  1. ISLAMABAD: Responding to Joint Investigation Team's letter, Prince Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al-Thani has invited the team to visit Qatar in order to record his statement. According to the Geo News, the prince has sent a letter to the JIT, asking for names of the visiting members and the the date they intend to make the visit. Hussain Nawaz's Doha Visit Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim's response came a day after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s elder son dashed to Doha on Thursday. In what appears to be a last ditch effort by the Sharifs’ family to convince the Qatri prince, Hussain Nawaz spent some five hours in Doha on July 6. Hussain Nawaz met some important friends. But he did not meet Qatri Prince Hammad bin Jasim over in Doha,” a close aide of Sharifs’ family told The News. From Doha, Hussain landed in London and will most probably return to Pakistan on coming Sunday. Hussain will be meeting some close friends in London in coming two days, he added. Investigation not verification The JIT conveyed to the Qatari prince that the JIT intends to go beyond mere verification of Thani’s letters. It said, “The scope and remit of the investigation and recording of your statement as intended and sought by the JIT is therefore materially broader and different than that which has been offered in your latest letter. This is also self evident from the contents of our letter dated 22-6-2017.” On the question of jurisdiction as was raised by the Qatari prince in his letter written to the JIT, the Team responded that the Al-Thani has accepted the jurisdiction of Supreme Court of Pakistan as well as that of the JIT by voluntarily signing and providing letters dated 5-11-2016 and 22-12-2016 for submission before the SC in support of the replies and stance adopted by Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz. “You have already formally and irrevocably accepted and submitted to the jurisdiction of the honourable Supreme Court of Pakistan and concomitantly the jurisdiction of the JIT,” the JIT wrote to the Qatari Prince, adding, “As a corollary, you have also accepted extension and application of the relevant laws of Pakistan. This conclusion flows inevitably not only from your aforementioned acts and conduct but is further reinforced by the contents of both of you aforementioned letters of 5-11-2016 and 22-12-2016, which have been formally placed on the record of the Supreme Court.” Upset with the delay of probing the Qatari prince, the JIT wrote, “The delay in receipt of your replies has led to unnecessary loss of the very limited time granted to the JIT by the honourable Supreme Court of Pakistan to complete its investigation and report thereon. We, therefore, again request you to kindly respond via facsimile transmission or email which may be followed up by couriering signed originals.” The Qatari Prince is told, “Submission to jurisdiction once conceded or volunteered cannot subsequently be unilaterally withdrawn. Moreover, please also note that should your Excellency now seek to assert this position, it will impact on the admissibility, evidentiary, probative value and standing of the contents of your letters dated 5-11-2016 and 22-12-2016, which otherwise remain unsubstantiated.” The JIT told the Qatari Prince that it is also unable to provide the confirmation regarding his appearance before any court of law or tribunal for any purpose because “a) the JIT, which has been constituted for a specific investigative purpose is not legally competent nor has the jurisdiction to provide such an all encompassing confirmation, and (b) without prejudice to the foregoing, for your guidance and information, kindly take note that, should the SC pass any order(s) for the filing of the criminal reference against any person(s) connected with alleged crime under NAB law, the possibility of your Excellency being required to appear before the concerned accountability court undertaking the trial of the alleged offences cannot be ruled out.” However, the JIT added, as clarified above this could be a matter for the court of competent jurisdiction and the prosecution and defence in any such trial. The JIT cannot therefore furnish any definitive confirmation in this regard, nor it would be appropriate or within its remit to do so. With reference to the Prince Al-Thani’s letter 22-6-2017 to meet the JIT in Doha in order to verify in person the contents of both of his letters submitted to the JIT, the JIT said, “The JIT originally requested you to make it contingent to record your statement before it through letter dated 13-5-2017. This was followed up by further requests through its letters of 24-5-2017 and 22-6-2017. The stated purpose and background was to enable the JIT to verify and investigate the contents of your letters dated 5-11-2016 and 22-12-2016, which have been submitted with your expressed acquiesce by the respondents No 7 and 8 before the SC. In these circumstances, we respectfully again urge you to kindly clarify your position vis a vis the matters explained above by return fax or by return email, failing which in view of the impending terminal date for submission of its final report to the SC, the JIT shall proceed further without any further recourse to your Excellency and shall report accordingly to the SC.”
