  6. An Apple employee who led fellow workers in publicly sharing instances of what they called harassment and discrimination at the company said on Thursday that she had been fired. Janneke Parrish, an Apple program manager, said the iPhone maker informed her on Thursday that she had been terminated for deleting material on company equipment while she was under investigation over the leaking of a company town hall to media. She told Reuters she denies leaking. Parrish said she deleted apps that contained details of her finances and other personal information before handing her devices in to Apple as part of the probe. Parrish said she believes she was fired for her activism in the workplace. "To me, this seems clearly retaliatory for the fact that I was speaking out about abuses that have happened at my employer, pay equity and, generally, about our workplace conditions," she said. Apple said Friday it does not discuss specific employee matters. Apple has recently experienced other examples of employee unrest. Last month, two Apple employees told Reuters they had filed charges against the company with the National Labor Relations Board. The workers accused Apple of retaliation and halting discussion of pay among employees, among other allegations. Apple has said that it is "deeply committed to creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive workplace" and that it takes "all concerns" from employees seriously. US law protects the right of employees to openly discuss certain topics, including working conditions, discrimination and equal pay. Over the summer, current and former Apple employees began detailing on social media what they said were experiences of harassment and discrimination. Parrish and some colleagues began publishing the stories on social media and a publishing platform in a weekly digest titled '#AppleToo.' Parrish said she was careful to respect company rules and never shared information that she believed to be confidential. She said she continued to publish the '#AppleToo' digest after coming under investigation at the end of September. "If anything, it's made the importance of that work clearer than ever, when Apple's response to criticism is to start internal investigations into those that it wants to see gone," she said. "It's easier for them to terminate people than it is for them to actually listen."
  7. The release of Windows 11 has come and gone, but already there’s feature wishes for future releases of the newest Windows upgrade. One in particular from me is for 3D Pinball to make a return. As a child, one of the primary reasons for using the family computer would be to see what search engines would bring in the way of games. While there were random Flash games of British Soaps and non-sanctioned Matrix games to play online, Windows itself had its fair share of games pre-installed. One from Windows XP was 3D Pinball, where hours would easily be wasted in achieving a high score. With a programmer now having reverse-engineered the game to work on web browsers, and even Sony’s PlayStation Vita, it’s time to see the game return for Windows 11. Check out all the best PC games Android apps spotted in latest Windows 11 build We'll show you how to build a PC Playing 3D Pinball on an iPad Steve Jobs once said that having iTunes on Windows was akin to having a glass of water in hell, and while this quote is harsh in retrospect, playing 3D Pinball on an iPad Pro feels strange. It’s similar to playing a Sonic game on a Nintendo console, or using Apple Music on a Google Pixel device. Using the Z and / keys for the flippers, alongside the spacebar for launching the ball instantly takes you back to Windows XP. The sounds and graphics are intact, and you can even play 3D Pinball on your smartphone if you wish. Using this in Windows 11, within a web browser, instantly takes you back to that time as well, and there are ways of using it as its own app as well. Playing 3D Pinball on a laptop with a touch screen is also possible, but a full screen mode would be much better for this orientation. There are plans for new music tracks, multi-ball and other features to come soon, but as it stands, you’re at risk of losing many hours already to this new way of playing 3D Pinball, as I already have in iPadOS 15 and Windows 11. Time for a remake in Fluent Design We’re in an age where remakes are a valuable commodity in the games industry. Pokémon, Resident Evil and other franchises have already seen critically acclaimed remakes. They tap into the nostalgia associated with our childhood years but updated for modern times