood of his people. It's unclear how Trump and his administration would respond to such a decision. After Trump took office in 2017, he and Kim sparred verbally as North Korea test-fired a bevy of increasingly advanced ballistic missiles, the type designed to deliver nuclear warheads.A flurry of diplomacy that included three in-person meetings between Trump and Kim followed, but working-level negotiations have not made much progress. As the clock has ticked closer to an end-of-year deadline for talks imposed by the North Koreans, the rhetoric on each side has taken on some of the vitriol of 2017. The source said that Kim is expected to take a "wait and see" approach. This is based on the perception that Trump is politically vulnerable due to his impeachment and the looming 2020 presidential election. Analysts believe Pyongyang is worried that if it does cut a deal with Trump and he loses in November, his successor may not uphold the accord. North Korea and the United States have reached previous agreements that did not survive successive administrations, and more recently Kim's diplomats have been quick to cite the Trump administration's decision to abandon a nuclear deal with Iran as a reason it can't trust the United States to commit to a long-term accord. If Trump does win a second term, the North Koreans may be more willing to reengage, the source said. But the bar has definitely been raised for returning to talks with Washington. Denuclearization, the source said, appears to be off the table for now. Chances of a missile test 'very low' Experts and analysts have speculated that the "Christmas gift" warning could portend some sort of advanced missile launch or satellite test, actions that would likely necessitate a response from the US and other global powers. Recent commercial satellite photographs appear to show activity at North Korea's Sohae satellite launch facility and another site linked to the production of intercontinental-range ballistic missiles (ICBMs). However, the chances are "very low" that North Korea will actually conduct a provocative test like a satellite launch, firing an ICBM, or detonating a nuclear weapon, because those acts would be considered too provocative for the likes of China and Russia, Pyongyang's two most important international trading partners, the source said. Both nations have historical ties to North Korea. China, in particular, is believed to account for almost 90% of North Korea's imports -- a vital lifeline for Pyongyang. Backdoor supply lines from China and Russia are beginning to reopen, the source said, and the North Koreans are aware that something its most important economic partners view as too extreme could alienate them. North Korea and Trump escalate war of words 02:06 Analysts say while China and Russia want North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, their number one priority is stability on the Korean Peninsula. Moscow and Beijing have in the past been willing to punish North Korea for its nuclear weapons program development. Both countries approved the punishing international sanctions levied on Pyongyang in 2017 in response to its various missile and nuclear tests. The source said recent engine tests at the Sohae site helped North Korean scientists "gain valuable knowledge," but did not cross a red line that would damage relations with China and Russia. North Korea has conducted a number of shorter-range missile and rocket tests in recent months, a violation of UN Security Council resolutions, but not the agreement reached by Trump and Kim. The North Korean leader only pledged to stop testing long-range missiles and nuclear weapons. If Kim were to violate his pledge to Trump, that would likely necessitate a response by the US. "My relationship with Kim Jong Un is really good, but that doesn't mean he won't abide by the agreement we signed," Trump said at the sidelines of a NATO meeting earlier this month. "I hope he lives up to the agreement, but we're going to find out," added Trump.

  9. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer continued to push for top administration officials to appear before the Senate in the upcoming impeachment trial, citing a newly revealed, "explosive" email from a White House aide as evidence for why witnesses should be called. "Yesterday, we got new evidence about how important having these witnesses [is]," Schumer, a Democrat, said at a press conference Sunday in New York. A new email obtained by the Center for Public Integrity and released Saturday shows Michael Duffey, associate director for National Security Programs at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), informed the Pentagon of the freeze on $391 million in security assistance to Ukraine just 91 minutes after President Trump's call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 25. During the call, Mr. Trump urged Zelensky to open an investigation into his Democratic political rivals. The phone call prompted House Democrats' impeachment inquiry into the president, as they examined whether Mr. Trump conditioned the security assistance and a White House meeting on a public announcement from Zelensky of investigations into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. In the email, which was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, Duffey directed the Pentagon to "please hold off on any additional DoD obligations of these funds" based on guidance he received and "in light of the administration's plan to review" the aid to Ukraine. "Given the sensitive nature of the request, I appreciate your keeping that information closely held to those who need to know to execute the direction," Duffey wrote in the email dated July 25. Duffey is one of four White House officials that Schumer has called to testify before senators during the upper chamber's impeachment trial. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, however, has rebuffed the request. Duffey did not appear before the House during its months-long impeachment inquiry, as the White House blocked aides from complying with congressional subpoenas for testimony and agencies from turning over documents. Schumer and McConnell are at an impasse over the structure of the Senate trial. Schumer said he and McConnell had a "cordial" meeting on Thursday but remained in disagreement over whether to call witnesses. The Democratic leader said he asked McConnell to reconsider his position over the holidays. In a statement on Sunday, OMB spokeswoman Rachel Semmel said it would be "reckless" to suggest the hold on money was connected to Mr. Trump's phone call with Zelensky. The military aid was ultimately released in September. "As has been established and publicly reported, the hold was announced in an interagency meeting on July 18," Semmel said. "To pull a line out of one email and fail to address the context is misleading and inaccurate." But Schumer called the content of Duffey's email "rather explosive" and questioned what the White House was hiding in requesting the hold on assistance be kept quiet. "So far, Senator McConnell and President Trump have come up with no good reason why there shouldn't be witnesses, why there shouldn't be documents," he said. "We don't know what the witnesses will say. We don't know how the documents will read. They might exonerate President Trump or they might further incriminate him. But the truth should come out on something as important as an impeachment." The House on Wednesday passed two articles of impeachment charging Mr. Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not yet sent the articles to the Senate, as she has expressed concerns the upper chamber will not hold a fair trial.
