  2. If you have the time and hard drive space, you can squeeze a huge amount of free entertainment out of your Steam client. With that in mind we've organised the best free and free-to-play games together into one list. The free games section consists of games that contain no microtransactions. You might be able to buy extra episodes or DLC packs, but you'll get the full core experience for your download in this category. The free-to-play section contains games that are supported by in-game microtransactions. We've considered the fairness of the in-game stores when selecting these games, and believe you can get a lot of fun out of them before you put in credit card details. We'll update the list over time as we discover more gems hidden away in the Steam store. FREE GAMES Alien Swarm Link : Steam Up to four players fight through space stations overrun with hordes of alien bugs. Beating missions earns you weapons and equipment that let you specialise your marine. Expect almost Starship Troopers scale hordes at points, as the AI director tries to push your team to the brink of death. Alien Swarm is a forgotten Valve experiment, but it's perfectly good fun in co-op. The complete game code and mod tools are available, but the community never produced enough to sustain the game beyond its opening months. It's still worth downloading the game with some friends and enjoying what's there though. Cry of Fear Link : Steam A quality Half-Life total conversion that's full of scares. The game twists the old GoldSrc engine to give you an inventory system and a big, dark city to explore. Prepare yourself for relentless tension across eight hours of exploration and combat with 24 different weapons. The download also includes a bunch of custom campaigns and an unlockable extra campaign once you beat the main story. That's good value for a free download. FREE-TO-PLAY GAMES Dota 2 Link : Steam Dota 2 is one of the biggest games on Steam. Described simply, two teams of five wizards battle to knock over towers and flatten the enemy base in battles that tend to last between 30 minutes and an hour. In practice it's one of the deepest and most complicated competitive games in the world. Every year the huge International tournament draws millions of viewers, and with 110+ heroes and a consistently shifting meta, this could be the only game you ever need in your Steam library. The free-to-play implementation is mostly good. Most microtransactions are tied to cosmetics. In addition to individual item purchases you can also buy battle passes that grant access to modes, quests that you complete by playing games, and more cosmetic items. Warframe Link : Steam This third person action RPG about futuristic ninjas can be completely baffling for new players, but if you persist with it you'll find a deep and rewarding game on the verge of some of its most ambitious updates to date. At launch it was a game about repeating short missions—and that's still part of it—but there are also open world zones and plans to add co-op space combat. Warframe has been getting better and better in the last few years, and now we reckon it's one of best free to play games on PC . You can spend real money to speed up crafting time, and to buy items and frames outright. Everything is perfectly craftable using in-game currency however, and players seem more interested in using the real-money Platinum currency to unlock new colour schemes.
  3. What might it take to unite people of all ages, backgrounds and interests toward a common goal? Easy: An impending ecological crisis threatening the survival of humanity. That's one appeal of the multiplayer video game "Fortnite," an unlikely cultural phenomenon that is sweeping the globe while amassing a minor fortune for its creators. If you're not among the 125 million people playing "Fortnite" and are feeling left behind, we break down everything you need to know. Let's start with the basics. What the heck is this game? "Fortnite" is essentially a crossover between "The Hunger Games" (a post-apocalypse battle) and "Minecraft" (a creative sandbox where players can build anything they like). You can play it on Xbox, PlayStation, Windows and Mac platforms. There are two versions: "Fortnite: Save the World," which has players banding together to fight off zombie-like monsters who drop from storm clouds, and its free (and more po[CENSORED]r) spinoff, "Fortnite Battle Royale," which pits up to 100 players against each other in a frenzied fight for survival. Last one standing wins. So why is it called 'Fortnite?' A fortnight is a period of two weeks. But the title also refers to fort-building, knight battle and the darkness of the storm clouds. Clever, right? 'Hunger Games?' Monsters?? This game sounds violent "Fortnite" is rated T for Teen, which means suitable for ages 13 and up. It certainly contains violence, but its animation is cartoon-like and there's no blood or gore. The Entertainment Software Rating Board explains its parental guidance this way: "This is an action game in which players build forts, gather resources, craft weapons and battle hordes of monsters in frenetic combat ... players use guns, swords, and grenades ... (and) can also defeat enemies by using various traps (e.g., electric, spikes, poisonous gas). Battles are highlighted by frequent gunfire, explosions, and cries of pain." Some parents have complained about the game. But while the objective is to kill all of your opponents, "Fortnite" is nowhere near as violent as games like "Call of Duty" or "Grand Theft Auto." What makes it so po[CENSORED]r? One driving factor behind "Fortnite's" po[CENSORED]rity is its cost, or lack thereof. Because the "Battle Royale" version is entirely free and accessible on a number of platforms, it has a low barrier to entry -- allowing new players to quickly acclimate and feel accomplished. The developers of the game are attuned to its po[CENSORED]rity and release updates weekly with new items and actions. Players also compete on Twitch, an Amazon-owned live streaming site for gamers, and now on the Nintendo Switch (alhough they're still working out the bugs on this platform). The game's spontaneity and cartoonish glee make it highly accessible. But "Fortnite" also has a high-skill ceiling, keeping players hooked and eager to improve. How is this game making any money if it's free? The original version of "Fortnite" costs $40, and a deluxe version is $60. But it mostly turns a profit from its in-game currency, V-bucks. "Fortnite" generated more than $125 million in revenue in March alone -- mostly from in-game purchases. Players spend real money to acquire V-bucks, which can be used to buy customizable aspects of the game such as tools, weapons, outfits and even emotes. Slow down -- what's an emote? Emotes are dances or gestures that characters can do in the game. They are one of the most po[CENSORED]r aspects of "Fortnite" and have generated hundreds of memes. Po[CENSORED]r emotes include the Floss dance, Carlton's "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" dance and the Take the L dance, in which a player makes an L on their forehead while kicking, donkey-like, from side to side. Is it a passing fad, or is 'Fortnite' here to stay? For the time being, it looks like "Fortnite" has staying power. Its mobile platforms alone earn $1 million a day, and its fans range from 13-year-old boys to 30-something gamers. The game is also po[CENSORED]r with celebrities. Rappers Drake and Travis Scott, NFL player JuJu Smith-Schuster and po[CENSORED]r Twitch gamer Ninja all competed on a Twitch livestream of the game and broke the site's record for concurrent viewers. Other famous fans of the game include Joe Jonas, Chance the Rapper and Norm MacDonald. This month's Fortnite E3 Celebrity Pro Am Tournament featured 50 celebrities and 50 gamers competing for a $3 million charity prize pool. Last month, creator Epic Games announced that "Fortnite" will be joining the competitive gaming world. During the 2019 Fortnite World Cup, players will be able to compete for $100 million in prize money.

