KBB Editors’ Overview The Jeep Wrangler is the rare vehicle that needs no introduction. Its off-road capabilities are legendary, it’s as at home crawling over boulders as it is dropping off the kids at school, and its roots date to World War II, where it is credited for helping bring victory to the Allies. So how’s that for heritage? Today's Jeep Wrangler is a satisfying mix of classic design and real-deal off-road chops with modern safety systems, amenities, and technology. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is now three years into its latest generation, known as the JL. It remains offered as a 2-door or the more po[CENSORED]r and roomier 4-door Wrangler Unlimited. All models come with a soft-top that can be removed (along with the doors) for open-air adventures. An optional hardtop is available. All Wranglers are 4-wheel drive, and a variety of engines are available. Standard is a V6, or buyers can opt for a spunky turbocharged 4-cylinder, a V6 with mild-hybrid assistance, or a wonderfully stout diesel V6 that debuted last year. New for 2021 is the Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid Jeep with an estimated 25 miles of electric-only range. The Wrangler is a top-seller and boasts class-leading resale value. But competition is heating up. Whereas the aging Toyota 4Runner has been the Wrangler's main rival, arriving shortly or here now are the Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport, and the reborn Land Rover Defender. How Much Does the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Cost? The 2021 Jeep Wrangler has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price starting at $ 28,295 for a 2-door model and $ 31,795 for the more po[CENSORED]r 4-door Wrangler Unlimited. These prices are before the rather hefty $ 1,495 destination fee. In reality, you’re likely to spend thousands more. Unless you’re OK with your Jeep Wrangler having a manual transmission, crank windows, and a small infotainment screen, you’ll probably step up to at least a Sport S or Sahara (4-door only) trim. In that case, plan on being in at least the high $ 30,000 or $ 40,000 range. The luxurious High Altitude model starts right around $ 50,000. These prices are right in line with rivals. The Toyota 4Runner begins over $ 36,000 and ranges to over $ 50,000. Perhaps the Jeep’s biggest new rival, the forthcoming Ford Bronco, is set to start at $ 28,500. Like the Wrangler, the Bronco is a body-on-frame off-roader offered in wither 2- or 4-door variants. The unibody Bronco Sport crossover will begin under $ 27,000. The Jeep Wrangler has fantastic resale value, as evidenced by winning the latest Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Award in its class. Driving the 2021 Jeep Wrangler The 2021 Jeep Wrangler remains first and foremost an off-road vehicle. Yes, this Wrangler JL is its most refined yet, but don’t expect plushness. Its body-on-frame chassis and solid axles prioritize off-road ability vs. on-road comfort. On highways and at speed, the Wrangler can be squirrelly. In our tests, it required lots of steering input to keep things on track. Wind noise is also an issue. You won’t find many rounded edges here, and all those flat angles mean wind resistance. Will you get used to this? Most likely. And if you actually use Wrangler for what it's made to do, you’ll be amazed. Simply put, few vehicles can match the Wrangler's off-road prowess. Even in base form, it will easily tread over terrain that would make a unibody crossover SUV cringe. Amp it up in Rubicon trim with features like front and rear locking differentials and sway-bar disconnect, and it can tackle terrain as severe as, well, the Rubicon Trail. (We did just that years ago in the prior-gen Wrangler and were astounded at its capabilities). We might also add that, if you don’t know what a sway-bar disconnect is or why you might need it, you can probably skip the Rubicon model. Yes, we know it looks cool, but it seems a waste of money and hardware if you’ll never actually use it. The Wrangler's V6 is capable. With the standard manual transmission, it can feel a bit taxed, and the transmission isn’t all that gratifying. Then again, most buyers will opt for the automatic transmission, which works well. Another benefit is that for 2021, all V6 automatic models get the eTorque mild-hybrid assist as standard. The turbocharged 4-cylinder packs surprising punch. It puts out nearly as much horsepower as the V6 and more torque. Our favorite powertrain (at least for now) is the diesel V6. Potent and guttural, it enables the Wrangler to push through just about everything. We have yet to test the new 4xe plug-in hybrid Wrangler, but look forward to this new era. We should also mention that we spent a year driving and living with a Jeep Wrangler and came away impressed overall. Favorite Features DIESEL ENGINE It's the engine that Wrangler fans desired for years, and Jeep has delivered. Making 260 horsepower and an even more impressive 442 lb-ft of torque, we love the locomotive force this turbodiesel. At up to 29 mpg, it’s also relatively efficient. RESALE VALUE The Wrangler also stands out for its tremendous resale value. Its class-leading residual value means that if you decide to sell your Wrangler, you can expect top dollar compared to other used vehicles. