  1. Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar will step down as party leader immediately and will resign as taoiseach as soon as his Fine Gael successor is selected. Announcing his resignation, Mr Varadkar described leading his country as "the most fulfilling time of my life". He was Ireland's youngest PM in 2017 when he became Fine Gael leader. He currently leads the coalition government in Dublin, along with Fianna Fáil and the Green Party. Speaking from the steps of government buildings in Dublin on Wednesday, Mr Varadkar said he had "led Ireland from unemployment to full employment, from budget deficit to budget surplus, from austerity to prosperity". Mr Varadkar added that he was "proud that we have made the country a more equal and more modern place when it comes to the rights of children, the LGBT community, equality for women and their bodily autonomy". During his time as taoiseach, Mr Varadkar championed referendums to change the Irish constitution legalising same-sex marriage and abortion. Mr Varadkar also listed work to improve the affordability of childcare among his achievements as well as increasing government spending on arts and culture, international development, and public infrastructure. He said that he felt the current government "could be re-elected" but he felt he was "not the best person for the job anymore". In the election of 2020, Mr Varadkar led his party to a third-place finish in terms of number of seats in Dáil Éireann, the lower house in the country's parliament. As part of the coalition deal struck between the parties it was agreed that Mr Varadkar and Micheál Martin would each hold the position of taoiseach for two years. In 2020, Mr Martin was appointed taoiseach with Mr Varadkar serving as his tánaiste (deputy PM), before the two swapped roles in 2022. Speaking after Mr Varadkar's resignation announcement, Mr Martin said he had been "surprised" by the decision. "I want to take the opportunity to thank him sincerely, we got on very well," Mr Martin added. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68616372
  2. Wales suffered the embarrassment of a first Six Nations Wooden Spoon since 2003 after Italy posted a 24-21 victory in Cardiff, with head coach Warren Gatland saying it felt as though Welsh rugby had hit rock bottom. Wales finished bottom of the table as they suffered five defeats in one Six Nations tournament for the first time in 21 years. The sight of modern-day legend George North being carried off injured in his final international appearance and forlorn young captain Dafydd Jenkins bravely fronting up in a television interview were enduring images. Short-term pain for long-term gain. That is how the reset of Welsh rugby has been billed. The first part is definitely apt. Whether the second part will follow remains questionable. While Gatland has pleaded for patience as he continues an extensive post-World Cup rebuilding job, stark statistics cannot be avoided. Wales have lost 12 of the past 13 Six Nations matches. The most concerning thing is a run of seven successive Six Nations home defeats, with two on the bounce to Italy. Opposition sides used to fear coming into the Cardiff cauldron. Now they arrive at the Principality Stadium expecting to win. More often than not, they do. The ground has played host to some memorable Welsh rugby moments, with Six Nations title triumphs and Grand Slam glory topping that list. Recently though, the Cardiff venue has seemingly lost its aura. There have been 14 losses and one draw in the past 21 capped internationals at home, with victories against only Canada, Fiji, Australia, Scotland, Argentina and England in full internationals during that sequence. The atmosphere remains among world rugby's finest, but opponents are no longer fazed by what awaits them. The supporters will keep coming, for now. Watching a small minority of fans leave after half-time and a half-hearted second-half Mexican Wave going around the ground while Italy were winning 18-0 were among the most depressing sights of a sorry campaign. The Cardiff mood was in stark contrast to five years ago when Wales stormed to the Six Nations title and a Grand Slam by crushing Ireland. That 2019 success seems a lifetime ago. Has Gatland lost his touch? Gatland revealed following the Italy defeat he had offered his resignation to Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chief executive Abi Tierney after the final whistle. He says that offer was turned down. Gatland consistently says international rugby is about results. If his predecessor Wayne Pivac had overseen anything like the dismal display against Italy, he would have been castigated. Gatland is contracted until the 2027 World Cup, having returned for a second spell as Wales head coach in December 2022. When he accepted the advances from the WRU to replace Pivac, Gatland knew there was always a danger that he might damage the memory of his first stint in charge. The challenge for the 60-year-old will be to prove he has the hunger and interest for the rebuild. Wales have enjoyed plenty of glory days over the past two decades, many of them under Gatland. The Kiwi was in charge from 2007 to 2019, when Wales won four Six Nations titles, three Grand Slams and reached two World Cup semi-finals. Since he returned, Gatland has won only one of 10 Six Nations matches, against Italy in Rome last year. His overall record during his second spell is six wins in 18 games, with four of those victories coming in the World Cup last year, where Gatland steered Wales into the quarter-finals before losing to Argentina. That performance demonstrated he could improve a side after having preparation time. The worrying element of this Six Nations campaign was the lack of development, from the team that gave Scotland a 27-point start in the opening game to the team that delivered one of the poorest performances in living memory against the Italians. Golden generation has gone A raft of senior players have retired in this past year