  8. The fact that it's the Brazilian president's first foreign trip is a sign of just how important he sees his relationship with the US. "It's the beginning of a partnership focused on liberty and prosperity, something that all of us Brazilians have long-wished for," he said, as he set off for Washington, adding that it was the first time in a while that a pro-American Brazilian president visited the US capital. A new chapter Ahead of the meeting, a senior administration official talked of a "historic" remaking of the US-Brazil relationship. A relationship that has "always been one of potential, but yet it always seemed that that potential has never been met", said the official. "This time, it is different. There's truly going to be a north-south axis of the two largest economies in the Western Hemisphere." They are certainly words that will please Jair Bolsonaro, the man dubbed "Trump of the Tropics", who, it seems, has finally met his idol. "I've always admired the USA and this sense of admiration has only increased since you took office," Mr Bolsonaro said to Mr Trump as they gave a joint press conference in the Rose Garden. At times, during this trip, he's sounded like a Trump super-fan rather than the leader of one of the world's biggest economies. Right-wing allies There's no doubt the two leaders have a lot in common. For a start, their rise to the top took both nations by surprise. They are both anti-immigration, they prioritise national economic interests above all else and they share a preoccupation with turning around the fortunes of their nations. So much so, Mr Bolsonaro has even adopted Mr Trump's campaign slogan. "We want to have a great Brazil just like Trump wants to have a great America," Mr Bolsonaro told the audience at the US Chamber of Commerce on Monday night, repeating an oft-used phrase that's familiar to Brazilians. And according to Mr Bolsonaro, it's not just an economic connection that exists between the two countries. "We believe in the family, in God, we are against political correctness, we don't want gender ideology - we want a world of peace and freedom," he said. "We need to work hard to ensure these goals are achieved." Unequal relationship But for some, this visit has been seen as far more important for the Brazilian leader and his supporters back home than it is for Mr Trump. "I don't think Trump is at all interested in establishing some kind of personal relationship with Bolsonaro," says Oliver Stuenkel, professor of International Relations at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Sao Paulo. "The US looks at this and says we appreciate your love, it's not that we care as much as you do, and if there's anything you can give us, we'll be happy to give you something in return." Mr Trump has reached out - he said he would encourage efforts to give Brazil Nato privileges and help the country get membership of the OECD. Music to Mr Bolsonaro's ears, although in practice, there's a lot to be done behind the scenes for any of that to happen. Confronting Venezuela But the one aspect that will bind the two leaders together more immediately is Venezuela. They're off to a good start with their shared hatred of socialist politics. "The twilight hour of socialism has arrived in our hemisphere," said Mr Trump on Tuesday afternoon. "The last thing we want in the US is socialism," adding that Mr Bolsonaro, who has been very public in his condemnation of left-wing politics in Brazil, would be somebody he would consult with going forward. The US has said all options remain on the table when it comes to Venezuela, but Mr Bolsonaro's position isn't so clear-cut.

