  12. Enmotus is about to become the Dr. Frankenstein of SSD manufacturers by mixing two somewhat opposing solid state storage technologies. On a single M.2 stick, they’ll take the slowest and fastest forms of NAND and blend them together to make one drive that can hopefully satisfy all demands. SLC (single-level cell) storage has just one bit per cell, which makes it the fastest and most enduring form of NAND. The recently developed QLC (quad-level cell) storage offers four bits per cell and thus quadruple the density, making it much better value but also slower and less durable. QLC drives generally allocate a few gigabytes as a cache to improve speeds. The MiDrive works in reverse, with a primary SLC component and a bonus QLC section to store files that are rarely accessed. A custom Phison controller is used to switch files between the SLC and QLC, which happens seamlessly in the background. “Phison worked closely with Enmotus integrating Enmotus’ technology with our controllers,” said K.S Pua, CEO of Phison Electronics. “Positioning MiDrive between the niche high-performance consumer SSD market and cost-conscious users presents a tremendous market opportunity for Phison and Enmotus.” Enmotus hasn’t said exactly how much of the SSD is SLC -- the total capacity is 1TB -- but in their press material, they describe it as containing the operating system, essential files and even games. Enmotus is offering a five-year warranty on the drives, which is a nice bonus over the three years most QLC drives come with. Exact specifications are still sparse, and no pricing yet, but the company is sampling to OEMs. As with other CES announcements, we'll eventually see if this concept catches on or not.
  13. In context: If you're a member of a low-income household, there's a chance you may have heard of the US government's "Lifeline Assistance" service. Among other things, the FCC-run program provides low-cost cellphones to those who would not be able to afford them otherwise. The program certainly has the potential to do a lot of good for low-income families, but as is the case with many "free" offers, there appears to be a catch for some. According to a new report from antivirus software maker Malwarebytes, one specific Lifeline Assistance phone model, the UMX U686CL, has some nasty surprises hidden within. The phone is being sold by Assurance Wireless, a US-funded offshoot of Virgin Mobile, and it allegedly contains unremovable pre-installed malware. Malwarebytes first discovered this information in October 2019, when it began to receive numerous malicious app complaints from owners of the device. To verify these claims, Malwarebytes purchased a UMX U686CL for itself, and their findings were worrisome, to say the least. The first problematic discovery was a pre-installed app called "Wireless Update," which has been classified as "Android/PUP.Riskware.Autoins.Fota.fbcvd." Wireless Update reportedly begins auto-installing apps (without user consent) from the moment the UMX U686CL is booted up for the first time. Malwarebytes says the apps installed by Wireless Update are not harmful by themselves, but any app that auto-installs other software without so much as informing users has the potential to be shady down the line. In addition to Wireless Update, Malwarebytes found that the UMX U686CL's Settings menu is actually a "heavily-obfuscated piece of malware" known as a "Trojan Dropper" (Android/Trojan.Dropper.Agent.UMX, specifically). A quick look through Malwarebytes' virus database offers the following definition for the malware: Android/Trojan.Dropper is a malicious app that contains additional malicious app(s) within its payload. The Android/Trojan.Dropper will install the additional malicious app(s) onto an infected mobile device. On the Android OS, most often the malicious app(s) to be dropped is/are contained within the Android/Trojan.Dropper's Assets Directory. The Assets Directory is an optional directory that can be added to an APK to store raw asset files. In the case of a Mobile Trojan Dropper, it contains a malicious APK(s) to be dropped and installed. In the case of the UMX U686CL's sketchy Settings app, the malicious payload comes in the form of "Android/Trojan.HiddenAds." Another quick scan through Malwarebytes documentation doesn't reveal any information on this specific piece of malware, but similar variants, such as "Android/Trojan.HiddenAds.BiRa," allegedly display "annoying" full-screen ads on the host device's lock screen. Malwarebytes believes this malware is Chinese in origin, due to the "Chinese characters" used for variable names within its code. However, one commenter countered this claim by pointing out that these characters are not Chinese, but instead Unicode characters that aren't being displayed properly. The code in question can be seen below: Regardless of the malware's origin, its existence is still troublesome, and the problems it presents may not be ones the average user can solve. "Although we do have a way to uninstall pre-installed apps for current Malwarebytes users, doing so on the UMX has consequences," Malwarebytes claims. "Uninstall Wireless Update, and you could be missing out on critical updates for the OS. We think that's worth the tradeoff, and suggest doing so. But uninstall the Settings app, and you just made yourself a pricey paper weight. The company has provided users with a potential method for "remediating" this sort of "essential" malware, but it's not easy, and it might not work for everybody. Malwarebytes has reached out to Assurance Wireless for an explanation on this matter, but the antivirus company received no response. We will also be attempting to contact Assurance Wireless ourselves, and we'll update this article if we receive a reply (though it's a bit unlikely).