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Interior The Jeep Wrangler has total seating for either four or five depending on model. The 2-door Jeep Wrangler has only a pair of seats in back, which means it holds four people total. The more po[CENSORED]r 4-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is more family-friendly with a traditional rear seat that holds up to three people for a total capacity of five passengers. As you might guess, the longer 4-door Wrangler also has better rear-seat legroom and cargo room behind the rear seat. Like its exterior, the Jeep Wrangler's interior design is marked by its simple, upright nature. The dash is wall-like with a center screen that ranges in size from 5 to 8.4 inches. Controls are simple and minimalistic. Base Wranglers still have manual door locks and crank windows. Models with power windows have the switches not on the doors (which are removable) but in the front console. The $ 50,000 High Altitude model is more spruced up with Nappa-trimmed leather upholstery, but you still won’t find power adjustments for the seats. Remember, this vehicle is made with the idea in mind that you will have to wash out its interior after a day in the dunes or fording watering. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Exterior This latest version of the Jeep Wrangler is only a few years old, but it still takes a pretty keen eye to tell this gen from the last one. That’s by design. The Wrangler is one of the most iconic vehicles in the world, and Jeep knows better than to drastically change the formula. As with the prior generation, the Jeep Wrangler comes in two forms: 2-door or 4-door. The 2-door model is markedly shorter at just 166.8 inches in length. The 4-door Unlimited model is nearly 20 inches longer. Both have a boxy design that dates to the Jeep's WW II ancestors. All models come with a soft-top that can be removed. Also like past models, the doors can be removed and the windshield folded, turning the Wrangler into a truly open-air adventure mobile, like a dune buggy with air conditioning and Apple CarPlay. For better insulation and protection, two hardtop roofs are available: one with twin removable panels, the other with a power-operated retracting cover. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Standard Features The 2021 Jeep Wrangler comes in four primary trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara (4-door only), and Rubicon. At its most basic in the Sport trim, the Wrangler includes the base-model Wrangler Sport comes standard with the V6 and 6-speed manual transmission. It also comes standard with 4-wheel drive, in this case, Jeep's Command-Trac system. You also get standard fog lights, underbody skidplates, push-button ignition, and Jeep's new Sunrider with its clever sunroof panel. What’s more noteworthy is what’s missing. No air conditioning (it's optional on this base model), no power windows, no power door locks. The infotainment system is basic, just a 5-inch touchscreen display. No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on this one, but it does have Bluetooth and a USB input. Most buyers will have a better experience stepping up to at least a Sport S model. That gets you power windows, door locks, and A / C, keyless entry, and opens the door for more options like active safety features and a better infotainment system. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Options The Sahara 4-door Wrangler gets a 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, and opens the door for more options. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is made for serious off-road duty and boasts a low-range crawl ratio, front and rear locking diffs, electronically controlled sway bar disconnect, rock rails, and more. It also comes with the 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto that's In addition to the four primary trims, the Wrangler has other variants like the Willys, Altitude, and premium High Altitude. For 2021, there is an 80th Anniversary edition that can be had with leather seats and Granite Crystal interior accents, while the cheeky Wrangler Islander has a beach-theme interior and exterior with an white hard top roof. Options abound and vary with trim, but main highlights are the diesel V6 or turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, locking rear differential, forward-facing off-road camera, plus heated front seats and steering wheel, Alpine audio system, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation. Optional active-safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Engine The 2021 Jeep Wrangler comes standard with the venerable Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 that makes 285 horsepower. It is fitted standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. Most buyers, however, will want the optional 8-speed automatic transmission. For 2021, the 3.6-liter V6 connected to the automatic comes standard with the eTorque mild hybrid system to enhance fuel economy. Optional on all models is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 270 horsepower. It comes standard with an 8-speed automatic. Note the former 2.0-liter with eTorque assist has been dropped. Optional on 4-door Wranglers is the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. As noted in Favorite Features, this engine has good horsepower (260) and even better torque (442 lb-ft). It comes standard with the 8-speed automatic. Coming later is the all-new Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid with up to 25 miles of electric-only range. It pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and two electric motors. Total output is estimated at 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, making this the most powerful Jeep Wrangler in the lineup. It also uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive systems include the Command-Trac part-time 2-speed transfer case, Selec-Trac 2-speed transfer case with full-time 4-wheel drive, and the Rubicon's Rock-Trac 2-speed transfer case with 4.0 : 1 low-range gear, front and rear electric locking differentials, and disconnecting front sway bar. The Jeep Wrangler is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Like other modern vehicles, the Wrangler uses a start / stop system to cut engine power at idle, such as stoplights. The system can be defeated with the press of a button.