    Godus

Godus is one of the more active simulation games available. You are in charge of building a new civilization. Except you also play God. You can move landscapes around to fit your needs. You'll also be responsible for the well-being of your inhabitants. However, you can also throw meteors and cause natural disasters if you want to. It's almost like a light version of the po[CENSORED]r PC series Black and White. It is a freemium title, though, and has many of the same pitfalls as other freemium simulation games.
  12. Developer: Mohawk Games Publisher: Stardock It’s a rare thing to find a game that slots neatly into a genre but doesn’t seem to follow many – if any – of the established rules of that genre. Offworld Trading Company is one such game. It’s about offworld colonies, except you’re not worrying about keeping your po[CENSORED]tion happy and healthy. It’s about making big profits, but money is a fluid thing rather than the central resource. It doesn’t contain direct combat, but it’s one of the most ruthless and competitive game you’re ever likely to play. Oh, and you could pretty much follow an entire game by watching numbers fall and rise at the side of the screen, only glancing at the actual map once or twice. Created by a team led by Civilization IV designer Soren Johnson, Offworld Trading Company is a game about the impact of decisions. Everything, even hesitation, creates change, and because the foundation of the entire game is in flux – the numbers that drive everything visible and entirely predictable – it creates a space where you become proactive and reactive simultaneously. It’s impossible to act without influencing the status and decision-making of your competitors, and by the time the impact of one change has been felt, another handful have already happened. Notes: Partly inspired by M.U.L.E., which dropped off our list this year, Offworld Trading Company is a perfect social game – short-form, multiplayer and frequently hilarious despite its intensity.

    NOVA Legacy

NOVA Legacy is the latest title in a franchise of po[CENSORED]r FPS games. It's a sci-fi shooter that comes with a full campaign mode, decent graphics, several game modes, online multiplayer mode, and more. You can even craft and upgrade your weapons. Some of its tertiary features include leaderboards, character customizations, and death cam replays in multiplayer mode. It's a freemium game. That makes it feel and play differently than its predecessors. Still, it's among the best. Don't believe its 20MB claim, though. it is much larger than that.

    Ys Book I & II

One of the lesser known long-running RPG series is Ys (pronounced “ees”). It’s a shame it’s not more po[CENSORED]r, because Ys has been offering up enjoyable action RPGs regularly since the 1980s. What you get in this collection, originally released on TurboGrafx-CD but now available more widely, is enhanced remakes of the franchise’s first two installments. The games center around Adol Christin, a redheaded hero on a quest to collect the books of Ys and takes on the evil forces rampaging through the world. With splashy real-time combat and eye-catching anime cut scenes, this collection helped prove that CD was the gaming medium of the future.