and this new generation has predictably come up well short at Test level. Gatland has lost a lot of experience with the retirements of Alun Wyn Jones, Justin Tipuric, Rhys Webb, Dan Biggar, Josh Navidi, Leigh Halfpenny and now North. Liam Williams, Gareth Anscombe, Tomas Francis, Taulupe Faletau, Jac Morgan, Taine Plumtree, Christ Tshiunza and Dewi Lake have been unavailable for this campaign because of injury or club commitments. Most coaches would find these departures challenging. In certain positions, Gatland's policy has been to blood young players like Mackenzie Martin, Alex Mann, Cameron Winnett and Evan Lloyd with the 2027 World Cup in mind rather than selecting more established players. Gatland will likely look at his own performance with regards to tactics and gameplan, and whether he should have used players like Mason Grady and Will Rowlands more. Those two made only one start between them. His backroom staff will also be reviewed, with the attack game under Alex King generally falling short during the tournament, while the set-piece - which is on Jonathan Humphreys' watch - remains a concern. Life is not about to get any easier for Gatland or his players. Their next game is against world champions South Africa in June, followed by a two-Test tour of Australia. All this is taking place while the Welsh rugby system is broken and needs fixing. The spotlight deserves to be more on the powerbrokers who have overseen the recent demise of the Welsh game at so many levels. Wales players and supporters have been let down. The under-20s lose more games than they win, while regional rugby is struggling with the four sides languishing in the bottom half of the United Rugby Championship. Ospreys are the only Welsh professional side to beat a non-Welsh team in 2024. The last time Wales received the Wooden Spoon there was transformational change, with the club system replaced by five regional professional teams, which was eventually reduced to four with the demise of the Celtic Warriors. Whether a further cull to three, or even two, is required to streamline the talent within Wales will be debated. That possibility is fraught with danger over identity as fans would be asked to support new teams. If four teams are maintained, they must somehow be funded properly, a challenge in the modern-day financial world. The 25-cap law will also be reviewed. The policy only allows players who have 25 caps or more to go and play for clubs outside of Wales while remaining eligible for the national team - although there are caveats, too many some would argue. Players have recently been queuing up to say the policy should be scrapped but its defenders claim it keeps young stars in Wales and gives the national side maximum preparation time. Food for thought for Tierney and chair Richard Collier-Keywood, who so far have offered only generic words about the future of Welsh rugby. What we need to see now is action from the pair and executive director of rugby Nigel Walker. Difficult decisions have to be made. Tierney came into her new role in January, backed by a new-look WRU board, and promised an overall strategy would be announced by June. The fact there is not a current plan sums up the sorry mess Welsh rugby finds itself in on and off the pitch. This pain Welsh rugby is experiencing now will only be worth it if it leads to that long-term gain. https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/68585200
  3. A farmer said he had seen "nothing like it before" when one of his ewes gave birth to a lamb weighing 16kg (35lb). Meilir Jones, from Powys, helped with the birth on his farm in Llangadfan, near Oswestry, on Sunday. The animal is over three times the size of a regular lamb. Guinness World Records said it did not record the weight of lambs and so could not confirm whether the animal had broken any records. Mr Jones said he noticed the ewe starting to lamb and realised it needed some help. “I just put my hand in the sheep and started to feel this lamb and thought ‘this is a bit of a mess’," he told Radio Cymru's Agricultural Bulletin. “I started pulling and pulling and pulling, and it came out like a big lump. “I weighed him and the clock said 16kg… massive.” A regular-sized lamb is about 5kg (11lb). 'Record for me' Mr Jones said he had heard of an 11kg (24lb) lamb being born in Wales a few years ago, but had never seen anything like this. He added that he was shocked that the sheep “was hiding this big lamb inside”. “I’ve had big lambs before, but nothing like this little guy," he said. “It’s a record for me.” He said he was also grateful that nothing went wrong. “The sheep and the lamb are alive and that’s the most important thing,” he said. Mr Jones said he and his family were thinking of a name for the animal. “I have a few names popping up in my head, something that will match the lamb’s personality. I think something like Rocky maybe?” https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp9e13j1n1lo

  5. This is the new Peugeot E-5008 – a seven-seat SUV that Peugeot says is “the only model in its segment to offer 100 per cent electric mobility for seven passengers with a choice of powertrains”. We think they might have forgotten about the similarly priced, seven-seat Mercedes EQB and GLB, but we’ll let them off because they’re excited about their new car. Unsurprisingly, it’s quite a good-looking thing. Up front you get Peugeot’s three light claws either side of the new grille, and there are LED lights as standard with fancy Pixel LEDs on the top spec GT trim. It’s chunky and slab-sided from the rear, and the wheel designs are typically excellent. All of the old 5008’s chrome has gone too, replaced with Meteor Grey contrast paint higher up and Orbital Black on the lower plastic bits. You can have six different exterior colours too, although two of those are different shades of grey and two more are black and white. Boring. Still, what’s underneath the E-5008 is fairly interesting. It’s based on the Stellantis STLA-M platform and