The number of Coronavirus infections recorded in China decreased from 10 on Monday to two on Tuesday, all of which were imported infections. However, China has not recorded any local infection with the Corona virus, which appeared in Wuhan last December before it spread around the world, 24 days ago. Today, Wednesday, the Public Health Commission of China said that the mainland recorded two cases of Covid-19 disease, caused by the Coronavirus, on Tuesday, down from 10 cases on Monday. The committee added, in a statement Wednesday, that the two new cases of two people who arrived in the country from abroad, kept China without local injuries for the twenty-fourth consecutive day. The number of new cases in asymptomatic China decreased to 8, from 13 on Monday, according to Reuters. China does not count asymptomatic patients as confirmed cases. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in China now stands at 85,146, while the number of deaths has remained steady at 4,634 deaths. On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping participated in an award ceremony for medical professionals who actively participated in fighting the virus. The Chinese president said that his country has passed a "historical and exceptional test" in its handling of the Corona virus, praising the country's "heroic struggle" against the disease. "We quickly achieved initial success in the people's war against the Coronavirus," he added. We are leading the world in the journey of economic recovery and the fight against Covid-19, according to what AFP reported. During the ceremony, the Chinese president distributed gold medals to four "heroes" from the medical field, to the applause of hundreds of attendees, Tuesday, who all wore masks and badges showing a large red flower on their uniforms. It is noteworthy that the United States is the country most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, as about 6.3 million Americans have been infected with the virus, including about 190,000 deaths. Baked apples are your starting point as the autumn evenings close in, but there are many more delicious ways of using the fruit, including savory and salad dishes, and an unusual cocktail The British apple season is a long one - spanning the earliest and latest ripening varieties, it runs from August to November - so there is no need to panic or speak of gluts. Stored under optimal conditions, apples also last a really long time, which is why we’re never without them. For the grower, apple season is a thing - for the rest of us, not so much. But there’s nothing like year-round plenty to induce a failure of imagination, a failure that often starts at the supermarket. I’ll just buy apples, you think. I can always pile them in a bowl until inspiration strikes. Sometimes the fruit flies get there first. Fortunately there is no shortage of apple recipes to warm up the cooling nights of early autumn. Here are 17 of the best. If the words “peel, core and slice a kilo of apples” are enough to put you off any new recipe, you may want to think about purchasing a crank-handle peeling machine. While hardly necessary gadgets, peeler-corers are relatively inexpensive things of beauty, fun to use, and most claim to do pears as well. Even if you don’t want to risk the investment, you should still watch a YouTube video of someone demonstrating some antique models, which is reliably mesmerising. An old-fashioned baked apple is as good a place to begin as any, since it requires a minimum of effort, skill or planning. Cored eating apples are stuffed with a mix of spices and dried fruit and then baked until soft - between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on size. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall uses a fruit butter that also includes muscovado sugar and cider brandy, while Nigel Slater offers the option of honey, brandy and crumbled ginger cake. A baked apple is, as you can see, a forgiving thing, so feel free to use what you’ve got. Apple charlotte is only marginally more complicated: browned apples are baked in a loaf tin lined with white bread, like an autumnal version of summer pudding. Apple crumble is another classic, and it's also a handy way to use up any blackberries you may have picked. You should never pass up the opportunity because there simply aren’t 17 good ways to cook with blackberries. There are, by my count, four, and this is one of them. Dan Lepard's alehouse apple pie is as rough and ready as it sounds: the pastry even has beer in it. The apples, chopped, browned in butter and layered with spices, are loaded into the middle of a square of rolled pastry, which is then folded haphazardly over them by the corners, so the resulting pie looks as if it was made by a drunk. For a more considered-looking pudding, Felicity Cloake's perfect French apple tart has a slick, patisserie-style finish, but don't worry - all that fussiness is confined to the top layer, with thinly sliced apples (peeling, she insists, is optional) laid out in a neat spiral. Below that are layers of frangipane and apple puree. This is not the same as a tarte tatin, which is baked upside down, with the pastry on top, and then inverted for serving. Here’s an easy recipe for that using shop-bought puff pastry. Crisp eating apples are recommended for all of the above, by the way. As Lepard points out, sour cooking apples tend to turn to fluff when baked. His recipe for bramley and custard meringue pie actually makes a virtue of this - the fluffy apple mush is swirled into a custard and topped with stiff egg whites. Toffee apples exert a powerful nostalgic pull, although thinking back they were probably more fun to