with improved graphics and gameplay, and 3D Pinball can fit that brief perfectly. While there were other games included in Windows across the years, such as Minesweeper and Solitaire, 3D Pinball brought a competitiveness to the family PC. There was a thrill about beating the high scores of your relatives with every visit you made to them once a week. A new 3D Pinball game that’s built from the ground up in Windows 11 could add to the mantra that Microsoft has about this release; that it’s an upgrade meant for everyone. With a new focus on gaming thanks to HDR and the Xbox app being heavily featured for the Windows upgrade, a new 3D Pinball game with online multiplayer and leaderboards, alongside native touch-support for those with laptops that have this feature, could be a big temptation to many who are still waiting to update to Windows 11. 8. Intel formally confirmed that select 4th Generation Xeon Scalable 'Sapphire Rapids' processors will feature on-package HBM memory late last year, but the company has never demonstrated an actual CPU equipped with HBM or revealed its DRAM configuration. At the International Symposium on Microelectronics hosted by IMAPS earlier this week, the company finally showcased the processor with HBM and confirmed its multi-chiplet design. While Intel confirmed on numerous occasions that Sapphire Rapids processors will support HBM (presumably HBM2E) and DDR5 memory and will be able to use HBM either with or without main DDR5 memory, it never showcased an actual HBM-equipped CPU, until this week (thanks to the picture published by Tom Wassick/@wassickt). As it turns out, each of four Sapphire Rapids chiplets has two HBM memory stacks that use two 1024-bit interfaces (i.e., a 2048-bit memory bus). Formally, JEDEC’s HBM2E specification tops at a 3.2 GT/s data transfer rate, but last year SK Hynix started to mass-produce 16GB 1024-pin known-good stacked dies (KGSDs) rated for a 3.6 GT/s operation. If Intel opts to use such KGSDs, HBM2E memory will provide Sapphire Rapids CPU a whopping 3.68 TB/s peak memory bandwidth (or 921.6 GB/s per die), but only for 128GB of memory. By contrast, SPR's eight DDR5-4800 memory channels supporting one module per channel and offering 307.2 GB/s will support at least 4TB of memory using Samsung's recently announced 512GB DDR5 RDIMM modules. It is also noteworthy the HBM-equipped Sapphire Rapids comes in a large BGA form-factor and will be soldered directly to the motherboard. This is not particularly surprising as Intel's LGA4677 form-factor is pretty narrow and the CPU does not have enough space on its package for HBM stacks. Furthermore, processors that require a very high-performance memory subsystem like HBM tend to feature loads of cores that work at high clocks and feature a very high TDP. Keeping in mind that HBM stacks are also power-hungry, it may not be easy to develop a socket that would feed an HBM-equipped beast. Therefore, it looks like HBM-equipped SPRs will only be offered to select clients (just like Intel's Xeon Scalable 9200 CPUs with up to 56 cores) and will mostly be aimed at supercomputers. Another thing to note is that the shape of the SPR chiplets on the image are rectangular rather than square (as on early images of Sapphire Rapids in LGA4677 packaging). The author of the image said that it comes from an Intel chart "given by an Intel employee and labeled SPR, and verbally noted as Sapphire Rapids." That said, it looks like HBM-supporting Sapphire Rapids CPU might have a different chiplet configuration than regular SPR processors (at the end of the day, regular Xeon Scalable CPUs do not need an HBM interface that takes die space). Intel's Sapphire Rapids processors will feature a host of new technologies, including PCIe Gen 5 support with CXL 1.1 protocol for accelerators on top, a hybrid memory subsystem supporting DDR5 and HBM, Intel’s Advanced Matrix Extensions (AMX) as well as AVX512_BF16 and AVX512_VP2INTERSECT instructions designed for datacenter and supercomputer workloads, and Intel's Data Streaming Accelerator (DSA) technology, just to name a few. Earlier this year we learned that Intel's Sapphire Rapids uses a a multi-chip package with EMIB interconnects between the die, unlike its predecessors that are monolithic. While the number of cores is something that depends on yield and power (some reports indicate that SPR will feature up to 56 active cores, but the actual chiplets may carry as many as 80 cores), it is evident that the 4th Generation Xeon Scalable will be the first to use Intel's latest packaging technologies and design paradigm.

