You can now purchase a Windows 11 license and download it directly from the Microsoft website, instead of upgrading from a version of Windows 10, the company has confirmed. According to PCMag(opens in new tab), the change appears to have occured at some point in May 2022, however a lack of any press release or communication from Microsoft meant this change slipped through the net. For many PC users, Windows 11 will already come installed or will be available as an upgrade for their existing machines, and has been since its launch in October 2021, but DIY PC builders have (up until recently) had to download a version of Windows 10, before upgrading from within that OS. Download Windows 11 from Microsoft A Windows 11 Home download can be added to an online cart and purchased(opens in new tab) for $139 (£119.99), which represents no price increase over the equivalent Home version of Windows 10. At first, it appears that there’s no Pro version of the operating system, however this is found under another page(opens in new tab) on the Microosft website. Windows 11 Pro is available for $199.99 (£219.99) - the same price as Windows 10 Pro. The ability to purchase a Windows 11 license should save PC builders time, who will no longer need to get it via the previous OS. A processing speed of at least 1GHz, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a minimum nine-inch 720p display are some of the key requirements(opens in new tab) for DIYers to install Windows 11. Windows 11 update 22H2 also brings with it greater control over security measures and offers more protection against malware. We confirmed with a Microsoft store representative that the current downloads run on build number 21H2, and users should receive a notification when 22H2 is ready to download

Users of 32-bit Linux distributions have another reason to consider an upgrade following the news that their kernels will not be patched against the latest speculative execution attack, known as Retbleed. The attack, classified as CVE-2022-29900 and CVE-2022-29901, has led to a number of Linux patches, according to reporting from Phoronix. A variant of Spectre, Retbleed exploits one of the mitigations against such attacks, and affects particular x86-64 (AMD Zen 1/1+/2 and Intel Core 6th through 8th Gen). It has been addressed in a 64-bit Linux kernel update (and Windows users should already have received mitigations). But the amount of work involved means that the 32-bit Linux kernel won’t be getting the same treatment. The attack exploits retpolines, a mitigation against Spectre introduced in 2018 that’s a portmanteau word of ‘return’ and ‘trampoline’. The original attack used indirect branches in a processor’s speculative execution system to steal information from the system memory through branch mispredictions leaking data. But retpolines replaced these branches with a return that uses a never-executed infinite loop to prevent a processor from speculating on the target of an indirect jump. These retpolines can now be bypassed by the new exploit, leading to arbitrary information leaking from a computer’s memory. While at least one proof-of-concept exploit using Retbleed has been coded, it’s unknown if the exploit is at large on the internet. Responding to queries on the lore.kernel.org mailing list, Intel’s Pawan Gupta wrote: "Intel is not aware of production environments that use 32-bit mode on Skylake-gen CPUs. So this should not be a concern.” His colleague Peter Zijlstra added: "Yeah, so far nobody cared to fix 32-bit. If someone *realllllly* cares and wants to put the effort in I suppose I'll review the patches, but seriously, you shouldn't be running 32-bit kernels on Skylake / Zen based systems, that's just silly." So the message is clear: If you’re running a 32-bit Linux distro on a Skylake-vintage CPU, stop it immediately and upgrade to 64bit.

In 2013, Pink was named Woman of the Year by Billboard magazine. His father is Catholic, and his mother is Jewish. Pink self-identifies as a Jew. Born into a musical family, at the age of thirteen she was already dancing and participating as a support singer in shows in her city. The following year, a local DJ allowed her to sing a song every Friday on stage. On one of these nights, Pink was spotted by an executive at the MCA label, who took her, initially to an R&B group called Basic Instinc, and then to another, all-female group, The Choice. The experiments didn't work out, but P!nk impressed the bosses of the label, such as the legendary Babyface. She had to make a choice that, according to her, was very complicated, because at the same time she wanted to remain in her group, with two other girls , she wanted to make her career grow. Pink claims that her parents fought a lot when she was young, she took refuge in bars with friends and used drugs and drinks. At fifteen she nearly overdosed. The stage name "Pink" is an allusion to the character Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs, the third film by director Quentin Tarantino, which she watched with her friends. Each of them was a character (Mr. Orange, for example). Pink met professional motocross racer Carey Hart at the X Games in Philadelphia in 2001. After a brief split in 2003, Pink proposed to Hart in June 2005 during the Mammoth Lakes motocross race, placing the text "Will you marry me?" at her departure point. They later got married in Costa Rica on January 7, 2006. After months of speculation, Pink announced in February 2008 that she and Hart were splitting up. Then Hart appeared in the video for her 2008 song "So What", in which they talk about separation and divorce. The couple participated in marriage counseling during their separation in hopes of being able to reconcile. In February 2010, Pink confirmed that she and Hart were back together and announced in November 2010 that they were expecting their first child. On June 2, 2011, Pink gave birth to the couple's daughter, Willow Sage Hart. In 2016, Pink released the Alice Through the Looking Glass soundtrack, in a well-thought-out performance for the singer's style. Later, Pink appeared with her pregnancy well advanced to the surprise of the fans, which justifies the presentation contained months before, in which she was already pregnant. On December 16, 2016, Jameson Moon Hart was born, the second child of Pink and Carey. Pink also had her moment in the film world. In the Catacombs, Pink plays Carolyn, the sister of Victoria (Shannyn Sossamon). They go to a rave under Paris, in the catacombs. There, Carolyn tells stories of a man who grew up down there under rituals and curses, being 'crowned' with a goat mask. This one came to torment Victoria, sensitive and easily frightened. The film did not have a very good review. Both the picture quality, soundtrack and the cast were heavily criticized.