make than they were to eat. This recipe is certainly simple enough, but it begins with an off-putting step: you have to drop your apples in boiling water first, because they're coated in a preservative wax and if you don't get it off the toffee won ' t stick. To be fair, you’d probably need to do this even if your fruit came straight from the tree - apples produce their own natural wax, which is washed off during processing, and then replaced. The classic combination of apple and toffee can be revisited in more genteel form in this toffee apple cake from James Rich, or in Liam Charles’ toffee apple buns. Granny smith is the preferred variety for both recipes, but don’t let an aging bowl of cox’s stop you trying either. Apart from puddings, apples work beautifully in any number of savory dishes, and have a well-known affinity with pork - surely the least alarming of all the meat / fruit pairings. This is exploited to good effect in Yotam Ottolenghi's roast pork belly, along with soy and ginger and again in this chorizo, apple and cider tapas from Rachel Kelly. Gizzi Erskine's pork and apple stroganoff is a slow braise that can be left to gently bubble away until tender. Apple is a familiar component of fruit salad, but here are two salads where apple is the only fruit, providing a sharp, sweet contrasting note - a tart variety would be ideal for this sort of thing. The first is a remoulade of apple and radish and the second a Thai-inspired tomato, apple and shallot salad with a lime and fish sauce dressing. Finally, an apple cocktail - not the ubiquitous and deeply misguided appletini, but a drink from the Cutting Room Bar's Yoann Carrot called Apple Crumble in a Glass. It's a heady mix of bourbon, apple juice, amaretto, cannelle syrup and digestive biscuit. Unless you press your own apple juice - and I think you should - the only apple required here is for the fan-shaped garnish, which is probably also the most difficult part of the recipe. Skip that bit if you have to, and remember: do not operate apple-peeling machinery under the influence of alcohol.

Although it's an arguably handsome compact-crossover SUV offering strong turbocharged engines, a chassis that favors ride comfort over cornering precision (perfectly reasonable in this kind of vehicle) and comes with a decent level of standard equipment, it's in direct competition with such giants of the class as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Both Japanese rivals have more interior space for passengers and cargo alike. So GMC pitches its Terrain at the more upscale end of the market, as illustrated by the elegant (for a crossover SUV) styling. And just to top it off, the Denali version is the plushest of all the new Terrain models. How much does the 2021 GMC Terrain cost? Only available with front-wheel drive and the smallest engine, the 2021 GMC Terrain SL has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 25,000. The destination charge is $ 1,195, bringing the total to $ 26,195. We recommend checking out higher Terrains. The SLE, from $ 29,595, doesn’t add much, but becomes eligible for more options. All-wheel drive is an extra $ 1,600. The SLT starts at $ 32,395. We expect the 2021 Terrain Denali to start at $ 39,495 before options. At the time of compiling this review, official pricing for the Denial trim has yet to be announced. These prices are similar to the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. Resale values tend not to be as strong as Honda and Toyota, so that aspect needs factoring in as well. Driving the 2021 GMC Terrain Making just 170 horsepower, the base 1.5-liter turbo is best described as adequate. The 252-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is the one to choose, and can even pull 3,500 pounds. With either engine, a 9-speed automatic transmission is in the picture. Around town or on the highway, the Terrain is comfortable and quiet. Attack a set of curves, and it's nimble enough to be engaging, as opposed to wildly entertaining. That’s partly thanks to reinforcing up front that makes the steering feel confident. The 2021 Terrain Denali comes with a dedicated suspension setup that’s even more comfortable than the lower trims. Favorite Features STANDARD GMC PRO SAFETY Standard in every 2021 Terrain, this array of safety features includes forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance / lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. FLEXIBLE CARGO AREA We hinted at the 2021 Terrain’s relatively smallish cargo area earlier, but it is a smart space, especially with the fold-flat front passenger seat offering extra versatility for carrying longer objects. There’s handy under-floor stowage as well. 2021 GMC Terrain Interior It’s quiet in here. Effective sound insulation, a supple ride, and well-cushioned seats make the 2021 Terrain's cabin a pleasant environment, even if its design is not as well-considered as the exterior. A few hard plastics in the lower areas of the dashboard and doors are reminders that this is a mainstream marque, not a luxury one. The embroidered headrests and stitched dashboard covering in the Denali bring a sophisticated air, though. The rear seats don’t slide or recline, but the front seatback folds for some extra cargo versatility. Luggage space behind the rear seats measures 29.6 cubic feet. Folding them down creates a cargo area of 63.3 cubic feet. Neither figure compares well with the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. 2021 GMC Terrain Exterior Lower trims of the GMC Terrain have simpler designs (but it could be argued, no less attractive), while the Denali is brighter and more ornate, from the grille and front bumper right back to the tail. Overall, the Terrain sports sharp lines, highly stylized headlights with LED accents, and the current trend of rear pillar treatment that gives the impression of a floating roof. The SLE and SLT trims are eligible for an Elevated Edition package that includes black-finished 19-inch alloy wheels and blacked-out exterior accents. 