  14. Iran's foreign ministry has warned Britain to avoid making "any new mistake" following the arrest of the UK's ambassador to Tehran. British diplomat Rob Macaire was arrested by police in the Iranian capital on Saturday as demonstrations broke out over the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane by Iranian forces. He was subsequently called in by the country's foreign ministry to explain his "illegal and inappropriate" presence at the event. Iran's ambassador to the UK, Hamid Baeidinejad, was subsequently summoned to the Foreign Office on Monday following the "unacceptable" treatment of Mr Macaire - enabling ministers to convey their "strong objections". But, following the meeting, Iran's foreign ministry issued a belligerent statement.Any new mistake of Britain will be severely confronted by Iran and London will be responsible for that," the ministry said, according to Iranian state TV. "The presence of the UK envoy is against diplomatic norms... Threatening Iran with fresh sanctions over that will cause tension between Tehran and London."Earlier, Iranian police released video footage of Mr Macaire that was taken shortly before he was arrested. The ambassador, who was later freed, said he had gone to a vigil for the people who died when Iran shot down the airliner, and left when some chanting began. First footage released by Police, showing #UK ambassador to #Iran Rob Macaire and his companion attending an illegal gathering in #Tehran pic.twitter.com/KxaEzR3b7H — Tasnim News Agency (@Tasnimnews_EN) January 13, 2020 He tweeted that he was detained "half an hour after leaving the area", adding that "arresting diplomats is of course illegal, in all countries". The Iranian foreign ministry said he was summoned to explain his "illegal and inappropriate presence" at an anti-government protest. Iran's Basij militia, which is affiliated with Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard, gathered outside the UK embassy in Tehran demanding it be closed, according to Iranian state media. In an interview with Sky News last week, Mr Baeidinejad denied that Iran had shot the plane down, but later apologised for "conveying such wrong findings". The prime minister's official spokesman said Mr Macaire's detention was an "unacceptable breach of the Vienna Convention and it needs to be investigated". He added: "We are seeking full assurances from the Iranian government that this will never happen again. "The FCO has summoned the Iranian ambassador today to convey our strong objections." Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab addressed the House of Commons on Monday afternoon about the ongoing situation in Iran, saying the regime is at a "crossroads". Mr Raab said: "It can slip further and further into political and economic isolation. "But there is an alternative and the regime does have a choice: the diplomatic door remains open, now is the time for Iran to engage in diplomacy and chart a peaceful way forwards."Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has tweeted his defence of the killing of Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani, saying it did not matter whether he posed an imminent threat or not, given that the past military leader's "horrible past". Four British people died when the Ukrainian International Airlines flight was hit by a missile southwest of Tehran, and Downing Street suggested their families could seek compensation from the Iranian government. The prime minister's spokesman added: "As a first step we need a comprehensive, transparent and independent investigation to know exactly what happened. "Of course the families of the four British victims deserve justice and closure and we will continue to do everything we can to support them in getting that, including options for compensation." Protests in Iran have continued to escalate as the country struggles to control public anger over the downing of the passenger jet. Police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators chanting against the country's leaders - including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - on the second day of protests in Tehran, with rallies spreading to other Iranian cities.

  18. Hear Trump's prediction on Iran in 2007 00:59 London (CNN)This week's escalation in tensions between Iran and the US has exposed an uncomfortable reality for many of America's friends in Europe. When US President Donald Trump called on the UK, Germany, France, Russia and China -- the other nations signatory to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, otherwise known as the Iran deal -- to join him in walking away from the JCPOA, he was asking his European allies to do far more than isolate Iran. The Iran deal, which was signed under the auspices of the European Union, is the single biggest foreign policy achievement in the EU's history. It was the EU that drove efforts to get all of the significant parties to the table. In doing so, it not only encouraged Iran to engage with the West, but it crucially created a forum in which the EU could start to navigate what is now its chief aim in foreign policy. "The EU's top priority is balanced relations between the big two: China and America," said Steven Blockmans, head of foreign affairs at the European Center for Policy Studies. Europe's China problem is acute. The continent's stagnating economies benefit from Chinese investment, but that often comes with the potential security risk of allowing state-owned Chinese companies like telecoms giant Huawei to operate in Europe. For its part, China is only too happy to cement its position as a major influence in Europe, home to some of the largest economies on the planet. Historically, China and Iran have good diplomatic relations. These improved after the signing of the JCPOA, as Chinese investment in Iran increased and continued even after Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal. Something that China and Iran also have in common is poor relations with Trump. He has tried to marginalize both countries by entering