  2. After spending the weekend tooling around in the new, seventh-gen BMW 5-Series, I really don’t know if I like it. I need to think about it more. According to BMW, compared to the outgoing model, the new one has improved performance and dynamics, better steering feel, the latest iDrive … BMW says the new design is “mature” and “confidently stylish,” adding the cockpit has been moved back slightly. The new car is 1.2 inches longer, 0.3 inch wider and 0.6 inch taller. The 117.1-inch wheelbase is 0.2 inch longer too. I say unless I park one side by side with an old one I really don’t know if I could tell the difference. Talk about evolutionary. It’s up to the customer whether that’s good or bad I suppose. It’s fast but not quick. In other words, when you tromp the gas pedal from a stop, it ain’t that exciting. In fact, it’s a bit dull. Once up to speed, though, it’s better: good passing power and quick lane changing. The overboosted steering doesn’t make the driving experience any more exciting. You can also get this turbo four in a Mini. Oh, the shame. I need to try the turbo six and twin-turbo V8. I have a feeling the six is the sweet spot… The ride is mostly fine. Not as good as the E-Class, but I blame BMW’s run-flat tire choice. The car is a little crashy over potholes, more so than the E, but generally rides calmly and drama free in comfort or sport. Doesn’t really matter what mode is chosen. The evolutionary look continues inside -- it’s all familiar. Quality is fine. The center screen now sits more on top of the dash than did the old car’s, adding a sense of extra space. I found the seats comfortable and supportive. All good. The 5-Series is the heart of BMW’s lineup. More than 7.6 million have been sold worldwide since 1972 -- since 1975, more than a million in the U.S. alone. There’s a lot riding on this new one. So far, not so good: Sales are down 47 percent so far this year compared to last. Maybe it’s model changeover. OTHER VOICES: Hmm, I found this 530i surprisingly powerful with the 2.0-liter four. I wasn’t expecting turbo-six speed, but for the average driver, I think this is plenty quick. I suppose it could be a little quicker off the line, but like Wes said, passing and expressway speeds are plenty. In sport mode, it’ll rev to six grand without complaint. The four might sound a little whiny through the firewall, but I would never say it struggled. The eight-speed automatic is super smooth, with barely noticeable gear changes. I didn’t really mess with the paddle shifters, but I did notice they were rubber on the back and metal on the front, better to slap them at speed I guess. I too didn’t notice much change in suspension or steering through the different driving modes. It did bang over potholes a few times and yes, the run-flat tires are a big part of that. I drove either an M3 or M4 with normal, not run-flat tires recently, and I found it way, way more livable than our old long-term M3 with the run flats. When anyone asks me about BMW, I say sporty, fun, but don’t get the run flats. The interior is way nicer than the last one I was in. The seats are wider and more comfortable than the last too, with better knee support. And I love how they cradle/bolster you more when you hit the sport button. The iDrive system is easy to use, though it took me a few minutes to find the audio equalizer function; the bass was turned way up, drowning out the treble. Otherwise, my iPhone connected immediately and the rearview camera is great. Oh, and I put the kiddo in the back with the car seat and base, and there was still an acceptable amount of room for front passengers. This 5-Series has 23 grand in options, or as young Wes would say, “that’s the price of a Honda Civic!” I could easily ditch the Bowers and Wilkins radio upgrade and maybe the premium package or two, but I’d still be looking at $65,000 or so. And that is a little tough to swallow with a four cylinder. For reference, the cheapest one you can get with that stellar I6 is $58,000 or so, including destination charges.
  3. KARACHI: Pakistan’s Mohammad Waseem has won International Challenge Fight against Eliecer Valdez, a boxer from Panama, in Panama on Thursday. Pakistan’s only pro boxer and two-time WBC silver flyweight champion has been in Panama since June 29. The fight was held at Fantastic Casino in David at 6am PST and was telecast live on local television TV Max. Waseem knocked out Eliecer Valdez in the just second round. It is Mohammad Waseem sixth consecutive triumph in the boxing world. Waseem told ‘The News’ on Wednesday that it would be the beginning of his preparation for the fight of his life. “It will be the beginning of my preparation for my fight for the world title. I will also play a tune-up fight on July 29 here,” Waseem said. Las Vegas-based Jeff Mayweather is coaching Waseem. Jeff is the uncle of Mayweather Junior, the world’s best fighter. Waseem, who won his flyweight silver world titles in July and November last year, is expected to face the world champion early next year. Waseem was declared No1 by the WBC in its June rankings. In September, it is expected that the flyweight world champion Daigo Higa of Japan will meet Welsh boxer Andrew Selby in the world title fight. Selby defeated Christofer Rosales of Nicaragua in world title eliminator in May in Cardiff.