2021 GMC Terrain Standard Features At its entry level, which is the SL trim, the 2021 GMC Terrain has the turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. It's not eligible for all-wheel drive, the more powerful engine, nor several desirable options. Even so, standard equipment levels include 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry / ignition, leather-wrapped steering wheel, active noise cancellation, active grille shutters, an infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto smartphone integration, four USB ports, and the GMC Pro Safety package of driver assistance features (see the Safety Technology section below). 2021 GMC Terrain Options The SLE trim comes with a self-dimming rearview mirror and more available options. The SLT adds an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, power-adjustable / heated front seats, leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, and self-dimming side mirrors. Both trims may be ordered with the GMC Pro Safety Plus package (itemized in the Safety Technology section). GMC’s Denali contains virtually everything as standard that might be optional in the lower trims, such as Bose audio, driver’s-side memory settings, navigation, 360-degree camera system, and wireless charging. This trim also offers extras like heated outboard rear seats, ventilated front seats, a self-parking feature, and a premium suspension. 2021 GMC Terrain Engine A choice of two turbocharged gasoline engines endow the 2021 Terrain with either 170 horsepower or 252 horsepower. The 1.5 version runs on regular gasoline, but GMC recommends premium for the 2.0 engine. Both are linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is the standard setup, but all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional with either engine. All I want is for more people to realize what’s special about living with cats, ”he tells me when I visit his office. Over two decades, Hattori has written 14 books about raising and treating house cats. His fans point to his uncanny ability to interpret feline body language. It is Hattori’s opinion that every tail swish, whisker twitch, ear flick and miaow is a subtle telegraphing of an animal’s desires. Here’s one example: cats spend a lot of daytime hours asleep, he says, so don’t be alarmed by their frantic bursts of nocturnal activity. And another: when a cat rubs up against your leg, it's not necessarily scratching a hard-to-reach itch or showing affection. What you’re probably seeing is a form of territorial marking. And: when cats rub up against each other, in that friendly seeming way they do, they’re establishing mutual trust. If you think cats are hard to read, Hattori provides a useful chart of nine basic facial expressions (ranging from relaxed to aggressive) and 12 tail positions, each of which represents a mood (straight up for greetings, puffed to express anger, lowered for. caution). He also advises not to confuse a long, plaintive miaow (help!) With a brief one (hello!). And if you have the urge to sweep up your cat in a tight embrace, you might want to reconsider. Most cats are averse to being unable to make a quick escape. His recommends taking things slowly so that gradually you will be rewarded. The book includes diagrams for optimum room layouts depending on a cat's age, recommendations for how to safely evacuate with cats in the event of a natural disaster and warnings about potentially harmful or deadly substances, including aroma oils, Welsh onions, diet supplements and cold medicines . “If you know what to look for, you can begin to understand what puts your cat at ease,” Hattori says. "The best way to tell a cat is content is when it has a big appetite and a willingness to relax completely." In the book’s introduction, he writes: “The more you know about cats, the more you will be able to enjoy their company.” Hattori grew up in Nagoya, without pets. His exposure to cats came through his father, a vet and well-known judge on the international cat-show circuit. Occasionally, Hattori tagged along to shows, but he was always more interested in the wilder species he could find at his local zoo: lions, tigers, jaguars, snow leopards, caracals and servals. He spent hours watching them. “I remember being fascinated by their beauty,” he says. He often went to the zoo alone, sometimes missing school. At that point, he had already made up his mind to become a vet. His first experience of living with a cat came during his university years. “I watched a mother cat as she moved her kittens, one by one, across a car park,” he recalls. She left one kitten behind, a female gray and black tabby that Hattori took in and named Unya, a play on the Japanese word for miaow. “I don’t know whether the mother cat forgot her or decided that she couldn’t take care of them all. Maybe the kitten was a runt. ” Unya ended up living with him for 15 years. The more time he spent with her, the more he felt he was able to unlock her mysteries - and the more knowledge he accrued, the more he could pass on to others. But with its cat cafés and islands overrun with felines that have become big tourist draws, it is Japan that is leading the world in cat appreciation. Architecture firms offer services to customise homes with special features for your pets. There are even dedicated smartphone apps that keep you cat’s medical records safe, in case you need access to them on the go. The trend has done wonders for Hattori’s business. He isn’t the only vet in Japan to have a thriving secondary career as a pet guru. But few