  14. Amazon's audiobook service Audible and phone apps for reading the holy books of Islam and Christianity have disappeared from the Apple store in mainland China, the latest examples of the impact of the country's tightened rules for internet firms. Audible said Friday that it removed its app from the Apple store in mainland China last month “due to permit requirements." The makers of apps for reading and listening to the Quran and Bible say their apps have also been removed from Apple's China-based store at the government's request. Apple didn't return requests for comment Friday. A spokesperson for China's embassy in the US declined to speak about specific app removals but said the Chinese government has “always encouraged and supported the development of the Internet." “At the same time, the development of the Internet in China must also comply with Chinese laws and regulations," said an emailed statement from Liu Pengyu. China's government has long sought to control the flow of information online, but is increasingly stepping up its enforcement of the internet sector in other ways, making it hard to determine the causes for a particular app's removal. Chinese regulators this year have sought to strengthen data privacy restrictions and limit how much time children can play video games. They are also exerting greater control over the algorithms used by tech firms to personalize and recommend content. The po[CENSORED]r US language-learning app Duolingo disappeared from Apple's China store over the summer, as have many video game apps. What appears to link Audible with the religious apps is that all were recently notified of permit requirements for published content. Pakistan Data Management Services, which makes the Quran Majeed app, said it is awaiting more information from China's internet authority about how it can be restored. The app has nearly 1 million users in China and about 40 million worldwide, said the Karachi-based company. Those who had already downloaded the app can still use it, said Hasan Shafiq Ahmed, the company's head of growth and relationships. “We are looking to figure out what documentation is needed to get approval from Chinese authorities so the app can be restored," he said in an email. The maker of a Bible app said it removed it from the Apple store in China after learning from Apple's App Store review process that it needed special permission to distribute an app with “book or magazine content." Olive Tree Bible Software, based in Spokane, Washington, said it's now reviewing the requirements to obtain the necessary permit “with the hope that we can restore our app to China's App Store and continue to distribute the Bible worldwide." The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned Apple's actions, saying the company was enabling China's religious persecution of Muslims and others. “This decision must be reversed," said a statement from CAIR's national deputy director, Edward Ahmed Mitchell. “If American corporations don't grow a spine and stand up to China right now, they risk spending the next century subservient to the whims of a fascist superpower.” The removals were first detected this week by watchdog website AppleCensorship, which monitors Apple's app store to detect when apps have been blocked, especially in China and other countries with authoritarian governments. This week, Microsoft said that it would shut down its main LinkedIn service in China later this year, citing a “significantly more challenging operating environment and greater compliance requirements in China.” Unlike LinkedIn, which has been offering a specialized Chinese service since 2014, Amazon-owned Audible said it does not have a dedicated service for customers in China.
  15. Google has further postponed the retirement of Chrome apps, which are already on extended life support. Chrome apps, not to be confused with Chrome browser extensions, were Google’s idea of delivering browser-based apps that installed inside Chrome and looked and functioned like regular desktop apps. Chrome apps never took off thanks to the evolution of web standards and platforms such as progressive web apps (PWA), which rendered Chrome apps obsolete. Here’s a list of the best online collaboration tools These are the best productivity apps Also check our roundup of the best small business software However, Chrome apps seem to have found their stride with Chrome OS’ Enterprise and Education customers, because of whom Google has been forced to delay the retirement process for several more years. “Based on feedback from our Enterprise and Education customers and partners, we have made the decision to extend Chrome app support for those users on Chrome OS until at least January 2025,” notes Google. Prolonging the inevitable Google first announced its decision to terminate Chrome apps for Windows, Linux and macOS back in 2016. Back then it admitted that the combined user base of Chrome apps on these platforms was about 1%. Since then, the evolution of web standards and development of powerful new and open APIs have enabled developers to build robust PWAs that work seamlessly across platforms and browsers, validating Google’s decision to pull the plug on Chrome apps. Even as it extends the timeline for select customers to run Chrome apps on Chrome OS, Google asserts that PWAs are the way of the future. “There is a growing ecosystem of powerful desktop web apps & PWAs, from advanced graphics products like Adobe Spark to engaging media apps like YouTube TV to productivity and collaboration apps like Zoom,” said Google, further encouraging Chrome app developers to migrate to PWAs “as soon as possible.” These are the best project management software