is offered with three different electric powertrains. The 210 Single Motor is the entry point to the range, with a 73kWh battery offering 311 miles of range. The 230 Long Range Single Motor is next and looks like it could be the pick of the bunch, with a giant 98kWh battery offering up to 410 miles of range (pending WLTP approval). At the top of the tree is the 320 Dual Motor AWD which, as you might have guessed, gets two electric motors and the smaller battery option for presumably around 300 miles of range. Oh, and the numbers in the names display the power output in PS, so you’re looking at 207bhp, 227bhp and 316bhp respectively. A heat pump is optional to improve efficiency, but all E-5008s will rapid charge at speeds of up to 160kW. Plus, even though it has been designed as an EV first, if you want petrol power there will be a 48-volt mild-hybrid at launch with 134bhp or a more powerful plug-in hybrid in 2025. Inside you get seating for up to seven people, with the front row getting optional AGR-approved seats (that’s the German campaign for healthier backs) and the middle row able to slide and recline. There’s a big panoramic glass roof too, plus 259 litres of boot space when you’ve got seven seats in place, 748 litres when you fold the rearmost row and 1,815 litres when only the front seats remain standing. We’re sure that giant 21in ‘Panoramic i-Cockpit’ display won’t have escaped your attention either. That’s the same as you get in the new E-3008 and includes built-in Chat GPT (eugh) and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. Peugeot says orders for the new 5008 will open in Autumn this year and that cars will be covered by a new 8-year/100,000 warranty. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/new-peugeot-e-5008-all-electric-seven-seater-410-miles-range
  6. The US secretary of state has flown to the Middle East to discuss a post-war plan to govern and secure Gaza. Antony Blinken's talks with Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia and then Egypt will focus on what the US calls "an architecture for lasting peace". It comes as witnesses said Israeli forces had escalated their operation around al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, carrying out a number of air strikes. Earlier, Israel's military said it had killed 90 gunmen there since Monday. Separately, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas are continuing in Qatar to bring about a ceasefire and the release of hostages. But there are few signs that a breakthrough is imminent. Mr Blinken's sixth trip to the region since the start of the war in Gaza saw him land in Jeddah on Wednesday afternoon to meet the Saudi leadership. Descending from the plane shortly before sundown he was greeted by waiting officials, including Mazin al-Himali from the Saudi foreign ministry, who embraced Mr Blinken. He is expected to meet the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, at the royal palace on Wednesday night. State department spokesman Matthew Miller said they would discuss efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and increase aid deliveries to Gaza, amid further dire warnings about the scale of the humanitarian crisis there. A UN-backed food security assessment this week said 1.1 million people in Gaza were struggling with catastrophic hunger and starvation, adding that a man-made famine in the north was imminent between now and May. Also on the agenda would be "co-ordination on post-conflict planning for Gaza, including ensuring Hamas can no longer govern or repeat the attacks of 7 October, a political path for the Palestinian people with security assurances with Israel, and an architecture for lasting peace and security in the region", Mr Miller added. Mr Blinken will travel to Cairo on Thursday to meet Egyptian leaders. The Americans are trying to bring together a major deal that would put the internationally-recognised Palestinian Authority (PA) back into Gaza for the first time since it was driven out by Hamas 17 years ago. Nothing has yet been drawn up, but the ideas are thought to include possible support on the ground from Arab nations, while all the parties including Israel would commit to pursuing a two-state solution - the long-held international formula for peace. The major Arab sponsor Saudi Arabia would normalise relations with Israel in return for access to advanced US weapons and an American-backed civilian nuclear power programme. However, even if such a multi-part plan could be agreed, US officials concede it is likely only attainable in the longer term. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the idea of PA control of Gaza. The issue is likely to be another sticking point amid an already fractious relationship with President Biden. Some of those familiar with the plan concede it feels ambitious given the lack of breakthrough on a ceasefire agreement, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and because any remaining trust between Israelis and Palestinians is shattered. But the US administration hopes it can still use the moment to grasp the initiative. Mr Blinken will also travel to Israel on Friday as part of his current trip. According to Mr Miller, he will discuss with Israeli leaders the hostage negotiations and the "need to ensure the defeat of Hamas, including in Rafah, in a way that protects the civilian po[CENSORED]tion". President Joe Biden has warned Israel that it would be a "mistake" to launch an offensive in the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million displaced civilians are sheltering. But on Tuesday, Mr Netanyahu said Israel was "determined to complete the elimination of [the Hamas] battalions in Rafah, and there is no way to do this without a ground incursion". More than 31,900 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68614549. The conflict began when about 1,200 people were killed and 253 others were taken hostage in Hamas's attacks on southern Israel on 7 October, according to Israeli tallies.