into a trade war with one and imposing sanctions on the other.Trump mocks War Powers vote. Democrat claps back 01:51 Meanwhile, Iran has friendly relations -- diplomatically and militarily -- with Russia, another state that the EU must maintain a complicated balancing act with. Many EU nations rely on Russian investment and natural resources, while major European financial centers, including London, have seen huge investments from wealthy Russians looking to get their money out of Russia. However, in recent years, Europe has imposed financial sanctions on Russia, following Russian interference in European nations, ranging from waging misinformation campaigns to the state-backed assassination of Russian dissidents. And Western European nations have been among the most vocal in standing against Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in the east of Ukraine. In asking his European and NATO allies to have a bigger involvement in his standoff with Iran, Trump is essentially asking them to make a choice: stay on good terms with new friends in Beijing, Moscow and Tehran; or fall in line behind its old ally, despite the fact it's currently led by a man who is considered worryingly erratic by most European diplomats and might not even be in office after this year.Fact-checking Trump's claims about Obama and the Iran deal 03:56 Then again, he might be. Europe has to have a long, hard think about what the implications of a second Trump term could be. Four more years, sure. But what would it mean for the long-term politics of the most powerful nation on earth, and can America ever go back to how it was before? Complicating the decision for the EU, at least, is the fact that one of its most powerful members is leaving the bloc in less than a month. "The UK is leaving the EU at a time when Trump is trying to renegotiate the transatlantic relationship," said Mark Leonard, director of the European Council on Foreign Relations. "There's a danger that as Britain leaves the EU, it puts getting trade deals above all else." Sitting at the top of the UK's hit list in terms of trade are the EU and the US -- and the latter is a political priority for London. But most trade experts believe that a comprehensive deal with one sinks the chances of doing so with the other. A good example of how difficult a balance this is for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson can be seen in how he has both supported the US in its strike that killed Iranian military chief Qasem Soleimani, while also telling Tehran that he has every intention of continuing to support the JCPOA. It's unclear how long maintaining both positions remains viable -- especially in the wake of the deaths of four Britons among the 176 who lost their lives in the Tehran plane crash that Iran has admitted responsibility for. The Iran crisis has pulled back the curtain and revealed the much more complicated shifting power dynamics facing Europe. The EU wants to manage the China-US balance; the UK wants to manage its US-EU balance and both the US and China want to shove each other out of the way for strategic primacy on the continent. And at the moment, it's the White House that is acting with the most purpose. In 1948, President Harry Truman signed into law the Marshall Plan, which saw the US send Western Europe billions of dollars in order to rebuild itself in the aftermath of two world wars. In 2020, another American president is arguably a far bigger disruptor to the old continent than, China, Iran or Russia. What a difference 72 years can make.
  19. Recap: Microsoft pledged to overhaul the Windows Command prompt last year with a more modernized command line interface. The resulting effort culminated with a new command line app for Windows 10, known as Windows Terminal. The new Windows Terminal has been receiving steady improvements and features ever since, with Microsoft adding features such as panes for multiple terminal windows in the same tab, custom tab titles, improved accessibility features and more. With the newest update, Microsoft will add retro-style CRT effects, among other new functions. If your computing days happen to predate the advent of LCD and LED monitor technology, then that dithered blue and those horizontal scan lines will immediately be recognizable to you. The old school effect is even replete with the PxPlus IBM VGA8 font set. In addition to the nostalgia, Microsoft is also adding more practical features to Windows Terminal. Those include the ability to search through terminal tabs, as well as adding tab resizing. Then there's enhanced panes and custom key bindings, in addition to custom default settings. The current build with these features is limited to Microsoft employees, but the release of Windows Terminal version 0.8 is due January 14. 20. What just happened? Mechanical switch maker Cherry waited until the final day of the Consumer Electronics Show to announce its latest product. The new Viola mechanical switch is a value-oriented product built on a solder-free design that offers 2mm of pre-travel, 4mm of total travel and 45 cN of actuation force. The Viola switch uses an industry standard cross-stem design for attaching the keycaps. They are hot-swappable and fully compatible with LED lighting systems that seem to be all the rage with gamers these days. The team at Cherry spent over a year designing the new switch, we’re told, and will be building them in Germany alongside their other switches. In testing, TechCrunch said the switch resembled a quiet MX Brown switch. Tom’s Hardware noted that it had a less tactile and clicky feel than other mechanical keyboards and was somewhat quieter, too. Despite those characteristics, it didn’t have a mushy, low-profile feel like a membrane keyboard, the publication added. Cherry hasn’t yet provided guidance with regard to how many keystrokes the switches will be rated for although that will likely come as we get closer to launch. The first Viola keyswitch-equipped keyboards should be coming down the pipe soon starting around the $50 mark.