  16. Microsoft is quickly iterating with its newly launched Windows 11 operating system, including Build 2200.282, which just hit the Beta and Release Preview Channels. The most significant improvement with this release is the inclusion of Microsoft’s fix for L3 cache latency issues on AMD Ryzen processors, many of which are among the best CPUS. Microsoft indicated in today’s release notes that “we fixed an L3 caching issue that might affect performance in some applications on devices that have AMD Ryzen processors after upgrading to Windows 11 (original release).” As we reported earlier this week, L3 latency increased by up to 6X in Windows 11 compared to the same system running Windows 10. This bug resulted in up to a 7.5% performance hit for our Ryzen 5900X test rig in Project Cars 3 while running Windows 11. It should be noted that Microsoft said that eSports titles could see up to a 15 percent hit to performance, although we didn’t witness such a significant disparity in our testing. The other performance-robbing bug affecting Ryzen processors in Windows 11 has not been officially addressed with a patch. AMD explained last week that Windows 11 isn’t properly scheduling “preferred” cores on Ryzen processors. “Applications sensitive to the performance of one or a few CPU threads may exhibit reduced performance,” said AMD at the time. The company will issue a separate software update to address this bug later in October. Windows 11 Build 2200.282 also includes dozens of smaller fixes to other critical OS functions, including the Start Menu, PowerShell, Windows Remote Management, Server Manager and more. Given that Windows 11 recently jumped out of the gate, it’s understandable that many features are being tweaked to improve performance, fix bugs and address growing user feedback.

  21. WhatsApp on Thursday started rolling out end-to-end encryption for backups stored on Google Drive and iCloud. The rollout has started months after the Facebook-owned company tested the update internally. Last month, WhatsApp announced that it would start rolling out end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for Android and iOS users. The opt-in feature will help users protect their backups from being accessed by third parties including cloud storage providers such as Google and Apple. It is also claimed to protect chat history stored in backups from WhatsApp. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the rollout of end-to-end encryption for cloud backups through a post on his page. The feature will be rolled out globally for both Android and iOS users in a gradual manner to provide an additional layer of protection to backups stored in the cloud. Since 2016, WhatsApp has provided end-to-end encryption by default for messages circulating on its platform. The company claims that the advanced encryption protects over 100 billion messages a day as they travel between more than two billion users globally. WhatsApp users, however, also found the need for the same level of encryption for chat history and other content backed up in the cloud that is available on the app. That resulted in the launch of end-to-end encryption for cloud backups. “If someone chooses to backup their chat history with end-to-end encryption, it will be accessible only to them, and no one will be able to unlock their backup, not even WhatsApp. Neither WhatsApp nor the backup service provider (like Apple) will be able to access their end-to-end encryption key or their end-to-end encrypted backup,” the company said. How to enable end-to-end encryption for WhatsApp backups WhatsApp is currently rolling out end-to-end encryption for cloud backups on both Android and iOS devices. Make sure that you are on the latest version of WhatsApp to get the update. Unlike the existing end-to-end encryption that is available by default, you need to manually enable end-to-end encryption for cloud backups. You can do so by going to Settings > Chats > Chat Backups > End-to-End Encrypted Backups and then follow the prompts on the screen. You will be required to create a password for your backup. Alternatively, you can use a 64-bit encryption key. Once the on-screen steps are completed, tap Done and wait for WhatsApp to prepare your end-to-end encrypted backup. You might need to connect your phone to a power source as the encryption will require some local resources of the device. It is important to note that you won't be able to restore your end-to-end encrypted backup if you forget your password or key.
