  13. A sibling model to the CLA35 4Matic saloon revealed at the New York motor show in April, the Volkswagen Golf R Estate rival receives an AMG-fettled version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine used by the CLA250 Shooting Brake. Changes have been made to the induction and exhaust system as well as adopting an AMG-specific ECU and stiffened mounting points. The transversely mounted unit provides the CLA35 Shooting Brake with 302bhp at 5800rpm and 295lb ft at 3000-4000rpm. Drive is sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a four-wheel drive system that can vary the drive split from front-drive only to 50% front and 50% rear, depending on prevailing traction levels. AMG claims the same 0-62mph time of 4.9sec as the saloon version and a governed 155mph top speed, along with combined WLTP consumption of 38.2mpg. Underpinning the CLA35 Shooting Brake is a reworked chassis from the CLA250 version. It features MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension and can be had with optional adaptive dampers. It also adopts a strengthened bodyshell with an extra aluminium member under the engine to increase rigidity. Mirroring the visual changes of the CLA35 saloon, the CLA35 Shooting Brake receives a restyled front bumper with a splitter, larger air ducts and a revised grille. Further back, there are AMG door mirrors and more prominent sills. At the rear, a lip-style ‘Gurney’ has been added to the spoiler at the top of the tailgate and there’s a new rear bumper with air vents, a multi-channel diffuser and twin chromed tailpipes.

  14. England striker Sturridge, 29, scored 67 goals in 160 appearances after joining from Chelsea in January 2013. Spanish left-back Moreno played 141 times for the club, having signed from Sevilla in August 2014. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "The most important words to say to these two remarkable players are 'thank you'." The Reds are keen to offer Klopp a new contract after winning the Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in Madrid on Saturday. The German said: "Alberto is a person whose personality is reflected in how he plays - full of life, full of energy, always positive. An unbelievable character who is always willing to give all of himself for the team. "Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think. He came to the club while we were trying to rebuild and re-establish ourselves. Some of the goals he has scored for Liverpool were so, so, so important. "We will miss them of course, but we can say farewell with the best words possible: Guys, you leave as European champions." Both players leave Anfield having fallen out of favour during the 2018-19 season. Sturridge made 27 appearances in all competitions but 20 of those were as a substitute. Moreno made just four starts and one substitute appearance. They were both part of the Liverpool team that was beaten in the 2016 EFL Cup and Europa League finals in Klopp's first season in charge. Sturridge began his career at Manchester City before joining Chelsea in 2009. He also spent six months on loan at Bolton during his time at Stamford Bridge before making the move to Anfield. He scored 24 goals in his first full season at the club as Luis Suarez's strike partner as Liverpool challenged for the Premier League before ultimately finishing second to Manchester City. After struggling for first-team football he spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom, although injury restricted him to just six appearances. In November 2018 Sturridge was charged with misconduct by the Football Association over alleged breaches of betting rules in January of that year. The striker, who denies the charges, was given until February to provide written evidence but has yet to hear a verdict from the governing body. Moreno, who has been capped four times by Spain, came through the youth ranks at Sevilla before moving to Anfield for around £12m. He was first-choice left-back left for two seasons but lost his place to James Milner and then Andy Robertson in recent seasons.
  15. Heavily armed members of the Rapid Support Forces are said to be fanning out across the capital and the neighbouring city of Omdurman, clearing barricades and firing into the air. The military has faced international condemnation for the deadly crackdown. It has ended a pact with the protesters over a transition to civilian rule. The two sides had initially agreed a three-year transition, culminating in elections. On Monday, however, the Transitional Military Council (TMC) said polls would be held within nine months. The demonstrators had argued that a longer period was needed in order to guarantee fair elections and dismantle the political network associated with the former government of President Omar al-Bashir. After 30 years in power, Mr Bashir was overthrown by the military in April, amid pressure from the protesters. The demonstrators had been occupying the square in front of the military headquarters since 6 April, five days before Mr Bashir was overthrown. Many Khartoum residents blamed the Rapid Support Forces for the crackdown. The paramilitary unit - formerly known as the Janjaweed - gained notoriety in the Darfur conflict in western Sudan, which began in 2003. Sudan's military has faced international condemnation for its attack, but there were signs it could have happened. The country has been driven backwards by a military elite intent on holding on to power. The TMC has scrapped agreements reached with the opposition Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC), saying this will speed up the transition to democratic elections. That plan is likely a fiction. The military also enjoys another advantage: in an age of international division, the notion of an "international community" pressuring the regime is fantasy. Sudan's crisis has exposed the reality of international politics: that force can have its way, without consequence, if the killers and torturers represent a valuable asset to other powers. It is impossible to say whether the FFC can come back as a street-driven force. What will not change, in fact what has been deepened, is the alienation of people from their rulers. On Tuesday, however, much of Khartoum seemed to be under lockdown. Video shot on mobile phones showed columns of troops advancing along the streets, removing barricades and firing into the air. Flights into Khartoum have also been disrupted. Large numbers of heavily armed troops were also reported on the streets of Omdurman, Sudan's second-largest city, just across the River Nile from Khartoum. A woman, identified only as Sulaima, told the BBC that troops from the Rapid Support Forces were "all over Khartoum". "They're surrounding neighbourhoods, they're threatening people. They're also using live ammunition. They're everywhere. We're not feeling safe and we don't have trust in the security forces. It's complete chaos." Earlier, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the TMC head, said on state television the council had decided to "stop negotiating" with the protesters and "cancel" all previous agreements, and that an election would be held in nine months. The US, the UK and Norway expressed "serious concern" over the announcement, and called for "an agreed transfer of power to a civilian-led government". What happened on Monday? The security services moved on the main protest site early on Monday and, according to activists, forces also surrounded a hospital in Khartoum and opened fire at another. In a statement read on national television, the military council said the operation had targeted "trouble makers and petty criminals" and that they were dedicated to protecting civilians. The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which is spearheading the nationwide protests, responded by calling for a campaign of "sweeping civil disobedience to topple the treacherous and killer military council".