contemporaries can match his work ethic. His detractors say he spends too much time on evangelising and promoting products, and not enough on research that might improve the quality of his care. But Hattori makes no apologies for his high profile. “I’m not exactly getting rich doing this,” he says. In the past, Hattori has compared taking care of a cat to unrequited love. One minute you think the cat dislikes you, and the next it’s hovering nearby. You try to hold it and it squirms away. It frightens easily and it constantly keeps you guessing. You never really know whether it feels your affection or is capable of loving you back. How serious is Ford about electrifying the automobile? Very. By 2022, the Dearborn company will pour $ 11.5 billion into the development of 40 new BEVs, PHEVs and Hybrids. And the first of those pure battery-electric Ford models is a stunner. The new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, a 2-row SUV, promises a range of up to 300 miles. An electric Mustang SUV? As odd as it may seem, Ford has indeed built an electric Mustang SUV. Long story short, Ford didn’t want its first new-from-the-ground-up electric car (remember, the old Ranger EV and Focus EV were reconfigured gasoline models) to be just another bland 2-row crossover. So, after some soul searching, Ford decided to use the hallowed Mustang name on an all-new electric SUV that delivers what it calls “guilt-free performance.” Let’s take a closer look at this new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, which just made its world debut in Los Angeles and goes on sale in the fall of 2020 in all 50 U.S.A. states. Fast facts A key distinction: Ford considers the Mach-E to be a true Mustang SUV, not a Mustang-inspired SUV. Although Ford has an agreement with VW to share that company’s MEB electric vehicle platform, the new Mustang Mach-E is the first vehicle based on Ford’s Global Electric Architecture. This dedicated EV platform features a large lithium-ion battery pack that effectively serves as the floorboard between the front and rear axles. The design contributes to the Mach-E's low center of gravity for outstanding dynamics. It also creates a flat load floor. Ford says the Mach-E's standard 76-kWh battery will provide 240 miles of EPA range. A 99-kW extended-range battery pack will also be available, delivering over 300 miles of EPA range in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models. One thing’s guaranteed: This new electric Mustang SUV will be one fast pony. With the extended range battery, the all-wheel-drive Mach-E will produce 346 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Ford says it should hit 60 mph more quickly than the base Porsche Macan. Two special performance versions Although we don’t have specific numbers yet, two special performance versions of the Mustang Mach-E will be even quicker. The Mach-E GT, expected to arrive in the summer of 2021, should hit 60 mph in the less than 4 seconds, making it quicker than a Macan Turbo. A GT Performance Edition of the new Mach-E Mustang will rocket off the line even more quickly, hitting 60 mph in the mid-3-second range, a time comparable to the Porsche 911 GTS. Expect both high-performance Mach-E GTs to produce 459 horsepower and a whopping 612 lb-ft of torque. Ford produces the battery packs with pouch-style lithium-ion cells from LG Chem. The pouches are secured inside a waterproof case surrounded by crash-absorption material. For more performance and better charging, the battery packs are liquid-cooled. The standard pack, says Ford, has 288 cells. The larger battery pack, which weighs a substantial 1,280 pounds, has 376 individual cells. The RWD Ford Mustang Mach-E relies on a single 210-kilowatt electric motor mounted between the rear wheels. The AWD Mach-E also has a 50-kilowatt electric motor in front. The electric motors, which are oil-cooled for longevity, are also Ford developments. Even when equipped with the front motor, the Mach-E Mustang has a trunk in front, accessible under the long hood. Note: This plastic-lined front trunk (or “frunk”), which at 4.8 cubic feet is large enough for a compact roller bag, boasts a drain. This means it can be filled with ice and used as a cooler at your next tailgate party. It’s the same size in the RWD and AWD models. Interior The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a 5-seat SUV, and even though it has a sloping roofline the headroom in back is pretty good. We found it good enough for folks 6-foot-2 or shorter. Three across the rear bench will be tight, but there’s an overall feeling of spaciousness inside this Mustang SUV. The feeling is created in part by the long wheelbase and flat floor. A handy console on the front floorboard has an upper shelf for phone charging. There’s also an open lower area that can swallow a couple of purses with ease. To minimize clutter, Ford, in a manner not unlike Tesla, has employed a large 15.5-inch portrait-oriented control screen on the Mach-E’s center stack. Ford says this highly configurable touch screen is human-centric, not screen-centric, their way of saying the interface gets easier as it learns driver tastes and tendencies. While we hope this is true, we’re pleased to see a knurled metal volume knob at the bottom of the screen. The knob not only twists but offers a central push button and an outer ring “push” for additional functionality. We were allowed to play with the Mach-E's interface and find it as intuitive as modern smartphones. You can easily scroll up and down or left and right to access functions, and in many instances there are multiple options for changing a setting. For example, you can push a virtual “+” or “-” buttons to adjust cabin temperature, or you can drag a virtual slider up and down for the same effect. Ford