  6. A year after it was first teased at E3 2016, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus has been confirmed as being very much A Thing. Not only that, but it's A Very Big, Clever, And Exciting Thing at that. How do we know? We've pored over the reveal trailer many times over, we've analysed every detail, and - most importantly of all - we've played it. We'll be updating this article with each and every important bit of new information you need between now and the game's release date on October 27, 2017, but for now, here's everything we currently have. Brace yourself. What we currently have looks really, really good. Yep, in a manner akin to its Fallout 4 announcement, Bethesda has revealed Wolfenstein 2 with a very short turn-around time. The game will be released on October 27, 2017, on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. Say what you like about the number of new games at Bethesda’s E3 press conference this year, but the fact that they’re all out this year makes for a very welcome change to the usual post-show trickle out. The only slight concern is that it'll release on the same day as Assassin's Creed Origins AND Super Mario Odyssey - two of the biggest games of the year. An eight-minute epic, starting with a (highly authentic) mock-up of a Nazi-influenced, live-action Lassie episode, and ending with an American resistance fighter dropping acid and talking to a small, psychedelic, 2D cartoon chameleon, the Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus trailer covers the entire gamut of emotion, from outright hilarity to deeply affecting, downbeat human drama. And Nazi-killing. Nazi-killing is an emotion. A perfect representation of MachineGames' new alt-history Wolfenstein universe, then? Pretty much. But this time, things are scaling up all over. The battle against Nazi occupation has moved to early ‘60s America. The German war machine has taken over every aspect of American life, from TV, to education, to casual, broad-daylight chats with fully-robed KKK members in the streets. Hero BJ Blazkowicz is down, but not out, recovering from his injury at the end of the first game on a hidden rebel submarine, before being accosted by a vast Nazi search force. He’s crippled, and he’s staggeringly outnumbered, but boy is he going to make it to the mainland and build a resistance anyway. And he’s starting in New Orleans. Looks like Mafia 3 might not be the only current-gen game to explore race relations via the lens of the 1960s South, then. Maybe expect a bit less sober, historical commentary this time, though. Although that said, Wolfenstein 2 still packs a ton of heavy, emotional drama into the carnage, just as the first game did. Speaking of which… We played an early level at E3 2017, and that early level is good. Depicting BJ’s escape from the Nazi-inundated sub, it’s a tight, pacey run through the boat’s warren-like corridors and rooms, where architecture stealth, and cunning tactical smarts combine beautifully with the noble art of Blowing Up Bad-Guys Real Messy Like. Actually, it’s not a run at all, as the newly-revived BJ can’t even walk at this point. Instead, he has to negotiate the entire level on wheels, his movement style slightly tweaked to downgrade strafing in exchange for nippy acceleration and a smaller visible profile. Also, new melee attacks. You are going to shoot a lot of Nazis in the gut before smashing their faces in on your wheels. This we can guarantee. There are new spins elsewhere, too. You’ll have to negotiate and rewire machinery, conveyor belts, and shifting platforms in order to make the sub wheelchair-accessible. You’ll have microwave field emitters to play with strategically, in order to lure out and take down patrolling soldiers in the explodiest game of cat-and-mouse you ever did see. And there’s plenty more besides. You can read the full run-down in our hands-on from the show. But if this level of creative wit is Wolfenstein 2’s starting point, then the later-game potential is unfathomable. Clearly Blazko is up for taking not one iota more shit from Nazis than usual (ie. his agreed shit-taking quota will be ‘zero shit’), but things are moving on for him. He and Anya now have twins on the way, making for a really, really good reason to kick every last Nazi out of the US (as well as providing the stimulus for the E3 demo’s most affecting scene). But his perambulation issue isn’t dealt with by the end of the demo either, and that raises some questions. The power-armour we see him using throughout the trailer. Is that going to be a fixture throughout the game? Is that going to be how he regains the ability to walk? And if so, what other powers will it give him? Or is there a more extreme solution? Notice that shot later on, when BJ seems to have some kind of metal strap around his neck? Compare that to the trailer’s opening, in-game shot, which features a surgically spliced monkey-cat. That monkey-cat has its divergent head and body offerings bridged by a very similar strap indeed. Are we looking at recovery-by-head-transplant? We might just well be. Advertisement Beyond the potential of a whole new below-neck physicality, we've also seen that BJ will be able to custom dual-wield this time around - so he'll be able to use, say a shotgun and an assault rifle at the same time, rather than just two of one type - and ride the mechanical Panzerhund robo-dogs. Let's face it, Blazko could rip the Reich in half with his bear hands, so this is going to be positively leisurely*... The guys at MachineGames take their world-building seriously, and that extends to the Collector's Edition of the game. You can grab a copy of the game along with this Terror Billy action figure (Terror Billy is the name Nazi propaganda agents give BJ in the world) for around $99. Sure, it's maybe not something you'd put on the mantlepiece, but it's a cool piece of games merch nonetheless. Terror Billy actually comes with a variety of guns which you can pose him with, and a bomber jacket if you want to change his look. And yes, one of those weapons is a hatchet.
