Members of the public helped at the scene of the crash, police said By Amy Phipps BBC News A man and two young children have been killed in a crash involving a car and a lorry. Police said they were called to a report of the collision on the A5 in Hinckley, Leicestershire, at about 16:25 BST on Friday. The man, who was in his 30s, was driving the car. The children, aged nine and four, were his passengers. A woman, who was also a passenger in the car, is in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Police said the driver of the lorry was not seriously injured.The man and the nine-year-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, who is in her 30s, and the four-year-old girl were taken to hospital but the girl died a short time later. 'Extremely distressing' West Midlands Ambulance Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were all called to the scene of the crash. The road was closed for several hours but reopened at about 00:25, Leicestershire Police said officers were carrying out an investigation to establish the full circumstances of the crash. Det Con Anna Andrew said: "Emergency services attended the scene and we know members of the public also assisted at the scene when the collision happened. "Thank you to everyone who responded and helped in these devastating and extremely distressing circumstances." Mick Titcombe has taken part in many animal rescue including this one where a horse was stuck in water A firefighter has been awarded a grant to research more effective ways of rescuing animals from water. The Churchill Fellowship grant will enable Mick Titcombe, from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, to travel to Australia and the USA to meet animal rescue experts. "We need to integrate animal water rescue into our national operational guidance and increase our capability and knowledge," he said. He has been a firefighter for 25 years. Mr Titcombe is a watch commander and specialist training and national resilience co-ordinator with the Northamptonshire service.For 19 years he worked at Wellingborough Fire Station, where some of the service's specialist animal and water rescue equipment is based, and is now in the training department.Mick Titcombe is a watch commander and specialist training and national resilience co-ordinator at Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service The grant will enable him to spend 20 days in Australia, where responders have had to deal with a number of flooding disasters. "The flooding experienced in the UK in recent years has already demonstrated the potential disruption we face in a changing climate," Mr Titcombe said. Northamptonshire's Acting Chief Fire Officer, Simon Tuhill, said Mr Titcombe had "recognised a gap in our knowledge" and developed a proposal with the potential to improve the "operational response to animal rescues". While PC players have been enjoying Baldur’s Gate 3 since early August, the game finally launched on PS5 yesterday, so how’s the game hold up on consoles? Well, there’s some good news and bad news. According to the tech heads at Digital Foundry, the PS5 version of BG3 offers impressive visual quality, but performance, already a bit of an issue on PC, is even more problematic on console. You can check out the full Digital Foundry video breakdown below if you have around 15 minutes to spare, or you can scroll down for our recap of the salient points.Ah, but the performance figures listed above only apply to the early game. As players have discovered on PC, Baldur’s Gate 3 has some performance issues in Act 3, particularly in areas with lots of NPCs. Well, these problems persist on the PS5, with the game dropping to as low as 20fps in Act 3. Interestingly, the performance seems roughly the same regardless of whether the game is being played in Quality or Performance mode, implying that a CPU bottleneck is to blame. As for split-screen, it seems to hold up fairly well. It essentially forces you into Quality mode, limiting performance to 30fps and splitting the resolution in half, offering two 1280x1440p screens. Of course, the same Act 3 performance issues seen in single-player pop up during split-screen action. Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5 has essentially two visual modes, which you can choose between by setting Performance on or off. The non-Performance (we’ll call it Quality) mode offers a locked 1440p and 30fps, while Performance mode is upsampled using FSR 2 or some other tech from around 960p and runs at 60fps. As is increasingly becoming the case on current-gen consoles, Quality mode is actually the more consistent performer, maintaining a consistent 30fps, while Performance mode will occasionally drop frames (although it still stays in the mid-to-high 50fps range most of the time). What do you see when you look at this photo? The image appears to show an enormous, scary face suddenly emerging from the ocean. But what you're actually looking at is a stargazer fish which has buried itself in the sandy floor of the Mediterranean. The photo was taken by Pietro Formis from Italy and is among several to be highly commended in this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Mr Formis explained that he doesn't normally take photos for competitions. He submitted this image because he "liked it a