Google has revealed more on Carbon, a new programming language that the company believes could be the successor to C++. Programming languages are constantly improving and developing, and have been replaced in recent years with models that are even easier to use. Apple’s own Swift language has opened up several possibilities to the less experienced that its predecessor, Objective-C, for example. Many have dubbed Rust a C++ successor, however speaking at a recent event, Google Principal Software Engineer Chandler Carruth explained how the programming language that was initially a Mozilla product doesn’t have the same “bi-directional interoperability” as other tools, which introduces a type of ‘language barrier’ when ‘translating’ between different programming language. Move from C++ to Carbon As such, the newly announced Carbon should be interoperable with the po[CENSORED]r C++ code, however for users looking to make the full switch, the migration should be fairly easy. For those unsure about a full changeover, Carruth delved into more detail about some of the reasons why Carbon should be considered a powerful successor to the C++ language, including simpler grammar and smoother API imports. There are further benefits that extend beyond Carbon’s language, including ethical motives like the accessibility and inclusivity of the project’s culture. The Carbon family is largely made up of Google employees, but not exclusively so. Having piggybacked on the successes of the tech giant, the Carbon team says that it need to be “an independent and community drive project” for it to be successful. Currently, the Carbon programming language is just an experiment. Its source code can be downloaded for you to try already, or you can choose to experiment with it from inside your browser with the Compiler Explorer web app.

A landmark piece of computing history popped up in an online auction earlier this week. For sale as Lot #5006(opens in new tab) on RR Auctions is a prototype Apple Computer A, claimed to have been assembled by nonother than Steve Wozniak and owned by Steve Jobs. If that isn’t a fine enough pedigree to excite bidders, there is photographic evidence that this is the production prototype for the Apple 1 and was instrumental in securing Apple’s first ‘big’ order; selling 50 pre-assembled Apple 1s to The Byte Shop in Mountain View, California. Bidding for the PCB pictured above and below is at $278,005 at the time of writing and is expected to exceed $500,000 by the auction's end (August 19). The PCB wasn’t looked after carefully by owner Steve Jobs. After securing the landmark order, it is thought to have been cast aside at the Apple Garage for several years before Jobs gifted it to the current owner approximately 30 years ago. Evidence of its mistreatment are the breaks and cracks in the PCB and that several chips and capacitors are no longer in place, presumably donated to production computers or subsequent projects in the garage. In addition, photos of the working example show that several large orange Sprague Atom capacitors are missing from the top right of the layout. The CPU is missing too. As this is the prototype of the Apple 1, we know it should have featured an MOS 6502 CPU @ 1 MHz, 40 x 24 character display output, 4 KB of RAM, expandable to 8 KB or 48 KB using expansion cards, and 456 KB of storage (tape). However, as a prototype, this Apple Computer A was a bit more flexible, as the auction info says it could have run using a socketed Motorola 6800 processor instead of the MOS 6502. Several other differences exist between this prototype and the first 50 shipped Apple 1 computers. RR Auctions says that this model is the only one soldered by Woz using his characteristic ‘three-handed' technique. The auction listing implies that the first batch of Apple 1 machines was a product of $40 or fewer components, but with the value added by the assembly, software, and so on, plus profit, The Byte Shop sold them for $666.66 a machine. Would it be wrong to repair it and get it back into working order? Its condition is woeful, and it isn’t a very handsome PCB. Nevertheless, we think the machine's destiny is behind glass and kept in its current state of disrepair by a collector or corporation.