  7. OSLO: Dozens of mountain bikers in a race in Norway have fallen sick most likely due to spray from sheep droppings on their path, Norwegian media reported Wednesday. Of the 300 cyclists who took part in the Transosterdalen race at the end of June in southeastern Norway, at least 50 were struck with fever, stomach pain and diarrhoea in the days following the competition, according to public broadcaster NRK. "This is most likely a Campylobacter infection," race doctor Tor Halvor Bjornstad-Tuveng told NRK, referring to a bacteria which is present in the intestines of many animals. He said material from the sheep droppings, which have decomposed during heavy rain and projected on the bikers´ route, must have sprayed onto their bottles, faces and hands as they rode by. "In particular, if the faeces are fresh and in large quantities," Bjornstad-Tuveng said, "they can splatter on their bottles in such a way that they ingest it when they drink".
  8. Four-door coupes have always been tough to pull off -- look no further than the first-generation Porsche Panamera -- but Audi has achieved nothing less than a hit with the design of the similarly-styled A7. Fans of the four rings who have always liked the power of the S7 but wished it were just a little bit smaller on the outside are in luck this year: Audi is finally bringing the S5 Sportback to the States, after this four-door coupe was offered for a full generation back in Europe. The A5/S5 Sportback duo has just been completely redesigned inside and out, and is ready to tempt Audi buyers looking at vehicles as diverse as the S4 to the S7 with a sleek and well-balanced design, a versatile interior and plenty of power underhood. The S5 Sportback is one of those cars that looks fast standing still, though a 3.0-liter V6 helped by a twin-scroll turbocharger and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels is what gets the work done. Churning out 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, this engine has already starred elsewhere in the Audi lineup, and in the S5 Sportback it's good for sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. These are figures that were reserved for supercars not that long ago, and Audi has made it happen in a svelte four-door coupe aimed at buyers looking for a plenty of go with their cavernous interior: With the back seats folded down the S5 offers 35 cubic feet of cargo room that shrinks a bit to 21.8 cubic feet with the rear seats up, while the hatch opening stretches all the way up to the top of the rear glass, well up the roof. You've probably seen BMW's version of the same concept -- the 4-Series Gran Coupe).
  9. SEOUL: Samsung Electronics said Sunday it would start selling a refurbished version of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone this week after an embarrassing recall over exploding batteries rocked the tech giant last year. The recall of millions of Galaxy Note 7 devices cost the world´s largest smartphone maker billions of dollars in lost profits and hammered its global reputation. The refurbished device, made of recalled, unsealed Note 7 handsets and unused components are outfitted with new batteries, Samsung said in a statement. The limited-edition phone -- the Galaxy Note Fan Edition (FE) -- will hit shelves in South Korea on July 7, Samsung said, adding it would only sell 400,000 units at home. The firm said it would decide later whether to release the refurbished edition elsewhere, which is priced at 699,000 won ($611) domestically, far lower than the previous version that was nearly $1,000. About three million Galaxy Note 7 handsets were returned to the firm last year, but campaign groups including Greenpeace have expressed concern that discarding the phones could harm the environment. "The latest launch of the Galaxy Note FE... has a significant meaning as an environment-friendly project that minimised the waste of resources," Samsung said in a statement. The recall -- the largest-ever by the South Korean tech giant -- was deeply embarrassing for Samsung, but it has just launched a new flagship device, the Galaxy S8, to positive reviews and strong orders. In April Samsung posted its biggest quarterly net profit in more than three years, although the company has come under pressure on wider fronts. Lee Jae-Yong, the Samsung group´s vice-chairman and heir to its leadership, is on trial for bribery over his role in a massive corruption scandal that brought down impeached former president Park Geun-Hye. Lee is accused of bribing Park and her confidante Choi Soon-Sil with millions of dollars to seek regulatory favours.
  10. MULTAN: At least six people were killed and 24 injured when a passenger van caught fire near Head Muhammadwala here on Sunday. The passenger van was coming from Chowk Munda, Layyah towards Multan when it caught fire due to an LPG cylinder blast at Head Muhammadwala bridge, according to rescue sources. After receiving information, district administration officials and the area people reached the site for rescue activities. The rescue sources said that the wounded were shifted to Nishtar Hospital where doctors said some of the injured were in critical condition.
  11. LAHORE: Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique on Sunday claimed that Nawaz Sharif is being punished for making Pakistan stronger because certain elements don't like our faces. The minister was addressing his party’s Eid Milan gathering in Lahore, a day after a hard-hitting speech. Whenever PML-N pulled Pakistan out of crisis we are made to pay the price, he said. He claimed that the country today has a strong, free media and a free judiciary, and its institutions work in accordance with the Constitution. "This was not achieved in a day," he added. "We will not let this progress be reversed," the minister maintained. Saad Rafique further said ‘No proof of money laundering was presented against Sharif Family in months long investigations and we are appearing before the JIT despite reservations.’