even allows for the inevitable bumps that occur while operating a touchscreen when driving. If your finger slides a bit off a screen slider it can still operate said slider with up and down movement. We also like having a gauge cluster in the traditional spot, right in front of the driver. It’s digital and features all the requisite driving vitals. The dash sports a fabric-covered double-brow sound bar that spans the width of the cabin and evokes the early Mustangs. A nice touch, for sure. Styling Mustangs have always been about beautiful proportions, and the Mach-E succeeds. With its long hood and sloping roof, the Mach-E looks great, particularly in profile. Many styling elements are classic Mustang. These include a shark nose, a prominent brow, short overhangs, pulled-back A-pillars, and a sweeping roof, together with a long wheelbase, pronounced rear haunches, and tri-bar taillamps. The exterior door handles, of note, aren’t integrated into the Mach-E’s sheet metal as you might expect. Rather, each front door has a pushbutton release with a tiny L-shaped grab handle, while the rears also open with a pushbutton but no exterior handles. Of note: The Mach-E took shape at Dearborn Product Development Center, the same place where the Ford GT was designed. The design team worked quickly, and in close cooperation with the engineering team. After about six months of long 70-hour work weeks, the final design of the Mach-E Mustang took shape and was approved in December of 2017. Will there be a GT version of the Ford Mustang Mach-E? Yes, there will be a Mustang Mach-E GT. Actually, there will be two: a GT and a GT Performance Edition. Although the standard Ford Mustang Mach-E arrives in late 2020 as a 2021 model, the Mach-E GTs won’t arrive until the summer of 2021. Here’s what we know about the GTs: Both are AWD models with 210-kilowatt motors front and rear, and both are fitted with the larger battery and have an expected EPA range of about 240 miles. Both also have revised front styling with a pseudo grille in place of the Mach-E’s standard nose, which is a bit reminiscent of the Tesla Model 3’s but has a prominent galloping Mustang graphic to tell us differently. All Mustang Mach-Es, for the record, feature active shutters in the lower part of their nose for battery cooling. The Mustang Mach-E GTs will ride on 20-inch wheels. But only the Performance Edition is fitted with forged wheels and magneto-rheological MagneRide suspension. These adaptive shocks work amazingly well in varying conditions. All Mach-Es benefit from a low center of gravity and expected 50/50 weight distribution. The Mustang ride and handling team, in fact, handled the chassis development for the Mach-E. In doing so it became the first program to employ Ford's new racing simulator in North Carolina. Five trim levels Ford’s new electric SUV will come in five trims. Here’s what we know: The Mustang Mach-E Select is the entry-level Mach-E, a rear-drive model with a 266-horsepower electric motor making 317 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a standard battery pack offering a range of 230 miles. An AWD Mach-E Select is available; it has the standard battery and an expected EPA range of about 210 miles. Similarly, the Mustang Mach-E Premium, with more features but the same standard battery pack and 266-horsepower motor, expects a range of 230 miles in RWD form, or 210 with AWD. When equipped with the extended-range battery and a 290-horsepower electric motor, the RWD Mach-E Premium has an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles. An AWD Mach-E Premium, with 333 horsepower and the larger battery, has an estimated range of 270 miles. The Mustang Mach-E California Route 1 is available only one way: as a 290-horsepower RWD model with the extended-range battery and an estimated EPA range of 300 miles. Ford also offers a First Edition Mustang Mach-E. Although a Ford rep wouldn’t confirm how many First Editions would be sold, he did say it would be a 4-digit number (somewhere between 1,000 and 9,999, evidently). The First Edition is available one way: as an AWD model with the larger battery, 346 horsepower and a targeted EPA range of 270 miles. It’s available in three exterior colors, including Grabber Blue, and it also has red brake calipers. Last, Ford will sell a pair of Mustang Mach-E GT models: a standard GT and the GT Performance Edition. Both are AWD models with the extended-range battery, and both have a targeted EPA range of 250 miles. The standard GT is anything but, hitting 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. The Performance Edition does it in about 3.5. That’s quick! It also has the proven MagneRide dampers. One more reason we like the Mach-E GTs: They look much better from the front, thanks to what Ford designers call their “implied” grille. This pseudo grille looks 3-dimensional but it’s actually smooth and covered in a clear plastic. Ford says both versions of the Mustang Mach-E GT will go on sale in the summer of 2021. How much does the Ford Mustang Mach-E cost? The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has an attractive starting price of $ 43,895. And that’s before the federal EV tax credit of $ 7,500. The Mach-E Select has a range of 230 miles and doesn’t arrive until early 2021. If you want an AWD Select, that’s an extra $ 2,700. A Mach-E Premium, set to go on sale next fall, has an estimated list price of $ 50,600. Ordering a Premium with AWD adds $ 2,700. You can also order a RWD Premium with the extended-range battery for an extra $ 5,000. That’s the model with 300 miles of range. An AWD Premium with the larger battery pack is also available for $ 2,700 on top of that. It has a range of 270 miles. The Ford Mustang Mach-E California Route 1 model lists at about $ 52,400. It's a RWD