lot" but didn't expect to win any commendation.I'm super happy and I'm counting the days for the ceremony. I think that I will see most of my, I will say colleagues, but they are my heroes and the top of photography so I can't describe how happy I am," Mr Formis said. The overall winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition will be announced at an awards ceremony on 10 October. The annual Natural History Museum exhibition showcasing 100 photographs chosen from the thousands that entered the competition will open the following Friday, 13 October, and then as usual, will then go on tour around the world. They are also predators, and in order to catch their prey they hide under sand with only their eyes and mouth visible - that's what you can see in Mr Formis' photo. "To me it looks like a voodoo mask or a human face and those are species that I like most, the species that have a human-like face, with big eyes and big mouth. It's a beautiful animal," Mr Formis said. Mr Formis explained that by using concentrated light from a flash, a slow shutter speed and deliberate movement he managed to photograph the stargazer almost illuminated in the clear blue water. "For me it's like a waterfall and then from behind you see this scary face. I took a few different images, but this one I prefer," he said. Underwater photography has almost become an "obsession" for Mr Formis since his father - also a photographer - took him diving and changed his life. The plaques come 41 years after the North Yorkshire Police officers died while on duty By Hayley Coyle BBC News Memorials have been unveiled for two police officers shot dead by a multiple murderer in North Yorkshire. PC David Haigh and Sgt David Winter were both murdered by Barry Prudom in 1982, resulting in the biggest manhunt in British police history. To mark the officers' bravery, the Police Memorial Trust has installed two marble plaques. PC Haigh's memorial is at Norwood Edge, near where he died, and Sgt Winter's is in Malton.PC David Haigh was gunned down by Barry Prudom after encountering him near Norwood Edge Annette Jukes, PC Haigh's widow, told the BBC: "It's a beautiful setting for us to reflect."PC Haigh was also survived by his three sons Carl, Michael and Richard who were 11, eight and three at the time of their father's death. PC Haigh, 29, was delivering a summons to a poacher in Washburn Valley on 17 June when it is believed he encountered "gun-obsessed" Prudom at Norwood Edge.Sgt David Winter was killed by Prudom after he confronted him in Old Malton His body was later found in his patrol car with a single gunshot wound to the head after he failed to respond to a colleague's radio call. Afterwards Prudom, an electrician from Leeds, stormed the house of a farmer and his wife in Girton, Nottinghamshire, and shot them both in the head. The woman survived but was left permanently brain damaged, according to reports. The killings resulted in a 17-day manhunt involving nearly 1,000 armed police.An officer searching for killer Barry Prudom during the manhunt in 1982 During the search, Sgt Winter, 31, approached Prudom in Old Malton on 28 June, and he too was shot dead. During Sgt Winter's plaque unveiling, Det Supt Graeme Wright of North Yorkshire Police said: "Malton felt his loss painfully. "It's vital we demonstrate to our colleagues that we remember those who have fallen." Prudom was an expert in survival from his time in the Territorial SAS. But he was kicked out of the force for being "temperamentally unsuitable", according to historic BBC news reports. Julie Fujishima resigned from Johnny and Associates on Thursday during a public apology to her uncle's victims. Her departure comes a week after investigators found Kitagawa abused hundreds of boys and young men over six decades, as head of the boyband agency. A BBC documentary this year about the abuse led more victims to come forward. Johnny Kitagawa died in 2019, having always denied wrongdoing. He never faced charges.On Thursday, his niece and outgoing chief executive Ms Fujishima acknowledged his abuse for the first time. "Both the agency itself and I myself as a person recognise that sex abuse by Johnny Kitagawa took place," she said. "I apologise to his victims from the bottom of my heart." Local media showed some of the victims watching the news conference, some looking visibly angry. The scandal is parallel in its scale and impact on the industry to that of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein who was convicted of rape and sexual assault. Kitagawa was arguably the most influential and powerful figure in Japan's entertainment industry. His agency was the gateway to stardom for many young men through the years. Several victims told the BBC's documentary Predator: The Secret Scandal of J-Pop that they thought their careers would be harmed if they did not comply with Kitagawa's sexual demands.There was talk at the press conference of structural change and many observers believe the organisation is likely to make amends - but it's unclear what that change would look like and how the agency's talents would be managed and protected. There are also big questions about the future of Johnny and Associates as a brand that has been synonymous with fame and glamour, and which has now been so badly and so publicly disgraced.