model with the extended-range battery pack, so it has the full range of 300 miles. It will be available in early 2021. The limited First Edition Mach-E, an AWD model with red brake calipers and a max range of 270 miles, arrives in the fall of 2020, priced at an estimated $ 59,900. Last, there are the Mach-E GTs. Reservations require a $ 500 deposit and ordering open at Ford's website. Interested buyers can spec out their Mustang Mach-E just how they’d like it. And by now, Ford may even have final pricing. Will the world accept an electric Mustang SUV? A good question. This new Mustang EV may offend the Mustang faithful who feel a 4-door electric SUV is completely antithetical to an internal-combustion pony car. However, it's a bold move not without precedent. Remember when Porsche first built the Cayenne SUV? Fans of the 911 sports car were livid, claiming that an SUV polluted the brand. Now, though, strong SUV sales keep 911s rolling out the doors in Germany. Let’s also remember that Ford’s new electric SUV is far from a ponderous SUV of old. In contrast, it's quick and immediately responsive, with a low center of gravity that translates to minimal body roll while cornering. We haven’t yet driven the Mach-E yet, but we rode in a camouflaged pre-production version at the Jet Center in Hawthorne, California. In a brief 5-minute ride (on the street and through a slalom set up on an airport taxiway), we came away impressed with the new electric Mustang SUV. As with most EVs, the power is immediate, planting you in your seat with more force than you initially expect. And the electric Mustang SUV also stayed almost unnaturally flat in the slalom. All the while, the Mach-E was quiet inside. It’s so quiet, Ford pipes in a sound through the stereo to let us know that some motive force is at work here. Ford says the simulated powertrain sound, strangely not unlike that of a well-muffled V8, can be switched off. It isn’t even used at all in Whisper, one of the Mach-E Mustang's three standard drive modes that alter the steering and overall responsiveness of the vehicle. Three drive modes In Whisper, the Mach-E is super smooth, and the drive experience features effortless gliding or coasting when you lift off the accelerator. Regenerative braking is minimal. In Engaged, the most common drive mode, the simulated powertrain noise comes through at a seemingly natural level. A bit of regenerative braking makes the Mach-E feel more like a conventional car in lift-throttle situations. In Unbridled, the high-performance mode, the powertrain sounds are the loudest, but not to an objectionable level. Regenerative braking is strongest in Unbridled, which means the Mach E slows quite quickly with a lift of the pedal. Also worth noting: The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E doesn’t have handy brake paddles like those on the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV, which help you slow the vehicle with improved precision during one-pedal driving. In the Mach-E, when you need a bit more deceleration (say, for an upcoming red light), you can press the L button in the center of rotary shifter. This engages Low range and slows the electric Mustang SUV a bit more without touching the brake. Low range, for the record, is available in all three drive modes. But Low doesn’t provide any more regen braking than what the Unbridled mode already delivers. Where is the Ford Mustang Mach-E made? Ford builds the new electric Mustang SUV in Mexico. How long does it take to charge the electric Mustang SUV? All customers who buy a Mustang Mach-E won’t need to sign up for multiple charging networks because Ford supplies two years of free access via the FordPass Charging Network. For the record. The new Mach-E comes with an onboard charger and a conventional CCS (Combined Charging System) plug. The FordPass Charging Network provides access to Electrify America's 150-kW fast chargers. These clearly are the way to go, as they charge the Mach-E from 10 to 80 percent battery capacity in only 45 minutes. Put another way: The Mustang Mach-E can receive 47-mile bump in range in only 10 minutes with these fast chargers. With a Ford Connected Charge Station (available through Amazon) installed at your house, Ford says the Mach-E gets up to 32 miles of charge in one hour. This 48-amp station is an excellent option for those folks who plan to recharge overnight. Ford says most EV owners charge their cars at home. Using a 120-volt wall socket and the onboard charger, you’ll get only three miles of charge in an hour. Using a 240-volt outlet is much better, as the Mach-E receives up to 22 miles of charge in an hour. While that’s an improvement, it will still take a full night to recharge the Mach-E’s large battery pack using 240. Who are the electric Mustang SUV’s competitors? There's a reason Ford chose the Hawthorne Jet Center to reveal the Mach-E - it was a shot across the bow of Tesla, whose Design Center is adjacent to the site and was used earlier this year for the reveal of the all-electric Tesla Model Y. This electric SUV, with a starting price of $ 39,000 and a range of 300 miles hits 60 mph in a claimed 3.5 seconds. That sounds very comparable to the new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, but let's not forget that Volkswagen is also investing billions into new EVs, including a production version of the ID. While we all know which fuel won that fight, the new Ford Mustang Mach-E - more than 100 years later - reminds us that the battle is on again. And it may swing soon in electricity’s favor. Ford, for the record, has stated that it plans to be a carbon-neutral company by 2030. The new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is leading that charge as an EV that’s not just efficient, but also fast and fun to drive.
